Recent Advances in Energy Chemical Engineering of Next-Generation Lithium Batteries显示文摘Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)afford a profound impact on our modern daily life. However,LIBs are approaching the theoretical energy density, due to the inherent limitations of intercalation chemistry;thus, they cannot further satisfy the increasing demands of portable electronics, electric vehicles, and grids. Therefore, battery chemistries beyond LIBs are being widely investigated.Next-generation lithium(Li)batteries, which employ Li metal as the anode and intercalation or conversion materials as the cathode, receive the most intensive interest due to their high energy density and excellent potential for commercialization. Moreover, significant progress has been achieved in Li batteries attributed to the increasing fundamental understanding of the materials and reactions,as well as to technological improvement. This review starts by summarizing the electrolytes for next-generation Li batteries.Key challenges and recent progress in lithium-ion,lithium–sulfur,and lithium–oxygen batteries are then reviewed from the perspective of energy and chemical engineering science. Finally, possible directions for further development in Li batteries are presented.Next-generation Li batteries are expected to promote the sustainable development of human civilization.Xue-Qiang Zhang Chen-Zi Zhao Jia-Qi Huang Qiang Zhang 2018Engineering2018,4,6:22
Lithium–matrix composite anode protected by a solid electrolyte layer for stable lithium metal batteries显示文摘Lithium (Li) metal with an ultrahigh specific theoretical capacity and the lowest reduction potential is strongly considered as a promising anode for high-energy-density batteries. However, uncontrolled lithium dendrites and infinite volume change during repeated plating/stripping cycles hinder its practical applications immensely. Herein, a house-like Li anode (housed Li) was designed to circumvent the above issues. The house matrix was composed of carbon fiber matrix and affords a stable structure to relieve the volume change. An artificial solid electrolyte layer was formed on composite Li metal, just like the roof of a house, which facilitates uniform Li ions diffusion and serves as a physical barrier against electrolyte corrosion. With the combination of solid electrolyte layer and matrix in the composite Li metal anode, both dendrite growth and volume expansion are remarkably inhibited. The housed Li|LiFePO4 batteries exhibited over 95% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 1.0 C in coin cell and 85% capacity retention after 80 cycles at 0.5 C in pouch cell. The rationally combination of solid electrolyte layer protection and housed framework in one Li metal anode sheds fresh insights on the design principle of a safe and long-lifespan Li metal anode for Li metal batteries.Xin Shen Xinbing Cheng Peng Shi Jiaqi Huang Xueqiang Zhang Chong Yan Tao Li Qiang Zhang 2019Journal of Energy Chemistry2019,28,10:23
A scalable synthesis of silicon nanoparticles as high-performance anode material for lithium-ion batteries显示文摘In this work, a scalable and cost-effective method including mechanical milling, centrifugation and spray drying was developed to fabricate Si nanoparticles. The synthesized Si nanoparticles show an average size of 62 nm and exhibit a narrow particle size distribution. The influence of particle sizes on electrochemical performance of Si-based electrode was investigated, and it is found that as the particle size decreases in the studied range, the Si particles show a lower specific capacity and a higher irreversible capacity loss(ICL). Furthermore, an oxide layer with thickness of ~3 nm was detected on the surface of the as-received Si nanoparticles, and this layer can be effectively removed by hydrofluoric acid(HF) etching, resulting in much improved electrochemical performance over the as-received samples.Jin Li Juan-Yu Yang Jian-Tao Wang Shi-Gang Lu 2019Rare Metals2019,38,3:20

Recent advances in gel polymer electrolyte for high-performance lithium batteries显示文摘Lithium batteries (LBs) have become increasingly important energy storage systems in our daily life. However, their practical applications are still severely plagued by the safety issues from liquid electrolyte, especially when the batteries are exposed to mechanical, thermal, or electrical abuse conditions. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are being considered as an effective solution to replace currently available organic liquid electrolyte for building safer LBs. This review provides recent advancements in GPEs applied for high-performance LBs. On the one hand, from the environmental and economic point of view, the skeletons of GPEs changed from traditional polymer to renewable and degradable polymer. On the other hand, in addition to being as a component with good electrochemical and physical characterizations, the GPEs also need to provide some functions for addressing the concerns of lithium (Li) dendrites, unstable cathode electrolyte interface, dissolution and migration of transition metal ions,'shuttle effect' of polysulfides, and so on. Finally, to synchronously meet the challenges from the advanced cathode and Li metal anode, the bio-based GPEs with multi-functionality are proposed to develop high-energy/powerdensity batteries in the future.Ming Zhu Jiaxin Wu Yue Wang Mingming Song Lei Long Sajid Hussain Siyal Xiaoping Yang Gang Sui 2019Journal of Energy Chemistry2019,28,10:17
Recent progress on lithium-ion batteries with high electrochemical performance显示文摘Lithium-ion batteries(LIBs) have been widely used in many fields such as portable electronics and electric vehicles since their successful commercialization in the 1990 s. However, the electrochemical performance of current commercial LIBs still needs to be further improved to meet the continuously increasing demands for energy storage applications. Recently, tremendous research efforts have been made in developing next-generation LIBs with enhanced electrochemical performance. In this review, we mainly focus on the recent progress of LIBs with high electrochemical performance from four aspects, including cathode materials, anode materials, electrolyte, and separators. We discuss not only the commercial electrode materials(LiCoO_2,LiFePO_4, LiMn_2O_4, LiNi_xMn_yCo_zO_2, LiNi_xCo_yAl_zO_2, and graphite) but also other promising next-generation materials such as Li-, Mn-rich layered oxides, organic cathode materials, Si, and Li metal. For each type of materials, we highlight their problems and corresponding strategies to enhance their electrochemical performance. Nowadays, one of the key challenges to construct high-performance LIBs is how to develop cathode materials with high capacity and working voltage. This review provides an overview and future perspectives to develop next-generation LIBs with high electrochemical performance.Yong Lu Qiu Zhang Jun Chen 2019Science China Chemistry2019,62,5:16
Biomass-derived nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon as efficient sulfur host for lithium–sulfur batteries显示文摘Lithium-sulfur(Li-S) battery is a potential energy storage technology with high energy density and low cost. However, the gap between theoretical expectation and practical performance limits its wide implementation. Herein, we report a nitrogen-doped porous carbon derived from biomass pomelo peel as sulfur host material for Li-S batteries. The hierarchical porous architecture and the polar surface introduced by N-doping render a favorable combination of physical and chemical sulfur confinements as well as an expedite electron/ion transfer, thus contributing to a facilitated and stabilized sulfur electrochemistry. As a result, the corresponding sulfur composite electrodes exhibit an ultrahigh initial capacity of 1534.6 mAh g^-1, high coulombic efficiency over 98% upon 300 cycles, and decent rate capability up to 2 C. This work provides an economical and effective strategy for the fabrication of advanced carbonaceous sulfur host material as well as the significant improvement of Li-S battery performance.Qinghuiqiang Xiao Gaoran Li Minjie Li Ruiping Liu Haibo Li Pengfei Ren Yue Dong Ming Feng Zhongwei Chen 2020Journal of Energy Chemistry2020,29,5:15
Designing solid-state interfaces on lithium-metal anodes: a review显示文摘Li-metal anodes are one of the most promising energy storage systems that can considerably exceed the current technology to meet the ever-increasing demand of power applications. The apparent cycling performances and dendrite challenges of Li-metal anodes are highly influenced by the interface layer on the Li-metal anode because the intrinsic high reactivity of metallic Li results in an inevitable solid-state interface layer between the Li-metal and electrolytes. In this review, we summarize the recent progress on the interfacial chemistry regarding the interactions between electrolytes and ion migration through dynamic interfaces. The critical factors that affect the interface formation for constructing a stable interface with a low resistance are reviewed. Moreover, we review emerging strategies for rationally designing multiple-structured solid-state electrolytes and their interfaces, including the interfacial properties within hybrid electrolytes and the solid electrolyte/electrode interface. Finally, we present scientific issues and perspectives associated with Li-metal anode interfaces toward a practical Li-metal battery.Chen-Zi Zhao Hui Duan Jia-Qi Huang Juan Zhang Qiang Zhang Yu-Guo Guo Li-Jun Wan 2019Science China Chemistry2019,62,10:14

