| 2 | The NLRP3 inflammasome: a potential therapeutic target for traumatic brain injury显示文摘Although the precise mechanisms contributing to secondary brain injury following traumatic brain injury are complex and obscure,a number of studies have demonstrated that inflammatory responses are an obvious and early feature in the pathogenesis of traumatic brain injury.Inflammasomes are multiprotein complexes that prompt the stimulation of caspase-1 and subsequently induce the maturation and secretion of proinflammatory cytokines,such as interleukin-1β and interleukin-18.These cytokines play a pivotal role in facilitating innate immune responses and inflammation.Among various inflammasome complexes,the NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3(NLRP3)inflammasome is the best characterized,a crucial role for NLRP3 has been demonstrated in various brain diseases,including traumatic brain injury.Several recent studies have revealed the contribution of NLRP3 inflammasome in identifying cellular damage and stimulating inflammatory responses to aseptic tissue injury after traumatic brain injury.Even more important,blocking or inhibiting the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome may have substantial potential to salvage tissue damage during traumatic brain injury.In this review,we summarize recently described mechanisms that are involved in the activation and regulation of the NLRP3 inflammasome.Moreover,we review the recent investigations on the contribution of the NLRP3 inflammasome in the pathophysiology of TBI,and current advances and challenges in potential NLRP3-targeted therapies.A significant contribution of NLRP3 inflammasome activation to traumatic brain injury implies that therapeutic approaches focused on targeting specific inflammasome components could significantly improve the traumatic brain injury outcomes. | Saifudeen Ismael Heba A.Ahmed Tusita Adris Kehkashan Parveen Parth Thakor Tauheed Ishrat | 2021 | Neural Regeneration Research2021,16,1: | 5 |
| 3 | The oncofetal protein IMP3 is an indicator of early recurrence and poor outcome in mucoepidermoid carcinoma of salivary glands显示文摘Objective: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma(MEC) is the most common primary malignancy of the salivary glands. Insulin-like growth factor-II m RNA-binding protein-3(IMP3) is an important prognostic factor in some cancers and a tool that differentiates between benign and malignant pancreatic lesions. This study aimed to identify a relationship between the expression of IMP3 and the outcome of salivary gland MEC, as well as to differentiate MEC from pleomorphic adenoma(PA).Methods: Tissue specimens from 70 cases of salivary gland MEC, 40 cases of PA, and 10 cases with normal salivary gland were examined immunohistochemically for IMP3. The association among the expression of IMP3, clinicopathological characteristics and patient's survival was assessed.Results: IMP3 was present in 51.4% of MEC but absent in PA and normal salivary gland tissues. IMP3 expression was associated with age > 60 years, submandibular gland tumors, tumor size > 4 cm, high-grade tumors, lymph node metastasis, involvement of surgical margins, perineural invasion, distant metastasis, advanced TNM stage, tumor relapse, and death(P<0.05). Increased expression of IMP3, tumors of the submandibular gland, and lymph node metastasis were independent prognostic factors of disease-free survival(DFS). In addition, IMP3 was a strong predictor of overall survival(OS) together with distant metastasis and intermediate and high-grade tumors.Conclusions: IMP3 expression is highly important in evaluating the outcome of MEC. | 4 | Corrosion behavior of cold-rolled and post heat-treated 316L stainless steel in 0.9wt%NaCl solution显示文摘The effect of cold rolling and post-rolling heat treatment on the microstructural and electrochemical properties of the 316L stainless steel was investigated.Two-pass and four-pass cold-rolled stainless steel specimens were heat-treated by annealing at 900℃followed by quenching in water.During the cold rolling,the microstructure of the as-received specimen transformed from austenite to strain-inducedα′-martensite due to significant plastic deformation that also resulted in significant grain elongation(i.e.,~33%and 223%increases in the grain elongation after two and four rolling passes,respectively).The hardness of the heat-treated as-received specimen decreased from HV 190 to 146 due to the recovery and recrystallization of the austenite grain structure.The cyclic polarization