1Body armour-New materials, new systems显示文摘This is a very timely review of body armour materials and systems since new test standards are currently being written, or reviewed, and new, innovative products released. Of greatest importance, however, is the recent evolution, and maturity, of the Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene fibres enabling a completely new style of system to evolve e a stackable system of Hard Armour Plates. The science of body armour materials is quickly reviewed with emphasis upon current understanding of relevant energy-absorbing mechanisms in fibres, fabrics, polymeric laminates and ceramics. The trend in ongoing developments in ballistic fibres is then reviewed, analysed and future projections offered. Weaknesses in some of the ceramic grades are highlighted as is the value of using cladding materials to improve the robustness, and multi-strike performance, of Hard Armour Plates. Finally, with the drive for lighter, and therefore smaller, soft armour systems for military personnel the challenges for armour designers are reported, and the importance of the relative size of the Hard Armour Plate to the Soft Armour Insert is strongly emphasised.Ian G.Crouch 2019Defence Technology(防务技术)2019,15,3:19
2A CATALOGUE OF THE SEAGRASSES OF CHINA显示文摘In this overall survey of the seagrasses of China 15 species are listed, eight of which are recorded for the first time. The Potamogetonaceae (subfamilies Zosteroideae and Cymodoceoideae) are represented by 10 species, and the Hydrocharitaceae (subfamilies Vallisnerioideae, Thalassioideae and Halophiloideae)by 5 species. Halophila ovalis (R.Br.) Hook, f. is represented by 2 subspecies. 3Alkali and Silane Treatments towards Exemplary Mechanical Properties of Kenaf and Pineapple Leaf Fibre-reinforced Composites显示文摘Following the contemporary research trend of exploring the potential of eco-friendly natural fibres,this work studies the effects of alkali and silane treatments,with varying concentrations,on the mechanical characterization of composites reinforced with kenaf and pineapple leaf fibre(PALF).Kenaf-and PALF-based composites were fabricated through the heat compression method.Their mechanical characterization was then performed to evaluate the tensile,flexural and impact properties.The findings concluded that chemical treatments indeed enhanced the mechanical properties of composite materials.5%NaOH and 3%silane treatments can respectively provide the optimum mechanical properties to the kenaf fibre and PALF reinforced composites.Chemical treatment results evidenced that silane-treated composites exhibit higher mechanical properties compared to the NaOH-treated composites.When comparing the mechanical properties of kenaf-and PALF-reinforced polypropylene composites,the overall results show that composites based on PALF have superior mechanical properties.Ng Lin Feng Sivakumar Dhar Malingam Nadlene Razali Sivarao Subramonian 2020Journal of Bionic Engineering2020,17,2:3
4Comparative tree-ring anatomy of Fraxinus excelsior with Chalara dieback显示文摘We tested the hypothesis that the biometrical characters of wood elements in ash trees(Fraxinus excelsior L.) become modified in response to the progression of disease caused by Chalara fraxinea. Anatomical analyses were performed on wood samples collected at breast height from the trunks of groups of ash trees which contained healthy, weakened and dead trees. We measured(1) treering width,(2) earlywood vessel diameter,(3) earlywood vessel element length,(4) fibre length,(5) fibre diameter,(6) fibre lumen diameter, and(7) fibre wall thickness. We showed that tree-ring width diminished in all analysed groups during disease progression. However, the greatest suppression of growth was observed in dead trees. In both weakened and dead ash trees, the reduction in tree-ring width was accompanied by diminished vessel diameter in the earlywood of the outermost annual rings. The annual rings of dead trees had shorter fibres having greater lumen diameter and thinner cell walls. Consequently, water conduction in the sapwood of dead ash trees was less efficient owing to reduced vessel diameter, and this seems to be one of the greatest disease-induced morphological modifications. 7Punching shear behavior of recycled aggregate concrete slabs with and without steel fibres显示文摘A study on the punching shear behavior of 8 slabs with recycled aggregate concrete(RAC)was carried out.The two main factors considered were the recycled coarse aggregate(RCA)replacement percentage and the steel fibre volumetric ratio.The failure pattern,load-displacement curves,energy consumption,and the punching shear capacity of the slabs were intensively investigated.It was concluded that the punching shear capacity,ductility and energy consumption decreased with the increase of RCA replacement percentage.Research findings indicated that the incorporation of steel fibres could not only improve the energy dissipation capacity and the punching shear capacity of the slab,but also effectively improve the integrity of the slab tension surface and thereby changing the trend from typical punching failure pattern to bending-punching failure pattern.On the basis of the test,the punching shear capacity formula of RAC slabs with and without steel fibres was proposed and discussed.Jianzhuang XIAO Wan WANG Zhengjiu ZHOU Mathews M.TAWANA 2019Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering2019,13,3:1

