1Bone grafts and biomaterials substitutes for bone defect repair:A review显示文摘Bone grafts have been predominated used to treat bone defects,delayed union or non-union,and spinal fusion in orthopaedic clinically for a period of time,despite the emergency of synthetic bone graft substitutes.Nevertheless,the integration of allogeneic grafts and synthetic substitutes with host bone was found jeopardized in long-term follow-up studies.Hence,the enhancement of osteointegration of these grafts and substitutes with host bone is considerably important.To address this problem,addition of various growth factors,such as bone morphogenetic proteins(BMPs),parathyroid hormone(PTH)and platelet rich plasma(PRP),into structural allografts and synthetic substitutes have been considered.Although clinical applications of these factors have exhibited good bone formation,their further application was limited due to high cost and potential adverse side effects.Alternatively,bioinorganic ions such as magnesium,strontium and zinc are considered as alternative of osteogenic biological factors.Hence,this paper aims to review the currently available bone grafts and bone substitutes as well as the biological and bio-inorganic factors for the treatments of bone defect.Wenhao Wang Kelvin W.K.Yeung 2017Bioactive Materials2017,2,4:66

3Combined resection and radiofrequency ablation for multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma: Prognosis and outcomes显示文摘AIM: To analyze the combined treatment of resection and intraoperative radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma in terms of prognosis and surgical outcomes.METHODS: This study was a retrospective case comparison study using prospectively collected data. The study covered the period from April 2001 to December 2006. The data of 200 patients with histologically confirmed hepatocellular carcinoma were reviewed. Nineteen patients (17 men and 2 women) having received resection in combination with RFA were chosen as subjects of the study (the combination group). Fiftyfour patients (43 men and 11 women) having received resection alone were selected for comparison (the resection group). The two groups matched tumor number and tumor size, and all the patients in the two groups displayed no tumor rupture, major vascular involvement and distant metastasis. Their demographics, preoperative assessment, disease recurrence patterns, overall survival and diseasefree survival were compared.RESULTS: In the combination group, the medianage was 65 years (range, 3477 years), the median tumor number was 3 (range, 29), and the median tumor size was 6 cm (range, 1.214 cm). In the resection group, the median age was 51.5 years (range, 2780 years, P = 0.003), the median tumor number was 3 (range, 29, P = 0.574), and the median tumor size was 6 cm (range, 114 cm, P = 0.782). The two groups were similar in characteristics of tumors and comorbidities, and had comparable results in preoperative liver function tests. All patients had ChildPugh class A status. Bilobar involvement occurred in 14 patients (73.6%) in the combination group and 3 patients (5.5%) in the resection group (P = 0.04). Six patients (32%) in the combination group and 35 patients (65%) in the resection group underwent major hepatectomy. Thirteen patients (68%) in the combination group and 19 patients (35%) in the resection group underwent minor hepatectomy (P = 0.012). The combination group had fewer major resections (32% vs 65%, P = 0.012), less blood loss (400 vs 657 mL, P = 0.007), shorter operation time (270 vs 400 min, P = 0.001), and shorter hospital stay (7 vs 8.5 d, P = 0.042). 4基于各向异性测度的路面三维图像裂缝识别显示文摘为准确而完整地识别路面裂缝,提出了基于1 mm/像素的路面三维图像裂缝自动识别算法.该算法主要包括各向异性测度计算与自适应优化阈值分割、深度验证和多分辨率去噪处理3个部分.首先,针对路面图像像素特征,基于0°、45°、90°和135°四个方向的线性邻域的均值和标准差计算每个像素的各向异性测度(表征方向性的强弱),并应用最大类间方差法确定最优阈值,将路面图像分为强方向性和弱方向性像素两类;其次,根据半径为d的正方形邻域深度均值设定阈值,用方向性强且深度低于或等于该阈值的像素形成初步的裂缝图像;最后,将裂缝图像划分为多个子块,设计去噪模板对裂缝图像进行滑动窗口去噪处理,获得最终裂缝图像.基于166幅含有各类裂缝的三维路面图像(2 048×2 048像素)进行测试分析,结果显示,本文算法获得了较高的准确率(均值91.57%)和召回率(均值81.29%),最终以84.26%的F1均值优于种子识别算法(F1均值69.19%)、Canny边缘检测(F1均值8.15%)和OTSU分割(F1均值5.11%).彭博 WANG Kelvin C.P. 陈成 蒋阳升 2014西南交通大学学报2014,49,5:13
5Construction of TiO2/silane nanofilm on AZ31 magnesium alloy for controlled degradability and enhanced biocompatibility显示文摘A TiO2 nanofilm was prepared on the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy with controllable thickness through atomic layer deposition(ALD) technique, which can adjust the corrosion behaviors of AZ31 Mg alloy.Compared with the untreated Mg alloys, corrosion current densities(icorr)can decline by 58% in the 200-cycles TiO2-covered Mg alloy and further decline by up to 74% with the thickness of nanofilm up to 63 nm(400 cycles).The subsequent modification with a cross-linked conversion layer of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES) by a dipping method can produce a compact silane coating on TiO2 nanofilm, which can seal pinholes of TiO2 nanofilm and serve as a barrier to further adjust the corrosion behavior of the substrate.The icorrcan decline about two orders of magnitude in the TiO2/silane composite coating.Making the adjustable corrosion rate come true, which can be attributed to the precise control on the thickness of metal oxide nanofilm and additional protection from the compact silane coating.In vitro study discloses that the TiO2/silane hybrid coating shows higher expression of alkaline phosphatase(ALP)and can promote cellular adhesion and proliferation with better cytocompatibility than untreated Mg alloy.Lei Huang Kun Su Yu-Feng Zheng Kelvin Wai-Kwok Yeung Xiang-Mei Liu 2019Rare Metals2019,38,6:9
