Plant-derived anticancer agents: A green anticancer approach显示文摘Cancer is a frightful disease and represents one of the biggest health-care issues for the human race and demands a proactive strategy for cure. Plants are reservoirs for novel chemical entities and provide a promising line for research on cancer. Hitherto, being effective, chemotherapy is accompanied by certain unbearable side effects. Nevertheless, plants and plant derived products is a revolutionizing field as these are Simple, safer, ecofriendly, low-cost, fast, and less toxic as compared with conventional treatment methods.Phytochemicals are selective in their functions and acts specifically on tumor cells without affecting normal cells. Carcinogenesis is complex phenomena that involves many signaling cascades. Phytochemicals are considered suitable candidates for anticancer drug development due to their pleiotropic actions on target events with multiple manners. The research is in progress for developing potential candidates(those can block or slow down the growth of cancer cells without any side effects) from these phytochemicals. Many phytochemicals and their derived analogs have been identified as potential candidates for anticancer therapy. Effort has been made through this comprehensive review to highlight the recent developments and milestones achieved in cancer therapies using phytomolecules with their mechanism of action on nuclear and cellular factors. Furthermore, drugs for cancer treatment and their limitations have also been discussed. | Javed Iqbal Banzeer Ahsan Abbasi Tariq Mahmood Sobia Kanwal Barkat Ali Sayed Afzal Shah Ali Talha Khalil | 2017 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2017,7,12: | 8

Life cycle and pathogenesis of hepatitis D virus:A review显示文摘Hepatitis D virus(HDV) is a defective RNA virus which requires the help of hepatitis B virus(HBV) virus for its replication and assembly of new virions. HDV genome contains only one actively transcribed open reading frame which encodes for two isoforms of hepatitis delta antigen. Post-translational modifications of small and large delta antigens(S-HDAg and L-HDAg) involving phosphorylation and isoprenylation respectively con- fer these antigens their specific properties. S-HDAg is required for the initiation of the viral genome replica- tion, whereas L-HDAg serves as a principal inhibitor of replication and is essential for the assembly of new virion particles. Immune mediation has usually been implicated in HDV-associated liver damage. The patho- genesis of HDV mainly involves interferon-α signaling inhibition, HDV-specific T-lymphocyte activation and cytokine responses, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha and nuclear factor kappa B signaling. Due to limited protein coding capacity, HDV makes use of host cel- lular proteins to accomplish their life cycle processes, including transcription, replication, post-transcriptional and translational modifications. This intimate host- pathogen interaction significantly alters cell proteome and is associated with an augmented expression of pro-inflammatory, growth and anti-apoptotic factorswhich explains severe necroinflammation and increased cell survival and an early progression to hepatocellular carcinoma in HDV patients. The understanding of the process of viral replication, HBV-HDV interactions, and etio-pathogenesis of the severe course of HDV infection is helpful in identifying the potential therapeutic targets in the virus life cycle for the prophylaxis and treatment of HDV infection and complications. | Zaigham Abbas Rafia Afzal | 2013 | World Journal of Hepatology2013,5,12: | 6
Influence of Seed Priming on Performance and Water Productivity of Direct Seeded Rice in Alternating Wetting and Drying显示文摘Direct seeded rice is promising alternative to traditional transplanting, but requires appropriate crop and water management to maintain yield performance and achieve high water productivity. Present study evaluated the effect of seed priming and irrigation on crop establishment, tillering, agronomic traits, paddy yield, grain quality and water productivity of direct seeded rice in alternate wetting and drying(DSR-AWD) in comparison with direct seeded rice at field capacity(DSRFC). Seed priming treatments were osmo-priming with KCl(2.2%), Ca Cl2(2.2%) and moringa leaf extracts(MLE, 3.3%) including hydro-priming as control. Among the treatments, seed osmo-primed with MLE emerged earlier and had higher final emergence, followed by osmo-priming with Ca Cl2. Tillering emergence rate and number of tillers per plant were the highest for seed