Assessing the relative role of climate change and human activities in sandy desertification of Ordos region, China显示文摘Climate change and human activities are driving forces of sandy desertification and the relative role of them in sandy desertification is the hot point in related researches. A study was carried to assess the relative role of climate change and human activities in sandy desertification of Ordos region in China. Potential NPP and the difference between potential and actual NPP were selected as indicators to assess the relative role of climate change and human activities in sandy desertification, respectively. Assessing methods were built based on some scenarios for the reversion and expansion of sandy desertification and the relative role of climate change and human activities in sandy desertification of Ordos region were assessed from 1981 to 2000. The results showed that although some local places experienced an expansion of sandy desertification, the change of sandy desertification of Ordos region from 1981 to 2000 showed a stably reversing trend. The relative role of climate change and human activities in sandy desertification of Ordos region varied at different temporal and spatial scales in the reversion and expansion processes. In the reversion of sandy desertification, climate change was the dominant factor in the period of 1981 to 1990 and the reversed areas mainly induced by climate change including Mu Us sandy land and the transition zone between temperate steppe and temperate deciduous scrubs in north east of Ordos region; however, human activities controlled the reversed process during the period from 1991 to 2000 and the areas mainly induced by human activities distributed in all banners of Ordos region. In the expansion of sandy desertification, human activities were the dominant factor in the period of 1981 to 1990 and the expanded areas mainly included the regions around common boundary of Hanggin, Dalad Banners and Dongsheng City; however, climate change dominated the expansion of sandy desertification from 1991 to 2000, the expanded areas equably distributed in the whole of Ordos region except the south east of Otog Qian, Uxin and Jungar Banners.XU DuanYang KANG XiangWu LIU ZhiLi ZHUANG DaFang PAN JianJun 2009Science China Earth Sciences2009,52,6:19
石漠化生态恢复过程中土壤磷含量的比较研究(英文)显示文摘[Objective] The research aimed to study change law of phosphorus content of soil in karst rocky desertification region(KRD) during eco-restoration process such as Northwest Guangxi Province.[Method] The soil samples were collected from typical KRD in Pingguo County and Yizhou City. The determining quotas of different soil samples such as soil total phosphorus content and available phosphorus content were detected,in addition the soil total phosphorus content, available phosphorus content, urease activity, catalase activity and organic matter content in different soil samples were analyzed comparatively.[Result] Aspect, vegetation type and recovery time generated obviously influences on phosphorus contents in different soil samples. The concrete influence order was listed as follow: phosphorus content in soil of south slope was higher than that in soil of north slope;phosphorus content in soil where Zenia insignis Chun was planted was higher than that in soil of closed forest and that of soil where Dendrocalamus minor Var. amoen was planted, additionally, phosphorus increased with recovery time. Urease activity could be used as a monitoring index of soil fertility because it is related to the change of phosphorus content.[Conclusion] The soil of karst rocky desertification region in Northwest Guangxi Province could be recovered gradually if excessive human disturbance was stopped. If proper natural method of recovery promoted by human was taken, the recovery would reach a better result.覃勇荣 刘旭辉 曾忠良 周春梅 蓝崇钰 2008Agricultural Science & Technology2008,9,3:14
Tracking desertification on the Mongolian steppe through NDVI and field-survey data显示文摘Changing environmental and socio-economic conditions make land degradation,a major concern in Central and East Asia.Globally satellite imagery, particularly Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)data, has proved an effective tool for monitoring land cover change. This study examines 33 grassland water points using vegetation field studies and remote sensing techniques to track desertification on the Mongolian plateau.Findings established a significant correlation between same-year field observation(line transects)and NDVI data, enabling an historical land cover perspective to be developed from 1998 to 2006.Results show variable land cover patterns in Mongolia with a 16%decrease in plant density over the time period.Decline in cover identified by NDVI suggests degradation;however, continued annual fluctuation indicates desertificationirreversible land cover changehas not occurred.Further,in situ data documenting greater cover near water points implies livestock overgrazing is not causing degradation at water sources. In combination of the two research methodsremote sensing and field surveysstrengthen findings and provide an effective way to track desertification in dryland regions.Troy Sternberg Renchin Tsolmon Nicholas Middleton David Thomas 2011International Journal of Digital Earth2011,4,1:11
