40-Year(1978–2017) human settlement changes in China reflected by impervious surfaces from satellite remote sensing显示文摘Impervious surfaces are the most significant feature of human settlements. Timely, accurate, and frequent information on impervious surfaces is critical in both social-economic and natural environment applications. Over the past 40 years, impervious surface areas in China have grown rapidly. However, annual maps of impervious areas in China with high spatial details do not exist during this period. In this paper, we made use of reliable impervious surface mapping algorithms that we published before and the Google Earth Engine(GEE) platform to address this data gap. With available data in GEE, we were able to map impervious surfaces over the entire country circa 1978, and during 1985–2017 at an annual frequency. The 1978 data were at 60-m resolution, while the 1985–2017 data were in 30-m resolution. For the 30-m resolution data, we evaluated the accuracies for 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and2015. Overall accuracies reached more than 90%. Our results indicate that the growth of impervious surface in China was not only fast but also considerably exceeding the per capita impervious surface area in developed countries like Japan. The 40-year continuous and consistent impervious surface distribution data in China would generate widespread interests in the research and policy-making community. | 2 | Land use changes and their relations with carbon cycles over the past 300 a in China显示文摘Land use and land cover in China have changed greatly during the past 300 a, indicated by the rapid abrupt decrease of forest land area and the rapid increase of cropland area, which can affect terrestrial carbon cycle greatly. The first-hand materials are used to analyze main characteristics for land use and land cover changes in China during the study period. The following conclusions can be drawn from this study. The cropland area in China kept increasing from 60.78×106 hm2 in 1661 to 96.09×106 hm2 in 1998. Correspondingly, the forest land area decreased from 248.13×106 hm2 in 1700 to 109.01×106 hm2 in 1949. Affected by such changes, the terrestrial ecosystem carbon storage decreased in the mean time. Car-bon lost from land use and land cover changes mainly consist of the loss from vegetation biomass and soil. In the past 300 a, about 3.70 PgC was lost from vegetation biomass, and emissions from soil ranged from 0.80 to 5.84 PgC. The moderate evaluation of soil losses was 2.48 PgC. The total loss from vegetation and soil was between 4.50 and 9.54 PgC. The moderate and optimum evaluation was 6.18 PgC. Such carbon losses distribution varied spatially from region to region. Carbon lost more significantly in Northeast China and Southwest China than in other regions, because losses of forest land in these two regions were far greater than in the other regions during the past 300 a. And losses of carbon in the other regions were also definite, such as Inner Mongolia, the western part of South China, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. But the carbon lost very little from the traditional agricultural regions in China, such as North China and East China. Studies on the relationship between land use and land cover change and carbon cycle in China show that the land use activities, especially those related to agriculture and forest management, began to affect terrestrial carbon storage positively in recent years. | GE QuanSheng DAI JunHu HE FanNeng PAN Yuan WANG MengMai | 2008 | Science China Earth Sciences2008,51,6: | 30
Cropland cover change in Northeast China during the past 300 years显示文摘Land use/cover change induced by human activities has emerged as a 'global' phenomenon with Earth system consequences. Northeast China is an area where the largest land cultivation activities by migrants have happened in China during the past 300 years. In this paper, methods including documentary data calibration and multi-sourced data conversion model are used to reconstruct historical cropland cover change in Northeast China during the past 300 years. It is concluded that human beings have remarkably changed the natural landscape of the region by land cultivation in the past 300 years. Cropland area has increased almost exponentially during the past 300 years, especially during the past 100 years when the ratio of cropland cover changed from 10% to 20%. Until the middle of the 19th century, the agricultural area was still mainly restricted in Liaoning Province. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, dramatic changes took place when the northern boundary of cultivation had extended to the middle of Heilongjiang Province. During the 20th century, three agricultural regions with high ratio of cropland cover were formed after the two phases of spatial expansion of cropland area in 1900s—1930s and 1950s—1980s. Since 1930s—1940s, the expansion of new cultivated area have invaded the forest lands especially in Jilin and Heilongjiang Provinces. | YE Yu FANG XiuQi REN YuYu ZHANG XueZhen CHEN Li | 2009 | Science China Earth Sciences2009,52,8: | 21