6Buttress plate fixation of coronoid process fractures via a medial approach显示文摘Purpose:To assess the clinical and radiographic outcomes of coronoid process fractures surgically managed with buttress plate fixation via a medial approach.Methods:A retrospective review of all coronoid fractures surgically fixed in our institution using a buttress plate technique via a medial approach between June 2012 and April 2015 by the senior author was performed.These fractures were all sizeable fractures contributing to persistent elbow instability in terrible triad or varus posteromedial rotatory instability injury patterns.A prospective telephone questionnaire was conducted to assess patient outcomes using the disabilities of the arm,shoulder and hand(DASH)score and Mayo hlbow performance score(MEPS).Results:Twelve patients were included in the study,comprising 10 males and 2 females with an average age of 39 years(range,19-72 years).Mean follow-up was 16 months(range.4-18 months).The average time to radiographic union was 4 months(range.3-7 months).Range of motion measurements at final follow-up were obtained in 11 out of 12 patients,with one patient defaulting follow-up.All 11 patients displayed a functional elbow range of motion of at least 30°-130°.with an average arc of motion of 130°(range.110°-140°).mean elbow flexion of 134°(range.110°-140°)and mean flexion contracture of 3°(range.0°-20°).The mean DASH score was 16(range.2.5-43.8)and the mean MEPS was 75(range.65-100).Complications observed included one patient with a superfic ial wound infection which resolved with a course of oral antibiotics and one patient with radiographic evidence of heterotopic ossification which was conservatively managed.No residual elbow instability was observed and no reoperations were performed.Conclusion:Buttress plate fixation via a medial approach of coronoid process fractures that contribute to persistent elbow instability represents a reliable method of treatment that produces satisfactory and predictable outcomes.Kelvin Kah Ho Lor Dong Hao Toon Andy Teck Huat Wee 2019Chinese Journal of Traumatology2019,22,5:9
7Controlled release and biocompatibility of polymer/titania nanotube array system on titanium implants显示文摘Bacterial infection and tissue inflammation are the major causes of early failure of titanium-based orthopedic implants;thus,surgical implants with tunable drug releasing properties represent an appealing way to address some of these problems of bacterial infection and tissue inflammation in early age of orthopedic implants.In this work,a hybrid surface system composed of biodegradable poly(lactic-coglycolic acid)(PLGA)and titania nanotubes(TNTs)has been successfully constructed on Ti implants with the aim of preventing bacterial infection via long-term drug release.By varying the size of the TNTs and the thickness of the polymer film,the drug release profile can be tuned to achieve the optimal therapeutic action throughout the treatment time.The size of TNTs plays a dominant role in the drug loading dose of TNTs/PLGA hybrid coatings.In this work,TNTs with an average size of 80 nm can achieve the largest loading dose.Depending on the polymer thickness,significant improvement in the drug release characteristics is attained,for instance,reduced burst release(from 84%to 27%)and overall release time extended from 5 to over 40 days.In addition,the PLGA layers may favor the proliferation and osteogenesis of MC3T3-E1 mouse cells at an earlier stage.Therefore,this TNT/PLGA hybrid surface system can be employed as an effective bioplatform for improving both self-antibacterial performance and biocompatibility of Ti-based biomaterials.Tingting Wang Zhengyang Weng Xiangmei Liu Kelvin W.K.Yeung Haobo Pan Shuilin Wu 2017Bioactive Materials2017,2,1:8

10基于1mm精度路面三维图像的裂缝自动并行识别算法显示文摘为了快速、准确、完整地识别裂缝,基于1 mm/像素的路面三维图像提出了具有并行结构的裂缝自动识别算法.首先,进行降维处理,分别以像素(0,0)和(4,4)为起点将源图像划分为8×8像素的子块,获得2幅部分重叠的降维图像;然后,基于降维图像进行裂缝种子识别和裂缝连接,形成10个并列的子流程,从而产生10幅初步裂缝图像;最后,对10幅图像进行裂缝融合与滑动窗口去噪处理,获得裂缝图像.测试结果表明:提出的算法具有较高的准确率(平均92.56%)和召回率(平均90.59%),并以90.59%的F值优于Otsu阈值分割及Canny边缘检测算法;该算法的并行结构有利于程序并行化,能有效提高运算速度.彭博 蒋阳升 陈成 Kelvin C.P.Wang 2015东南大学学报(自然科学版)2015,45,6:8