THE CAUSES AND DEVELOPMENTAL TREND OF DESERTIFICATION IN THE MIDDLE REACHES OF THE YARLUNG ZANGBO RIVER AND ITS TWO TRIBUTARIES IN XIZANG显示文摘The middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River and its two tributaries are an important development and construction region in Xizang(Tibet) in recent years, but the fast development of desertification has caused immense damages to its social and economic development, so the study on desertification in this region is significant. The paper studies the causes and development trend of desertification in this region through analysis of natural and human factors as well as their relationship. It can be concluded that desertification in the study area is one process which is accelerated and intensified by human activities on the basis of the slow natural desertification process. It is resulted from the dislocation of irrational and intensive human activities, fragile eec-environment and meagre natural resources, and tends to become more wide and severe.董光荣 董玉祥 李森 金炯 靳鹤龄 刘玉璋 1995Chinese Geographical Science1995,5,4:10
Sandy desertification in the north of China显示文摘With the economic and social development, desertification exerted increasingly pro-found influences on natural environment and social development and attracted widespread atten-tion of international communities, China, as one of the countries facing severe desertificationproblems, has witnessed some progress in understanding and combating the process of desertifi-cation through many years of hard work. Based on the experiences and research achievements, this paper briefly discusses the causes, developmental processes, damage assessment and con-trol mechanism of desertification in the north of China so as to provide some basic experiences forthe further study of desertification.王涛 朱震达 吴薇 2002Science China Earth Sciences2002,45,z1:9
Remote sensing parameterization of the processes of energy and water cycle over desertification areas显示文摘In order to understand the processes of land surface-atmosphere interaction over de-sertification area, it is indispensable to utilize of satellite remote sensing. Two scenes of LandsatTM were used to produce a set of maps of surface reflectance, MSAVI, vegetation coverage, sur-face temperature, net radiation, soil heat flux, sensible heat flux and latent heat flux. Statisticalanalysis based on these maps revealed some quantitative significant land surface characteristics.Future developments of the method are also discussed.马耀明 Tsukamoto Osamu Ishikawa Hirohiko 2002Science China Earth Sciences2002,45,z1:9

Developing stages and causes of desertification in the Mu Us sandland显示文摘Based on historical aerial photography of three periods and together with field investigation, the status of desertification development after the 1950s in the Mu Us sandland was analyzed, the difference of the desertification developing speed at two stages was compared, and its possible causes were explored. The results show that the developing speed of desertification from the late 1970s to the early 1990s is apparently slowed down, compared with that from the late 1950s to the late 1970s and there exists an obvious recovery trend at the second stage. The difference between the two stages accounts for severely over-reclaiming, over-grazing and unrestricted cutting during the first stage, which are the main causes of desertification development in the semi-arid steppe and arid desert steppe areas.Bo Wu Longjun Ci 1999Chinese Science Bulletin1999,44,9:6
Accuracy of space-for-time substitution for vegetation state prediction following shrub restoration显示文摘Aims:Space-for-time substitution(SFT)is often used for vegetation status estimation during the recovery process of deserts. However, the evaluated accuracy of SFT remains uncertain. An eight-year located observation was used to assess the validity of SFT for vegetation state prediction. Methods:This study analyzed a chronosequence of Caragana microphylla Lam.plantings using the located observation method to test the accuracy of SFT for vegetation state prediction in the mobile sand dunes of the Horqin Sandy Land in northeastern China from July 2005 to June 2013.Important Findings:According to SFT,simple vegetation parameters(density, coverage and biomass)were found to be unstable, while sophisticated veg-etation parameters(species diversity and evenness)were relatively stable across the experimental treatments during the study period.Conversely, both the simple and sophisticated parameters were found to be relatively stable when tested using the located obser-vation method.Furthermore, most simple vegetation parameters slightly increased, while sophisticated parameters slightly decreased after eight years of field observations.Thus,long-term restoration management facilitated improvements in the simple parameters, but may have adversely impacted the sophisticated parameters in the post-restoration community. Our results suggest that sophisticated vegetation parameter states can be predicted by SFT,while simple vegetation parameter states are not well predicted by SFT.in conclusion, located observations or other effective evaluation methods must be employed to offset the deficiency of the SFT method for the prediction of vegetation parameters.Renhui Miao Xueli Qiu Meixia Guo Ala Musa Deming Jiang 2018Journal of Plant Ecology2018,11,2:5
Development of land desertification in Bashang area in the past 20 years显示文摘Natural conditions in Bashang area are characterized by zonal transitions which are liable to be impacted by natural disasters and intensified human activities. The extremely fragile eco-environment is also liable to have desertification formed and developed. In the 18 years from 1978 to 1996, the desertified land area of Bashang within the scope of the map nearly doubled, a total increase of 2199.11 km2, averaging an increase of 122.17 km2 per year. Moreover, the seriously desertified area increases rapidly. Land desertification in Bashang is the combined result of natural factors and irrational human economic activities. Cultivated land expansion, population growth, and overgrazing aggrevate desertification development.Chen Zhi-qing Zhu Zhen-da 2001Journal of Geographical Sciences2001,11,4:5