Necklace-like Si@C nano?bers as robust anode materials for high performance lithium ion batteries显示文摘Silicon is believed to be a promising anode material for lithium ion batteries because of its highest theoretical capacity and low discharge potential. However, severe pulverization and capacity fading caused by huge volume change during cycling limits its practical application. In this work, necklace-like N-doped carbon wrapped mesoporous Si nanofibers(NL-Si@C) network has been synthesized via electrospinning method followed by magnesiothermic reduction reaction process to suppress these issues. The mesoporous Si nanospheres are wrapped with N-doped carbon shells network to form yolk-shell structure.Interestingly, the distance of adjacent Si@C nanospheres can be controllably adjusted by different addition amounts of SiO_2 nanospheres. When used as an anode material for lithium ion batteries, the NL-Si@C-0.5 exhibits best cycling stability and rate capability. The excellent electrochemical performances can be ascribed to the necklace-like network structure and N-doped carbon layers, which can ensure fast ions and electrons transportation, facilitate the electrolyte penetration and provide finite voids to allow large volume expansion of inner Si nanoparticles. Moreover, the protective carbon layers are also beneficial to the formation of stable solid electrolyte interface film.Xiangzhong Kong Yuchao Zheng Yaping Wang Shuquan Liang Guozhong Cao Anqiang Pan 2019Science Bulletin2019,64,4:13
Synthesis of Alumina-Coated Natural Graphite for Highly Cycling Stability and Safety of Li-Ion Batteries显示文摘The natural graphite(NG)urdformly coated with alumina ceramics(Al2O3)was successfully synthesized through sol-gel method. The aluminum plastic film soft-packed battery prepared using Al2O3-coated NG as anode material exhibits excellent cycle performance and safety performance. The cycling retention of AN-1 is 84.95% after 200 cycles at a rate of 1 C in a potential window ranging from 3.0 to 4.35 V,which is much greater than 75.07% of NG under the same test conditions. The result of the nail penetration tests shows that the successful nail penetration rate of the NG used as anode is 0%,while that of Al2O3 coated samples AN-1 is 100%.The test results show that the Al2O3 coating could act as a solid electrolyte to suppress side reactions, improve cycle stability, and prevent a thermal runaway under mechanical abuse.Tao Xu Chengkun Zhou Haihui Zhou Zekun Wang Jianguo Ren 2019Chinese Journal of Chemistry2019,37,4:13
Lattice Boltzmann modeling of transport phenomena in fuel cells and flow batteries显示文摘Fuel cells and flow batteries are promising technologies to address climate change and air pollution problems. An understanding of the complex multiscale and multiphysics transport phenomena occurring in these electrochemical systems requires powerful numerical tools. Over the past decades, the lattice Boltzmann(LB) method has attracted broad interest in the computational fluid dynamics and the numerical heat transfer communities, primarily due to its kinetic nature making it appropriate for modeling complex multiphase transport phenomena. More importantly, the LB method fits well with parallel computing due to its locality feature, which is required for large-scale engineering applications. In this article, we review the LB method for gas–liquid two-phase flows, coupled fluid flow and mass transport in porous media, and particulate flows. Examples of applications are provided in fuel cells and flow batteries. Further developments of the LB method are also outlined.Ao Xu Wei Shyy Tianshou Zhao 2017Acta Mechanica Sinica2017,33,3:12
Three dimensional porous frameworks for lithium dendrite suppression显示文摘Lithium metal is a promising anode material owing to its very low electrochemical potential and ultrahigh specific capacity. However, the growth of lithium dendrites could result in a short lifespan, low coulombic efficiency, and potential safety hazards during the progress of lithium plating/stripping.These factors drastically hinder its application in lithium metal batteries. This review focuses on the use of three dimensional(3D)porous host frameworks to improve Li plating/stripping behaviors, accommodate the change in volume, and suppress or block lithium dendrite growth.Various 3D porous frameworks, including the conductive carbon-based,metal-based,and lithiophilic inorganic-compound frameworks are introduced and summarized in detail. The particular functions, relative developments, and optimized strategies of various 3D porous frameworks for lithium deposition/dissolution behaviors are discussed. Moreover, the challenges and promising developments in the field of Li metal anodes will be discussed at the end of this review.Shuyan Ni Shuangshuang Tan Qinyou An Liqiang Mai 2020Journal of Energy Chemistry2020,29,5:11
