1Supplementation with sodium butyrate improves growth and antioxidant function in dairy calves before weaning显示文摘Background: There is increasing research interest in using short-chain fatty acids(SCFAs) including butyrate as potential alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters in animal production. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of supplementation of sodium butyrate(SB) in liquid feeds(milk, milk replacer, and the mixture of both)on the growth performance, rumen fermentation, and serum antioxidant capacity and immunoglobins in dairy calves before weaning. Forty healthy female Holstein calves(4-day-old, 40 ± 5 kg of body weight) were housed in individual hutches and randomly allocated to 1 of 4 treatment groups(n = 10 per group) using the RAND function in Excel. The control group was fed no SB(SB0), while the other three groups were supplemented with 15(SB15),30(SB30), or 45(SB45) g/d of SB mixed into liquid feeds offered. The calves were initially fed milk only(days 2 to 20), then a mixture of milk and milk replacer(days 21 to 23), and finally milk replacer only(days 24 to 60).Results: The SB supplementation enhanced growth and improved feed conversion into body weight gain compared with the SB0 group, and the average daily gain increased quadratically with increasing SB supplementation. No significant effect on rumen pH;concentrations of NH_3-N, individual and total VFAs;or acetate:propionate(A:P) ratio was found during the whole experimental period. Serum glutathione peroxidase activity increased linearly with the increased SB supplementation, while the serum concentration of maleic dialdehyde linearly decreased. Serum concentrations of immunoglobulin A, immunoglobulin G, or immunoglobulin M were not affected by the SB supplementation during the whole experimental period.Conclusions: Under the conditions of this study, SB supplementation improved growth performance and antioxidant function in pre-weaned dairy calves. 3Inducible resistance to Fas-mediated apoptosis in B cells显示文摘Apoptosis produced in B cells through Fas (APO-1, CD95) triggering is regulated by signals derived from other surface receptors: CD40 engagement produces upregulation of Fas expres. sion and marked susceptibility to Fas-induced cell death, whereas antigen receptor engagement, or IL-4R engagement, inhibits Fas killing and in so doing induces a state of Fas-resistance, even in otherwise sensitive, CD40-stimulated targets. Surfaceim. munoglobulin and IL-4R utilize at least partially distinct pathways to produce Fas-resistance that differentially depend on PKC and STAT6, respectively. Further, surface immunoglob- 'lin signaling for inducible Fas-resistance bypasses Bib, requires NF-GB, and entails new macromolecular synthesis. Terminal effectors of B cell Fas-resistance include the known anti-apoptotic gene products, Bcl-xL and FLIP, and a novel anti-apoptotic gene that encodes FAIM (Fas Apoptosis Inhibitory Molecule). faim was identified by differential display and exists in two alternatively spliced forms; maim-S is broadly expressed, but faim-L expression is tissue-specific. The FAIM sequence is highly evolu tionarily conserved, suggesting an important role for this molecule throughout phylogeny. Inducible resistance to Fas killing is hypothesized to protect foreign antigen-specific B cells during potentially hazardous interactions with FasL-bearing T cells, whereas autoreactive B cells fail to become Fas-resistant and are deleted via Fas-dependent cytotoxicity. 4UV-B has larger negative impacts on invasive populations of Triadica sebifera but ozone impacts do not vary显示文摘Aims Abiotic stresses may interact with each other to determine impacts on plants so that their combined impact is less than or more than additive.Increasing UV-B radiation and surface ozone(O3)are two major components of global change that may have such interactive impacts.Moreover,invasive and native populations of plants may respond differently to stresses as they can vary in primary and secondary metabolism.Methods Here,we conducted a factorial field experiment with open-top chambers assigned to an ozone treatment(ambient,100 ppb,or 150 ppb)and UV-B treatment(ambient or increased 20%).We grew seedlings of native and invasive populations of Triadica sebifera in these chambers for one growing season.Important Findings Invasive plants grew faster than native plants in ambient UV-B but they did not differ significantly in elevated UV-B.Litter production of invasive plants was especially sensitive to UV-B in a way that increased with UV-B for native plants but decreased for invasive plants which may be important for nutrient cycling.In ambient UV-B,total mass decreased as ozone increased.Total mass was lower with elevated UV-B but there was no additional impact of increasing ozone.Leaf area did not decrease with UV-B so SLA and LAR were lowest at ambient ozone levels.These results suggest that the effects of ozone will depend on UV-B conditions perhaps due to changes in foliar traits.The traits that allow invasive populations of plants to be successful invaders may make them especially sensitive to UV-B which may reduce their success in future climatic conditions.Hong Wang Xiaochi Ma Ling Zhang Evan Siemann Jianwen Zou 2016Journal of Plant Ecology2016,9,1:3

6Soil Respiration and Litter Decomposition Increased Following Perennial Forb Invasion into an Annual Grassland显示文摘Exotic plant invasions may alter ecosystem carbon processes, especially when native plants are displaced by plants of a different functional group. Forb invasions into grasslands are common, yet little is known about how they impact carbon cycling. We conducted a field study over 2 years from April 2010 to March 2012 in China to examine changes in soil respiration(R_(soil)) following invasion of exotic perennial forb species(Alternanthera philoxeroides or Solidago canadensis) into an annual grassland dominated by a native annual graminoid(Eragrostis pilosa). Measurements of R_(soil)were taken once a week in stands of the native annual graminoid or one of the forb species using static chamber-gas chromatograph method. Aboveground litterfall of each of the three focal species was collected biweekly and litter decomposition rates were measured in a 6-month litterbag experiment. The monthly average and annual cumulative R_(soil)increased following invasion by either forb species. The increases in cumulative R_(soil)were smaller with invasion of Solidago(36%)than Alternanthera(65%). Both invasive forbs were associated with higher litter quantity and quality(e.g., C:N ratio) than the native annual graminoid. Compared to the native annual graminoid, the invasive forbs Alternanthera(155%) and Solidago(361%) produced larger amounts of more rapidly decomposing litter, with the litter decay constant k being 3.8, 2.0 and 1.0 for Alternanthera, Solidago and Eragrostis, respectively.
