Progress in additive manufacturing on new materials: A review显示文摘Recent efforts and advances in additive manufacturing(AM) on different types of new materials are presented and reviewed. Special attention is paid to the material design of cladding layers, the choice of feedstock materials, the metallurgical behavior and synthesis principle during the AM process, and the resulted microstructures and properties, as well as the relationship between these factors. Thereafter, the trend of development in the future is forecasted, including: Effects of the particles size and size distribution of powders; Approaches for producing fine microstructures; Opportunities for creating new materials by AM; Wide applications in reconditioning of damaged components; Challenges for deep understanding and applications of the AMed new materials. The idea of 'Develop Materials' or 'Create Materials' by AM is highlighted, but a series of scientific, technological and engineering problems remain to be solved in future. | Neng Li Shuai Huang Guodong Zhang Renyao Qin Wei Liu Huaping Xiong Gongqi Shi Jon Blackburn | 2019 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2019,35,2: | 47
Perspective and Prospects for Rare Earth Permanent Magnets显示文摘Rare earth permanent magnets constitute a mature technology, but the shock of the 2011 rare earth crisis led to the re-evaluation of many ideas from the 1980s and 1990s about possible new hard magnets containing little or no rare earth(or heavy rare earth).Nd-Fe-B magnets have been painstakingly and skillfully optimized for a wide range of applications in which high performance is required at reasonable cost.Sm-Co is the material of choice when high-temperature stability is required, and Sm-Fe-N magnets are making their way into some niche applications. The scope for improvement in these basic materials by substitution has been rather thoroughly explored, and the effects of processing techniques on the microstructure and hysteresis are largely understood.A big idea from a generation ago-which held real potential to raise the record energy product significantly-was the oriented exchange-spring hard/soft nanocomposite magnet;however,it has proved very difficult to realize.Nevertheless, the field has evolved, and innovation has flourished in other areas. For example, electrical personal transport has progressed from millions of electric bicycles to the point where cars and trucks with electrical drives are becoming mainstream, and looks ready to bring the dominance of the internal combustion engine to an end.As the limitations of particular permanent magnets become clearer, ingenuity and imagination are being used to design around them, and to exploit the available mix of rare earth resources most efficiently.Huge new markets in robotics beckon, and the opportunities offered by additive manufacturing are just beginning to be explored.New methods of increasing magnet stability at elevated temperature are being developed, and integrated multifunctionality of hard magnets with other useful properties is now envisaged. These themes are elaborated here, with various examples. | J.M.D.Coey | 2020 | Engineering2020,6,2: | 31
Cold metal transfer(CMT) technology-An overview显示文摘Cold Metal Transfer technology has revolutionized the welding of dissimilar metals and thicker materials by producing improved weld bead aesthetics with controlled metal deposition and low heat-input. In this study, the process, weld combinations, laser-CMT hybrid welding and applications of CMT welding are critically reviewed. Microstructure and other weld characteristics have been discussed at length for various base metal combinations. Particularly, the welding of aluminium and steel with better results has been possible with CMT Welding. The results reviewed in this article indicate that the CMT-Laser hybrid welding is more preferable to Laser or Laser hybrid welding. CMT welding has found applications in automobile industries, defence sectors and power plants as a method of additive manufacturing. | S.Selvi A.Vishvaksenan E.Rajasekar | 2018 | Defence Technology(防务技术)2018,14,1: | 22
Fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V cellular structures fabricated by additive manufacturing technique显示文摘Porous titanium and its alloys have been considered as promising replacement for dense implants, as they possess low elastic modulus comparable to that of compact human bones and are capable of providing space for in-growth of bony tissues to achieve a better fixation. Recently, the additive manufacturing(AM) method has been successfully applied to the fabrication of Ti-6 Al-4 V cellular meshes and foams.Comparing to traditional fabrication methods, the AM method offers advantages of accurate control of complex cell shapes and internal pore architectures, thus attracting extensive attention. Considering the long-term safety in the human body, the metallic cellular structures should possess high fatigue strength. In this paper, the recent progress on the fatigue properties of Ti-6 Al-4 V cellular structures fabricated by the AM technique is reviewed. The various design factors including cell shapes, surface properties, post treatments and graded porosity distribution affecting the fatigue properties of additive manufactured Ti-6 Al-4 V cellular structures were introduced and future development trends were also discussed. | Dechun Ren Shujun Li Hao Wang Wentao Hou Yulin Hao Wei Jin Rui Yang R.Devesh K.Misra Lawrence E.Murr | 2019 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2019,35,2: | 15
