Soil Microbiological Activity and Carbon Dynamics in the Current Climate Change Scenarios:A Review显示文摘Microbial activities are affected by a myriad of factors with end points involved in nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration issues.Because of their prominent role in the global carbon balance and their possible role in carbon sequestration, soil microbes are very important organisms in relation to global climate changes. This review focuses mainly on the responses of soil microbes to climate changes and subsequent effects on soil carbon dynamics. An overview table regarding extracellular enzyme activities(EAA) with all relevant literature data summarizes the effects of different ecosystems under various experimental treatments on EAA. Increasing temperature, altered soil moisture regimes, and elevated carbon dioxide significantly affect directly or indirectly soil microbial activities.High temperature regimes can increase the microbial activities which can provide positive feedback to climate change, whereas lower moisture condition in pedosystem can negate the increase, although the interactive effects still remain unanswered. Shifts in soil microbial community in response to climate change have been determined by gene probing, phospholipid fatty acid analysis(PLFA),terminal restriction length polymorphism(TRFLP), and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis(DGGE), but in a recent investigations, omic technological interventions have enabled determination of the shift in soil microbe community at a taxa level, which can provide very important inputs for modeling C sequestration process. The intricacy and diversity of the soil microbial population and how it responds to climate change are big challenges, but new molecular and stable isotope probing tools are being developed for linking fluctuations in microbial diversity to ecosystem function. | Javid A.SOFI Aabid H.LONE Mumtaz A.GANIE Naseer A.DAR Sajad A.BHAT Malik MUKHTAR Mohd Ashraf DAR Shazia RAMZAN | 2016 | Pedosphere2016,26,5: | 13
Biochar for Sustainable Soil Health:A Review of Prospects and Concerns显示文摘Biochar as a soil amendment is confronted with the challenge that it must benefit soil health as it can be by no means separated from soils once it is added. The available literature even though sparse and mostly based on short-term studies has been encouraging and the trend obtained so far has raised many hopes. Biochar has been reported to positively impact an array of soil processes ranging from benefiting soil biology, controlling soil-borne pathogens, enhancing nitrogen fixation, improving soil physical and chemical properties, decreasing nitrate(NO-3) leaching and nitrous oxide(N2O) emission to remediation of contaminated soils. However, very little biochar is still utilized as soil amendment mainly because these benefits are yet to be quantified, and also the mechanisms by which the soil health is improved are poorly understood. Due to the infancy of research regarding this subject, there are still more questions than answers. The future research efforts must focus on carrying out long-term experiments and uncover the mechanisms underlying these processes so that key concerns surrounding the use of biochar are addressed before its large scale application is recommended. | Aabid H.LONE Ghulam R.NAJAR Mumtaz A.GANIE Javid A.SOFI Tahir ALI | 2015 | Pedosphere2015,25,5: | 12

Numerical Analysis of a Microjet-Based Method for Active Flow Control in Convergent-Divergent Nozzles with a Sudden Expansion显示文摘A method based on microjets is implemented to control the flow properties in a convergent-divergent nozzle undergoing a sudden expansion.Three different variants of this active control technique are explored numerically by means of a finite-volume method for compressible fluid flow:with the first one,the control is implemented at the base, with the second at the wall, while the third one may be regarded as a combination of these. When jets are over-expanded,the control is not very effective. However, when a favourable pressure gradient is established in the nozzle, the control becomes effective, leading to an increase in the base pressure. | Abdul Aabid Sher Afghan Khan Muneer Baig | 2022 | Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing2022,18,6: | 1
Effect of traditional management practices on woody species composition and structure in montane subtropical forests of Meghalaya,Northeast India显示文摘In Meghalaya, northeast India, the local people have the tradition of managing forest resources since early ages. The management practice varies and there are forests with high degree of protection, where no extraction(sacred forests) is allowed. There are also forests with moderate-level of protection and-extraction(reserved forests) as well as forests with low level of protection and open extraction(village forests). The present study was conducted to understand the impact of this traditional management system on the level of human disturbance, and on community composition and structure of the forests in Khasi hills of Meghalaya. The result revealed that disturbance index was low, whereas species richness, density and basal cover were significantly high in forests with high degree of protection(sacred forest) than those with low protection(reserved and village forest). Majority of endemic and threatened plant species were restricted to sacred forests as compared to the other forest types. Though these practices have ensured the sustainable use of forest resources by the local people but due to increased human-pressure and-disturbances, more effective conservation strategies need to be undertaken. Therefore, providing alternatives for fuelwood to local people, environmental education, encouraging afforestation and developmental activities involving local communities are recommended. | Aabid Hussain MIR Krishna UPADHAYA | 2017 | Journal of Mountain Science2017,14,8: | 0
