| 1 | Ferrostatin-1 protects HT-22 cells from oxidative toxicity显示文摘Ferroptosis is a type of programmed cell death dependent on iron.It is different from other forms of cell death such as apoptosis,classic necrosis and autophagy.Ferroptosis is involved in many neurodegenerative diseases.The role of ferroptosis in glutamate-induced neuronal toxicity is not fully understood.To test its toxicity,glutamate(1.25–20 mM)was applied to HT-22 cells for 12 to 48 hours.The optimal experimental conditions occurred at 12 hours after incubation with 5 mM glutamate.Cells were cultured with 3–12μM ferrostatin-1,an inhibitor of ferroptosis,for 12 hours before exposure to glutamate.The cell viability was detected by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay.Autophagy was determined by monodansylcadaverine staining and apoptosis by caspase 3 activity.Damage to cell structures was observed under light and by transmission electron microscopy.The release of lactate dehydrogenase was detected by the commercial kit.Reactive oxygen species were measured by flow cytometry.Glutathione peroxidase activity,superoxide dismutase activity and malondialdehyde level were detected by the appropriate commercial kit.Prostaglandin peroxidase synthase 2 and glutathione peroxidase 4 gene expression was detected by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction.Glutathione peroxidase 4 and nuclear factor erythroid-derived-like 2 protein expression was detected by western blot analysis.Results showed that ferrostatin-1 can significantly counter the effects of glutamate on HT-22 cells,improving the survival rate,reducing the release of lactate dehydrogenase and reducing the damage to mitochondrial ultrastructure.However,it did not affect the caspase-3 expression and monodansylcadaverine-positive staining in glutamate-injured HT-22 cells.Ferrostatin-1 reduced the levels of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde and enhanced superoxide dismutase activity.It decreased gene expression of prostaglandin peroxidase synthase 2 and increased gene expression of glutathione peroxidase 4 and protein expressions of glutathione peroxidase 4 and nuclear factor(erythroid-derived)-like 2 in glutamate-injured HT-22 cells.Treatment of cultured cells with the apoptosis inhibitor Z-Val-Ala-Asp(OMe)-fluoromethyl ketone(2–8μM),autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine(100–400μM)or necrosis inhibitor necrostatin-1(10–40μM)had no effect on glutamate induced cell damage.However,the iron chelator deferoxamine mesylate salt inhibited glutamate induced cell death.Thus,the results suggested that ferroptosis is caused by glutamate-induced toxicity and that ferrostatin-1 protects HT-22 cells from glutamate-induced oxidative toxicity by inhibiting the oxidative stress. | Jun Chu Chen-Xu Liu Rui Song Qing-Lin Li | 2020 | Neural Regeneration Research2020,15,3: | 16 |

| 3 | Myopia induced by flickering light in guinea pigs: a detailed assessment on susceptibility of different frequencies显示文摘AIM: To investigate the effectiveness and feasibility of inducing myopia in guinea pigs by flickering light (FL) stimulation with different frequencies. METHODS: Seventy 2 -week-old guinea pigs were randomly assigned to six groups: five FL groups and a control group (n =12 for each). Animals in the five FL groups were raised under 500lx illumination with a duty diurnal cycle of 50% at a flash rate of 5, 1, 0.5, 0.25 and 0.1Hz respectively. Those in the control group were reared under steady 250lx illumination. Refraction, axial length, and radius of curvature were measured before and at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks after treatment. At week 12, the eyeballs were taken out and three ocular dimensions and dry weight of sclera were measured. RESULTS: A myopic shift and axial eye length increase developed in the five FL groups. Stimulation at 0.5Hz caused greater changes in myopic shift, axial elongation, eyeball dimension, and dry weight of sclera than stimulation at other frequencies. Compared with controls, eyes in 0.5Hz group were approximately -5.5 ±1.5D more myopic with increase in horizontal, vertical, axial dimensions by 0.89 ±0.3mm, 0.69 ±0.2mm, 1.12 ±0.2mm respectively and with increase in dry weight of sclera by 0.44mg. CONCLUSION: Chronic exposure to periodic illumination at temporal frequency is attended by development of excessive ocular enlargement and myopic refractive error. | 4 | Graphene-based membranes for molecular and ionic separations in aqueous environments显示文摘Graphene-based laminar materials open up to new applications for molecular and ionic separations in aqueous environments due to the atomic thickness, mechanical