| 1 | Differing coping mechanisms, stress level and anorectal physiology in patients with functional constipation显示文摘AIM: To investigate coping mechanisms, constipation symptoms and anorectal physiology in 80 constipated subjects and 18 controls.METHODS: Constipation was diagnosed by Rome Ⅱ criteria.Coping ability and anxiety/depression were assessed by validated questionnaires. Transit time and balloon distension test were performed.RESULTS: 34.5% patients were classified as slow transit type of constipation. The total colonic transit time (56 h vs 10 h, P<0.0001) and rectal sensation including urge sensation (79 mL vs 63 mL, P = 0.019) and maximum tolerable volume (110 mL vs95 mL, P = 0.03) differed in patients and controls. Constipated subjects had significantly higher anxiety and depression scores and lower SF-36 scores in all categories. They also demonstrated higher scores of'monitoring' coping strategy (14+6 vs9+3, P = 0.001),which correlated with the rectal distension sensation (P = 0.005), urge sensation (P=0.002), and maximum tolerable volume (P = 0.035). | 3 | Increasing prevalence of advanced colonic polyps in young patients undergoing colonoscopy in a referral academic hospital in Hong Kong显示文摘AIM: To investigate the distribution and frequency of advanced polyps over eight years. METHODS: 6424 colonoscopies were reviewed during the study period 1998 to 2005. The study period was subdivided into period Ⅰ: 1998 to 2001 and period Ⅱ: 2002-2005. RESULTS: 1856 polyps (33% advanced polyps) and 328 CRCs were detected. The mean ages of the patients with advanced polyps and cancer were 69.2 ± 12.0 and 71.6 ± 13.8 years, respectively. Advanced polyps were mainly left sided (59.5%). Advanced polyps were found in patients ≤ 60 years from 17.7% in periodⅠto 26.3% in period Ⅱ (P < 0.05), especially in male subjects ≤ 60 years (21.6% vs 31.6%, P < 0.05). Advanced tubulovillous polyps rose from 21.5% in period Ⅰto 29.5% in period Ⅱ (P < 0.05). Whereas cancers in male patients ≤ 60 years were similar in both periods: 23.2% vs 16.5% (P > 0.05). | 7 | Prey decline leads to diet shift in the largest population of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins?显示文摘The Pearl River Delta(PRD)region on the southeast coast of China has long been known as a highly productive fishing ground.Since the late 1980s,fishing pressure in the PRD has been intense,which warrants concerns of potential fishery-related impacts on the food resources and foraging ecology of apex marine predators in this region,such as the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin(Sousa chinensis).In this study,we examined 54 stomachs with food remains,collected from beached carcasses of humpback dolphins recovered during fifteen years between 2003 and 2017.The 6043 identified prey items represent 62 teleost taxa,primarily small estuarine fish,but also larger reef fish.The dolphins appear to be opportunistic foragers,hunting across the water-column,with preference for shoaling and meaty fishes(e.g.Collichthys lucidus IRI%=38.6%,Johnius belangerii IRI%=23.1%,Mugil cephalus IRI%=14.0%).Our findings suggest a dietary shift in recent years,from primarily demersal(as previously reported)to greater intake of neritic and pelagic fish.Dolphin foraging group size has decreased in recent years,which corresponds with declining size and numbers of prey items retrieved from dolphin stomachs.We suggest that these are indicators of declining food resources.Faced with a shortage of preferred prey,humpback dolphins may have broadened their dietary spectrum to maintain their daily energy intake,while their foraging group size decreased in response to the altered tradeoff between the costs and benefits of group foraging. | Wenzhi LIN Leszek KARCZMARSKI Ruilian ZHOU Yaqian MO Lang GUO Sam King Fung YIU Xi NING Tak-Cheung WAI Yuping WU | 2021 | Integrative Zoology2021,16,4: | 0 |
