| 2 | Spatial Distribution of Heavy Metals in Agricultural Soils of an Industry-Based Peri-Urban Area in Wuxi, China显示文摘In industry-oriented peri-urban areas, the heavy metal accumulation in soils caused by industrialization has become a potential threat. The top soil samples from 27 paddy fields and 75 vegetable fields were collected from a typical industry-based peri-urban area of about 8 km2 in Wuxi, China, to study the accumulation and distribution of As, Hg, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, and Cd in comparison with heavy metal contents in soils near developed industrial sites (Guangzhou, China; Wallsend Burn of Tyneside, UK; and Osnabriick, Germany). Kriging interpolation was used to determine the metals' spatial distribution. The results showed that most soils, compared to the background values, contained elevated contents of As, Hg, Cu, Zn, and Pb with some having elevated contents of Cd and Cr. Except for less than 10% of the soil samples of Cu, Zn and Cd contents, these heavy metal contents were lower than the soil threshold levels of the Grade II criteria for the Chinese environmental quality standard. Probably, because of the scattered distribution and diversity of industries in the study area, spatial distributions of these heavy metals from Kriging interpolation indicated little similarity. Nevertheless, when compared with other areas in the Taihu Lake region, mean contents of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd were relatively high in the Wuxi peri-urban area. | 3 | Reconstruction of May——July precipitation in the north Helan Mountain, Inner Mongolia since A.D. 1726 from tree-ring late-wood widths显示文摘By analyzing statistical characteristics of five tree-ring standard chronologies, early-wood ring width (EWW), late-wood ring width (LWW), total ring width (TRW), minimum early-wood density (MinD), maximum late-wood density (MaxD) and, their climatic response re-spectively, we reconstructed the May to July precipitation using late-wood ring width (LWW) over the north Helan Mountain since A.D. 1726. The explained variance is 42% (R2adj = 41%, F = 31.46, p < 0.000001). After 11-a moving average, the explained variance reaches 82% (F = 156.9, p < 0.05). On the decadal scale, the rainfall reconstruction of the northern Helan Mountain displays a quite similar variation pattern with that of the April to early July precipitation in Baiyinaobao, east of Inner Mongolia for the last 150 years. It may reflect the intensity variation of the East Asia Summer Monsoon front to a certain extent. | 6 | FRACTIONAL-STEP FINITE ELEMENT METHOD FOR CALCULATION OF 3-D FREE SURFACE PROBLEM USING LEVEL SET METHOD显示文摘A two-step Taylor-Galerkin fractional-step finite element method, which is of second order accuracy in space and time, was proposed for the three-dimensional free surface problem. With this method, the intermediate velocity was explicitly obtained by neglecting pressure gradient term, and then the velocity was corrected by adding the effects of pressure once the pressure field had been obtained from the pressure Poisson equation. The level set approach was applied to track implicitly the free surface. In order to track the free surface, the transport equation of the level set function was solved at each time step and the level set function is reinitialized through iteration to maintain it as a distance function. The governing equations of the system were discretized by the two- step Taylor-Galerkin method, which is of high-order accuracy and easy to be used. | 8 | MHD and kinetic analysis of flow bursts in the Earth's plasma sheet显示文摘In an attempt to study the flow bursts in the Earth’s plasma sheet we select an event that took place on August 7,2004 in the expansion phase of a substorm,using data from the geomagnetic index,solar wind data,plasma and magnetic field observations from C1 Cluster satellite(the Cluster mission has 4 satellites)and from Double Star TC-1 satellite.In MHD approach,TC-1 firstly observed the tailward flow,then the earthward,and finally the flow alternated in two directions.C1 firstly observed the earthward plasma flow,and then the tailward plasma flow.Before flow bursts are observed by TC-1 and C1,there are disturbances in local entropy with their tailward local entropy larger than those of the earthward.The kinetic features of the plasma flow observed by C1 are similar to those in MHD.However,kinetic characteristics of the plasma flow observed by TC-1 are far more than the description in MHD.The inadequacy mainly exists in two cases:(i)the firstly enhanced tailward flows given in MHD are found without significant increase of the energetic tailward flux;(ii)the almost stagnant flow in MHD is composed of the enhanced energetic ion flux in both earthward and tailward directions.The earthward flow burst observed by TC-1 might be multiple overshoots and rebounds.The earthward flow burst observed by C1 might be simply rebounded in the near-Earth.The pulsation observed by C1 is earlier than that observed by TC-1 with the former intensity less than that of the latter.After the energetic ion flux in the tailward direction is significantly enhanced,the power spectrum intensity of the ULF wave commences to increase obviously,which may suggest that the stream instability is closely correlated with ULF pulsations. | MA YuDuan CAO JinBin FU HuiShan REME H. | 11 | Effect of Elevated CO_2 and Drought on Soil Microbial Communities Associated with Andropogon gerardii显示文摘Our understanding of the effects of elevated atmospheric CO2,singly and in combination with other environmental changes,on plant-soil interactions is incomplete.Elevated CO2 effects on C4 plants,though smaller than on C3 species,are mediated mostly via decreased stomatal conductance and thus water loss.Therefore,we characterized the interactive effect of elevated CO2 and drought on soil microbial communities associated with a dominant C4 prairie grass,Andropogon gerardii Vitman.Elevated CO2 and drought both affected resources available to the soil microbial community.For example,elevated CO2 increased the soil C:N ratio and water content during drought,whereas drought alone decreased both.Drought significantly decreased soil microbial biomass.In contrast,elevated CO2 increased biomass while ameliorating biomass decreases that were induced under drought.Total and active direct bacterial counts and carbon substrate use (overall use and number of used sources) increased significantly under elevated CO2.Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis revealed that drought and elevated CO2,singly and combined,did not affect the soil bacteria community structure.We conclude that elevated CO2 alone increased bacterial abundance and microbial activity and carbon use,probably in response to increased root exudation.Elevated CO2 also limited drought-related impacts on microbial activity and biomass,which likely resulted from decreased plant water use under elevated CO2.These are among the first results showing that elevated CO2 and drought work in opposition to modulate plant-associated soil-bacteria responses,which should then influence soil resources and plant and ecosystem function. | Issmat I. | 12 | A Bayesian Network Approach for Offshore Risk Analysis Through Linguistic Variables显示文摘This paper presents a new approach for offshore risk analysis that is capable of dealing with linguistic probabilities in Bayesian networks(BNs).In this paper,linguistic probabilities are used to describe occurrence likelihood of hazardous events that may cause possible accidents in offshore operations.In order to use fuzzy information,an f-weighted valuation function is proposed to transform linguistic judgements into crisp probability distributions which can be easily put into a BN to model causal relationships among risk factors.The use of linguistic variables makes it easier for human experts to express their knowledge,and the transformation of linguistic judgements into crisp probabilities can significantly save the cost of computation,modifying and maintaining a BN model.The flexibility of the method allows for multiple forms of information to be used to quantify model relationships,including formally assessed expert opinion when quantitative data are lacking,or when only qualitative or vague statements can be made.The model is a modular representation of uncertain knowledge caused due to randomness,vagueness and ignorance.This makes the risk analysis of offshore engineering systems more functional and easier in many assessment contexts.Specifically,the proposed f-weighted valuation function takes into account not only the dominating values,but also the α-level values that are ignored by conventional valuation methods.A case study of the collision risk between a Floating Production,Storage and Off-loading(FPSO) unit and the authorised vessels due to human elements during operation is used to illustrate the application of the proposed model. | Ren J. | 16 | MEASUREMENT OF SOLID SLURRY FLOW VIA CORRELATION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC FLOW METER,ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE TOMOGRAPHY AND MECHANISTIC MODELLING显示文摘The study presented here was carried out to obtain the actual solids flow rate by the combination of electrical resistance tomography and electromagnetic flow meter.A new in-situ measurement method based on measurements of the Electromagnetic Flow Meters(EFM) and Electrical Resistance Tomography(ERT) to study the flow rates of individual phases in a vertical flow was proposed.The study was based on laboratory experiments that were carried out with a 50 mm vertical flow rig for a number of sand concentrations and different mixture velocities.A range of sand slurries with median particle size from 212 μm to 355 μm was tested.The solid concentration by volume covered was 5% and 15%,and the corresponding density of 5% was 1078 kg/m3 and of 15% was 1238 kg/m3.The flow velocity was between 1.5 m/s and 3.0 m/s.A total of 6 experimental tests were conducted.The equivalent liquid model was adopted to validate in-situ volumetric solids fraction and calculate the slip velocity.The results show that the ERT technique can be used in conjunction with an electromagnetic flow meter as a way of measurement of slurry flow rate in a vertical pipe flow.However it should be emphasized that the EFM results must be treated with reservation when the flow pattern at the EFM mounting position is a non-homogenous flow.The flow rate obtained by the EFM should be corrected considering the slip velocity and the flow pattern. | XU Jing-yu WU Ying-xiang ZHENG Zhi-chu WANG M. | 17 | Effects of Plant Age and Rock Phosphate on Quality and Nutrient Release of Legume Residue显示文摘An incubation experiment was carried out on plateau and slope fields to investigate the effect of plant age and rock phosphate (RP) on the organic resource (OR) quality and available N and P release of the legume residues, including standing biomass and surface litter. The legumes, Mucuna pruriens (L.) and Lablab purpureus (L.), were treated with or without Togo rock phosphate (RP) and were sampled at 12, 18, 24 and 30 weeks after planting. Results showed that the application of RP significantly affected the P content of the legume residues on the plateau field for the first 18 weeks, but not the other OR quality parameters, nor their N mineralization, or P release parameters. Although application of RP led to higher P contents in both legumes on the plateau field, the P contents were still far below those observed on the slope field. For both species, the biomass age appeared to have a major impact on their N, P, and polyphenol contents, but not on the lignin content. At 24 weeks, both legume N and P contents dropped to about half their values at 12 weeks of age. Residue age also significantly affected N mineralization both with and without RP addition and the net Olsen-P with RP addition. The younger residues generally led to higher N mineralization and net Olsen-P content than the older residues. The best immediate responses to herbaceous legume addition were expected from younger materials, but often at the cost of the total biomass produced and the possibility to produce seeds. | 18 | Census of Kuiper Comets-the TAOS Project显示文摘Cometary nuclei, the remnant icy bodies of planet formation, located at the outer edge of the solar system, are relatively poorly studied because of their small sizes and thus faintness. Thus far more than a hundred large members (size about 100 km) of this cometary population in the Kuiper belt have been identified. Smaller bodies (10 km) are much too faint to image directly and their number so far can only be extrapolated on theoretical grounds. The Taiwan-America Occultation Survey (TAOS) will conduct a census of the number of Kuiper belt objects down to a few km size by monitoring chance stellar occultations by these cometary nuclei. We will set up an array of small (50cm), wide-field (f/1 9) telescopes, each equipped with a 2K squared CCD camera, along a 7 km baseline in central Taiwan at an elevation above ~ 3000 m. The robot telescopes will operate in a coincidence mode, so the sequence and timing of any candidate occultation event can be recorded and distinguished against a false detection. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the National Central University, and the Academia Sinica, will each contribute one telescope system. Researchers from an international variety of institutes are also participating in the project. Our experiment provides the only means to study the cometary population in the small-sized end of the distrbution.
