1Determination of 50% endpoint titer using a simple formula显示文摘Two commonly used methods for calculating 50% endpoint using serial dilutions are Spearman-Karber method and Reed and Muench method. To understand/apply the above formulas, moderate statistical/mathematical skills are necessary. In this paper, a simple formula/method for calculating 50% endpoints has been proposed. The formula yields essentially similar results as those of the SpearmanKarber method. 3Hawk mimicry does not reduce attacks of cuckoos by highly aggressive hosts显示文摘Background: Resemblance to raptors such as hawks(Accipiter spp.) is considered to be an adaptive strategy of cuckoos(Cuculus spp.), which has evolved to protect cuckoos against host attacks. However, the effectiveness of the mimicry remains controversial, and is not yet fully studied for highly aggressive hosts.Methods: We evaluated the effectiveness of sparrowhawk(Accipiter nisus) mimicry by common cuckoos(Cuculus canorus) in oriental reed warblers(Acrocephaus orientalis), which are highly aggressive hosts. Using a both the single and the paired dummy experiment, defense behaviors and attack intensities of oriental reed warblers against common cuckoos, sparrowhawks and oriental turtle doves(Streptopelia orientalis) were assessed.Results: Oriental reed warblers exhibit strong nest defense behaviors, and such behaviors do not change with breeding stage(i.e., egg stage and nestling stage). Furthermore, assistance from conspecific helpers may increase attack intensities. However, they were deterred from mobbing overall by the presence of the hawk.Conclusions: Oriental reed warblers are able to distinguish cuckoos from harmless doves. 5PcTGD,a highly expressed gene in stem,is related to water stress in reed (Phragmites communis Trin.)显示文摘To compare differential gene expression among three ecotypes of reed (Phragmites communis Trin.), dune reed (DR), heavy-salt meadow reed (HSR) and light-salt meadow reed (LSR), mRNA transcripts were displayed by cDNA-AFLP (amplified fragment length polymorphisms). The result revealed that a relatively small number of genes are likely involved in adaptations of DR and HSR to stresses. A full-length cDNA encoding dTDP-D-glucose dehydratase gene (PcTGD) was subsequently cloned from DR. Northern blot analysis showed that it is highly expressed in stem as well as rhizoma of the three ecotypes. However, its expression in DR stem was much higher than that of the other two ecotypes. 6Experimental research on physical and mechanical parameters of matured bottom stalk of the reed for harvester design显示文摘The compressing,stretching,bending,and shearing stress of reed stalk growing in the Yangtze River region were investigated by using a computer-controlled electronic universal testing machine.The results were as follows:the average maximum values of the stress resistance intensity,pulling resistance intensity,the average of maximum bending resistance intensity,and shearing resistance intensity were 22 MPa,152 MPa,118 MPa and 26 MPa,respectively,whereas the equivalent values of the modulus of elasticity were 45 MPa,321 MPa,77 MPa and 286 MPa,respectively.The stalk of reed is a kind of anisotropic material and it is different from Arundo donax L.,ramie and wheat.Thus,the traditional agricultural machine for cutting and processing is found to be inconvenient to use in reed harvesting.The data of the experiments provided an important foundation for determining the structural parameters of reed cutter.Cao Zhen Jin Xin Liao Qingxi 2011International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2011,4,2:4

13Soil fauna diversity at different stages of reed restoration in a lakeshore wetland at Lake Taihu,China显示文摘Introduction:Wetland soil fauna support material cycling and restoration processes in wetland ecosystems.In our study,we observed variations in wetland soil fauna on the shores of Lake Taihu,China.We examined the relationships between fauna and major environmental factors,and looked at the short-and long-term changes in reed wetlands under restoration and in the natural reed lakeshore.Outcomes:We identified 93 groups of soil fauna in different wetlands and found significant differences in the lakeshore wetlands’soil fauna assemblages,depending on the length of the restoration period.By analyzing the soil fauna community evenness,dominance,number of taxa,and diversity,we found minimal seasonal variation in the soil fauna community diversity and abundance.The abundance of soil fauna in the sites under restoration decreased with depth below the soil surface.The reed restoration was obvious in the succession of the soil fauna groups in the long-term site.Although the restoration had an overall positive long-term effect on the soil fauna communities,there were no obvious short-term changes in the number of individuals.Conclusion:The study explored various potential measures to restore soil fauna in the Lake Taihu wetland and developed a theoretical basis for restoring the lakeshore wetland ecosystem.Wei Li Zhiguo Dou Lijuan Cui Xinsheng Zhao Manyin Zhang Yan Zhang Changjun Gao Zheng Yang Yinru Lei Xu Pan 2020Ecosystem Health and Sustainability2020,6,1:1

18Response of reed community to the environment gradientwater depth in the Yellow River Delta, China显示文摘We investigated and monitored a reed community in the fields.Data on the bio-ecological characteristics and β-diversity of reed communities in different environmental gradients(mainly based on water depth)of the Yellow River Delta were collected through multianalysis,extremum analysis and β-diversity index analysis.In accordance with the square sum of deviations(Ward)cluster analysis,10 sampling plots were divided into six types with the dominant plants in different plots varying according to the change in environmental gradients.The dominant plants in these plots varied from aquatic plants to xerophytes and salt tolerant plants as water depth decreased.The average height and diameter of the reeds at breast level were significantly correlated with the average water depth.The fitness curves of average density and coverage with average water depth were nonlinear.When the average water depth was 0.3 m,the average density and coverage of reeds reached the apex value,while the height and diameter of the reeds at breast level increased with the water depth.There were obvious changes to the environmental gradient in the Yellow River Delta.The transitional communities were also found to exist in the Yellow River Delta by β-diversity analysis.Vicarious species appeared with the change in water depth.The occurrence of substitute species is determined by the function of common species between adjacent belts.The different functions of common species led to differences in community structure and function and differences in dominant plants.The result reflects the variations of species present in different habitats and directly reflects environmental heterogeneity.The values of β-diversity indices of adjacent plots were higher than those of nonadjacent plots.There are transition zones between the xerophytes and aquatic plants in the Yellow River Delta.In an aquatic environment,the similarity of reed community is higher than that of xeromorphic plants.The β-diversity index can reflect plant succession trends caused by the change in environmental gradients in the Yellow River Delta.The β-diversity index reveals plant responses to changes in environmental gradient and is helpful in observing changes in patterns of species diversity in relation to environmental gradient change and evolving trends in the future,which in turn plays a prominent role when environmental water requirements of wetland are discussed.Baoshan CUI Xinsheng ZHAO Zhifeng YANG Bin CHEN Na TANG Xuejie TAN 2008Frontiers in Biology2008,3,2:0

20Design and Experiment of Fluid Dynamic Ultrasonic Water Aerator显示文摘In order to improve the efficiency of water aerator,based on Venturi experimental principle in hydraulics and fluid dynamic ultrasonic generator,the inlet section,throat section,and outlet section of reed whistle ultrasonic generator were designed,and the effect of the water aerator on dissolved oxygen was preliminarily studied. Results indicate that using this water aerator,the dissolved oxygen was 7. 94 mg / L,exceeding the saturation value of dissolved oxygen( 7. 82 mg / L) at current water temperature,reaching the supersaturation.
