| 3 | Heavy Metal Release from Some Industrial Wastes: Influence of Organic and Inorganic Acids, Clay Minerals, and Nanoparticles显示文摘Knowledge about heavy metal release from industrial solid wastes(ISWs) is crucial for better management of their environmental risks. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of organic and inorganic acids, clay minerals, and nanoparticles(NPs) on the release of heavy metals from sugar factory waste, ceramic factory waste, leather factory waste, and stone cutting waste. The influence of the extractants on heavy metal release from these ISWs was in the following descending order: citric acid > oxalic acid > nitric acid≥ sulfuric acid > Ca Cl2. Addition of clay minerals and NPs as adsorbents decreased heavy metal release, which was significantly lower in NP-treated wastes than in the clay mineral-treated wastes. On the other hand, the presence of organic and inorganic acids increased heavy metal adsorption by NPs and clay minerals. | 4 | Experimental evaluation of mechanically stabilized earth walls with recycled crumb rubbers显示文摘Traditional techniques for treatment of waste rubber, such as burning, generate some highly nondegradable synthetic materials that cause unrepairable environmental damages by releasing heavy metals, such as arsenic, chromium, lead, manganese and nickel. For this, scrap tires are used as lightweight alternative materials in many engineering applications, such as retaining wall backfilling. In the present study, 90 laboratory models were prepared to evaluate the stability of mechanically stabilized earth(MSE) walls with plate anchors. Then, the bearing capacity and horizontal displacements of the retaining walls were monitored by exerting a static loading to investigate the effects of adding different contents(5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt% and 20 wt%) of recycled crumb rubber(RCR) to the fill of a mechanically stabilized retaining wall with plate anchors. To visualize the critical slip surface of the wall, the particle image velocimetry(PIV) technique was employed. Results showed that the circular anchor plates almost continually provided a higher bearing capacity and wall stability than the square plates. Moreover, the backfill with 15 wt% RCR provided the maximum bearing capacity of the wall. Increasing the weight percentage of RCR to 20 wt% resulted in a significant reduction in horizontal displacement of the wall,which occurred due to the decrease in lateral earth pressure against the whole walls. | 6 | Leaf macro-and micro-morphological altitudinal variability of Carpinus betulus in the Hyrcanian forest (Iran)显示文摘We investigated the altitudinal variation of Carpinus betulus L. in the Hyrcanian forest using leaf macro-morphological and micro-morphological traits. We collected a total of 1600 leaves from two locations. In each location, we sampled six populations along an altitudinal gradient ranging from 100 m to 1,150 m. We found that trees in the higher elevations have smaller leaf lamina than those in the lower elevations. In contrast, leaf mass per area was high at low altitudes and increased newly at the higher ones. Stomatal dimension was negatively correlated with elevation, while stomatal density was positively correlated with elevation. We also found that two transects showed the same plasticity trend. Leaf area showed the highest plasticity, while the number of veins showed the lowest plasticity. This study shows that altitude, and related temperature and rainfall, represents an important driving force in Carpinus betulus leaf morphological variation. | 7 | Tetracycline-inducible protein expression in pancreatic cancer cells: Effects of CapG overexpression显示文摘AIM: To establish stable tetracycline-inducible pancreatic cancer cell lines. METHODS: Suit-2, MiaPaca-2, and Panc-1 cells were transfected with a second generation reverse tetracycline-controlled transactivator protein (rtTA2S-M2), under the control of either a cytomegalovirus (CMV) or a chicken β-actin promoter, and the resulting clones were characterised.RESULTS: Use of the chicken (β-actin) promoter proved superior for both the production and maintenance of doxycycline-inducible cell lines. The system proved versatile, enabling transient inducible expression of a variety of genes, including GST-P, CYP2E1, S100A6, and the actin capping protein, CapG. To determine the physiological utility of this system in pancreatic cancer cells, stable inducible CapG expressors were established. Overexpressed CapG was localised to the cytoplasm and the nuclear membrane, but was not observed in the nucleus. High CapG levels were associated with enhanced motility, but not with changes to the cell cycle, or cellular proliferation. In CapG-overexpressing cells, the levels