1On the tuning of electrical and thermal transport in thermoelectrics: an integrated theory–experiment perspective显示文摘During the last two decades,we have witnessed great progress in research on thermoelectrics.There are two primary focuses.One is the fundamental understanding of electrical and thermal transport,enabled by the interplay of theory and experiment;the other is the substantial enhancement of the performance of various thermoelectric materials,through synergistic optimisation of those intercorrelated transport parameters.Here we review some of the successful strategies for tuning electrical and thermal transport.For electrical transport,we start from the classical but still very active strategy of tuning band degeneracy(or band convergence),then discuss the engineering of carrier scattering,and finally address the concept of conduction channels and conductive networks that emerge in complex thermoelectric materials.For thermal transport,we summarise the approaches for studying thermal transport based on phonon–phonon interactions valid for conventional solids,as well as some quantitative efforts for nanostructures.We also discuss the thermal transport in complex materials with chemical-bond hierarchy,in which a portion of the atoms(or subunits)are weakly bonded to the rest of the structure,leading to an intrinsic manifestation of part-crystalline part-liquid state at elevated temperatures.In this review,we provide a summary of achievements made in recent studies of thermoelectric transport properties,and demonstrate how they have led to improvements in thermoelectric performance by the integration of modern theory and experiment,and point out some challenges and possible directions.Jiong Yang Lili Xi Wujie Qiu Lihua Wu Xun Shi Lidong Chen Jihui Yang Wenqing Zhang Ctirad Uher David J Singh 2016npj Computational Materials2016,,1:24
2A randomized controlled trial of laparoscopic versus open cholecystectomy in patients with cirrhotic portal hypertension显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the characters, risks and benefits of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) in cirrhotic portal hypertension (CPH) patients.METHODS: Altogether 80 patients with symptomatic gallbladder disease and CPH, including 41 Child class A,32 Child class B and 7 Child class C, were randomly divided into open cholecystectomy (OC) group (38 patients) and LC group (42 patients). The cohorts were well-matched for number, age, sex, Child classification and types of disease.Data of the two groups were collected and analyzed.RESULTS: In LC group, LC was successfully performed in 36 cases, and 2 patients were converted to OC for difficulty in managing bleeding under laparoscope and dense adhesion of Calot's triangle. The rate of conversion was 5.3%. The surgical duration was 62.6±15.2 min. The operative blood loss was 75.5±15.5 mL. The time to resume diet was 18.3±6.5 h. Seven postoperative complications occurred in five patients (13.2%). All patients were dismissed after an average of 4.6±2.4 d. In OC group, the operation time was 60.5±17.5 min. The operative blood loss was 112.5±23.5 mL. The time to resume diet was 44.2±10.5 h.Fifteen postoperative complications occurred in 12patients (30.0%). All patients were dismissed after an average of 7.5±3.5 d. There was no significant difference in operation time between OC and LC group. 3Landslide Developmental Characteristics and Response to Climate Change since the Last Glacial in the Upper Reaches of the Yellow River, NE Tibetan Plateau显示文摘The upper reaches of the Yellow River in northeastern Tibetan Plateau are geohazards areas. The evolution of the Yellow River, chronology of some landslides, and spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of super large scale and giant landslides within the region are summarized using paleoclimate evidence, and the relationship between the intensive landslide period and climatic changes since the Last Glacial period is analyzed. It is concluded that(1) Super large scale and giant landslides are distributed widely within the region, particularly in the Qunke-Jianzha basin.(2) The chronological sequence of landslides is established by dating the slip zones of landslides and analyzing the relations between landslides and their overlying or underlying loess formations. Five landslide development periods are determined: 53–49 ka BP, 33–24 ka BP, 10–8 ka BP, 5–3.5 ka BP, and the present.(3) These correspond closely to warm and wet periods during the last 100,000 years, i.e., two weak paleosol development stages of Malan loess deposited during the last Glacial period in the Chinese loess Plateau, L1-4 and L1-2 that belong to the marine oxygen isotope stage 3, the last deglacial period, the Holocene Optimum, and the modern global warming period.(4) Landslide triggers may be closely linked to warm and wet periods related to rapid climatic transitions.YIN Zhiqiang QIN Xiaoguang YIN Yueping ZHAO Wuji WEI Gang 2014Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2014,88,2:16
