| 1 | Advances in the understanding of inter-subspecific hybrid sterility and wide-compatibility in rice显示文摘Hybrid sterility is a major form of postzygotic reproductive isolation and frequently occurs in hybrids between divergent populations, such as the indica and japonica subspecies of Asian cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.). It has been a major barrier for utilization of the strong heterosis expressed in hybrids between indica and japonica. A large number of loci for rice inter-subspecific hybrid sterility have been identified by genetic analysis. Cytological studies revealed that male and female gamete abortions and reduced affinity between the uniting gametes all occurred in indica-japonica hybrids, suggesting the complexity of the causes for inter-subspecific hybrid sterility. Two genes conditioning embryo-sac and pollen sterility respectively in indica-japonica hybrids have been cloned recently, providing opportunities for molecular characterization of the indica-japonica hybrid sterility and wide-compatibility. | 3 | The molecular and evolutionary basis of reproductive isolation in plants显示文摘Reproductive isolation is defined as processes that prevent individuals of different populations from mating, survival or producing fertile offspring. Reproductive isolation is critical for driving speciation and maintaining species identity, which has been a fundamental concern in evolutionary biology. In plants,reproductive isolation can be divided into prezygotic and postzygotic reproductive barriers, according to its occurrence at different developmental stages. Postzygotic reproductive isolation caused by reduced fitness in hybrids is frequently observed in plants, which hinders gene flow between divergent populations and has substantial effects on genetic differentiation and speciation, and thus is a major obstacle for utilization of heterosis in hybrid crops. During the past decade, China has made tremendous progress in molecular and evolutionary basis of prezygotic and postzygotic reproductive barriers in plants. Present understandings in reproductive isolation especially with new data in the last several years well support three evolutionary genetic models, which represent a general mechanism underlying genomic differentiation and speciation. | 7 | Artificial Selection in Domestication and Breeding Prevents Speciation in Rice显示文摘Speciation has long been regarded as an irreversible process once the reproductive barriers had been established.However,unlike in natural populations,artificial selection might either accelerate or prevent speciation processes in domesticated species.Asian cultivated rice is a target crop for both domestication and artificial breeding;it contains two subspecies of indica and japonica,which usually produce sterile inter-subspecific hybrids due to reproductive barriers.In this study,we constructed the evolutionary trajectory of a reproductive isolation system S5,which regulates fertility in indica-japonica hybrids via three adjacent genes,based on the data of 606 accessions including two cultivated and 11 wild rice species.Although hybrid sterility haplotypes at S5 lead to establishment of a killer-protector reproductive barrier,origin of wide-compatibility haplotypes by complex hybridization and recombination provides an opposing force to reproductive isolation and thus prevents speciation during domestication.Analysis in a diallel set of 209 crosses involving 21 parents showed that the wide-compatibility genotypes largely rescued fertility of indica-japonica hybrids,indicating that the wide-compatibility gene would enable gene flow to maintain species coherence.This counteracting system indicates that combined effects of natural evolution and artificial selection may result in reversible processes of speciation in rice,which may also have implications for genetic improvement of rice. | Jiaming Mi Guangwei Li Conghao Xu Jiangyi Yang Huihui Yu Gongwei Wang Xianghua Li Jinghua Xiao Huazhi Song Qifa Zhang Yidan Ouyang | 2020 | Molecular Plant2020,13,4: | 6 |

| 9 | Facile one-step synthesis of graphitic carbon nitride-modified biochar for the removal of reactive red 120 through adsorption and photocatalytic degradation显示文摘Converting waste biomass into value-added biochar has been considered as a green and sustainable strategy for resource management and pollution control.In this study,graphitic carbon nitride(g-C_(3)N_(4))modified biochars(BCs)were produced through one-pot pyrolysis of urea and hickory chips in differential ratios at 520℃.The resulting BC/g-C_(3)N_(4)composites were evaluated in laboratory for their physicochemical,adsorptive,and photocatalytic properties.The characterization tests showed the successful synthesis of the BC/g-C_(3)N_(4)composites that introduced g-C_(3)N_(4)structure,N-containing surface func-tional