and phosphorylation status of other actin-moduating proteins (Cofilin and Ezrin/Radixin) were not altered. However, preliminary analyses suggest that the levels of other cellular proteins, such as ornithine aminotransferase and enolase, are altered upon CapG induction. | 8 | Skeletal loading regulates breast cancer-associated osteolysis in a loading intensity-dependent fashion显示文摘Osteocytes are mechanosensitive bone cells, but little is known about their effects on tumor cells in response to mechanical stimulation. We treated breast cancer cells with osteocyte-derived conditioned medium(CM) and fluid flow-treated conditioned medium(FFCM) with 0.25 Pa and 1 Pa shear stress. Notably, CM and FFCM at 0.25 Pa induced the mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition(MET), but FFCM at 1 Pa induced the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition(EMT). This suggested that the effects of fluid flow on conditioned media depend on flow intensity. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer(FRET)-based evaluation of Src activity and vinculin molecular force showed that osteopontin was involved in EMT and MET switching. A mouse model of tumorinduced osteolysis was tested using dynamic tibia loadings of 1, 2, and 5 N. The low 1 N loading suppressed tumor-induced osteolysis, but this beneficial effect was lost and reversed with loads at 2 and 5 N, respectively. | 9 | Multivariate Statistical Analysis of Potassium Status in Agricultural Soils in Hamadan,Western Iran显示文摘Multivariate statistical technique was used to determine the potassium (K+) status and to assess soil fertility and K leaching potential in some calcareous soils. Water-soluble K+ (H2O-K) and ammonium acetate-extractable K+ (NH4OAc-K) ranged from 0.019 to 0.590 (mean value 0.095) and 0.390 to 3.320 (mean value 0.954) cmolc kg-1, respectively. The nitric acid-extractable K+ (HNO3-K) varied from 1.03 to 13.63 (mean value 5.37) cmolc kg-1. The proportion of H2O-K ranged from 0.34% to 14.8% of HNO3-K, and 2.2% to 53.2% of NH4OAc-K. The proportion of NH4OAc-K ranged from 5.8% to 80% of HNO3-K (mean value 23% of HNO3-K). The tendency of the soil to lose K+ by leaching was examined by determining K+-Ca2+ exchange isotherms. The soils mostly had moderate to high values of K+ sorption capacity, ranging from 10% to 58% (mean value 28%) of added K+. The Gapon coefficient varied widely from 1.1 to 12.0 (L mol-1)-1/2. Clay minerals were dominated by illite, smectites and vermiculite with small amounts of kaolinite. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the first four components accounted for 27.7%, 21.4%, 13.8%, and 8.9% of total variation, respectively. The non-hierarchical cluster analysis (k-means clustering) grouped 75 sampling sites into six clusters, based on the similarity of soil quality characteristics. The results suggested that such classes could form a basis for variable-rate application to maintain an adequate K+ status for crop production and to reduce potential K+ loss from soil by leaching. | M. | 10 | Phase Diversity Electro-optic Sampling:A new approach to single-shot terahertz waveform recording显示文摘Recording electric field evolution in single-shot with THz bandwidth is needed in science including spectroscopy,plasmas,biology,chemistry,Free-Electron Lasers,accelerators,and material inspection.However,the potential application range depends on the possibility to achieve sub-picosecond resolution over a long time window,which is a largely open problem for single-shot techniques.To solve this problem,we present a new conceptual approach for the so-called spectral decoding technique,where a chirped laser pulse interacts with a THz signal in a Pockels crystal,and is analyzed using a grating optical spectrum analyzer.By borrowing mathematical concepts from photonic time stretch theory and radio-frequency communication,we deduce a novel dual-output electro-optic sampling system,for which the input THz signal can be numerically retrieved—with unprecedented resolution—using the so-called phase diversity technique.We show numerically and experimentally that this approach enables the recording of THz waveforms in single-shot over much longer durations and/or higher bandwidth than previous spectral decoding techniques.We present and test the proposed DEOS(Diversity Electro-Optic Sampling)design for recording 1.5 THz bandwidth THz pulses,over 20 ps duration,in single-shot.Then we demonstrate the potential of DEOS in accelerator physics by recording,in two successive shots,the shape of 200 fs RMS relativistic electron bunches at European X-FEL,over 10 ps recording windows.The designs presented here can be used directly for accelerator diagnostics,characterization of THz sources,and single-shot Time-Domain Spectroscopy. | Eléonore Roussel Christophe Szwaj Clément Evain Bernd Steffen Christopher Gerth Bahram Jalali Serge Bielawski | 2022 | Light(Science & Applications)2022,11,1: | 3 |

