| 1 | Methane production and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in children living in a slum显示文摘AIM:To analyze small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in school-aged children and the relationship between hydrogen and methane production in breath tests.METHODS:This transversal study included 85 children residing in a slum and 43 children from a private school,all aged between 6 and 10 years,in Osasco,Brazil.For characterization of the groups,data regarding the socioeconomic status and basic housing sanitary conditions were collected.Anthropometric data was obtained in children from both groups.All children completed the hydrogen(H 2) and methane(CH 4) breath test in order to assess small intestinal bacterial overgrowth(SIBO).SIBO was diagnosed when there was an increase in H 2 ≥ 20 ppm or CH 4 ≥ 10 ppm with regard to the fasting value until 60 min after lactulose ingestion.RESULTS:Children from the slum group had worse living conditions and lower nutritional indices than children from the private school.SIBO was found in 30.9%(26/84) of the children from the slum group and in 2.4%(1/41) from the private school group(P = 0.0007).Greater hydrogen production in the small intestine was observed in children from the slum group when compared to children from the private school(P = 0.007).A higher concentration of hydrogen in the small intestine(P < 0.001) and in the colon(P < 0.001) was observed among the children from the slum group with SIBO when compared to children from the slum group without SIBO.Methane production was observed in 63.1%(53/84) of the children from the slum group and in 19.5%(8/41) of the children from the private school group(P < 0.0001).Methane production was observed in 38/58(65.5%) of the children without SIBO and in 15/26(57.7%) of the children with SIBO from the slum.Colonic production of hydrogen was lower in methaneproducing children(P = 0.017).CONCLUSION:Children who live in inadequate environmental conditions are at risk of bacterial overgrowth and methane production.Hydrogen is a substrate for methane production in the colon. | Carolina Santos Mello Soraia Tahan Lígia Cristina FL Melli Mirian Silva do Carmo Rodrigues Ricardo Martin Pereira de Mello Isabel Cristina Affonso Scaletsky Mauro Batista de Morais | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012，18，41： | 3 |
| 2 | Rheumatoid arthritis: Nuclear medicine state-of-the-art imaging显示文摘Rheumatoid arthritis(RA)is an autoimmune disease,which is associated with systemic and chronic inflammation of the joints,resulting in synovitis and pannus formation.For several decades,the assessment of RA has been limited to conventional radiography,assisting in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease.Nevertheless,conventional radiography has poor sensitivity in the detection of the inflammatory process that happens in the initial stages of RA.In the past years,new drugs that significantly decrease the progression of RA have allowed a more efficient treatment.Nuclear Medicine provides functional assessment of physiological processes and therefore has significant potential for timely diagnosis and adequate follow-up of RA.Several single photon emission computed tomography(SPECT)and positron emission tomography(PET)radiopharmaceuti-cals have been developed and applied in this field.The use of hybrid imaging,which permits computed tomography(CT)and nuclear medicine data to be acquired and fused,has increased even more the diagnostic accuracy of Nuclear Medicine by providing anatomical localization in SPECT/CT and PET/CT studies.More recently,fusion of PET with magnetic resonance imaging(PET/MRI)was introduced in some centers and demonstrated great potential.In this article,we will review studies that have been published using Nuclear Medicine for RA and examine key topics in the area. | Paulo Henrique Rosado-de-Castro Sergio Augusto Lopes de Souza Dangelo Alexandre Lea Mirian Barbosa da Fonseca Bianca Gutfilen | 2014 | World Journal of Orthopedics2014，5，3： | 3 |
| 3 | Rapid acupuncture for musculoskeletal pain in the emergency room of the Hospital Servidor Publico Estadual, Brazil: A quasi-experimental study显示文摘Objective:To compare differences in self-reported musculoskeletal pain before and after receiving rapid acupuncture for pain at an outpatient emergency department.Methods:Exactly 102 patients presenting to the emergency room of the Hospital Servidor Publico Estadual in Sao Paulo,Brazil,participated in this before-and-after study.All participants had musculoskeletal pain and were treated with the technique proposed by Marques Filho.This emergency acupuncture involved inserting a needle at a point defined by traditional Chinese medicine and applying intense stimulation for 10 s;no more than two points were used on any individual patient.Pain was measured using a numerical visual scale before and immediately after the procedure.Results:Participants in this study were mostly women(78%),had a college degree(47%)and were below the age of 60(56%).The most common region of pain was the lower back(31%),and the most common type of pain was acute and exacerbated chronic pain.The meridians most commonly involved were the eight extra meridians(40%),and the points most often used for treatment were Houxi(SI3),Shenmai(BL62)and Zulinqi(GB41).Almost all participants reported a decrease in pain intensity,independent of sex,education level,pain site and pain type(acute/chronic;P<0.05).At the end of the session,only4%of the participants reported a desire for allopathic medication.Conclusion:This emergency acupuncture technique for analgesia appears to reduce musculoskeletal pain.Trial registration:Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials(http://www.ensaiosclinicos.gov.br/)with No.RBR-8 dmfjf. | Luciana Aikawa Alexandre Massao Yoshizumi Mirian Matsura Shirassu Marcia Kiyomi Koike | 2020 | Journal of Integrative Medicine2020，18，4： | 3 |
| 4 | Triiodothyronine and breast cancer显示文摘The thyroid hormones(THs), triiodothyronine(T3) and thyroxine(T4), are essential for survival; they are involved in the processes of development, growth, and metabolism. In addition to hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, THs are involved in other diseases. The role of THs in the development and differentiation of mammary epithelium is well established; however, their specific role in the pathogenesis of breast cancer(BC) is controversial. Steroid hormones affect many human cancers and the abnormal responsiveness of the mammary epithelial cells to estradiol(E2) in particular is known to be an important cause for the development and progression of BC. The proliferative effect of T3 has been demonstrated in various types of cancer. In BC cell lines, T3 may foster the conditions for tumor proliferation and increase the effect of cell proliferation by E2; thus, T3 may play a role in the developmentand progression of BC. Studies show that T3 has effects similar to E2 in BC cell lines.