groups,reduced surface area,and better thermal stability to the biochar.After modification,the BC/g-C_(3)N_(4)composites showed better adsorption ability to reactive red 120(RR120)than the pristine BC,due to the strong electrostatic attrition between N-containing functional groups of g-C_(3)N_(4)on biochar surface and anionic RR120.The BC/g-C_(3)N_(4)composites also inherited g-C_(3)N_(4)’s photocatalytic activity,which is visible light responsive to generate free radicals for RR120 degradation.In addition,the composites with higher urea modification ratios were more effective in the degradation of RR120.Overall,this study demonstrates the feasibility and promising potential of combining biochar and photocatalyst for the removal of aqueous dye.Because of the synergistic adsorption and photodegradation ability,BC/g-C_(3)N_(4)composites present a novel and cost-effective solution for the removal of aqueous dye and other photodegradable contaminants under natural conditions. | Yulin Zheng Yichen Yang Yue Zhang Weixin Zou Yidan Luo Lin Dong Bin Gao | 2019 | Biochar2019,1,1: | 5 |

| 11 | Homogeneous label-free fluorescent assay of small molecule-protein interactions using protein binding-inhibited transcription nanomachine显示文摘Quantitative analysis of interactions between small molecules and proteins is a central challenge in chemical genetics, molecular diagnostics and drug developments. Here, we developed a RNA transcription nanomachine by assembling T7 RNA polymerase on a small molecule-labeled DNA heteroduplex. The nanomachine, of which the RNA transcription activity can be quantitatively inhibited by protein binding, showed a great potential for small molecule-protein interaction assay. This finding enabled us to develop a novel homogeneous label-free strategy for assays of interactions between small molecules and their protein receptors. Three small molecule compounds and their protein receptors have been used to demonstrate the developed strategy. The results revealed that the protein-small molecule interaction assay strategy shows dynamic responses in the concentration range from 0.5 to 64 nM with a detection limit of 0.2 nM. | 14 | Genome-wide dissection of segregation distortion using multiple inter-subspecific crosses in rice显示文摘Mendelian inheritance can ensure equal segregation of alleles from parents to offspring, which provides fundamental basis for genetics and molecular biology. Segregation distortion(SD) leads to preferential transmission of certain alleles from generation to generation. Such violation of Mendelian genetic principle is often accompanied by reproductive isolation and eventually speciation. Although SD is observed in a wide range of species from plants to animals, genome-wide dissection of such biased transmission of gametes is rare. Using nine inter-subspecific rice crosses, a genome-wide screen for SD loci is performed, which reveals 61 single-locus quantitative trait loci and 194 digenic interactions showing distorted transmission ratio, among which 24 new SD loci are identified. Biased transmission of alleles is observed in all nine crosses, suggesting that SD exists extensively in rice populations. 72.13% distorted regions are repeatedly detected in multiple populations, and the most prevalent SD hotspot that observed in eight populations is mapped to chromosome 3. Xian alleles are transmitted at higher frequencies than geng alleles in inter-subspecific crosses, which change the genetic composition of the rice populations. Epistatic interaction contributes significantly to the deviation of Mendelian segregation at the whole-genome level in rice, which is distinct from that in animals. | 15 | Application of pegylated recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor(PEG-rhG-CSF) for the prevention of neutropenia in triple negative breast cancer patients older than 65 years during adjuvant chemotherapy显示文摘Objective The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of pegylated recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor(PEG-rhG-CSF)and recombinant human granulocyte colonystimulating factor(rhG-CSF)for the prevention of neutropenia in elderly breast cancer patients during adjuvant chemotherapy.Methods A total of 45 oncology inpatients with breast cancer,who received adjuvant chemotherapy and were older than 65 years from May 2017 to October 2018 in the General Hospital of the Northern Theater of the Chinese people’s Liberation Army,were included.Epirubivin Cyclophoshamide-Docetaxel(EC-T)sequential adjuvant chemotherapy was chosen.Forty-five patients were randomly divided into two groups;25 patients in the treatment group were treated with PEG-rhG-CSF and 20 patients in the control group were not treated with PEG-rhG-CSF,but only rhG-CSF.The experimental group was treated with the PEG-rhG-CSF at the end of chemotherapy for 