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES ON LAND USE/COVER CHANGE IN THE PAST TEN YEARS IN CHINA USING SPACE TECHNOLOGY显示文摘Land use/cover change, which in China is characterized by urbanization resulting in a decrease in arable land in the east along with a large area of grassland being cultivated in the west, has been accelerated by rapid economic development in the last years. All of the above changes will affect sustainable development in the next century. The Chinese Academy of Sciences is conducting a study of land use/cover change over the last ten years based on the integration of remote sensing and GIS technology to establish a multitemporal database covering all of China. Fundamental data for land use/cover for the year 1996 has already been developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In order to reconstruct fundamental land use/cover data for the year 1986, a central data processing and analyzing system and a regional data acquisition, processing and analyzing system have been established and are joined together as a network. After the 1986 database is established, the comparative research on the reduction in arable land, urbanization, desertification, changes in forest and grassland, and lake and wetland land use/cover change will be carried out. In addition, a transect for a key regional comparative study was selected along the Changjiang (Yangtze) River. The driving forces of these changes also will be extracted. The result of this study will be not only make a contribution to global land use/cover change research, but will also support decision making for sustainable national development. | 庄大方 刘纪远 刘明亮 | 1999 | Chinese Geographical Science1999,9,4: | 10
Effect of photo-biodegradation and biodegradation on the biogeochemical cycling of dissolved organic matter across diverse surface water bodies显示文摘The objective of this research was to quantify the temporal variation of dissolved organic matter(DOM) in five distinct waterbodies in watersheds with diverse types of land use and land cover in the presence and absence of sunlight. The water bodies were an agricultural pond, a lake in a forested watershed, a man-made reservoir, an estuary, and a bay. Two sets of samples were prepared by dispensing unfiltered samples into filtered samples in 1:10 ratio(V/V). The first set was exposed to sunlight(10 hr per day for 30 days) for examining the combined effect of photo-biodegradation, while the second set was stored in dark for examining biodegradation alone. Spectroscopic measurements in tandem with multivariate statistics were used to interpret DOM lability and composition. The results suggest that the agricultural pond behaved differently compared to other study locations during degradation experiments due to the presence of higher amount of microbial humic-like and protein-like components derived from microbial/anthropogenic sources. For all samples, a larger decrease in dissolved organic carbon(DOC) concentration(10.12% ±9.81% for photo-biodegradation and 6.65% ± 2.83% for biodegradation) and rapid transformation of DOM components(i.e., terrestrial humic-like components into microbial humic and protein-like components) were observed during photo-biodegradation experiments. Results suggest that sunlight facilitated DOM biodegradation, resulting in simpler recalcitrant molecules regardless of original composition. Overall, it was found that combined effects of light and bacteria are more efficient than bacterial effects alone in remineralizing and altering DOM, which highlights the crucial importance of sunlight in transforming aquatic DOM. | M.S.Sankar Padmanava Dash Shatrughan Singh YueHan Lu ANDrew E.Mercer Shuo Chen | 2019 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2019,31,3: | 9
Geographical Information System-Based Assessment of Ecological Security in Changbai Mountain Region显示文摘Ecological security defined as the creation of a condition where the physical surroundings of a community provide for the needs of its inhabitants without diminishing its natural stock, which is important for regional security and social stability. In recent years, land use patterns in the Changbai Mountain region have changed significantly with intensive human activities, and consequently led to increasing problems in regional ecological security.Based on the Pressure-State-Impact-Response(PSIR) model and the mathematical method of catastrophe progression supported by geographical information system(GIS),the ecological security situation of the study area under land use and cover change(LUCC) was evaluated. The results indicated that the ecological security in Changbai Mountain region varied nonlinearly, which got better from 1990 to 2000 but became worse from 2000 to 2007,the ecological security levels in Changbai Mountain region were mainly medium and medium to low during the past 17 years, with higher values of Ecological Security Index(ESI) in the central region and lower values in the east and west, the ecological security situation was more serious in the settlements and river valleys, where the LUCC was most remarkable. | LU Xing-chang ZHANG Ji-quan LI Xiao-zhen | 2014 | Journal of Mountain Science2014,11,1: | 7