3DPMD-Arc-based additive manufacturing with titanium powder as raw material显示文摘The study aims to demonstrate the suitability of the 3DPMD for the production of titanium components with and without reinforcing particles in layer-by-layer design. Various demonstrators are prepared and analyzed. The microstructure, the porosity and the hardness values of the different structures are compared with each other through metallographic cross-sections. The uniform distribution of the carbides and the interaction with the matrix was analyzed by SEM and EDX.The miller-test method(ASTM G75-07) was used to determine data for the relative abrasivity of the structures. In summary, 3DPMD offers the possibility to produce titanium structures with and without reinforced particles. Using automated routines, it is possible to generate metal structures using welding robots directly from the CAD drawings. Microstructures and properties are directly related to the process and therefore material-process-property relationships are discussed within this work. | Hoefer Kevin Mayr Peter | 2019 | China Welding2019,28,1: | 12
Applying Neural-Network-Based Machine Learning to Additive Manufacturing:Current Applications,Challenges, and Future Perspectives显示文摘Additive manufacturing(AM),also known as three-dimensional printing,is gaining increasing attention from academia and industry due to the unique advantages it has in comparison with traditional subtractive manufacturing. However,AM processing parameters are difficult to tune, since they can exert a huge impact on the printed microstructure and on the performance of the subsequent products. It is a difficult task to build a process-structure-property-performance(PSPP)relationship for AM using traditional numerical and analytical models.Today, the machine learning(ML)method has been demonstrated to be a valid way to perform complex pattern recognition and regression analysis without an explicit need to construct and solve the underlying physical models.Among ML algorithms, the neural network(NN)is the most widely used model due to the large dataset that is currently available, strong computational power, and sophisticated algorithm architecture. This paper overviews the progress of applying the NN algorithm to several aspects of the AM whole chain, including model design,in situ monitoring, and quality evaluation.Current challenges in applying NNs to AM and potential solutions for these problems are then outlined. Finally, future trends are proposed in order to provide an overall discussion of this interdisciplinary area. | Xinbo Qi Guofeng Chen Yong Li Xuan Cheng Changpeng Li | 2019 | Engineering2019,5,4: | 11
Development of Micro Selective Laser Melting:The State of the Art and Future Perspectives显示文摘Additive manufacturing(AM)is gaining traction in the manufacturing industry for the fabrication of components with complex geometries using a variety of materials.Selective laser melting(SLM)is a common AM technique that is based on powder-bed fusion(PBF)to process metals;however,it is currently focused only on the fabrication of macroscale and mesoscale components. This paper reviews the state of the art of the SLM of metallic materials at the microscale level. In comparison with the direct writing techniques that are commonly used for micro AM,micro SLM is attractive due to a number of factors, including a faster cycle time, process simplicity, and material versatility.A comprehensive evaluation of various research works and commercial systems for the fabrication of microscale parts using SLM and selective laser sintering(SLS)is conducted. In addition to identifying existing issues with SLM at the microscale, which include powder recoating, laser optics, and powder particle size, this paper details potential future directions.A detailed review of existing recoating methods in powder-bed techniques is conducted, along with a description of emerging efforts to implement dry powder dispensing methods in the AM domain.A number of secondary finishing techniques for AM components are reviewed, with a focus on implementation for microscale features and integration with micro SLM systems. | Balasubramanian Nagarajan Zhiheng Hu Xu Song Wei Zhai Jun Wei | 2019 | Engineering2019,5,4: | 9