strength, chemical stability and other fantastic properties.Recent advances on controlling the structure and chemical functionality of graphene-based membranes can potentially lead to new classes of tools for desalination, dehydration, toxicant rejection, specific ionic separation and so on. The recent developments of graphene-based membranes prepared by using a concept to form interlayer space between graphene sheets and creating nanoscale or sub-nanoscale pores in a graphene lattice, together with their mass-transfer mechanisms and potential applications in aqueous environments are reviewed. | 5 | Repeatability and Reproducibility of Quantitative Assessment of the Retinal Microvasculature Using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Based on Optical Microangiography显示文摘Objective The aim of this study was to determine the repeatability and reproducibility of optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA) based on optical microangiography(OMAG) measurements of macular vessels in normal eyes. Methods In this prospective cohort study, 40 eyes of 40 healthy volunteers underwent repeated OCTA(Cirrus HD-OCT 5000 angiography system, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc.) scans on two separate visit days. On each visit day, the eyes were scanned three times. The following parameters were used to quantitatively describe the OCTA images of the superficial vascular network: vessel area density(VAD), vessel skeleton density(VSD), vessel diameter index(VDI), vessel perimeter index(VPI), vessel complexity index(VCI), flux, and foveal avascular zone(FAZ). Coefficient of variation(CV) and intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC) were calculated for evaluating intravisit and intervisit repeatability, as well as interobserver reproducibility. Results The measurements showed high repeatability [CVs ≤ 4.2%(intravisit) and ≤ 4.6%(intervisit)] and interobserver reproducibility(ICCs ≥ 0.923) for all parameters. | 6 | Lead?Free Halide Double Perovskite Materials: A New Superstar Toward Green and Stable Optoelectronic Applications显示文摘Lead-based halide perovskites have emerged as excellent semiconductors for a broad range of optoelectronic applications, such as photovoltaics, lighting, lasing and photon detection. However, toxicity of lead and poor stability still represent significant challenges. Fortunately, halide double perovskite materials with formula of A_2M(I)M(III)X_6 or A_2M(IV)X_6 could be potentially regarded as stable and green alternatives for optoelectronic applications, where two divalent lead ions are substituted by combining one monovalent and one trivalent ions, or one tetravalent ion. Here, the article provides an up-to-date review on the developments of halide double perovskite materials and their related optoelectronic applications including photodetectors, X-ray detectors, photocatalyst, light-emitting diodes and solar cells. The synthesized halide double perovskite materials exhibit exceptional stability, and a few possess superior optoelectronic properties. However, the number of synthesized halide double perovskites is limited, and more limited materials have been developed for optoelectronic applications to date. In addition, the band structures and carrier transport properties of the materials are still not desired, and the films still manifest low quality for photovoltaic applications. | 8 | Examples of unusual ionospheric observations by the CSES prior to earthquakes显示文摘The CSES(China seismic electromagnetic satellite) was launched on February 2, 2018 in a circular polar orbit at an altitude of~507 km. One of the main objectives of CSES is to search for and characterize ionospheric perturbations that can be associated with seismic activities, to better understand the generation mechanism of such perturbations. Its scientific payload can measure a broad frequency range of electromagnetic waves and some important plasma parameters. This paper is a first-hand study of unusual observations recorded by the CSES over seismic regions prior to four earthquakes with M >7.0 since the satellite's launch. CSES detectors measured irregularities near the epicenter of these four earthquakes. | 10 | A Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi plasmid induces rapid and massive apoptosis in infected macrophages显示文摘pRST98 is a chimeric plasmid isolated from Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi(S.typhi)that mediates the functions of drug resistance and virulence.Previously,we reported that Salmonella plasmid virulence(spv)genes were present in S.typhi.In our current study,we investigated whether plasmid pRST98 exhibits significant cytotoxicity in macrophages.pRST98 was