Land degradation and management of red beds in China:Two case studies显示文摘Red beds cover approximately 9.5%of China, and are home to approximately 144 million people. In total,83%of these lands are distributed in humid regions making it an important part of research on red bed soil erosion in China in these areas. This paper presents the main types of land degradation in red bed landscapes and the status of current soil erosion in a typical red bed basin, the Nanxiong Basin located in the north of Guangdong Province,China, and establishes the connection between management strategies and regional economic development in humid red bed regions of China. The soil erosive modulus was calculated in the Nanxiong Basin by using RUSLE(The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation). The results of overlapping analyses demonstrated that appropriate measures, such as the Return Farmland to Forests initiative, should be taken at the junction of central red bed areas and mountainous areas in order to mitigate current soil erosion. Two examples are presented to demonstrate this:the tourism development in Mt.Danxiashan,a noted scenic mountainous area near Nanxiong Basin, and the land degradation mitigation in the Nanxiong Basin. Both examples promote local economic growth while simultaneously protecting the environment.A‘stakeholder'strategy is pursued at Mt.Danxiashan, which can help residents to understand their positive effects on the environment as well as increase their income. The second example,in Nanxiong City, showcases how local farmers became stakeholders by implementing contract responsibility and self-support systems for economic forests and terraced land in the 1980s.YAN Luo-bin Milica KASANIN-GRUBIN 2019Journal of Mountain Science2019,16,11:4

A long-term record(1995-2019)of the dynamics of land desertification in the middle reaches of Yarlung Zangbo River basin derived from Landsat data显示文摘Widespread desertification in the middle part of the Yarlung Zangbo River(YZR)basin is threatening the sustain-able development of this region. To capture this process,a method was proposed for large-scale desertification monitoring by using Landsat images from 1995 to 2019.The method used an integrated classification method combined with a hierarchical decision tree and nearest neighbor classifiers. The spatio-temporal dynamics of the desertification pattern were analyzed to assist in the detection of possible driving forces.Using validation samples collected from Google Earth high-resolution images and field investigations, the overall accuracy of the classification in 2019 was 92.3%with a Kappa coefficient of 0.84.The major results were:(1)total sandy land area in 2019 was 734.1 km^(2),which accounted for 3.7%of the study area, prominently distributed along the wide river valleys and inlets of tributaries with a strip and discontinuous pattern.Sandy land tends to be distributed in the southern aspect regions with lower elevations and that are closer to rivers;(2)sandy land areas showed two temporal stages:a gradual increase of 102.4 km^(2)from 1995 to 2015 and a large decrease of 106.8 km^(2)from 2015 to 2019;(3)newly increased sandy land was distributed in the YZR Valley, while the revegetation on sandy land occurred mainly in the Lhasa River basin and some regions in the YZR Valley;and(4)increased sandy land area of 142.1 km^(2)was mainly distributed in the southern band of the two rivers.Correspondingly, revegetation on sandy land was more effective on the northern banks of the river valleys. These findings provide guidance for implementing vegetation recovery on sandy lands and provide important insights for maintaining sustainable development.Qiqi Zhan Wei Zhao Mengjiao Yang Donghong Xiong 2021Geography and Sustainability2021,2,1:4
PRESENT STATUS AND CAUSE OF LAND DESERTIFICATION IN THE YARLUNG ZANGBO RIVER BASIN显示文摘The Yarlung Zangbo River basin is a spacial zone in the south of Xizang, the types, distribution and causes of desertified lands have special features. The type, area, distribution and damage of desertification land in the Yarlung Zangbo River basin are firstly analysed in detail by using latest investigation information. According to the classification criteria of desertified land types and grades, the desertified land in the Yarlung Zangbo River basin can be divided into three grades and five types: fixed sand (dune) land, semi bare sand and gravel land, semi fixed sand (dune) land, base sand and gravel land, and shifting sand (dune) land. The desertified lands in the basin are mainly distributed in the wide valley floor and tributary junction area. The main factors affecting desertification are fragile eco environment, climate warming and drying and over exploitation of land resources. The man made factors leading to desertification in the Yarlung Zangbo River basin are over cutting and over grazing, dominated by over grazing.董玉祥 李森 董光荣 1999Chinese Geographical Science1999,9,3:3