Laser additive manufacturing of Zn porous scaffolds: Shielding gas flow, surface quality and densification显示文摘Zn based metals have exhibited promising prospects as a structural material for biodegradable applications. Pure Zn porous scaffolds were produced by laser powder bed fusion(LPBF) based on data files of designing and CT scanning. Massive Zn evaporation during laser melting largely influenced the formation quality during LPBF of Zn metal. The metal vapor in processing chamber was blown off and suctioned out efficiently by an optimized gas circulation system. Numerical analysis was used to design and testify the performance of gas flow. The surface of scaffolds was covered with numerous particles in different sizes. Processing pores occurred near the outline contour of struts. The average grain size in width was8.5m, and the hardness was 43.8 HV. Chemical plus electrochemical polishing obtained uniform and smooth surface without processing pores, but the diameter of struts reduced to 250 αm from the design value 300 m. The poor surface quality and processing pores were resulted by the splashing particles included spatters and powders due to the recoil force of evaporation, and the horizontal movement of liquid metal due to overheating and wetting. The insufficient melting at the outline contour combined with good wetting of Zn liquid metal further increased the surface roughness and processing pores. | Peng Wen Yu Qin Yanzhe Chen Maximilian Voshage Lucas Jauer Reinhart Poprawe Johannes Henrich Schleifenbaum | 2019 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2019,35,2: | 9
Cross section scan trace planning based on arc additive manufacturing显示文摘In the context of additive manufacturing processes, the influence of specimen deformation from different welding paths is conducted by using CMT-AM.A least-squares method was used to quantitatively measure specimen deformation. The values of S(i.e.,the sum of the distance from each feature point in a plane to the ideal plane)from different welding paths had significant influence on deformation of deposited layer. With the value of S increasing, the deformation of deposited layer gradually increased. With this result,a suitable welding trace plan was ascertained, which was successfully used to acquire well-formed and densely organized specimens during the arc-welding additive manufacturing process. Our results provide a foundation for experiments based on deposited layer scanning trace planning. | 孙清洁 桑海波 刘一博 冯吉才 | 2019 | China Welding2019,28,4: | 8
High mechanical strengths and ductility of stainless steel 304L fabricated using selective laser melting显示文摘Achieving not only high mechanical strengths but also high ductility is recently established using an additive manufacturing technique called selective laser melting. In the present study, stainless steel 304 L fully dense samples were successfully printed using the 3 D systems – ProX 300 printing machine. The ductility and tensile yield strength were almost two and three times higher compared to those of ASTM cast's alloy. Honey comb like nano-cellular structure with different orientation was observed in the fine grains(~4μm) due to fast cooling rate. In addition, the formation of martensite phase in random grains is also a contributor to the strengths. Furthermore, negative residual stresses in the build and horizontal directions were detected and assisted further increase in the tensile strength. Fractography revealed the ductile feature of plastic deformation and the crack openings at unmelted particles or pores. | Q.B.Nguyen Z.Zhu F.L.Ng B.W.Chua S.M.L.Nai J.Wei | 2019 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2019,35,2: | 8

Achieving strength-ductility synergy in cold spray additively manufactured Al/B4C composites through a hybrid post-deposition treatment显示文摘Cold spray additive manufacturing(CSAM) provides a potential solid state manufacturing route to fabricate variety of aluminum matrix composites(AMCs) with reduced possibility of undesired chemical reactions and residual thermal stresses. This study presents a hybrid(i.e. hot compression + hot rolling)post-deposition treatment to reinvigorate the mechanical properties of cold spray additively manufactured Al/B4 C composites. The as-deposited samples were initially subjected to 30% thickness reduction via hot compression treatment at 500°C followed by a hot rolling treatment with 40% thickness reduction in 2 passes. Electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM) results revealed that after hybrid post-deposition treatment(involving 70%accumulative thickness reduction), the aluminum grains in the matrix were extensively refined due to simultaneous operation of continuous dynamic recrystallization(CDRX) and geometric dynamic recrystallization(GDRX). Furthermore, interfacial defects were remarkably reduced while the nature of Al/Al and Al/B4C interfacial bonding was changed from sheer mechanical interlocking to metallurgical bonding which facilitated efficient transference of applied load to uniformly dispersed bimodal B4C particles. As a result, ultimate tensile strength(UTS) and elongation(EL) of the as-deposited sample were simultaneously improved from 37 to 185 MPa and 0.3% to 6.2%, respectively. | Naeem ul Haq Tariq Lawrence Gyansah Xiang Qiu Chunnijia Hasan Bin Awais Chengwu Zheng Hao Du Jiqiang Wang Tianying Xiong | 2019 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2019,35,6: | 7