scans of the as-rolled and heat-treated specimens were obtained in 0.9wt%NaCl solution.The pitting potential of the four-pass rolled specimen was significantly increased from 322.3 to 930.5 mV after post-rolling heat treatment.The beneficial effect of the heat treatment process was evident from~10-times-lower corrosion current density and two-orders-of-magnitude-lower passive current density of the heat-treated specimens compared with those of the as-rolled specimens.Similarly,appreciably lower corrosion rate(3.302×10^(−4)mm/a)and higher pitting resistance(1115.5 mV)were exhibited by the postrolled heat-treated specimens compared with the as-rolled 316L stainless steel specimens. | K.Bin Tayyab A.Farooq A.Ahmed Alvi A.Basit Nadeem K.M.Deen | 2021 | International Journal of Minerals,Metallurgy and Materials2021,28,3: | 4 |
| 5 | Bougainvillea spectabilis flowers extract protects against the rotenone-induced toxicity显示文摘Objective:To investigate the effect of two extracts of Bougainvillea spectabilis(B. spectabilis) flowers with yellow and pink/purple on brain oxidative stress and neuronal damage caused in rats by systemic rotenone injection. Methods:Rotenone 1.5 mg/kg was given three times per week alone or in combination with B. spectabilis flowers extracts(25 mg or 50 mg) via the subcutaneous route for 2 weeks. Brain concentrations of the lipid peroxidation marker malondialdehyde(MDA),reduced glutathione,nitric oxide(nitrite),the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1beta(Il-1β) as well as butyrylcholinesterase,and paraoxonase-1(PON-1) activities,were determined. Histopathology and caspase-3 immunohistochemistry were also performed. Results:Rotenone resulted in significant increases of brain MDA(the product of lipid peroxidation),and nitric oxide content along with decreased brain reduced glutathione. There were also marked and significant inhibition of brain PON-1 and BCh E activities and increased Il-1β in brain of rotenone-treated rats. B. spectabilis flowers extract itself resulted in brain oxidative stress increasing both lipid peroxidation and nitrite content whilst inhibiting PON-1 activity. The yellow flowers extract inhibited BCh E activity and increased brain Il-1β. When given to rotenone-treated rats,B. spectabilis extracts,however,decreased lipid peroxidation while their low administered doses increased brain GSH. Brain nitrite decreased by the pink extract but showed further increase by the yellow extract. Either extract,however,caused further inhibition of PON-1 activity while the yellow extract resulted in further inhibition of BChE activity. Histopathological studies indicated that both extracts protected against brain,liver and kidney damage caused by the toxicant. Conclusions:These data indicate that B. spectabilis flowers extracts exert protective effect against the toxic effects of rotenone on brain,liver and kidney. | 9 | A Comparative Study on the Corrosion Performance of Ni_(47)Ti_(49)Co_4 and Ni_(51)Ti_(49) Shape Memory Alloys in Simulated Saliva Solution for Dental Applications显示文摘In this study, the corrosion behavior of Ni_(47)Ti_(49)Co_4 shape memory alloy(SMA) was investigated in simulated saliva solution with the binary alloy Ni_(51)Ti_(49) as a reference. The surface morphology and the chemical composition of the oxide films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy before and after immersion in the test solutions, respectively. The results showed that the ternary alloy was less affected by the test solution,owning to the formation of passive layer composed mainly of the oxides of titanium and cobalt in several oxidation states.Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization measurements affirmed that the passive oxide film significantly improved the corrosion resistance of Ni_(47)Ti_(49)Co_4 SMAs as demonstrated by the smaller corrosion current density, larger resistance and smaller capacitance. | 12 | Rotational flow of Oldroyd-B nanofluid subject to Cattaneo-Christov double diffusion theory显示文摘A nanofluid is composed of a base fluid component and nanoparticles, in which the nanoparticles are dispersed in the base fluid. The addition of nanoparticles into a base fluid can remarkably improve the thermal conductivity of the nanofluid, and such an increment of thermal conductivity can play an important role in improving the heat transfer rate of the base fluid. Further, the dynamics of non-Newtonian fluids along with nanoparticles is quite interesting with numerous industrial applications. The present