Analysis of spatio-temporal pattern and driving force of land cover change using multi-temporal remote sensing images显示文摘Landuse and land cover change is regarded as a good indicator that represents the impact of human activities on earth’s environment. When the large collection of multi-temporal satellite images has become available,it is possible to study a long-term historical process of land cover change. This study aims to investigate the spatio-temporal pattern and driving force of land cover change in the Pearl River Delta region in southern China, where the rapid development has been witnessed since 1980s.The fast economic growth has been associated with an accelerated expansion of urban landuse, which has been recorded by historical remote sensing images. This paper reports the method and outcome of the research that attempts to model spatio-temporal pattern of land cover change using multi-temporal satellite images. The classified satellite images were compared to detect the change from various landuse types to built-up areas. The trajectories of land cover change have then been established based on the time-series of the classified land cover classes. The correlation between the expansion of built-up areas and selected economic data has also been analysed for better understanding on the driving force of the rapid urbanisation process. The result shows that, since early 1990s,the dominant trend of land cover change has been from farmland to urban landuse. The relationship between economic growth indicator(measured by GDP)and built-up area can well fit into a linear regression model with correlation coefficients greater than 0.9.It is quite clear that cities or towns have been sprawling in general, demonstrating two growth models that were closely related to the economic development stages. | ZHOU QiMing & SUN Bo Department of Geography,Hong Kong Baptist University,Hong Kong,China | 2010 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,S1: | 6
Spatial patterns and driving forces of land change in Tibetan-inhabited Three Rivers Headwaters region, China显示文摘The Three Rivers Headwaters Region(TRHR) plays a key role in regulating water supply and climate of East Asia. A comprehensive understanding of the processes and driving forces of the long-term land use dynamics of the TRHR is needed to guide sustainable land resource management and regional ecological conservation strategies. This study examined long-term land change patterns in the TRHR and investigated the driving forces of the change. First, Landsat TM/ETM+ images covering TRHR of four time points from 1987 to 2016 were used to derive land use patterns, and statistical metrics were applied to quantify the spatial and temporal changes. Second, Principal Component Analysis and correlation analysis were employed to analyze environmental and social-economic data to identify the driving forces of land use change. Third, potential influences of the religion of Tibetan Buddhism on land use change were explored using GIS analysis, questionnaire survey and field observation. Results showed that areas of barren land, agricultural land, and built-up land largely increased, while areas of grassland and forest greatly decreased, with the highest change rate occurring in the most recent decade of analysis(from 2007 to 2016). Among the three headwater regions, the Yellow River Headwater Region showed an overall higher changing speed than the other two headwater regions. The regional driving forces of change in TRHR includedsocial-economic development, climatic condition, pressure of population growth, and environmental protection activities. It was also found that Tibetan Buddhism can help slow down the changes caused by human activities. | YU Yao GUO Zhou WANG Yi-Chen | 2019 | Journal of Mountain Science2019,16,1: | 5