4Role of preoperative selective portal vein embolization in two-step curative hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM: To determine the feasibility and role of ultrasoundguided preoperative selective portal vein embolization (POSPVE) in the two-step hepatectomy of patients with advanced primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).METHODS: Fifty patients with advanced HCC who were not suitable for curative hepatectomy were treated by ultrasound-guided percutaneous transhepatic POSPVE with fine needles. The successful rate, side effects and complications of POSPVE, changes of hepatic lobe volume and two-step curative hepatectomy rate after POSPVE were observed.RESULTS: POSPVE was successfully performed in 47(94.0 %) patients. In patients whose right portal vein branches were embolized, their right hepatic volume decreased and left hepatic volume increased gradually. The ratio of right hepatic volume to total hepatic volume decreased from 62.4 % before POSPVE to 60.5 %, 57.2 %and 52.8 % after 1, 2 and 3 weeks respectively. The side effects included different degree of pain in liver area (38cases), slight fever (27 cases), nausea and vomiting (9cases). The level of aspartate alanine transaminase (AST),alanine transaminase (ALT) and total bilirubin (TBIL)increased after POSPVE, but returned to preoperative level in 1 week. After 2-4 weeks, two-step curative hepatectomy for HCC was successfully performed on 23 (52.3 %) patients.There were no such severe complications as ectopic embolization, local hemorrhage and bile leakage.CONCLUSION: Ultrasound-guided percutaneous transhepatic POSPVE with fine needles is feasible and safe. 5Adsorption-energy-based activity descriptors for electrocatalysts in energy storage applications显示文摘Energy storage technologies, such as fuel cells, ammonia production and lithium–air batteries, are important strategies for addressing the global challenge of energy crisis and environmental pollution.Taking overpotential as a direct criterion, we illustrate in theory and experiment that the adsorption energies of charged species such as Li^++e^-and H^++e^-are a central parameter to describe catalytic activities related to electricity-in/electricity-out efficiencies. The essence of catalytic activity is revealed to relate with electronic coupling between catalysts and charged species. Based on adsorption energy, some activity descriptors such as d-band center, e_g-electron number and charge-transfer capacity are further defined by electronic properties of catalysts that directly affect interaction between catalysts and charged species. 6Distribution Characteristics of Geohazards Induced by the Lushan Earthquake and Their Comparisons with the Wenchuan Earthquake显示文摘The Lushan Earthquake induced a large number of geohazards. They are widely distributed and caused serious damages. The basic characteristics, formation mechanisms and typical cases of geohazards induced by Lushan Earthquake are described, and compares to the relationships of Lushan and Wenchuan earthquakes between geohazards and earthquake magnitude, geomorphology, slope angle, elevation and seismic intensity in the most affected areas in the article.(1) The numbers and volumes of landslides and rockslides differ significantly between the two earthquakes due to their differing magnitudes. The Lushan Earthquake is associated with fewer and smaller-magnitude geohazards, within the immediate area, which mainly consist of small-and medium-sized shallow landslides and rockslides, and occur on steep slopes and mountain valleys. The largest landslide induced by Lushan Earthquake is the Gangoutou Landslide debris flow with a residual volume of about 2.48×106 m3. The most dangerous debris flow is at Lengmugou gulley in Baoxing County, which has similar geomorphological features and disaster modes as a previous disaster in Zhouqu County, Gansu Province.(2) Geohazards induced by the Lushan Earthquake show four mechanisms: cracking-rockslides-collision- scraping and then debris flows, cracking-rockslides, vibration-rainfall-rockslides-landslide and then debris flow, vibration-throwing or scrolling.(3) There are significant similarities and differences between the geohazards induced by these two earthquakes. The types of geohazards are the same but the volume, quantity and other factors differ: geohazards are concentrated on slope angles of 10°–40° in the Lushan Earthquake area, especially within 10°–20°, and at absolute elevation of 500–2000 m above sea level(a.s.l.). 7Molecular characterization and m RNA expression of ribosomal protein L8 in Rana nigromaculata during development and under exposure to hormones显示文摘Like Xenopus laevis, some species of the Rana genus are also used to study endocrine disrupting chemicals(EDCs). Although ribosomal protein L8(rpl8) is the most-used reference gene for analyzing gene expression by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction in Rana, its suitability as the reference gene has never been validated in any species of the Rana genus. We characterized rpl8 c DNA in Rana nigromaculata, a promising native species in East Asia for assaying endocrine disrupting effects. We found that the rpl8 c DNA consisted of919 bp and encoded 257 amino acids, exhibiting high identities of amino acid sequence with known rpl8 in other Rana species. Then, we examined the stability of m RNA expression during development. Compared with elongation factor 1 alpha 1, another common housekeeping gene, neither stage-specific nor tissue-specific expression of the rpl8 gene was found in all tissues examined(brain, liver, intestine, tail, testis and ovary) during R. nigromaculata development. Finally, we investigated rpl8 expression under exposure to hormones. 9Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) in blood from children (age 9–12) in Taizhou, China显示文摘Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) as ubiquitous persistent organic pollutants have attracted much attention in recent years. Exposure to PBDEs could induce a high health risk for children. The aim of this study was to investigate the PBDEs exposure of children (9–12 years) from Taizhou, China. Fifty-eight blood samples were collected in one school in a mountainous area in Taizhou. The concentrations of ∑9PBDEs (sum of BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -154, -183, -197 and -209) ranged from 2.66 to 33.9 ng/g lipid wet (lw) with a median of 7.22 ng/g lw. These concentrations were lower than those of children in USA, but close to European and Asian general population levels. The results showed that children in Taizhou countryside were at a low level of PBDEs exposure. The predominant congener was BDE-209, followed by BDE-28, -47, -197 and -153. 10Characterization of Nanocrystallizatin Surface Layer of 0.4C-1Cr Low Alloy Steel Prepared by Ultrasonic Particulate Peening显示文摘A nanostructured surface layer was fabricated in a quenched and tempered 0.4C-lCr low alloy steel by ultrasonic particulate peening technique. The microstructure of the nanocrystalline surface layer was characterized by means of TEM and Mossbauer spectroscopy. 11Coarse-graining auto-encoders for molecular dynamics显示文摘Molecular dynamics simulations provide theoretical insight into the microscopic behavior of condensed-phase materials and,as a predictive tool,enable computational design of new compounds.However,because of the large spatial and temporal scales of thermodynamic and kinetic phenomena in materials,atomistic simulations are often computationally infeasible.Coarse-graining methods allow larger systems to be simulated by reducing their dimensionality,propagating longer timesteps,and averaging out fast motions.Coarse-graining involves two coupled learning problems:defining the mapping from an all-atom representation to a reduced representation,and parameterizing a Hamiltonian over coarse-grained coordinates.We propose a generative modeling framework based on variational auto-encoders to unify the tasks of learning discrete coarse-grained variables,decoding back to atomistic detail,and parameterizing coarse-grained force fields.The framework is tested on a number of model systems including single molecules and bulk-phase periodic simulations.Wujie Wang Rafael Gómez-Bombarelli 2019npj Computational Materials2019,,1:3
12Molecular characterization and developmental expression patterns of thyroid hormone receptors(TRs) and their responsiveness to TR agonist and antagonist in Rana nigromaculata显示文摘Considering some advantages of Rana nigromaculata as an experimental species, we propose that this species, like Xenopus laevis, could be used to assay thyroid hormone(TH) signaling disrupting actions. To validate the utilizability of R. nigromaculata, we investigated the responsiveness of R. nigromaculata to a TH receptor(TR) agonist(T3) and antagonist(amiodarone) by analyzing expression, based on characterizing TR cDNA and developmental expression patterns. With high levels of identity with the corresponding genes in X. laevis, both TRα and TRβ in R. nigromaculata exhibited roughly similar developmental expression patterns to those of X. laevis, in spite of some species-specific differences. Both TRα and TRβ expression had greater changes in the liver and intestine than in the tail and brain during metamorphosis. T3 exposure for 2 days induced more dramatic increases of TRβ expression in stage 27 than in stage34 tadpoles but not in stage 42 tadpoles, showing that the responsiveness of R. nigromaculata to TH decreased with development and disappeared at the onset of metamorphic climax.Corresponding to greater changes of TRβ expression in the liver and intestine than in the tail and brain during metamorphosis, the liver and intestine had higher responsiveness to exogenous T3 than the tail and brain. Amiodarone inhibited T3-induced TRβ expression. 