| 2 | Image fusion based on expectation maximization algorithm and steerable pyramid显示文摘In this paper, a novel image fusion method based on the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm andsteerable pyramid is proposed. The registered images are first decomposed by using steerable pyramid.The EM algorithm is used to fuse the image components in the low frequency band. The selection methodinvolving the informative importance measure is applied to those in the high frequency band. | 3 | Sequence assembly using next generation sequencing data —challenges and solutions显示文摘Sequence assembling is an important step for bioinformatics study.With the help of next generation sequencing(NGS)technology,high throughput DNA fragment(reads)can be randomly sampled from DNA or RNA molecular sequence.However,as the positions of reads being sampled are unknown,assembling process is required for combining overlapped reads to reconstruct the original DNA or RNA sequence.Compared with traditional Sanger sequencing methods,although the throughput of NGS reads increases,the read length is shorter and the error rate is higher.It introduces several problems in assembling.Moreover,paired-end reads instead of single-end reads can be sampled which contain more information.The existing assemblers cannot fully utilize this information and fails to assemble longer contigs.In this article,we will revisit the major problems of assembling NGS reads on genomic,transcriptomic,metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data.We will also describe our IDBA package for solving these problems.IDBA package has adopted several novel ideas in assembling,including using multiple k,local assembling and progressive depth removal.Compared with existence assemblers,IDBA has better performance on many simulated and real sequencing datasets. | CHIN Francis Y.L. | 4 | Clinical significance of hepatic derangement in severe acute respiratory syndrome显示文摘AIM: Elevation of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level is commonly seen among patients suffering from severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). We report the progression and clinical significance of liver derangement in a large cohort of SARS patient.METHODS: Serial assay of serum ALT was followed in patients who fulfilled the WHO criteria of SARS. Those with elevated ALT were compared with those with normal liver functions for clinical outcome. Serology for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection was checked. Adverse outcomes were defined as oxygen desaturation, need of intensive care unit (ICU) and mechanical ventilation and death.RESULTS: Two hundred and ninety-four patients were included in this study. Seventy (24%) patients had elevated serum ALT on admission and 204 (69%) patients had elevated ALT during the subsequent course of illness. Using peak ALT >5×ULN as a cut-off and after adjusting for potential confounding factors, the odds ratio of peak ALT>5x ULN for oxygen desaturation was 3.24 (95%CI 1.23-8.59, P = 0.018), ICU care was 3.70 (95% CI 1.38-9.89, P = 0.009), mechanical ventilation was 6.64 (95%CI 2.22-19.81, P = 0.001) and death was 7.34(95%CI 2.28-24.89, P = 0.001). Ninety-three percent of the survived patients had ALT levels normalized or were on the improving trend during follow-up. Chronic hepatitis B was not associated with worse clinical outcomes.CONCLUSION: Reactive hepatitis is a common complication of SARS-coronavirus infection. | 12 | A united optimum images fusion based on analysis of color distortion显示文摘In remote sensing community, IHS (intensity, hue, and saturation) transform is one of the most commonly used fusion algorithm. A study on IHS fusion indicates that the color distortion cannot be avoided. Meanwhile, wavelet decomposition has a property of frequency division in transform domain. And the statistical property of wavelet coefficient reflects those significant features. So, a united optimal fusion method, which using the statistical property of wavelet decomposition and IHS transform on pixel and feature levels, is proposed. That is, the high frequency of intensity component I is fused on feature level with multi-resolution wavelet in IHS space, and the low frequency of intensity component I is fused on pixel level with optimal weight coefficients. Spectral information and spatial resolution are two performance indexes of optimal weight coefficients.