Impacts of Regional-Scale Land Use/Land Cover Change on Diurnal Temperature Range显示文摘The NCAR Community Atmosphere Model(CAM4.0)was used to investigate the climate efects of land use/land cover change(LUCC).Two simulations, one with potential land cover without significant human intervention and the other with current land use, were conducted. Results show that the impacts of LUCC on diurnal temperature range(DTR)are more significant than on mean surface air temperature. The global average annual DTR change due to LUCC is–0.1℃,which is three times as large as the mean temperature change.LUCC influences regional DTR as simulated by the model. In the mid-latitudes,LUCC leads to a decrease in DTR,which is mainly caused by the reduction in daily maximum temperature. However, there are some diferences in the low latitudes. The reduction in DTR in East Asia is mainly the result of the decrease in daily maximum temperature, while in India, the decrease in DTR is due to the increase in daily minimum temperature. In general, the LUCC significantly controls the DTR change through the changes in canopy evaporation and transpiration. | HUA Wen-Jian CHEN Hai-Shan | 2013 | Advances in Climate Change Research2013,4,3: | 5
Advances in urban information extraction from high-resolution remote sensing imagery显示文摘The study of urban area is one of the hottest research topics in the field of remote sensing. With the accumulation of high-resolution(HR) remote sensing data and emerging of new satellite sensors, HR observation of urban areas has become increasingly possible, which provides us with more elaborate urban information. However, the strong heterogeneity in the spectral and spatial domain of HR imagery brings great challenges to urban remote sensing. In recent years, numerous approaches were proposed to deal with HR image interpretation over complex urban scenes, including a series of features from low level to high level, as well as state-of-the-art methods depicting not only the urban extent, but also the intra-urban variations. In this paper, we aim to summarize the major advances in HR urban remote sensing from the aspects of feature representation and information extraction. Moreover, the future trends are discussed from the perspectives of methodology, urban structure and pattern characterization, big data challenge, and global mapping. | Jianya GONG Chun LIU Xin HUANG | 2020 | Science China Earth Sciences2020,63,4: | 4
Forest carbon budgets in Southeast Asia following harvesting and land cover change显示文摘Terrestrial ecosystems play an important role in the global carbon (C)cycle. Tropical forests in Southeast Asia are constantly changing as a result of harvesting and conversion to other land cover. As a result of these changes, research on C budgets of forest ecosystems has intensified in the region over thelast few years. This paper reviews and synthesizes the available information. Natural forests in SE Asia typically contain a high C density (up to 500 Mg/ha). Logging activities are responsible for at least 50% decline in forest C density.Complete deforestation (conversion from forest to grassland or annual crops) results in C density of less than 40 Mg/ha. Conversion to tree plantations and other woody perennial crops also reduces C density to less than 50% of the originalC forest stocks. While much information has been generated recently, there are still large gaps of information on C budgets of tropical forests and its conversion to other land uses in SE Asia. There is therefore a need to intensify research in this area. | Rodel D. Lasco | 2002 | Science China(Life Sciences)2002,45,z1: | 4
Simulation of urban expansion based on cellular automata and maximum entropy model显示文摘Urban expansion is a hot topic in land use/land cover change(LUCC)researches. In this paper, maximum entropy model and cellular automata(CA)model are coupled into a new CA model(Maxent-CA)for urban expansion. This model can help to obtain transition rules from single-period dataset. Moreover,it can be constructed and calibrated easily with several steps.Firstly,Maxent-CA model was built by using remote sensing data of China in 2000(basic data)and spatial variables(such as population density and Euclidean distance to cities).Secondly, the proposed model was calibrated by analyzing training samples, neighborhood structure and spatial scale. Finally, this model was verified by comparing logistic regression CA model and their simulation results.Experiments showed that suitable sampling ratio(sampling ratio equals the proportion of urban land in the whole region)and von Neumann neighborhood structure will help to yield better results.Spatial structure of simulation results becomes simple as spatial resolution decreases.Besides, simulation accuracy is significantly affected by spatial resolution.Compared to simulation results of logistic regression CA model,Maxent-CA model can avoid clusters phenomenon and obtain better results matching actual situation. It is found that the proposed model performs well in simulating urban expansion of China. It will be helpful for simulating even larger study area in the background of global environment changes. | Yihan ZHANG Xiaoping LIU Guangliang CHEN Guohua HU | 2020 | Science China Earth Sciences2020,63,5: | 3