predominately predictive modeling studies the flow of the viscoelastic Oldroyd-B fluid over a rotating disk in the presence of nanoparticles. A progressive amendment in the heat and concentration equations is made by exploiting the Cattaneo-Christov heat and mass flux expressions. The characteristic of the Lorentz force due to the magnetic field applied normal to the disk is studied. The Buongiorno model together with the Cattaneo-Christov theory is implemented in the Oldroyd-B nanofluid flow to investigate the heat and mass transport mechanism. This theory predicts the characteristics of the fluid thermal and solutal relaxation time on the boundary layer flow. The von K′arm′an similarity functions are utilized to convert the partial differential equations(PDEs) into ordinary differential equations(ODEs). A homotopic approach for obtaining the analytical solutions to the governing nonlinear problem is carried out. The graphical results are obtained for the velocity field, temperature, and concentration distributions. Comparisons are made for a limiting case between the numerical and analytical solutions, and the results are found in good agreement. The results reveal that the thermal and solutal relaxation time parameters diminish the temperature and concentration distributions, respectively. The axial flow decreases in the downward direction for higher values of the retardation time parameter. | 14 | Geochemistry of lamprophyre dykes, Wadi Sikait area, South Eastern Desert, Egypt显示文摘The Wadi Sikait area lies at about 95 km southwest of Marsa Alam City along the Red Sea Coast, Eastern Desert, Egypt. It is occupied by Precambrian rocks of ophiolitic mélange, metamorphosed sandstones (MSS), gab-bros and monzogranites which were later intruded by lamprophyre dykes and quartz veins. The lamprophyre dykes were extruded in NW-SE and NE-SW trends cutting monzogranites and metamor-phosed sandstones. The lamprophyres are porphyritic and composed of clinopyroxene, olivine and amphibole phenocrysts enclosed in a fine-grained groundmass of clinopyroxene, amphibole, opaque and lithium mica. The al-teration products are represented by amphibole (tremolite-actinolite and hornblende), carbonate, epidote, chlorite, iddingsite, clay minerals, limonite and serpentine. The Sikait lamprophyre dykes can be classified as alkaline lamprophyres characterized by silica contents rang-ing from 41.65 wt% to 50.88 wt% and Na2O>K2O. They are enriched in LILE, LREE and HFSE, but strongly de-pleted in compatible elements such as Cr and Ni relative to the primitive mantle. Sikait lamprophyres have moderate Zr/Hf (35.6-52.8) and Nb/Ta (20.5-22.5) ratios. Most of these features are attributed to the origin of these dykes from the metasomatized mantle affected by subduction-related fluid. These lamprophyres are compositionally similar to Salu lamprophyres in eastern China. The Sikait lamprophyre samples have high LREE (320×10-6-419×10-6) relative to HREE (20×10-6-33×10-6) with ratios (LREE/HREE=11.6-18.7) and no negative Eu anomaly (Eu/Eu*=0.9-1.04). | 15 | Leaf gas exchange characteristics,biomass partitioning,and water use efficiencies of two C4 African grasses under simulated drought显示文摘Background:Few studies have evaluated the effect of drought on the morphophysiological characteristics of African C_(4) grasses.We investigated how drought affects leaf gas exchange characteristics,biomass partitioning,and water use efficiencies of Enteropogon macrostachyus and Cenchrus ciliaris.Methods:The grasses were grown in a controlled environment under optimum conditions,that is,70%of the maximum water‐holding capacity(WHC)for the first 40 days.Thereafter,half of the columns were maintained under optimum or drought conditions(30%of maximum WHC)for another 20 days.Results:Under optimum conditions,C.ciliaris showed a significantly higher photosynthetic rate,stomatal conductance,and transpiration rate than E.macrostachyus.Drought decreased the photosynthetic rate,stomatal conductance and transpiration rate only in C.ciliaris.The net photosynthetic rate,stomatal conductance,and leaf transpiration of E.macrostachyus did not differ significantly under optimum and drought conditions.E.macrostachyus showed an increase in its water use efficiencies under drought to a greater extent than C.ciliaris.Conclusions:Our results demonstrate that C.ciliaris is more sensitive to drought than E.macrostachyus.The decrease in the intercellular CO_(2) concentration and the increase in stomatal limitation with drought in C.ciliaris and E.macrostachyus suggest that stomatal limitation plays the dominant role in photosynthesis of the studied African C_(4) grasses. | Kevin Z.Mganga Jana Kuhla Andrea Carminati Johanna Pausch Mutez A.Ahmed | 2023 | Grassland Research2023,2,1: | 0 |