priming with Ca Cl2 in DSRAWD. Total productive and non-productive tillers, panicle length, biological and grain yields, harvest index were highest for seed priming with MLE or Ca Cl2 in DSR-AWD. Similarly, grain quality, estimated in terms of normal grains, abortive and chalky grains, was also the highest in DSR-AWD with MLE osmo-priming. Benefit cost ratio and water productivity was also the highest in DSR-AWD for seed priming with MLE. In conclusion, seed priming with MLE or Ca Cl2 can be successfully employed to improve the direct seeded rice performance when practiced with alternate wetting and drying irrigation. | Hafeez Ur REHMAN Muhammad KAMRAN Shahzad Maqsood Ahmed BASRA Irfan AFZAL Muhammad FAROOQ | 2015 | Rice science2015,22,4: | 5
Enhanced removal of nitrate and phosphate from wastewater by Chlorella vulgaris: Multi-objective optimization and CFD simulation显示文摘To enhance the efficiency of wastewater biotreatment with microalgae, the effects of physical parameters need to be investigated and optimized. In this regard, the individual and interactive effects of temperature, p H and aeration rate on the performance of biological removal of nitrate and phosphate by Chlorella vulgaris were studied by response surface methodology(RSM). Furthermore, a multi-objective optimization technique was applied to the response equations to simultaneously find optimal combinations of input parameters capable of removing the highest possible amount of nitrate and phosphate. The optimal calculated values were temperature of 26.3 °C, pH of 8 and aeration rate of 4.7 L·min^(-1). Interestingly, under the optimum condition, approximately 85% of total nitrate and 77% of whole phosphate were removed after 48 h and 24 h, respectively, which were in excellent agreement with the predicted values. Finally, the effect of baffle on mixing performance and, as a result, on bioremoval efficiency was investigated in Stirred Tank Photobioreactor(STP) by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). Flow behavior indicated substantial enhancement in mixing performance when the baffle was inserted into the tank. Obtained simulation results were validated experimentally. Under the optimum condition, due to proper mixing in baffled STP, nitrate and phosphate removal increased up to 93% and 86%,respectively, compared to unbaffled one. | Mohammad Bagher Sabeti Mohammad Amin Hejazi Afzal Karimi | 2019 | Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2019,27,3: | 4

Electronic-property dependent interactions between tetracycline and graphene nanomaterials in aqueous solution显示文摘Understanding the interactions between graphene nanomaterials(GNMs) and antibiotics in aqueous solution is critical to both the engineering applications of GNMs and the assessment of their potential impact on the fate and transport of antibiotics in the aquatic environment. In this study, adsorption of one common antibiotic, tetracycline, by graphene oxide(GO) and reduced graphene oxide(RGO) was examined with multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) and graphite as comparison. The results showed that the tetracycline adsorption capacity by the four selected carbonaceous materials on the unit mass basis followed an order of GO > RGO > MWCNTs > graphite. Upon normalization by surface area, graphite, RGO and MWCNTs had almost the same high tetracycline adsorption affinity while GO exhibited the lowest. We proposed π-electron-property dependent interaction mechanisms to explain the observed different adsorption behaviors. Density functional theory(DFT) calculations suggested that the oxygen-containing functional groups on GO surface reduced its π-electron-donating ability, and thus decreased the π-based interactions between tetracycline and GO surface. Comparison of adsorption efficiency at different p H indicated that electrostatic interaction also played an important role in tetracycline-GO interactions. Site energy analysis confirmed a highly heterogeneous distribution of the binding sites and strong tetracycline binding affinity of GO surface. | Lin He Fei-fei Liu Mengyao Zhao Zhen Qi Xuefei Sun Muhammad Zaheer Afzal Xiaomin Sun Yanhui Li Jingcheng Hao Shuguang Wang | 2018 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2018,30,4: | 4
