1Biomaterials for spinal cord repair显示文摘Spinal cord injury (SCi) results in permanent loss of function leading to often devastating personal, economic and social problems. A contributing factor to the permanence of SCi is that damaged axons do not regenerate, which prevents the re-establishment of axonal circuits involved in function. Many groups are working to develop treatments that address the lack of axon regeneration after SCi. The emergence of biomaterials for regeneration and increased collaboration between engineers, basic and translational scientists, and clinicians hold promise for the development of effective therapies for SCi. A plethora of biomaterials is available and has been tested in various models of SCi. Considering the clinical relevance of contusion injuries, we primarily focus on polymers that meet the specific criteria for addressing this type of injury. Biomaterials may provide structural support and/or serve as a delivery vehicle for factors to arrest growth inhibition and promote axonal growth. Designing materials to address the specific needs of the damaged central nervous system is crucial and possible with current technology. Here, we review the most prominent materials, their optimal characteristics, and their potential roles in repairing and regenerating damaged axons following SCi.Agnes E. 2Manipulation of SlMXl for enhanced carotenoids accumulation and drought resistance in tomato显示文摘Plants are the ultimate source of nutrients in the human diet. To ensure adequate availability of high quality food for an increasing world population, traits including improved tolerance of stresses and nutrient levels need to be selected in crops, both individually and in combination. Here we report the identification of Sl MX1 encoding a MIXTA-like MYB transcription factor in tomato that simultaneously modulates drought resistance and metabolic processes through regulating key structural and regulatory genes of the corresponding pathways. Over-expression of Sl MX1 results in substantially increased drought tolerance and improved fruit quality, while knocking down Sl MX1 resulted in the opposite phenotypes. 5Energy and Water Optimization in Biofuel Plants显示文摘In this paper we address the topic of energy and water optimization in the production of bioethanol from corn and switchgrass. We show that in order for these manufacturing processes to be attractive,there is a need to go beyond traditional heat integration and water recycling techniques. Thus,we propose a strategy based on mathe-matical programming techniques to model and optimize the structure of the processes,and perform heat integration including the use of multi-effect distillation columns and integrated water networks to show that the energy effi-ciency and water consumption in bioethanol plants can be significantly improved. Specifically,under some circum-stances energy can even be produced and the water consumption can be reduced below the values required for the production of gasoline.Ignacio E. 6陶瓷球头和金属球头配伍聚乙烯臼杯的20年长期对比磨损研究显示文摘背景关节承载面是假体磨损过程中的重要假体相关因素。目前已知聚乙烯磨损是全髋关节置换术后髋臼和股骨假体组件无菌性松动的主要原因。方法本项前瞻性研究中,共随机挑选了80例同时期患者共93个髋关节接受了非骨水泥髋关节置换术,使用钛涂层的RM臼杯和CLS股骨柄。80例髋关节使用陶瓷球头,13例使用钴铬钼合金球头,所有股骨头直径均为32 mm。所有患者平均年龄为52岁,研究平均随访时间为19.3年。所有患者均获得随访。结果随访时使用EBRA系统对髋臼假体组件的磨损、倾斜和前倾角进行影像学评估。其中55例髋关节进行了磨损率的确认。翻修病例的平均磨损率为0.191 mm年/,而未翻修病例的平均磨损率为0.105 mm年/(P=0.041)。钴铬钼合金组平均磨损率为0.190 mm年/,陶瓷组平均磨损率为0.107 mm年/(P=0.025)。钴铬钼合金组的翻修率(13例中6例)明显高于陶瓷组(80例中11例)。股骨球头磨损率与其材料(P=0.025)、股骨柄周围骨溶解(P=0.003)、臼杯骨溶解(P=0.011)、臼杯翻修(P=0.041)以及臼杯倾斜(P=0.012)呈正性相关。结论本长期研究表明,在20年的时间里,陶瓷股骨头与钴铬钼合金股骨头相比造成的线性磨损更少,从而显著减少骨溶解的发生以及任一假体部件的翻修。Martin Ihle Sabine Mai Werner E.
