| 6 | Groundwater contributions in water-salt balances of the lakes in the Badain Jaran Desert,China显示文摘Groundwater-fed lakes are essential for the ecology in arid and semiarid regions.As a typical arid region,the Badain Jaran Desert (BJD) is famous in the world for the presence of a large number of groundwater-fed saline lakes among the mega dunes.Based on the up to date geological surveys and observations,this study analyzed the groundwater contributions in water-salt balances of the lakes in the desert.We found different types of springs,including the sublacustrine springs that indicate an upward flow of groundwater under the lakebed.A simplified water balance model was developed to analyze the seasonal variations of water level in the Sumu Barun Jaran Lake,which revealed an approximately steady groundwater discharge in the lake and explained why the amplitude of seasonal changes in lake level is less than 0.5 m.In addition,a salt balance model was developed to evaluate the salt accumulations in the groundwater-fed lakes.The relative salt accumulation time is 800–7,000 years in typical saline lakes,which were estimated from the concentration of Cl-,indicating a long history evolution for the lakes in the BJD.Further researches are recommended to provide comprehensive investigations on the interactions between the lakes and groundwater in the BJD. | GONG Yanping WANG Xusheng HU B Xiao ZHOU Yangxiao HAO Chunbo WAN Li | 2016 | Journal of Arid Land2016,8,5: | 7 |
| 7 | Improvement of center segregation in high-carbon steel billets using soft reduction显示文摘Center segregation is the main reason for cup fracture of high-carbon wire rod during drawing. Therefore, to continuously produce cast billets with very low center segregation is an important objective. The soft reduction technology is considered to be an effective method to minimize center segregation. To elucidate the effect of soft reduction on the internal quality of high-carbon steel billets, soft reduction was applied with different solid fractions in the core area of billets in a laboratory casting machine. A coupled temperature/displacement finite element model was developed to calculate the solid fraction using the commercial software ABAQUS.Center segregation, center porosity, homogeneity of elements, and equiaxed crystal zone were obviously improved by applying soft reduction, especially when the solid fraction was less than 1.0. | 8 | Report on Childhood Obesity in China(8):Effects and Sustainability of Physical Activity Intervention on Body Composition of Chinese Youth显示文摘Objectives To determine whether a large-scale physical activity intervention could affect body composition in primary school students in Beijing,China.Methods The study design was one-year cluster randomized controlled trial of physical activity intervention(20 min of daily exercise in the classroom) with an additional year of follow-up among 4 700 students aged 8-11 years at baseline.Results After the one-year intervention,BMI increased by 0.56 kg/m^2(SD 1.15) in the intervention group and by 0.72 kg/m^2(SD 1.20) in the control group,with a mean difference of-0.15 kg/m^2(95%CI:-0.28 to-0.02).BMI z score decreased by-0.05(SD 0.44) in the intervention group,but increased by 0.01(SD 0.46) in the control group,with a mean difference of-0.07(-0.13 to-0.01).After another year of follow up,compared to the control group,children in the intervention group had significantly lower BMI(-0.13,-0.25 to-0.01),BMI z score(-0.05,-0.10 to-0.01),fat mass(-0.27 kg,-0.53 to-0.02) and percent body fat(-0.53,-1.00 to-0.05).The intervention had a more pronounced effect on weight,height,BMI,BMI z score,and body composition among obese children than among normal weight or overweight children.Compared to the control group,the intervention group had a significantly higher percentage of children who maintained or reduced their BMI z score at year 1(P=0.008) and year 2(P=0.04).Conclusions These findings suggest that 20 min of daily moderate to vigorous physical activity during the school year is a feasible and effective way to prevent excessive gain of body weight,BMI,and body fatness in primary school students. | YAN-PING LI XIAO=QI HU EVERT G. | 12 | Retrograde embolization technique of the right gastric artery during the implantation of port-catheter system for hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy显示文摘Objective:This study aimed to introduce and evaluate a new embolization technique for the right gastric artery(RGA) during percutaneous implantation of a port-catheter system for hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy(HAIC).Methods:From January 2013 to January 2017,159 patients with unresectable advanced liver cancer underwent percutaneous implantation of a port-catheter system.In 86 of these patients(56 men;aged 28-88 years;mean:60.6±12.0 years),in whom the RGA was obvious on arteriography,embolization of RGA was attempted using microcoils to protect the gastric mucosa during HAIC.In the first phase(first three years),antegrade embolization of the RGA using a 2.7 Fr microcatheter was performed in 55 patients.In the second phase(next two years),embolization of the RGA was attempted by combining antegrade embolization and retrograde embolization through the left gastric artery(LGA) in 31 patients.The success rates and the incidence of acute gastroduodenal mucosal