24–48 h,with a 6 mg subcutaneous injection once per chemotherapy cycle.In the control group,rhG-CSF was administered after 48 h of chemotherapy,with a 100μg subcutaneous injection,1/d,d 1–7.The dosage could be increased step by step with the exacerbation of neutropenia.The primary aims of this study was to discover the incidence of leukopenia,neutropenia,neutrophilic fever,and adverse reactions in the two groups.Results The incidence of neutropenia,neutrophilic fever and adverse reactions decreased in the treatment group compared to the control group,but no significant difference existed between two groups(P>0.05).Patients in treatment group had a lower,but not statistically significant,incidence of adverse reactions(P>0.05).Conclusion Applying PEG-rhG-CSF could be effective in preventing neutropenia in elderly patients with postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy to treat breast cancer.It may effectively control the occurrence of neutropenia after chemotherapy and reduce the chance of infection.The incidence of side effects,such as fever and bone pain,was low.The adverse drug reactions were well tolerated by patients,which could ensure the smooth progress of chemotherapy. | Shuxian Qu Jianing Qiu Yidan Zhang Yongming Liu Zhendong Zheng | 2019 | Oncology and Translational Medicine2019,5,5: | 3 |

The asobtained Au NR@PAA/Ca P yolk–shell NPs possess ultrahigh doxorubicin(DOX) loading capability(1 mg DOX/mg NPs), superior photothermal conversion property(26%)and p H/near-infrared(NIR) dual-responsive drug delivery performance. The released DOX continuously increased due to the damage of the Ca P shell at low p H values. When the DOX-loaded Au NR@PAA/Ca P yolk–shell NPs wereexposed to NIR irradiation, a burst-like drug release occurs owing to the heat produced by the Au NRs. Furthermore,Au NR@PAA/Ca P yolk–shell NPs are successfully employed for synergic dual-mode X-ray computed tomography/photoacoustic imaging and chemo-photothermal cancer therapy. | 19 | Understanding the genetic and molecular constitutions of heterosis for developing hybrid rice显示文摘The wide adoption of hybrid rice has greatly increased rice yield in the last several decades.The utilization of heterosis facilitated by male sterility has been a common strategy for hybrid rice development.Here,we summarize our efforts in the genetic and molecular understanding of heterosis and male sterility together with the related progress from other research groups.Analyses of F1 diallel crosses show that strong heterosis widely exists in hybrids of diverse germplasms,and inter-subspecific hybrids often display higher heterosis.Using the elite hybrid Shanyou 63 as a model,an immortalized F2 population design is conducted for systematic characterization of the biological mechanism of heterosis,with identification of loci controlling heterosis of yield and yield component traits.Dominance,overdominance,and epistasis all play important roles in the genetic basis of heterosis;quantitative assessment of these components well addressed the three classical genetic hypotheses for heterosis.Environment-sensitive genic male sterility(EGMS)enables the development of two-line hybrids,and long noncoding RNAs often function as regulators of EGMS.Inter-subspecific hybrids show greatly reduced fertility;the identification and molecular characterization of hybrid sterility genes offer strategies for overcoming inter-subspecific hybrid sterility.These developments have significant implications for future hybrid rice improvement using genomic breeding. | Yidan Ouyang Xu Li Qifa Zhang | 2022 | Journal of Genetics and Genomics2022,49,5: | 2 |
| 20 | “Street Portraits” of Old City Streets in the New Data Environment: A Case Study on the Old City of Beijing显示文摘As China's economic development turns into the 'New Normal,' the focus of urban development and construction have transformed from 'physical expansion' to 'built-up area improvement.' Street, as the most fundamental component of public space, is of great significance to be interpreted and studied. This study attempts to quantify all the composing elements in urban streets to create 'Street Portraits' which can clearly describe the characteristics of the street. Taking Beijing as an example, this study aims to make a comprehensive and objective evaluation of the streets in the Old City of Beijing. Methodologically, the properties of a street are identified and categorized into three aspects: street function, street vitality, and street quality, which further helps establish an evaluation indicator system for the 'Street Portraits.' In result, various 'Street Portraits' of the Old City of Beijing are presented by data visualization, by using the Nightingale Rose diagram tool to integrate all the indicators of individual streets and thus describing the distinctive 'Street Portraits.'