Computational fluid dynamics modeling of abutment scour under steady current using the level set method显示文摘The scour and deposition pattern around an abutment under constant discharge condition is calculated using a three dimensional(3D) Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) model. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes(RANS) equations are solved in three dimensions using a CFD model. The Level Set Method(LSM) is used for calculation of both free surface and bed topography. The two-equation turbulence model(k-ε and k-ω) is used to calculate the eddy viscosity in the RANS equations. The pressure term in the RANS equations on a staggered grid is modeled using the Chorin’s projection method. The 5th order Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory(WENO) scheme discretizes the convective term of the RANS equations. The Kovacs and Parker and Dey formulations are used for the reduction in bed shear stress on the sloping bed.The model also used the sandslide algorithm which limits bed shear stress reduction during the erosion process. The numerical model solution is validated against experimental results collected at the Politecnico di Milano,Milan,Italy.Furthe r,the numerical model is tested for perfo rmance by varying the grid sizes and key parameters like the space and time discretization schemes. The effect of varying bed porosity has been evaluated.Overall, the free surface is well represented in a realistic manner and bed topography is well predicted using the Level Set Method(LSM). | Mohammad Saud Afzal Hans Bihs Lalit Kumar | 2020 | International Journal of Sediment Research2020,35,4: | 4
Pentoxifylline in hepatopulmonary syndrome显示文摘AIM:To determine the effects of pentoxifylline(PTX) on clinical manifestations and evaluate arterial blood gas data in hepatopulmonary syndrome(HPS) in children.METHODS:In a pilot study of 10 children with chronic liver disease, who had HPS,20 mg/kg/d PTX was administered for 3 mo.Clinical data and arterial blood gas parameters were evaluated at baseline, the end of the treatment period, and 3 mo after drug discontinuation.RESULTS:Six patients could tolerate PTX,while four patients experienced complications.Among patients who could tolerate PTX,there was a significant increase in arterial oxygen pressure(PaO 2)(P = 0.02) and oxygen saturation(SaO 2)(P = 0.04) and alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient(P = 0.02) after 3 mo of treatment.Significant decreases in PaO 2(P = 0.02) and alveolararterial oxygen gradient(P = 0.02) were also seen after drug discontinuation.CONCLUSION:PTX may improve PaO 2,SaO 2 and alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient in the early stage of HPS. | Hamid Reza Kianifar Maryam Khalesi Eftekhar Mahmoodi Monavar Afzal Aghaei | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,35: | 4
Qualitatively and quantitatively assessing the aggregation ability of sludge during aerobic granulation process combined XDLVO theory with physicochemical properties显示文摘Inexact mechanism of aerobic granulation still impedes optimization and application of aerobic granules. In this study, the extended Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey, and Overbeek(XDLVO) theory and physicochemical properties were combined to assess the aggregation ability of sludge during aerobic granulation process qualitatively and quantitatively. Results show that relative hydrophobicity of sludge and polysaccharide content of extracellular polymeric substances(EPS) increased, while electronegativity of sludge decreased during acclimation phase. After 20 days' acclimation, small granules began to form due to high aggregation ability of sludge. Since then, coexisted flocs and granules possessed distinct physicochemical properties during granulation and maturation phase. The relative hydrophobicity decreased while electronegativity increased for flocs, whereas that for granules presented reverse trend. Through analyzing the interaction energy using the XDLVO theory, small granules tended to self-grow rather than self-aggregate or attach of flocs due to poor aggregation ability between flocs and granules during the granulation phase. Besides, remaining flocs were unlikely to self-aggregate owing to poor aggregation ability, low hydrophobicity and high electronegativity. | Shasha Yuan Mingming Gao Hui Ma Muhammad Zaheer Afzal Yun-Kun Wang Mingyu Wang Hai Xu Shu-Guang Wang Xin-Hua Wang | 2018 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2018,30,5: | 4