toxicity(AGMT) in these two groups were compared.Results:The total success rate of the RGA embolization was 70.9%.The success rate was 83.9% in 31 patients who underwent combined antegrade and retrograde embolization,which was significantly higher than that of antegrade embolization alone(63.6%) performed in 55 patients(p=0.047).No complications related to embolization of RGA were documented.The incidence of AGMT was 29.1%(16/55) in patients in the first phase,which was significantly higher than that in the patients in the second phase(9.7%,3/31)(p=0.037).Conclusion: A combination of retrograde embolization via LGA could increase the success rates of RGA embolization and reduce the incidence of AGMT after HAIC. | Jungang Hu Guang Cao b Liang Xu Kanglian Zheng Xu Zhu Renjie Yang Xiao Wang Xiaodong Wang | 2021 | Journal of Interventional Medicine2021,4,1: | 3 |

| 15 | Common non-synonymous polymorphisms in the BRCA1 Associated RING Domain (BARD1) gene are associated with breast cancer susceptibility:a case-control analysis显示文摘The BRCA1 Associated RING Domain(BARD1) gene has been identified as a high penetrance gene for breast cancer, whose germline and somatic mutations were reported in both non-BRCA1/2 hereditary site-specific and sporadic breast cancer cases. BARD1 plays a crucial role in tumor repression, along with its heterodimeric partner BRCA1. In the current study, we tested the hypothesis that common non-synonymous polymorphisms in BARD1 are associated with breast cancer susceptibility in a case-control study of 507 patients with incident breast cancer and 539 frequency-matched cancer-free controls in Chinese women. We genotyped all three common(minor allele frequency (MAF) > 0.10) non-synonymous polymorphisms(Pro24Ser, Arg378Ser, and Val507Met) in BARD1. We found that the BARD1 Pro24Ser variant genotypes(24Pro/Ser and 24Ser/Ser) and Arg378Ser variant homozygote 378Ser/Ser were associated with a significantly decreased breast cancer risk, compared with their wild-type homozygotes, respectively. Furthermore, a significant locus-locus interaction was evident between Pro24Ser and Arg378Ser (P-int = 0.032). Among the 378Ser variant allele carriers, the 24Pro/Pro wild-type homozygote was associated with a significantly increased breast cancer risk (adjusted OR = 1.81, 95% CI = 1.11-2.95), but the subjects having 24Pro/Ser or Ser/Ser variant genotypes had a significantly decreased risk(adjusted OR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.56-0.99). In stratified analysis, this locus-locus interaction was more evident among subjects without family cancer history, those with positive estrogen receptor (ER) and individuals with negative progesterone receptor(PR). | 16 | Alcoholic hepatitis: The pivotal role of Kupffer cells显示文摘Kupffer cells play a central role in the pathogenesis of alcoholic hepatitis(AH). It is believed that alcohol increases the gut permeability that results in raised levels of serum endotoxins containing lipopolysaccharides(LPS). LPS binds to LPS-binding proteins and presents it to a membrane glycoprotein called CD14, which then activates Kupffer cells via a receptor called tolllike receptor 4. This endotoxin mediated activation of Kupffer cells plays an important role in the inflammatory process resulting in alcoholic hepatitis. There is no effective treatment for AH, although notable progress has been made over the last decade in understanding the underlying mechanism of alcoholic hepatitis. We specifically review the current research on the role of Kupffer cells in the pathogenesis of AH and the treatment strategies. | 19 | Hemolysis of PM_(10) on RBCs in vitro:An indoor air study in a coal-burning lung cancer epidemic area显示文摘Epidemiological studies have suggested that inhalation exposure to indoor ambient air from coal-burning environments is causally associated with respiratory health risks.In order to explore the toxicological mechanisms behind the adverse health effects,the hemolytic activity of PM_(10)(particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 10 um or less)samples collected from homes burning coal in the recognized China'cancer village'Xuanwei were evaluated and matched against their trace elemental contents.The results demonstrated that the hemolytic activity of indoor PM_(10) in coal-burning environments ranged from 4.28%to 5.24%,with a clear positive dose-response relationship.Although low dose samples exhibited a reduced hemolytic activity,PM_(10) could have a toxic effect upon people in a coal-burning indoor environment for extended time periods.The concentrations of analyzed trace elements in PM_(10) samples ranged from 6966 to 12,958 ppm.Among the analyzed elements,Zn,Ti,Ni,Cu,Pb,Ba,Mn,Cr and V were found at higher concentrations and accounted for over 95%of the total elements.The concentrations of total analyzed elements in the PM_(10) samples revealed a significant positive correlation with PM_(10) hemolytic activity.Of the analyzed elements,Zn,Pb and Cs positively correlated with hemolysis,while Li,U and V negatively correlated with the hemolysis of human red blood cells(RBCs).Therefore,the heavy metal elements could be one of the main factors responsible for the hemolytic capacity of indoor PM_(10) in coal-burning environments. | Mengyuan Zhang Longyi Shao Tim Jones Ying Hu Rachel Adams Kelly BéruBé | 2022 | Geoscience Frontiers2022,13,1: | 2 |
