| 1 | The intracellular mechanism of alpha-fetoprotein promoting the proliferation of NIH 3T3 cells显示文摘AIM The existence and properties of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) receptor on the surface of NIH 3T3 cells and the effects of AFP on cellular signal transduction pathway were investigated. METHODS The effect of AFP on the proliferation of NIH 3T3 cells was measured by incorporation of 3H-TdR. Receptor-binding assay of 125I-AFP was performed to detect the properties of AFP receptor in NIH 3T3 cells. The influences of AFP on the [cAMP]i and the activities of protein kinase A (PKA) were determined. Western blot was used to detect the change of K-ras P21 protein expression. RESULTS The proliferation of NIH 3T3 cells treated with 0-80 mg/L of AFP was significantly enhanced. The Scatchard analysis indicated that there were two classes of binding sites with KD of 2.722×10-9M (Bmax=12810 sites per cell) and 8.931× 10-SM (Bmax=l19700 sites per cell) respectively. In the presence of AFP (20 mg/L), the content of cAMP and activities of PKA were significantly elevated . The level of K-ras P21 protein was upregulated by AFP at the concentration of 20 mg/L. The monoclonal antibody against AFP could reverse the effects of AFP on the cAMP content, PKA activity and the expression of K-ras p21 gene. This algorithm compresses the data effectively by using a tool 'Sparse Feature Vector', thus reduces the data scale enormously, and can get the clustering result with only one data scan. Both theoretical analysis and empirical tests showed that CABOSFV is of low computational complexity. | 7 | Mining and Integrating Reliable Decision Rules for Imbalanced Cancer Gene Expression Data Sets显示文摘There have been many skewed cancer gene expression datasets in the post-genomic era. Extraction of differential expression genes or construction of decision rules using these skewed datasets by traditional algorithms will seriously underestimate the performance of the minority class, leading to inaccurate diagnosis in clinical trails. This paper presents a skewed gene selection algorithm that introduces a weighted metric into the gene selection procedure. The extracted genes are paired as decision rules to distinguish both classes, with these decision rules then integrated into an ensemble learning framework by majority voting to recognize test examples; thus avoiding tedious data normalization and classifier construction. | 8 | Aeolian Facies Belts in the Taklimakan Desert显示文摘At least at the beginning of the last glacial epoch, the facies belts of dune sand, sandy loam and loess formed by winds had existed in the Taklimakan desert and areas south of it. There were no appreciable changes in the NE and NW wind systems and their wind fqrces that deposited dune sand, sandy loam and loess in the global cold stage since the last glacial epoch (accordingly no marked shifts of the boundaries of these aeolian facies belts took place. In the global warm stage since then, the climate in the Taklimakan desert and areas south of it became warm and dry, resulting in ablation of substantial volumes of ice and snow in their surrounding mountains and thus forming alluvial and diluvial deposits in the region. | 9 | Changes in plant species composition and diversity of alpine Kobresia (Kobresia pygmaea) steppe meadow at different stages of desertification in the North Tibetan plateau显示文摘The impacts of desertification on the vegetation composition, structure, and species diversity of alpine Kobresia steppe meadow were evaluated in an area of severe desertification in Anduo County, Tibet Autonomous Region, northern China. We investigated and analyzed the floristic features of communities at four different stages of desertification (slight desertification [SLD], moderate desertification [MD], severe desertification [SD], and very severe desertification [VSD]). The composition and structure of the alpine Kobresia steppe meadow at the SLD site differed significantly from that at the MD, SD, and VSD sites. Species that were more drought resistant and inedible by livestock were the dominant species at the SD site. No plants were found in the shifting dunes of the VSD site. Species diversity also decreased with increasing desertification. The SLD site had the largest mean number of species and individuals and the largest richness index; the MD grassland had the largest Shannon-Wiener index and evenness index, but the smallest Simpson's index. | 10 | The scoring system for patients with severe sepsis after orthotopic liver transplantation显示文摘BACKGROUND: Because of the complicated pathological features after liver transplantation, severe sepsis is difficult to treat and often leads to death. This study was undertaken to analyze the role of orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) in patients with severe sepsis and to evaluate the effect of the scoring system. METHODS: Fifty-six patients conformed to the inclusion criteria. They were divided into two groups: non-OLT group (group A) and OLT group (group B). Besides the general data of the patients, the surveillance of blood lactate, the number of failed organs, acute physiology and chronic health evaluationⅡ(APACHEⅡ) and