β-Ga_(2)O_(3) nanowires and thin films for metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors:Sensing mechanisms and performance enhancement strategies显示文摘The reliable, selective, and fast detection of the inorganic and organic gases in indoor and outdoor air and industrial processes is a huge challenge for environmental sustainability, healthier life, and disease control and diagnosis.Metal oxides have been frequently explored as highly sensitive receptor elements in the electronic gas sensors since the 1960s.Gallium oxide(Ga_(2)O_(3)),often recognized as one of the widest-bandgap semiconductors, has shown tremendous potential as the inorganic gas receptor because of its extraordinary chemical and thermal stability, and excellent electronic properties. This article presents a comprehensive reference on the electrical properties, historical developments, detection mechanisms, and gas sensing performance of Ga_(2)O_(3) nanowires and composite nanostructures. In particular, the relationships between composition, nanostructure, and gas sensing properties of galliumcontaining oxidic nanomaterials such as β-Ga_(2)O_(3) nanowires,surface-modified Ga_(2)O_(3),metal-doped Ga_(2)O_(3) or Ga-doped metal oxides, and Ga_(2)O_(3)/metal oxide composite heterostructures are studied. The applications of Ga_(2)O_(3) gas sensors are discussed with an emphasis on their practical limitations such as high-temperature operation, power consumption, and miniaturization issues. Finally, future research directions and potential developments are suggested. | Adeel Afzal | 2019 | Journal of Materiomics2019,5,4: | 4
采用燃烧技术制备CuO纳米粒子:一种高效且环境友好的用于芳族醛合成芳族腈催化剂(英文)显示文摘CuO nanoparticles were synthesized using an energy-efficient and rapid solution combustion technique with malic acid employed as a fuel. The combustion-derived CuO nanoparticles were used as catalysts in a one-pot synthesis of aromatic nitriles from aromatic aldehydes and hydroxylamine hydrochloride. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis. The catalytic activity of the CuO nanoparticles in the synthesis of aromatic nitriles from aromatic aldehydes was evaluated. The present protocol offers the advantages of a clean reaction, simple methodology, short reaction duration (1-2 min), and high yield (85%-98%). The catalytic activity of the CuO nanoparticles was found to be higher than that of bulk CuO powder under the same conditions. The catalyst can also be recovered and reused up to four times with no significant loss of catalytic activity. The present approach is inexpensive and is a convenient technique suitable for industrial production of CuO nanoparticles and nitriles. | Belladamadu Siddappa ANANDAKUMAR Muthukur Bhojegowd Madhusudana REDDY Chikka Nagaiah THARAMANI Mohamed Afzal PASHA Gujjarahalli Thimmanna CHANDRAPPA | 2013 | 催化学报2013,34,4: | 4
Seed Priming Influence on Early Crop Growth, Phenological Development and Yield Performance of Linola (Linum usitatissimum L.)显示文摘Reduced early crop growth and limited branching are amongst yield limiting factors of linola. Field response of seed priming treatments viz. 50 mmol L-1 salicylic acid(SA), 2.2% CaCl2 and 3.3% moringa leaf extract(MLE) including untreated dry and hydropriming controls was evaluated on early crop growth and yield performance of linola. Osmopriming with CaCl2 reduced emergence time and produced the highest seedling fresh and dry weights including Chl. a contents. Osmopriming with CaCl2reduced crop branching and fl owering and maturity times and had the maximum plant height, number of branches, tillers, pods and seeds per pod followed by MLE. Increase in seed weight, biological and seed yields was 9.30, 34.16 and 39.49%, harvest index(4.12%) and oil contents(13.39%) for CaCl2 osmopriming. Positive relationship between emergence and seedling vigor traits, 100-seed weight, seed yield with maturity time, 100-seed weight and seed yield were found. The study concludes that seed osmopriming with CaCl2 or MLE can play signifi cant role to improve early crop growth and seed yields of linola. | Hafeez ur Rehman Muhammad Qaiser Nawaz Shahzad Maqsood Ahmed Basra Irfan Afzal Azra Yasmeen Fayyaz ul-Hassan | 2014 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2014,13,5: | 4
Role of dietary phytochemicals in modulation of miRNA expression:Natural swords combating breast cancer显示文摘The National Cancer Institute had projected breast cancer(BC) as one of the topmost prevalent malignancies around the globe. In many cases,BC becomes resistant to chemotherapy, radiation and hormonal therapies.Traditional BC therapies are associated with adverse side effects, drug resistance and recurrence.Extensive research work has shown that these dietary phytochemicals(DPs) may exert therapeutic effects by regulating the miRNA expression.A large number of DPs have been researched as miRNA regulatory agents against BC and some other DPs have not yet been tested against BC.We have discussed the effects of curcumin, diallyl disulphide,3,3′ diindolylmethane, ellagic