| 19 | Hydrocarbon generating-potential and maturity-related changes of the Khatatba Formation, Western Desert, Egypt显示文摘The petroliferous province of the Western Desert comprises several sedimentary basins with different hydrocarbon potentiality and production capability.The middle Jurassic Khatatba Formation was proved a potential source rock in some basins and active/effective in others.The current study aims to give a comprehensive assessment and evaluation of the potential organic-rich intervals of the Khatatba Formation across JG and JD fields,northeast Abu Gharadig Basin(NEAG).The hydrocarbon generating capability and sourcing of the Khatatba Formation studied through organic geochemistry calibrated with well logging.However,the efficiency of some widely used plots of geochemistry is re-evaluated according to their accuracy and consistency.Forty cuttings,thirteen cores and two oil samples obtained from three wells(JG-2,JG-3 and JD-4)were evaluated.The samples revealed total organic carbon(TOC)values ranging from 1 to 9 wt%,exhibiting a good-excellent potential source rock.A single sample in the JD-4 well attained a TOC value of 21.3 wt%with a generating potential(represented by S2 parameter)exceeding 146 mgHc/g rock required a special evaluation.Most of the samples(mainly in the JD-4 well)attained a sufficient level of thermal maturity for hydrocarbon generation with a Tmax up to 449C.The vitrinite reflectance(%Ro)values(a common maturity-related indicator)acquired from the JD-4 well ranging between 0.76%and 0.92%.These values are tediously increasing with depth indicating a uniform geothermal regime.The Khatatba organofacies,with wide variety of kerogen types(I,II,II-S and II/III),contain marine organic matter with a slight terrigenous input,exhibiting anoxic-suboxic environmental conditions.Oil-source correlations define the organic-rich intervals responsible for charging the accumulated hydrocarbon in the NEAG concession. | Mohammed A.Ahmed Mostafa M.A.Hassan | 2019 | Petroleum Research2019,4,2: | 0 |
| 20 | Suppression of NLRP3 inflammasome by ivermectin ameliorates bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis显示文摘Ivermectin is a US Food and Drug Administration(FDA)-approved antiparasitic agent with antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.Although recent studies reported the possible anti-inflammatory activity of ivermectin in respiratory injuries,its potential therapeutic effect on pulmonary fibrosis(PF)has not been investigated.This study aimed to explore the ability of ivermectin(0.6 mg/kg)to alleviate bleomycin-induced biochemical derangements and histological changes in an experimental PF rat model.This can provide the means to validate the clinical utility of ivermectin as a treatment option for idiopathic PF.The results showed that ivermectin mitigated the bleomycin-evoked pulmonary injury,as manifested by the reduced infiltration of inflammatory cells,as well as decreased the inflammation and fibrosis scores.Intriguingly,ivermectin decreased collagen fiber deposition and suppressed transforming growth factor-β1(TGF-β1)and fibronectin protein expression,highlighting its anti-fibrotic activity.This study revealed for the first time that ivermectin can suppress the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain(NOD)-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing protein 3(NLRP3)inflammasome,as manifested by the reduced gene expression of NLRP3 and the apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain(ASC),with a subsequent decline in the interleukin-1β(IL-1β)level.In addition,ivermectin inhibited the expression of intracellular nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB)and hypoxia‑inducible factor‑1α(HIF-1α)proteins along with lowering the oxidative stress and apoptotic markers.Altogether,this study revealed that ivermectin could ameliorate pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis induced by bleomycin.These beneficial effects were mediated,at least partly,via the downregulation of TGF-β1 and fibronectin,as well as the suppression of NLRP3 inflammasome through modulating the expression of HIF‑1αand NF-κB. | Mai A.ABD-ELMAWLA Heba R.GHAIAD Enas S.GAD Kawkab A.AHMED Maha ABDELMONEM | 2023 | Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2023,24,8: | 0 |