Effects of microstructure on fatigue crack propagation behavior in a bi-modal TC11 titanium alloy fabricated via laser additive manufacturing显示文摘In this study, the crack propagation behaviors in the equiaxed and equiaxed-columnar grain regions of a heat-treated laser additive manufacturing(LAM) TC11 alloy with a special bi-modal microstructure are investigated. The results indicate that the alloy presents a special bi-modal microstructure that comprises a fork-like primary α(αp) phase surrounded by a secondary α colony(αs) in the α phase matrix after the heat treatment is completed. The samples demonstrate a fast crack growth rate with larger da/d N values through the equiaxed grain sample versus across the equiaxed-columnar grain sample at low K values(<13.8). The differences that are observed between the crack propagation behaviors(in the crack initiation stage) of the samples can be mostly attributed to the different size and morphology of the αp lamellae and αscolony within the grains in the equiaxed and columnar grain regions rather than the grain boundaries. The cracks prefer to grow along the α/β boundary with a smooth propagation route and a fast propagation rate in the equiaxed grain region, where the αpand α clusters have a large size. However, in the columnar grain region, small and randomly distributed αplamellae generate a zigzagshaped propagation path with a reduction in the da/d N value. Additionally, the change in the size of the αp lamellae in the equiaxed grains(heat affected bands, HAB) is also observed to influence the propagation behavior of the crack during the crack initiation stage. | Yafei Wang Rui Chen Xu Cheng Yanyan Zhu Jikui Zhang Huaming Wang | 2019 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2019,35,2: | 6
The effects of fabrication atmosphere condition on the microstructural and mechanical properties of laser direct manufactured stainless steel 17-4 PH显示文摘The effects of atmosphere conditions on microstructural and mechanical properties of stainless steel 17-4PH components fabricated by laser direct manufacturing (LDM) were investigated through mea-surements on phase constitution, porosity, tensile strength, fracture morphology, hardness and evolution of substrate temperature. Results showed that the samples produced in air atmosphere condition pos-sessed higher tensile strength and hardness for both as-deposited and heat-treated states than that in Ar chamber condition, due to dispersion strengthening effect of amorphous oxide particles and nitrogen solution strengthening as a result of higher content of oxygen and nitrogen. The temperature of substrate heat accumulation was higher in Ar chamber condition, leading to dramatically lower porosity and more reverse austenite, which also contributed to the lower strength and hardness. | D.Wang C.T.Chi W.Q.Wang Y.L.Li M.S.Wang X.G.Chen Z.H.Chen X.P.Cheng Y.J.Xie | 2019 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2019,35,7: | 6
Grain boundary and microstructure engineering of Inconel 690 cladding on stainless-steel 316L using electron-beam powder bed fusion additive manufacturing显示文摘This research explores the prospect of fabricating a face-centered cubic(fcc) Ni-base alloy cladding(Inconel 690) on an fcc Fe-base alloy(316 L stainless-steel) having improved mechanical properties and reduced sensitivity to corrosion through grain boundary and microstructure engineering concepts enabled by additive manufacturing(AM) utilizing electron-beam powder bed fusion(EPBF). The unique solidification and associated constitutional supercooling phenomena characteristic of EPBF promotes[100] textured and extended columnar grains having lower energy grain boundaries as opposed to random, high-angle grain boundaries, but no coherent {111} twin boundaries characteristic of conventional thermo-mechanically processed fcc metals and alloys, including Inconel 690 and 316 L stainless-steel.In addition to [100] textured grains, columnar grains were produced by EPBF fabrication of Inconel 690 claddings on 316 L stainless-steel substrates. Also, irregular 2–3 μm diameter, low energy subgrains were formed along with dislocation densities varying from 108 to 109 cm^2, and a homogeneous distribution of Cr_(23)C_6 precipitates. Precipitates were formed within the grains(with ~3 μm interparticle spacing),but not in the subgrain or columnar grain boundaries. These inclusive, hierarchical microstructures produced a tensile yield strength of 0.527 GPa, elongation of 21%, and Vickers microindentation hardness of 2.33 GPa for the Inconel 690 cladding in contrast to a tensile yield strength of 0.327 GPa, elongation of 53%, and Vickers microindentation hardness of 1.78 GPa, respectively for the wrought 316 L stainlesssteel substrate. Aging of both the Inconel 690 cladding and the 316 L stainless-steel substrate at 685?C for50 h precipitated Cr_(23)C_6 carbides in the Inconel 690 columnar grain boundaries, but not in the low-angle(and low energy) subgrain boundaries. In contrast, Cr_(23)C_6 carbides precipitated in the 316 L stainless-steel grain boundaries, but not in the low energy coherent {111} twin boundaries. Consequently, the Inconel690 subgrain boundaries essentially serve as surrogates for coherent twin boundaries with regard to avoiding carbide precipitation and corrosion sensitization. | I.A.Segura L.E.Murr C.A.Terrazas D.Bermudez J.Mireles V.S.V.Injeti K.Li B.Yu R.D.K.Misra R.B.Wicker | 2019 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2019,35,2: | 5