| 15 | Warped time lens in temporal imaging for optical real-time data compression显示文摘We introduce for the first time the concept of anamorphic temporal imaging and its application to analog data compression in a time lens.Placed in front of a conventional spectrometer,this technique enhances the spectral resolution and the update rate.More importantly,it performs real-time optical data compression to reduce the volume of the generated digital data.Our technique introduces the concept of the warped time lens.We show that a specific class of warped time-to-frequency mapping operations combined with the nonlinear operation inherent in a photo-detector compresses the time-bandwidth product in a temporal imaging system.We employ our newly introduced Stretched Modulation Distribution to design the warp profile.Using this method,the narrow spectral features beyond the spectrometer resolution can be captured and at the same time the output bandwidth and hence the record length is minimized.The reduction in the record length results in higher update rate for the spectrometer without sacrificing the spectral resolution or bandwidth.Our method also benefits from amplitude and phase detection to recover the input complex-field spectrum.By compressing the time-bandwidth product,anamorphictemporal imaging addresses the Big Data problem in such high-throughput instruments. | Mohammad H.Asghari Bahram Jalali | 2014 | Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,22: | 2 |

| 17 | Cross-flow analysis of injection wells in a multilayered reservoir显示文摘During fluid injection into a multilayered reservoir,a different pressure gradient is generated across the face of each permeable layer.This pressure gradient generates driving forces in the wellbore during well shut-in that causes the injected fluid moves from higher pressure layers to lower pressure layers,a phenomenon known as interwell cross-flow.Cross-flow behavior depends on the initial pressure in the permeable layers and may be referred to as natural cross-flow(identical or natural initial pressures)and forced cross-flow(different initial pressures because of exploitation).Cross-flow may induce sand production and liquefaction in the higher pressure layers as well as formation damage,filter cake build-up and permeability reduction in the lower pressure layers.Thus,understanding cross-flow during well shut-in is important from a production and reservoir engineering perspective,particularly in unconsolidated or poorly consolidated sandstone reservoirs.Natural and forced cross-flow is modeled for some injection wells in an oil reservoir located at North Sea.The solution uses a transient implicit finite difference approach for multiple sand layers with different permeabilities separated by impermeable shale layers.Natural and forced cross-flow rates for each reservoir layer during shut-in are calculated and compared with different production logging tool(PLT)measurements.It appears that forced cross-flow is usually more prolonged and subject to a higher flow rate when compared with natural cross-flow,and is thus worthy of more detailed analysis. | Mohammadreza Jalali Jean-Michel Embry Francesco Sanfilippo Frederic J.Santarelli Maurice B.Dusseault | 2016 | Petroleum2016,2,3: | 2 |
| 18 | CAR-T cells: Early successes in blood cancer and challenges in solid tumors显示文摘New approaches to cancer immunotherapy have been developed, showing the ability to harness the immune system to treat and eliminate cancer. For many solid tumors, therapy with checkpoint inhibitors has shown promise. For hematologic malignancies, adoptive and engineered cell therapies are being widely developed, using cells such as T lymphocytes, as well as natural killer(NK) cells, dendritic cells, and potentially others. Among these adoptive cell therapies, the most active and advanced therapy involves chimeric antigen receptor(CAR)-T cells, which are T cells in which a chimeric antigen receptor is used to redirect specificity and allow T cell recognition, activation and killing of cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma. Two autologous CAR-T products have been approved by several health authorities,starting with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA) in 2017. These products have shown powerful, inducing, long-lasting effects against B cell cancers in many cases. In distinction to the results seen in hematologic malignancies, the field of using CAR-T products against solid tumors is in its infancy. Targeting solid tumors and trafficking CAR-T cells into an immunosuppressive microenvironment are both significant challenges.