11Automated pavement horizontal curve measurement methods based on inertial measurement unit and 3D profiling data显示文摘Pavement horizontal curve is designed to serve as a transition between straight segments,and its presence may cause a series of driving-related safety issues to motorists and drivers.As is recognized that traditional methods for curve geometry investigation are time consuming,labor intensive,and inaccurate,this study attempts to develop a method that can automatically conduct horizontal curve identification and measurement at network level.The digital highway data vehicle(DHDV) was utilized for data collection,in which three Euler angles,driving speed,and acceleration of survey vehicle were measured with an inertial measurement unit(IMU).The 3D profiling data used for cross slope calibration was obtained with PaveVision3 D Ultra technology at 1 mm resolution.In this study,the curve identification was based on the variation of heading angle,and the curve radius was calculated with kinematic method,geometry method,and lateral acceleration method.In order to verify the accuracy of the three methods,the analysis of variance(ANOVA) test was applied by using the control variable of curve radius measured by field test.Based on the measured curve radius,a curve safety analysis model was used to predict the crash rates and safe driving speeds at horizontal curves.Finally,a case study on 4.35 km road segment demonstrated that the proposed method could efficiently conduct network level analysis.Wenting Luo Lin Li Kelvin C.P.Wang 2016Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering(English Edition)2016,3,2:8

13Long-term survival after intraluminal brachytherapy for inoperable hilar cholangiocarcinoma: A case report显示文摘Surgical resection with a tumor-free margin is the onlycurative treatment for hilar cholangiocarcinoma (Klatskin tumor). However, over half of the patients present late with unresectable tumors. Radiotherapy using external beamirradiation or intraluminal brachytherapy (ILBT) has been used to treat unresectable hilar cholangiocarcinoma with satisfactory outcome. 14Ce and Er Co-doped TiO2 for rapid bacteria- killing using visible light显示文摘Bacterial infection and related diseases are threatening the health of human beings.Photocatalytic disinfection as a simple and low-cost disinfection strategy is attracting more and more attention.In this work,TiO2 nanoparticles(NPs)were modified by co-doping of Ce and Er using the sol-gel method,which endowed TiO2 NPs with enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance but not pure ultraviolet photocatalytic properties compared the untreated TiO2.Our results disclosed that as the doping content of Er increased,the photocatalytic activity of modified TiO2 NPs initially increased and subsequently decreased.The same trend occurred for Ce doping.When the doping dose of Er and Ce is 0.5 mol%and 0.2 mol%,the 0.5Ce0.2Ti-O calcined at 800℃ presented the best antibacterial properties,with the antibacterial efficiency of 91.23%and 92.8%for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli,respectively.The existence of Er ions is thought to successfully turn the near-infrared radiation into visible region,which is easier to be absorbed by TiO2 NPs.Meanwhile,the addition of Ce ions can effectively extend spectral response range and inhibit the recombination of electrons and holes,enhancing the photocatalytic disinfection activity of co-doped TiO2.Yawei Ren Yajing Han Zhaoyang Li Xiangmei Liu Shengli Zhu Yanqin Liang Kelvin Wai Kwok Yeung Shuilin Wu 2020Bioactive Materials2020,5,2:7
15Complete spontaneous regression of giant focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver: Magnetic resonance imaging evaluation with hepatobiliary contrast media显示文摘Focal nodular hyperplasia(FNH) of the liver is a benign lesion occurring in 0.6%-3% of the general population that probably reflects a local hyperplastic response of hepatocytes to a vascular abnormality. Most lesions are diagnosed incidentally and the natural history of the disease remains largely unknown. It has been shown that most FNH remain stable, or even regress, over a long follow-up period. We present a patient with FNH of the liver who was followed up for 7 years. A 26-yearold woman with a 5-year history of oral contraceptive use was referred to our hospital in February 2005 for further examination of a liver tumour. The diagnosis of FNH was made using magnetic resonance(MR) imaging with hepatospecific contrast media; this technique allows a correct diagnosis, in particular distinguishing FNH from hepatic adenoma, avoiding an invasive procedure such as the lesion biopsy. After 7-year from the diagnosis, we observed the complete spontaneous regression of the lesion by enhanced MR scanning. In this patient, discontinuation of oral contraceptive use and two childbirths may have influenced the natural history of FNH. To