| 1 | Evaluation of Doppler-ultrasonography in the diagnosis of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt dysfunction: A prospective study显示文摘AIM To prospectively evaluate the performance of Dopplerultrasonography(US) for the detection of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt(TIPS) dysfunction within a multicenter cohort of cirrhotic patients.METHODS This study was conducted in 10 french teaching hospitals. After TIPS insertion, angiography and liver Doppler-US were carried out every six months to detect dysfunction(defined by a portosystemic gradient ≥ 12 mm Hg and/or a stent stenosis ≥ 50%). The association between ultrasonographic signs and dysfunction was studied by logistic random-effects models, and the diagnostic performance of each Doppler criterion was estimated by the bootstrap method. This study was approved by the ethics committee of Tours.RESULTS Two hundred and eighteen pairs of examinations performed on 87 cirrhotic patients were analyzed. Variables significantly associated with dysfunction were: The speed of flow in the portal vein(P = 0.008), the reversal of flow in the right(P = 0.038) and left(P = 0.049) portal branch, the loss of modulation of portal flow by the right atrium(P = 0.0005), ascites(P = 0.001) and the overall impression of the operator(P = 0.0001). The diagnostic performances of these variables were low; sensitivity was < 58% and negative predictive value was < 73%. Therefore, dysfunction cannot be ruled out from Doppler-US. CONCLUSION The performance of Doppler-US for the detection of TIPS dysfunction is poor compared to angiography. | 2 | Simulation and Visualisation of Functional Landscapes:Effects of the Water Resource Competition Between Plants显示文摘Vegetation ecosystem simulation and visualisation are challenging topics involving multidisciplinary aspects. In this paper,we present a new generic frame for the simulation of natural phenomena through manageable and interacting models.It focuses on the functional growth of large vegetal ecosystems,showing coherence for scales ranging from the individual plant to communities and with a particular attention to the effects of water resource competition between plants.The proposed approach is based on a model of plant growth in interaction with the environmental conditions. These are deduced from the climatic data (light,temperature,rainfall) and a model of soil hydrological budget.A set of layers is used to store the water resources and to build the interfaces between the environmental data and landscape components:temperature,rain,light,altitude,lakes,plant positions,biomass,cycles,etc.At the plant level,the simulation is performed for each individual by a structural-functional growth model,interacting with the plant's environment.Temperature is spatialised,changing according to altitude,and thus locally controls plant growth speed.The competition for water is based on a soil hydrological model taking into account rainfalls,water runoff, absorption,diffusion,percolation in soil.So far,the incoming light radiation is not studied in detail and is supposed constant.However,competition for light between plants is directly taken into account in the plant growth model.In our implementation,we propose a simple architecture for such a simulator and a simulation scheme to synchronise the water resource updating (on a temporal basis) and the plant growth cycles (determined by the sum of daily temperatures). | 4 | Controlling the gelation temperature of biomimetic polyisocyanides显示文摘Thermosensitive polymers show an entropy-driven transition from a well-solvated to a poorly solvated polymer chain, resulting in a more compact globular conformation. The transition at the lower critical solution temperature(LCST) is often sharp, which allows for a wide range of smart material applications.At the LCST, oligo(ethylene glycol)-substituted polyisocyanides(PICs) form soft hydrogels, composed of polymer bundles similar to biological gels, such as actin, fibrin and intermediate filaments. Here, we show that the LCST of PICs strongly depends linearly on the length of the ethylene glycol(EG) tails; every EG group increases the LCSTand thus the gelation temperature by nearly 30 ℃. Using a copolymerisation approach, we demonstrate that we can precisely tailor the gelation temperature between 10 ℃ and 60 ℃and, consequently, tune the mechanical properties of the PIC gels. | Paul H.J. | 20 | Out-of-plane (SH) soil-structure interaction: a shear wall with rigid and flexible ring foundation显示文摘Soil-structure interaction(SSI) of a building and shear wall above a foundation in an elastic half-space has long been an important research subject for earthquake engineers and strong-motion seismologists.Numerous papers have been published since the early 1970s;however,very few of these papers have analytic closed-form solutions available.The soil-structure interaction problem is one of the most classic problems connecting the two disciplines of earthquake engineering and civil engineering.The interaction effect represents the mechanism of energy transfer and dissipation among the elements of the dynamic system,namely the soil subgrade.foundation,and superstructure.This interaction effect is important across many structure,foundation,and subgrade types but is most pronounced when a rigid.superstructure is founded on a relatively soft lower foundation and subgrade.This effect may only be ignored when the subgrade is much harder than a flexible superstructure:for instance a flexible moment frame superstructure founded on a thin compacted soil layer on top of very stiff bedrock below.This paper will study the interaction effect of the subgrade and the superstructure.The analytical solution of the interaction of a shear wall,flexible-rigid foundation,and an elastic halfspace is derived for incident SH waves with various angles of incidence.It found that the flexible ring(soft layer)cannot be used as an isolation mechanism to decouple a superstructure from its substructure resting on a shaking half-space. | Thang Le Vincent W.