9Additive manufacturing of mechanical testing samples based on virgin poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and PLA/wood fibre composites显示文摘3D printing in additive manufacturing is con-sidered as one of key technologies to the future high-pre-cision manufacturing in order to benefit diverse industriesin building construction, product development, biomedicalinnovation, etc. The increasing applications of 3D printedcomponents depend primarily on their significant merits ofreduced weight, minimum used materials, high precisionand shorter production time. Furthermore, it is very crucialthat such 3D printed components can maintain the same oreven better material performance and product quality asthose achieved by conventional manufacturing methods.This study successfully fabricated 3D printed mechanicaltesting samples of PLA and PLA/wood fibre composites.3D printing parameters including infill density, layer heightand the number of shells were investigated via design ofexperiments (DOE), among which the number of shells wasdetermined as the most significant factor for maximisingtensile strengths of PLA samples. Further, DoE workevaluated the effect of material type (i.e., neat PLA andPLA/wood fibres) and the number of shells on tensile,flexural and impact strengths of material samples. It issuggested that material type is the only predominant factorfor maximising all mechanical strengths, which howeverare consistently lower for PLA/wood fibre compositeswhen compared with those of neat PLA. 18THE IMPACT PROPERTIES OF HYBRID COMPOSITES显示文摘In this paper an experimental investigation on the impact behaviour of hybrid composites is conducted by instrumental Charpy impact test. The variation of impact strength and impact toughness index of C/K and C/G hybrid composites of different matrices with hybrid ratio and interface number is revealed. The dynamic hybrid effect is also investigated from different aspects. Meanwhile, the estimating model for impact strength is established and the estimated values are in good agreement with experimented ones. The hybrid effect coefficients based on different definitions are organically related by the model. 19A Reevaluation of the Critical Membrane Potential of the Effective Refractory Period in Guinea Pig Ventricular Fibres显示文摘The traditional critical membrane potential (CMP), -55—-60mV, which corresponds to effective refractory period (ERP), was anew investigated in guinea pig ventricular muscle fibres. The electrical and contractile responses to the stimulus during repolarization of action potential (AP), particularly from+10 to -60 mV, were observed. One third of 35 tested cells displayed testing action potential (TAP) and local response at≥-54 mV when they were stimulated by testing pulses in 37℃ normal Tyrode’s solution. Potential level of TAP which occurred earliest was at -30 mV and that of local response which appeared earliest was at 0 mV during repolarization among 95 systematic tests. Most of the TAPs belonged to the slow response potential type. The ratio of TAP evoked at ≥-54 mV initial membrane potential (IMP) was as high as 86% when the experiment was carried out in 37℃ 1.5 mmol KC1/L Tyrode’s solution. 20AN INVESTIGATION OF THE RELATION BETWEEN COTTON FIBRE PROPERTIES AND YARN QUALITY BY USING HIGH VOLUME INSTRUMENT(HVI)SYSTEM显示文摘The objective of this paper is to establish reliable prediction equations relating cotton fibreproperties measured by HVI system and yarn quality,A useful statistical method is adopted for de-veloping a multiple regression model interpreting the relation between the data of Spinlab HVIfibre properties and quality parameters of yarn STQ (Strength Tex Quotient).The percent relativecontribution of a fibre property with respect of STQ is also assessed.The results show that the totalcontribution of the HVI measured fibre properties can account for 77.4% of known variation ofyarn STQ.The main feature of the approach is its flexibility in accommodating all fibre properties.The examination of regression equation showed that it could be well applied to predict STQ ofyarns spun from the same spinning system,but,for different spinning systems and also for yarns ofdifferent linear density,modification of the equation would be needed.M.A.Zaman 储才元 严灏景 1993Journal of China Textile University(English Edition)1993,10,2:0