our knowledge, in the English literature there is no report illustrating a complete regression of giant FNH but only studies of decreasing in size. 16Optical coherence tomography angiography in diabetic retinopathy: a review of current applications显示文摘Background:Diabetic retinopathy(DR)is a leading cause of vision loss in adults.Currently,the standard imaging technique to monitor and prognosticate DR and diabetic maculopathy is dye-based angiography.With the introduction of optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA),it may serve as a potential rapid,non-invasive imaging modality as an adjunct.Main text:Recent studies on the role of OCTA in DR include the use of vascular parameters e.g.,vessel density,intercapillary spacing,vessel diameter index,length of vessels based on skeletonised OCTA,the total length of vessels,vascular architecture and area of the foveal avascular zone.These quantitative measures may be able to detect changes with the severity and progress of DR for clinical research.OCTA may also serve as a non-invasive imaging method to detect diabetic macula ischemia,which may help predict visual prognosis.However,there are many limitations of OCTA in DR,such as difficulty in segmentation between superficial and deep capillary plexus;and its use in diabetic macula edema where the presence of cystic spaces may affect image results.Future applications of OCTA in the anterior segment include detection of anterior segment ischemia and iris neovascularisation associated with proliferative DR and risk of neovascular glaucoma.Conclusion:OCTA may potentially serve as a useful non-invasive imaging tool in the diagnosis and monitoring of diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy in the future.Future studies may demonstrate how quantitative OCTA measures may have a role in detecting early retinal changes in patients with diabetes.Kai Yuan Tey Kelvin Teo Anna C.S.Tan Kavya Devarajan Bingyao Tan Jacqueline Tan Leopold Schmetterer Marcus Ang 2019Eye and Vision2019,6,1:6
17Regulation of extracellular bioactive cations in bone tissue microenvironment induces favorable osteoimmune conditions to accelerate in situ bone regeneration显示文摘The design of orthopedic biomaterials has gradually shifted from“immune-friendly”to“immunomodulatory,”in which the biomaterials are able to modulate the inflammatory response via macrophage polarization in a local immune microenvironment that favors osteogenesis and implant-to-bone osseointegration.Despite the well-known effects of bioactive metallic ions on osteogenesis,how extracellular metallic ions manipulate immune cells in bone tissue microenvironments toward osteogenesis and subsequent bone formation has rarely been studied.Herein,we investigate the osteoimmunomodulatory effect of an extracellular bioactive cation(Mg^(2+))in the bone tissue microenvironment using custom-made poly lactic-co-glycolic acid(PLGA)/MgO-alendronate microspheres that endow controllable release of magnesium ions.The results suggest that the Mg^(2+)-controlled tissue microenvironment can effectively induce macrophage polarization from the M0 to M2 phenotype via the enhancement of anti-inflammatory(IL-10)and pro-osteogenic(BMP-2 and TGF-β1)cytokines production.It also generates a favorable osteoimmune microenvironment that facilitates the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells.The in vivo results further verify that a large amount of bony tissue,with comparable bone mineral density and mechanical properties,has been generated at an early post-surgical stage in rat intramedullary bone defect models.This study demonstrates that the concept of in situ immunomodulated osteogenesis can be realized in a controlled magnesium tissue microenvironment.Zhengjie Lin Danni Shen Weixiao Zhou Yufeng Zheng Tiantian Kong Xuanyong Liu Shuilin Wu Paul K.Chu Ying Zhao Jun Wu Kenneth M.C.Cheung Kelvin W.K.Yeung 2021Bioactive Materials2021,6,8:5

20Photo-controlled degradation of PLGA/Ti3C2 hybrid coating on Mg-Sr alloy using near infrared light显示文摘A PLGA/Ti_(3)C_(2) hybrid coating was successfully deposited on the surface of magnesium-strontium(Mg-Sr)alloys.Compared with the corrosion current density(icorr)of the Mg-Sr alloy(7.13×10^−5 A/cm^2),the modified samples(Mg/PLGA/Ti_(3)C_(2))was lower by approximately four orders of magnitude(7.65×10^−9 A/cm^2).After near infrared 808 nm laser irradiation,the icorr of the modified samples increased to 3.48×10^−7 A/cm^2.The mechanism is that the local hyperthermia induced the free volume expansion of PLGA,and the increase in intermolecular gap enhanced the penetration of electrolytes.Meanwhile,the cytotoxicity study showed that the hybrid coating endowed the Mg-Sr alloy with enhanced biocompatibility.Li Liu Bo Huang Xiangmei Liu Wei Yuan Yufeng Zheng Zhaoyang Li Kelvin Wai Kwok Yeung Shengli Zhu Yanqin Liang Zhenduo Cui Shuilin Wu 2021Bioactive Materials2021,6,2:4