Land use and land cover changes in small Carpathian catchments between the mid-19^th and early 21^st centuries and their record on the land surface显示文摘Land use and land cover(LULC) changes and their impact on the mountain environment were studied in six catchments(~10 km^2 each) in the Polish Western Carpathians from the mid-19^(th) century to the early 21^(st) century. The analysis of cadastral and orthophoto maps indicates that during the investigated period, the forest area increased, quantified by an annual change index(Annch), between +0.12% to +0.27%, with a decrease of arable land index to –0.45% and –2.28% in the analysed catchments. LULC changes were accompanied by a continuous increase in settlement developments(residential and farming houses) by 50%-140% as well as significant changes related to their spatial distribution. Abandonment of arable land and forest succession have resulted in the geomorphological transformation of hillslopes, which predominantly includes a decrease in used road density, their transformation to road cuts and gorges. Overpopulation and the domination agriculture in the past caused the expansion of unpaved roads density and then the fragmentation of hillslopes, as well as the development of agricultural terraces. | Rafal KROCZAK Joanna FIDELUS-ORZECHOWSKA Anna BUCALA-HRABIA Tomasz BRYNDAL | 2018 | Journal of Mountain Science2018,15,12: | 3
七套土地覆被数据在羌塘高原的精度评价(英文)显示文摘We analyzed the spatial local accuracy of land cover (LC) datasets for the Qiangtang Plateau,High Asia, incorporating 923 field sampling points and seven LC compilations including the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme Data and Information System (IGBPDIS),Global Land cover mapping at 30 m resolution (GlobeLand30),MODIS Land Cover Type product (MCD12Q1),Climate Change Initiative Land Cover (CCI-LC),Global Land Cover 2000 (GLC2000),University of Maryland (UMD),and GlobCover 2009 (Glob- Cover). We initially compared resultant similarities and differences in both area and spatial patterns and analyzed inherent relationships with data sources. We then applied a geographically weighted regression (GWR) approach to predict local accuracy variation. The results of this study reveal that distinct differences, even inverse time series trends,in LC data between CCI-LC and MCD12Q1 were present between 2001 and 2015,with the exception of category areal discordance between the seven datasets. We also show a series of evident discrepancies amongst the LC datasets sampled here in terms of spatial patterns, that is,high spatial congruence is mainly seen in the homogeneous southeastern region of the study area while a low degree of spatial congruence is widely distributed across heterogeneous northwestern and northeastern regions. The overall combined spatial accuracy of the seven LC datasets considered here is less than 70%,and the GlobeLand30 and CCI-LC datasets exhibit higher local accuracy than their counterparts, yielding maximum overall accuracy (OA) values of 77.39% and 61.43%,respectively.Finally,5.63% of this area is characterized by both high assessment and accuracy (HH) values, mainly located in central and eastern regions of the Qiangtang Plateau, while most low accuracy regions are found in northern, northeastern, and western regions. | 刘琼欢 张镱锂 刘林山 李兰晖 祁威 | 2019 | Journal of Geographical Sciences2019,29,11: | 3
Novel fuzzy uncertainty modeling for land cover classification based on clustering analysis显示文摘It is well known that there is a degree of fuzzy uncertainty in land cover classification using remote sensing (RS) images. In this article, we propose a novel fuzzy uncertainty modeling algorithm for representing the features of land cover patterns, and present an adaptive interval type-2 fuzzy clustering method. The proposed fuzzy uncertainty modeling method is performed in two main phases. First, the segmentation units of the input multi-spectral RS image data are subjected to objectbased interval-valued symbolic modeling. As a result, features for each land cover type are represented in the form of an intervalvalued symbolic vector, which describes the intra-class uncertainty better than the source data and improves the separability between different classes. Second, interval type-2 fuzzy sets are generated for each cluster based on the distance metric of the interval-valued vectors. This step characterizes the inter-class high-order fuzzy uncertainty and improves the classification accuracy. To demonstrate the advantages and effectiveness of the proposed approach, extensive experiments are conducted on two multispectral RS image datasets from regions with complex land cover characteristics, and the results are compared with those given by well-known fuzzy and conventional clustering algorithms. | Hui HE Haihua XING Dan HU Xianchuan YU | 2019 | Science China Earth Sciences2019,62,2: | 2