Desertification: China provides a solution to a global challenge显示文摘Desertification has been caused by various factors and is a major environmental problem and development bottleneck faced by the world. It is also a serious threat to ecological security and to sustainable economic and social development. As a stubborn world problem, focused on by the United Nations 2030 sustainable development goal 15.3, China aims to combat desertification by implementing the 'eight-column fourbeam' strategy, and also suggest the 'four-medicine'approach for global desertification governance. This includes the development of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification protocol, unified global compliance and compliance metrics; building a global observation network, and monitoring land changes based on remote sense; preparing the global natural desert(heritage) list, leaving the original deserts for future generations; initiating the global action of combating desertification, and striving to achieve a land degradationneutral world by 2030.Yingshuang BAO Leilei CHENG Yanfeng BAO Liu YANG Lina JIANG Chao LONG Zhe KONG Peng PENG Jun XIAO Qi LU 2017Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering2017,4,4:3
Numerical simulation of ae-olian sediment transport显示文摘A discrete element model (DEM) is developed for aeolian sediment transport in the scope of investigation of the dynamic behavior of grains, in which the motion of individual grain is considered while velocity distribution of wind is given according to bed forms. The above model has been used for simulating the phenomenon of 4000 grains blown by wind, resulting in ripples and saltating paths, which shows good agreements with experimental observations. The result is helpful for revealing the intrinsic mechanism of sand flow.Qicheng Sun Guangqian Wang 2001Chinese Science Bulletin2001,46,9:3
Human Causes of Aeolian Desertification in Northern China显示文摘Aeolian desertification has rapidly developed in the past 50 years in Northern China, covered an area of 0.386 million km2 by 2000,affected nearly 170 million population, and caused the direct and indirect economic loss of about $6.75(U.S.dollar) billion per year. Here we present several lines of evidence to demonstrate that human activities guided by policy shifts have been a major force to drive aeolian desertification via changes in land-use patterns and intensity. It is suggested that the desertification can be curbed or even reversed by adopting prevention and control measures with ecologically sound land-use practices in China.Tao Wang1*,Xian Xue1,Yiqi Luo2,3,Xuhui Zhou2,Bao Yang1,Wanqun Ta1,Wei Wu4,Lihua Zhou1,Qingwei Sun1,XunmingWang1,Halin Zhao1,Xueyong Zhao1 1.Key Laboratory of Desert and Desertification,Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Insti-tute,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Lanzhou Gansu 730000,China 2.Department of Botany and Microbiology,University of Oklahoma,Norman,Oklahoma 73019-0245,USA 3.School of Life Sciences,Fudan University,Shanghai 200433,China 4.Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing 100085,China 2008Research in Cold and Arid Regions2008,,1:3
Changes in plant species composition and diversity of alpine Kobresia (Kobresia pygmaea) steppe meadow at different stages of desertification in the North Tibetan plateau显示文摘The impacts of desertification on the vegetation composition, structure, and species diversity of alpine Kobresia steppe meadow were evaluated in an area of severe desertification in Anduo County, Tibet Autonomous Region, northern China. We investigated and analyzed the floristic features of communities at four different stages of desertification (slight desertification [SLD], moderate desertification [MD], severe desertification [SD], and very severe desertification [VSD]). The composition and structure of the alpine Kobresia steppe meadow at the SLD site differed significantly from that at the MD, SD, and VSD sites. Species that were more drought resistant and inedible by livestock were the dominant species at the SD site. No plants were found in the shifting dunes of the VSD site. Species diversity also decreased with increasing desertification. The SLD site had the largest mean number of species and individuals and the largest richness index; the MD grassland had the largest Shannon-Wiener index and evenness index, but the smallest Simpson's index. The vegetation cover declined from 91.8% to 34.8% as desertification increased from SLD to SD, and reached 0% in VSD areas with shifting dunes.XingHu Wei 1*, Ping Yang 2, Sen Li 1, YuXiang Dong 3, ChunLai Zhang 41. 20The causes and processes responsible for rocky desertification in karst areas of southern China显示文摘The karst region of southern China is a fragile ecological zone with widespread rocky desertification. This paper describes the rocky desertification occurring in this region in terms of both natural and anthropogenic factors. During geological time periods, the region's changing environment governed the natural rocky desertification processes, whereas during historical and modern times, anthropogenic processes have been superimposed on these natural processes. Human activities have accelerated and exacerbated rocky desertification. The period from the beginning to the middle of the Qing dynasty was an important transitional period in which human activities began to exert a particularly strong influence on rocky desertification. Since then, the effect of anthropogenic factors has increasingly exceeded the effect of natural factors. The rocky desertification process in southern China's karst region combines surface ecological processes (including vegetation degradation and loss, soil erosion, surface water loss, and bedrock solution) with a reduction of the land's biological productivity, leading to degradation that produces rocky desert. Controlling rocky desertification requires comprehensive development of sustainable agriculture and economic development that provides employment alternatives to agriculture and thereby promotes the rehabilitation of rocky desertified land.Sen Li 1,2*, XingHu Wei 1, JinGuo Huang 1, XiZhi Wang 1, GuanYao Lu 1, HuiXia Li 11.