mutiple organ dysfunction score (MODS) were evaluated at the 1st, 3rd and 7th day after OLT. RESULTS: The mortality during hospitalization was 30% in the non-OLT group and 57.6% in the other group. The level of blood lactate at the 1st day of OLT increased more significantly in the OLT group than in the non-OLT group (P<0.01). It was decreased but higher than that in the non-OLT group in the seven days after OLT. The number of failed organs in the OLT group was greater than that in the non-OLT group (P<0.01). The continuous score of APACHEⅡwas not significantly different in the two groups. But the continuous MODS in the OLT group was higher than that in the non-OLT group (P<0.01), which was consistent with the number of failed organs. CONCLUSIONS: The persistently higher level of blood lactate during 7 days may be a dependent risk factor. Immunosuppression may be another risk factor for OLT patients. The mortality of OLT in patients with severe sepsis in 28 days is almost double that in non-OLT patients. The MODS score is better than the APACHEⅡscore in the assessment of organ failure in OLT patients with severe sepsis. | 11 | The causes and processes responsible for rocky desertification in karst areas of southern China显示文摘The karst region of southern China is a fragile ecological zone with widespread rocky desertification. This paper describes the rocky desertification occurring in this region in terms of both natural and anthropogenic factors. During geological time periods, the region's changing environment governed the natural rocky desertification processes, whereas during historical and modern times, anthropogenic processes have been superimposed on these natural processes. Human activities have accelerated and exacerbated rocky desertification. The period from the beginning to the middle of the Qing dynasty was an important transitional period in which human activities began to exert a particularly strong influence on rocky desertification. Since then, the effect of anthropogenic factors has increasingly exceeded the effect of natural factors. The rocky desertification process in southern China's karst region combines surface ecological processes (including vegetation degradation and loss, soil erosion, surface water loss, and bedrock solution) with a reduction of the land's biological productivity, leading to degradation that produces rocky desert. | 14 | Effects of 3,4-DichIOrOaniline on Testicle Enzymes as Biological Markers in Rats显示文摘Objective To investigate the effects of 3,4-dichloroaniline(3,4-DCA) on activities of testicle enzymes as biological markers in rats.Methods Fifty male rats were randomly divided into 5 groups(n=10).One group was left untreated and used as a solvent control(administered orally by corn oil),while the other 4 groups were treated with 3,4-DCA.Corn oil was used as a solvent,and 3,4-DCA was diluted into tested concentrations(39,81,170,and 357 mg/kg).All the groups orally administered 3.4-DCA or corn oil,once a day for 4 weeks.The testicle tissue was homogenized in a 0.1 mol/L potassium phosphate buffer(0.1 mol/L,pH 7.2).The crude homogenate was centrifuged at 6000 rpm for 5 min at 4℃.The supematant obtained was used as an enzyme extract for determination of the enzyme activities.Results Compared with the contrl,the activities of ALP,ACP,and SDH were increased significantly at a lower level of 3,4-DCA,and decreased at a higher level of 3, 4-DCA,whreas the activities of LDH,LDH-X,and G6PDH were inhibited significantly with the increased 3,4-DCA concentration.Organ coefficient'organ weight/total body weight×100'of testis,liver,and spleen increased significantly with the increased 3,4-DCA concentration.These results suggest that 3.4-DCA toxicity to the male reproductive system was associated with the activities of testicular enzymes which are the sensitive biochemical endpoints reflecting 3,4-DCA toxicity to the male reproductive system.Conclusion 3,4-DCA has toxicity to the reproductive system in male rats. | Bo ZHANG~2 AND SEN LIN Department ofBiology,College ofApplied Sciences and Humanities,Beijing Union University, Beijing 100083,China | 2009 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2009,22,1: | 2 |

| 19 | Microstructure evolution of laser rapidly solidified Al-Mn alloys显示文摘A series of laser surface remelting experiments of Al-1.1, 3.2 and 5.6 wt% Mn alloys has been conducted using a 5 kW CW CO2 laser, and the microstructures of samples have also been investigated. The experimental results show that no apparent eutectic growth appears in the whole growth rate range for Al-3.2 wt% Mn alloy under laser rapid solidification condition, and the microstructure grows in the form of α(Al) cell/dendrite. With the increase of growth rate, the microstructures of Al-5.6wt%Mn alloy change from Al6Mn dendrite to α(Al) +Al6Mn eutectic, α(Al) cellular/dendrite and segregation-free solid solution. The critical rates of Al-1.1, 3.2 and 5.6 wt% Mn alloys to attain absolute stability are 44.1, 134.6 and 230.1 mm/s respectively, and a reasonable agreement has been found between the experimental results and those calculated according to Mullins-Sekerka's theory. | YANG Sen, HUANG Weidong, LIU Wenjin and ZHOU Yaohe(1.