Porous bowl-shaped VS2 nanosheets/graphene composite for high-rate lithium-ion storage显示文摘Two-dimensional (2D) layered vanadium disulfide (VS2) is a promising anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) due to the high theoretical capacity. However,it remains a challenge to synthesize monodispersed ultrathin VS2 nanosheets to realize the full potential.Herein,a novel solvothermal method has been developed to prepare the monodispersed bowl-shaped NH3-inserted VS2 nanosheets (VS2).The formation of such a unique structure is caused by the blocked growth of (001) or (002) crystal planes in combination with a ripening process driven by the thermodynamics. The annealing treatment in Ar/H2creates porous monodispersed VS2(H-VS2),which is subsequently integrated with graphene oxide to form porous monodispersed H-VS2/rGO composite coupled with a reduction process. As an anode material for LIBs,H-VS2/rGO delivers superior rate performance and longer cycle stability:a high average capacity of 868/525 mAh g^-1 at a current density of 1/10 A g^-1;a reversible capacity of 1177/889 mAh g^-1 after 150/500 cycles at 0.2/1 A g^-1.Such excellent electrochemical performance may be attributed to the increased active sites available for lithium storage, the alleviated volume variations and the shortened Li-ion diffusion induced from the porous structure with large specific surface area,as well as the protective effect from graphene nanosheets.Daxiong Wu Caiyun Wang Mingguang Wu Yunfeng Chao Pengbin He Jianmin Ma 2020Journal of Energy Chemistry2020,29,4:11

Dendrite-free sandwiched ultrathin lithium metal anode with even lithium plating and stripping behavior显示文摘Thin artificial solid electrolyte coatings are effective to enhance the electrochemical performances and safety issues of lithium (Li) metal anode. However, massive and efficient fabrication of artificial protection layers on Li metal anode surface remains challenging.Herein,we describe a sandwiched Li metal anode fabricated through a continuous roll to roll calendering method to implant a thin and large-area carbon layer on Li metal anode surface at room temperature.Specifically,a carbon layer (~ 3 μm in thickness) can be entirely grafted from Cu substrate to 50 pm Li belt surface due to the stickiness of metallic Li.The carbon layer not only plays a critical role in providing rich nucleation sites for Li plating, but more importantly diminishes the metallurgical nonuniformity effects (slip lines) on stripping. Therefore, even Li plating/stripping morphologies are achieved and the as-obtained sandwiched Li/C composite anodes exhibit improved cycling stability both in Li | LiFePO4 and Li | S coin cells and pouch cells. This continuous roll to roll calendering strategy opens a new avenue for grafting various thin artificial protection layers on Li metal surface for safe rechargeable batteries.Tao Li Peng Shi Rui Zhang He Liu Xin-Bing Cheng Qiang Zhang 2019Nano Research2019,12,9:10
Choice for graphene as conductive additive for cathode of lithium-ion batteries显示文摘Graphene is a promising conductive additive for the lithium-ion batteries(LIBs) and shows great potential especially with its fast development of the large scale fabrication technology. This work has explored the influence of the incorporation of graphenes prepared by three typical methods on the electrochemical performance of the LiCoO_2-based cathode focusing on the choice for the effective graphene as conductive additive for the cathode of LIBs. Through the comparison of the intrinsic characteristics of graphenes and the electrochemical performance of electrodes with graphene, it is found that graphene with low disorder degree and large size is not suitable for LiCoO_2 cathodes as conductive additive. Conversely, the graphene with oxygen functional groups, relatively low surface area and proper size displays much better electrochemical performance when it is used as conductive additive. This work also demonstrates the transmission mechanism for different graphenes as conductive additives in the LiCoO_2 materials, and further reveals that the conductivity of graphene is not the only factor as conductive additives, surface chemistry and sheet size of the graphene are also essential factors which greatly influence the electrochemical performance of electrode. In addition, when combined with Super P, only 1% graphene is enough to construct an efficient conductive network in the electrode. This study also gives a new sight on the practical application of graphene as conductive additive for high performance LIBs.Ying Shi Lei Wen Songfeng Pei Minjie Wu Feng Li 2019Journal of Energy Chemistry2019,28,3:10