14NEW VISUAL PERCEPTUAL POOLING STRATEGY FOR IMAGE QUALITY ASSESSMENT显示文摘Most of Image Quality Assessment (IQA) metrics consist of two processes. In the first process, quality map of image is measured locally. In the second process, the last quality score is converted from the quality map by using the pooling strategy. The first process had been made effective and significant progresses, while the second process was always done in simple ways. In the second process of the pooling strategy, the optimal perceptual pooling weights should be determined and computed according to Human Visual System (HVS). Thus, a reliable spatial pooling mathematical model based on HVS is an important issue worthy of study. In this paper, a new Visual Perceptual Pooling Strategy (VPPS) for IQA is presented based on contrast sensitivity and luminance sensitivity of HVS. Experimental results with the LIVE database show that the visual perceptual weights, obtained by the proposed pooling strategy, can effectively and significantly improve the performances of the IQA metrics with Mean Structural SIMilarity (MSSIM) or Phase Quantization Code (PQC). 15Experimental research and statistical analysis on the dielectric properties of lunar soil simulators显示文摘To support the microwave brightness data re- trieval of future China space-borne lunar exploration mi- crowave radiometer, based on the collection of plentiful ter- restrial basalts and anorthosites and their chemical composi- tions got by X-ray fluorescence, nine lunar soil simulators were prepared and made respectively into 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 g/cm3 five densities each. We measured their relative dielectric constants over the range of 0.5?20 GHz with open-ended coaxial line model on the HP8722C Network Analyzer and then processed and analyzed the measurement data. This study shows that among the three parameters of density, frequency and composition, density has the strongest effect on the relative dielectric constants, frequency comes second, composition the least. The three parameters account for 45%, 33% and 22% respectively of the changed real part of a relative dielectric constant, and 55%, 27% and 19% respectively of the changed imaginary part. The real parts of the relative dielectric constants are linearly linearly corre- lated with density or frequency, and the imaginary parts have a linear relation with both approximately over the range of 0.5?10 GHz and tend to be poorly correlated with them in 10?20 GHz. The effect of composition on a relative dielectric constant seems very complicated, both probably do not follow a simple function relation, with the least correla- tion. Multiple regression analysis indicates that major ele- ment oxides SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, MgO, TiO2 and ?Fe are cor- respondent to a one-order polynomial, and TiO2 or ?Fe or TiO2+?Fe has not been proven to be the indicators in the contribution to the relative dielectric constants.LIDihui JIANGJingshan WUJi ZHANGDehai ZHANGXiaohui 2005Chinese Science Bulletin2005,50,10:2
16Formation Mechanisms and Geomorphic Evolution of the Erlian Mudflow Fans, Eastern Guide Basin of the Upper Reaches of Yellow River显示文摘Several argillaceous platforms lie along the Yellow River(YR) of the eastern Guide Basin, northeastern Tibetan Plateau, and their compositions, formation processes, and geomorphic evolution remain debated. Using field survey data, sample testing, and high-resolution remote sensing images, the evolution of the Erlian mudflow fans are analyzed. The data show significant differences between fans on either side of the YR. On the right bank, fans are dilute debris flows consisting of sand and gravel. On the left bank, fans are viscosity mudflows consisting of red clay. The composition and formation processes of the left bank platforms indicate a rainfall-induced pluvial landscape. Fan evolution can be divided into two stages: early-stage fans pre-date 16 ka B.P., and formed during the last deglaciation; late-stage fans post-date 8 ka B.P.. Both stages were induced by climate change. The data indicate that during the Last Glacial Maximum, the northeastern Tibetan Plateau experienced a cold and humid climate characterized by high rainfall. From 16–8 ka, the YR cut through the Erlian early mudflow fan, resulting in extensive erosion. 19Envelope protection for aircraft encountering upset condition based on dynamic envelope enlargement显示文摘Upset condition encountered by an aircraft in flight could pose great threat to flight safety, which is of chief importance in civil aviation. The causal factors have the nonlinear and multiple characteristics, and as a result the conventional envelope protection system cannot successfully do with the condition. So dynamic envelope based on differential manifold theory, which can take more coupling factors into account, is proposed as a basis to design a novel envelope protection system. Then the relationship between the dynamic envelope and the control coefficient or pilot command is obtained, and the result shows that the dynamic envelope can be enlarged with the change of control coefficient. Furthermore, quantification of flight security is realized via defining relative distance between flight state and dynamic envelope, which can detect whether there is a risk for an aircraft in flight. Finally, an envelope protection system based on dynamic envelope enlargement is proposed on the basis. NASA's Generic Transport Model encountering hazard gust wind in climbing phase is taken as an example to verify the system's feasibility.