Spatial pattern of land cover change in China's semiarid environment显示文摘This study seeks a routine to quantify spatial pattern of land cover changes in semiarid environment of China based on post-classification comparison method. The method consists of three major steps: (1) the image classification and unification of classified results based on two-level land cover classification themes, (2) the establishment of land cover change classes based on an unification land cover classification theme, (3) the reclassification and mapping of land cover change classes with three overall classes including no-change, gain and loss based on the unification land cover class. This method was applied to detect the spatial pattern of land cover changes in Yinchuan Plain, one of famous irrigation agricultural zones of the Yellow River, China. The results showed the land cover had undergone a remarkable change from 1991 to 2002 in the study area (the changed area was over 30%). Rapid increase of cropland (12.5%), built-up area (131.4%) and rapid decrease of bare ground (51.7%) were alarming. The spatial pattern of land cover changes showed clear regional difference in the study area and was clearly related to human activities or natural factors. Thus, it obtained a better understanding of the human impact on the fragile ecosystem of China's semiarid environment. | BaoLin LI1 and QiMing ZHOU2 1 State Key Laboratory of Environment and Resources Information System, Institute of Geographical Sciences and Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100101, China 2 Department of Geography, Hong Kong Baptist University, Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong, China | 2009 | Journal of Arid Land2009,1,1: | 2
Land use and land cover classification using Chinese GF-2 multispectral data in a region of the North China Plain显示文摘The newly launched GF-2 satellite is now the most advanced civil satellite in China to collect high spatial resolution remote sensing data. This study investigated the capability and strategy of GF?2 multispectral data for land use and land cover (LULC) classification in a region of the North China Plain. The pixel-based and object-based classifications using maximum likelihood (MLC) and support vector machine (SVM) classifiers were evaluated to determine the classification strategy that was suitable for GF?2 multispectral data. The validation results indicated that GF-2 multispectral data achieved satisfactory LULC classification performance, and object-based classification using the SVM classifier achieved the best classification accuracy with an overall classification accuracy of 94.33% and kappa coefficient of 0.911.Therefore,considering the LULC classification performance and data characteristics,GF-2 satellite data could serve as a valuable and reliable high-resolution data source for land surface monitoring.Future works should focus on improving LULC classification accuracy by exploring more classification features and exploring the potential applications of GF-2 data in related applications. | Kun JIA Jingcan LIU Yixuan TU Qiangzi LI Zhiwei SUN Xiangqin WEI Yunjun YAO Xiaotong ZHANG | 2019 | Frontiers of Earth Science2019,13,2: | 2

Dynamic Analysis of Land Cover in Four-Lake Area of Jianghan Plain Based on MODIS-EVI Time Series Data显示文摘According to the time series data of Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) in Four-Lake Area of Jianghan Plain during the period 2001-2007, we use Harmonic Analysis of Time Series (HANTS) to conduct cloud removing processing, and calculate the sum of square N of time series value of each pixel. The pixels with N>0.25 are classified as vegetation coverage area; the pixels with N<0.25 are classified as non-vegetation coverage area. As to vegetation coverage area, we use the second-order difference method to judge the frequency of peak value of EVI time series data. Within one year, the vegetation coverage area with peak value happening 1 time is woodland and grassland; the vegetation coverage area with peak value happening 2 times is arable land; the vegetation coverage area with peak value happening 3 times or more is vegetable land. Supervised classification method is used to identify cities, towns, water area in non-vegetation coverage area and woodland, grassland in vegetation coverage area. We draw the land cover classification diagram of Four-Lake Area in the period 2001-2007. In comparison with the land cover classification based on multitemporal ETM data in 2001, the difference of area of arable land is within 10%. Using MODIS-EVI data, we can rapidly and efficiently conduct land cover classification with low cost. The dynamic analysis results indicate that the area of arable land is in the process of declining, while the area of other cover types shows an increasing trend. | JIN Wei-bin XUE Lian XIONG Qin-xue | 2012 | Asian Agricultural Research2012,4,12: | 1