transferred into the avirulent Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium(S.typhimurium)strain RIA to create the transconjugant pRST98/RIA.The standard S.typhimurium virulent strain SR-11,which carries a 100-kb virulence plasmid,was used as a positive control.The bacterial strains were incubated with a murine macrophage-like cell line(J774A.1)in vitro.Apoptosis of J774A.1 cells was examined by electron microscopy and flow cytometry after annexin-V/propidium iodide labeling,and the survival of Salmonella strains in J774A.1 cells was determined.Results showed that macrophages infected with strain pRST98/RIA displayed greater levels of apoptosis than those infected with RIA and that pRST98 may increase bacterial survival in macrophages.Further studies showed that the pRST98-induced death of macrophages was associated with the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and that pRST98 may activate caspase-9 and then caspase-3.The research data indicate that the virulence of bacteria that contain the pRST98 plasmid is enhanced;the presence of this plasmid increases the survival of the bacterial pathogen and acts through the mitochondrial pathway to mediate macrophage apoptosis. | Shuyan Wu Yuanyuan Li Yang Xu Qiong Li Yuanyuan Chu Rui Huang Zhenghong Qin | 2010 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2010,7,4: | 6 |

| 14 | Development of a model to generate a risk map in a building fire显示文摘Fire simulations and sensors are widely used in building fires,various data such as temperature,CO and CO2 concentration,visibility can be obtained by sensors and sensor-based simulation. It is important to generate a risk map based on such data so that we can use it to estimate safety of the building. In this paper,we propose a method to generate a dynamical,integrated risk map using sensor readings in a building fire. Such risk evaluation model is developed using similarity comparison between the space state and dangerous state by a likelihood distance calculating and data grouping from a two-step cluster method. The risk evaluation model considers the integrated influence on the occupants in the zone from high temperature,lack of oxygen,toxic and harmful gases and shows the relative fire risk map at certain time. | 15 | An easily recoverable thermo-sensitive polyelectrolyte as draw agent for forward osmosis process显示文摘As a potential solution to the crises of energy and resources, forward osmosis(FO) has been limited by the development of draw agents. An ideal draw agent should be able to generate high osmotic pressure and can be easily recovered. In this study, a thermo-sensitive polyelectrolyte of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid)(PNA)is developed as an efficient draw agent, and two easy and simple methods are proposed to effectively recover the polyelectrolytes. After adjusting the pH value of polyelectrolyte solutions to around 6.0, the polyelectrolyte can generate relatively high osmotic pressure, and induce average water fluxes of 2.09 and 2.95 L·m^(-2)·h^(-1) during12 h FO processes when the polyelectrolyte concentrations are 0.20 and 0.38 g·ml^(-1) respectively. After acidifying and heating to 70 °C, the PNA-10 polyelectrolyte can aggregate together because of hydrophobic association and separate from water, so it can be easily recovered by either simple centrifugation or gravitational sedimentation. The recovery ratios of PNA-10 polyelectrolyte in both methods are as high as 89%, and the recovered polyelectrolytes can be reused with almost the same FO performance as fresh ones. | 19 | Characteristics of coal sludge slurry prepared by a wet-grinding process显示文摘Coal sludge slurry(CSS) is an alternative fuel and a potential competitive method for sludge reduction.Based on the researches of coal water slurry, we studied CSSs by using a wet-grinding process with different types of regional municipal sludge(sludge) in an orthogonal experiment. The sludge type,sludge mixing proportion, dosage of dispersant, and grinding time were tested in this study. The results show that water content and its occurrence characteristics in the sludge have primary hindering influences on slurry ability. The range of fixed-viscosity concentrations with raw wet sludge is from 50.78%to 44.40%(by weight), while the range is from 53.35% to 51.51%(by weight) with dry sludge. All of the CSSs exhibit shear-thinning behaviors with different variation trends, especially the CSSs with more than 15%(by weight) raw wet sludge in it. Adding the same proportion of raw wet sludge increases the thixotropic properties of CSSs and the highest area of thixotropy loop is 3065 Pa/s, while the highest value of dry sludge is 1798 Pa/s.