Additive manufacturing of Sm-Fe-N magnets显示文摘Isotropic Sm-Fe-N bonded magnets were obtained by additive manufacturing(AM). The technique used was the so-called powder bed fusion(PBF) and the feedstock was composed of a polymeric binder(PA-12) and Sm-Fe-N flake particles(Nitroquench-P). The AM set-up equipment uses a computer-controlled CO2 laser beam to melt the binder and constructs magnets layer-by-layer. In order to develop this study, a cylinder with 10 mm of both height and diameter was selected as the shape of samples. Specimens were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and X-ray diffraction(XRD). Magnetic properties were measured in a hysteresis graph. XRD results indicate that there is no degradation of the main magnetic phase(SmFe7 Nx). In the AM component, porous regions were identified on SEM micrographs, as well as magnetic particles and polymeric binder. Remanence values(Br) as great as 0.3 T are achieved, while intrinsic coercivities remain in the range from 616 up to 642 kA/m. An additional isostatic compression of the parts results in greater remanence, which is directly proportional to the density increase. Coercivity is also sensitive to the porosity decrease, probably due to a better interlocking of particles. Current results indicate AM as a promising route for near net-shape manufacturing of Sm-Fe-N permanent magnets, a market niche yet to be widely explored. | J.A.B.Engerroff A.B.Baldissera M.D.Magalhaes P.H.Lamarao P.A.P.Wendhausen C.H.Ahrens J.M.Mascheroni | 2019 | Journal of Rare Earths2019,37,10: | 5
A new design of dual-constituent triangular lattice metamaterial with unbounded thermal expansion显示文摘Triangular lattice metamaterials composed of bi-layer curved rib elements (called the Lehman-Lakes lattice) possess unbounded thermal expansion, high stiffness and impossibility of thermal buckling, which are highly desirable in many engineering structural applications subjected to large fluctuations in temperature. However, the requirement of such lattice metamaterial is that it must be a hinged joint in order to achieve the bending deformation upon heating freely, which directly leads to poor manufacturability, especially in small dimensions. In this study, a new design of dual-constituent triangular lattice metamaterial (DTLM) with good manufacturability is proposed to achieve the identical unbounded thermal expansion. In this lattice, a special bi-layer curved rib element where layer one is partially covered by layer two is presented, where the hinge joints are not necessary because the flexural rigidity in the single-layer part is much smaller than that in the bi-layer part, and the desirable thermal bending deformation can be achieved. A sample fabricated by additive manufacturing is given in order to show the good manufacturability;simultaneously, the multifunctional performance of the tailored DTLM with zero, large positive or negative coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) can remain excellent, as well as the Lehman-Lakes lattice. Examples illustrate that the DTLM with zero CTE has about 34.2% improvement in stiffness and meanwhile has 17% reduction in weight compared with the Lehman-Lakes lattice. The stiffness of the DTLM has a moderate reduction when achieving the same large positive or negative CTE. In addition, the thermomechanical properties of the DTLM are given by the closed-form analytical solution and their effectiveness is verified by the detailed numerical simulation. | Y.C.Zhang Y.J.Liang S.T.Liu Y.D.Su | 2019 | Acta Mechanica Sinica2019,35,3: | 5

Fatigue behavior of direct laser deposited Ti-6.5Al-2Zr-1Mo-1V titanium alloy and its life distribution model显示文摘The present work aims to investigate the fatigue behavior of Direct Laser Deposition(DLD) Ti-6.5 Al-2 Zr-1 Mo-1 V titanium alloy under constant amplitude stress. 22 pieces of DLD Ti-6.5 Al-2 Zr-1 Mo-1 V titanium alloy standard cylinder specimens were tested under a stress level of 800 MPa with a stress ratio of 0.06. Fatigue fractography and fatigue life data were obtained.Through the fracture surface analysis, the specimens were divided into two categories in accordance with the location of crack initiation and defect types. Comparison of fatigue life and behavior between two specimen types was given, which was followed by a discussion about the impact of defect type, size and position on the fatigue life of the specimen. The fatigue test results also show a large variation of fatigue life. To illustrate the statistical characteristics of the fatigue life, probabilistic analysis was performed, and a novel bimodal lognormal model was established. The model has a good fit with the experimental data and can reduce the scatter of the fatigue life significantly. | Xiaofan HE Tianshuai WANG Xiaobo WANG Weigang ZHAN Yuhai LI | 2018 | Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2018,31,11: | 5