acid,genistein,indole-3-carbinol,quercetin,resveratrol,and sulforaphane on regulation of expression of BC miRNAs in a wide range of in vitro and in vivo models. We have also shown some of the possible DPs(Oleanolic acid, capsaicin, benzyl isothiocyanate, epigallocatechin gallate, phenethyl isothiocyanate and ursolic acid) that have shown miRNA regulatory activities and have not yet been tested against BC miRNAs.Finally, current limitations, challenges, future perspectives of DPs and BC research are also critically discussed. | Banzeer Ahsan Abbasi Javed Iqbal Tariq Mahmood Ali Talha Khalil Barkat Ali Sobia Kanwal Sayed Afzal Shah Riaz Ahmad | 2018 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2018,11,9: | 3
Seed priming improves early seedling vigor, growth and productivity of spring maize显示文摘Potential of seed priming treatments in improving the performance of early planted maize was evaluated against timely planting. Seeds of maize hybrid FH-810 were soaked in water(hydropriming), Ca Cl2(2.2%, osmopriming), moringa leaf extracts(MLE 3.3%, osmopriming) and salicylic acid(SA, 50 mg L–1, hormonal priming) each for 18 h. Untreated and hydroprimed seeds were taken as control. Seeds primed with SA took less time in emergence and had high vigor in early planted maize. Amongst treatments, hormonal priming, reduced the electrical conductivity, increased the leaf relative and chlorophyll contents followed by osmopriming with Ca Cl2 at seedling stage. Likewise, plant height, grain rows and 1 000-grain weight, grain and biological yield and harvest index were also improved by seed priming; however hormonal priming and osmopriming with MLE were more effective in this regard. Improved yield performance by hormonal priming or osmopriming with MLE in early planting primarily owed to increased leaf area index, crop growth and net assimilation rates, and maintenance of green leaf area at maturity. In conclusion, osmopriming with MLE and hormonal priming with SA were the most economical treatments in improving productivity of early planted spring maize through stimulation of early seedling growth at low temperature. | Hafeez ur Rehman Hassan Iqbal Shahzad M A Basra Irfan Afzal Muhammad Farooq Abdul Wakeel WANG Ning | 2015 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2015,14,9: | 3

Mutagenic and cytotoxic potential of Endosulfan and Lambda-cyhalothrin—In vitro study describing individual and combined effects of pesticides显示文摘Excessive use of pesticides poses increased risks to non target species including humans. In the developing countries, lack of proper awareness about the toxic potential of pesticides makes the farmer more vulnerable to pesticide linked toxicities, which could lead to diverse pathological conditions. The toxic potential of a pesticide could be determined by their ability to induce genetic mutations and cytotoxicity. Hence, determination of genetic mutation and cytotoxicity of each pesticide is unavoidable to legislate health and safety appraisal about pesticides. The objective of current investigation was to determine the genotoxic and cytotoxic potential of Endosulfan(EN) and Lambda-cyhalothrin(LC); individually and in combination. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-Diphenyltetrazolium Bromide(MTT) assay was utilized to determine cytotoxicity, while two mutant histidine dependent Salmonella strains(TA98, TA100) were used to determine the mutagenicity of EN and LC.Moreover, mutagenicity assay was conducted with and without S9 to evaluate the effects of metabolic activation on mutagenicity. Even though a dose dependent increase in the number of revertant colonies was detected with EN against both bacterial strains, a highly significant(p < 0.05) increase in the mutagenicity was detected in TA98 with S9. In comparison, data obtained from LC revealed less mutagenic potential than EN. Surprisingly, the non-mutagenic individual-concentrations of EN and LC showed dose dependent mutagenicity when combined. Combination of EN and LC synergistically induced mutagenicity both in TA98 and TA100. MTT assay spotlighted comparable dose dependent cytotoxicity effects of both pesticides. Interestingly, the combination of EN and LC produced increased reversion and cytotoxicity at lower doses as compared to each pesticide, concluding that pesticide exposure even at sub-lethal doses can produce cytotoxicity and genetic mutations, which could lead to carcinogenicity. | Umber Saleem Sohail Ejaz Muhammad Ashraf Muhammad Ovais Omer Imran Iltaf Zainab Batool Riffat Fatima Msbah Afzal | 2014 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2014,26,7: | 3