Numerical Analysis of Cavity-Based Control of Base Pressure Variations at Supersonic Mach Numbers显示文摘In the present study, the base pressure variations induced by the presence of a cavity, known to have a strong influence of the behaviour of supersonic projectiles, are investigated through numerical solution of the balance equations for mass, momentum, and energy. An area ratio of four is considered and numerical simulations are carried out at Mach M=1.2,1.4,1.6,and 1.8 assuming no cavity or cavity locations 0.5D,1D,1.5D,and 2D.The inlet pressure of the nozzle is considered as a flow variable. The Taguchi method is also used, and the considered cases are then analyzed using a full factorial experimental design. The results show that the cavity is effective in increasing the base pressure for the conditions examined. For other nozzle pressure ratios, cavities do not lead to passive control due the change in the reattachment length. The distribution of wall pressure reveals that,in general,a cavity used to implement passive control of the base pressure does not adversely influence the flow pattern in the domain. | Ridwan Sher Afghan Khan Jaffar Syed Mohamed Ali Mohd.Azan Mohammed Sapardi Abdul Aabid | 2023 | Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing2023,19,6: | 0
Abundance and habitat-suitability relationship deteriorate in fragmented forest landscapes:a case of Adinandra griffithii Dyer,a threatened endemic tree from Meghalaya in northeast India显示文摘Introduction:A strong positive‘abundance and habitat-suitability’relationship is crucial for conservation of species.Nevertheless, anthropogenic alteration of natural landscapes leading to land use and land cover change, habitat loss, and species extinctions(may)have putatively disturbed this relationship.Hence,it is important to study the nature of the relationship in such human influenced landscapes. Methods:In this study,we endeavored to understand the consistency of the relationship in the fragmented natural landscapes in the Khasi,Garo, and Jaintia hills of Meghalaya in northeast India, with Adinandra griffithii(an endangered endemic tree)as a model species. We reconstructed the distribution of its suitable habitats as a function of the remotely sensed vegetation phenology(i.e.,EVI data),using point occurrence data and ecological niche modeling(ENM)tool.Estimation of the abundance and habitat characterization was done through field surveys following standard methods. Results:The study revealed that remotely sensed landscape-level vegetation phenology could effectively discriminate the suitable and unsuitable habitats of threatened species.Linear regression model showed a weak positive correlation between abundance and predicted habitat suitability for adult trees indicating(plausible)deterioration in the relationship. However, sapling and seedling populations did not show a precise trend in this respect.Field-based studies revealed that removal of the species from the suitable habitats because of anthropogenic disturbances possibly weakened the abundance-suitability relationship. Conclusions:The findings of the study enjoin the need for re-establishment of the species in the suitable areas for its conservation and perpetuation. | Dibyendu Adhikari Aabid Hussain Mir Krishna Upadhaya Viheno Iralu Dilip Kumar Roy | 2018 | Ecological Processes2018,7,1: | 0
Passive Control of Base Pressure in a Converging-Diverging Nozzle with Area Ratio 2.56 at Mach 1.8显示文摘In this study,a duct is considered and special attention is paid to a passive method for the control of the base pressure relying on the use of a cavity with a variable aspect ratio. The Mach number considered is 1.8,and the area ratio of the duct is 2.56.In particular, two cavities are examined, their sizes being 3:3 and 6:3.The used L/D spans the interval 1–10 while the NPRs(nozzle pressure ratio)range from 2 to 9.The results show that the control becomes effective once the nozzles are correctly expanded or under-expanded.The pressure contours at different NPR and L/D are presented. It is shown that the NPR and cavity location strongly influence the base pressure. The NPR,Mach number, and cavity aspect ratio have a strong effect on the base pressure in the wake region. | Nur Husnina Muhamad Zuraidi Sher Afghan Khan Abdul Aabid Muneer Baig Istiyaq Mudassir Shaiq | 2023 | Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing2023,19,3: | 0
Computation of Stiffness and Damping Derivatives of an Ogive in a Limiting Case of Mach Number and Specific Heat Ratio显示文摘This work aims to compute stability derivatives in the Newtonian limit in pitch when the Mach number tends to infinity. In such conditions, these stability derivatives depend on the Ogive’s shape and not the Mach number.Generally, the Mach number independence principle becomes effective from M=10 and above. The Ogive nose is obtained through a circular arc on the cone surface.Accordingly, the following arc slopes are consideredλ=5,10,15,−5,−10,and−15.It is found that the stability derivatives decrease due to the growth inλfrom 5 to 15 and vice versa.Forλ=5 and 10,the damping derivative declines with an increase inλfrom 5 to 10.Yet,for the damping derivatives, the minimum location remains at a pivot position,h=0.75 for large values ofλ.Hence,whenλ=−15,the damping derivatives are independent of the cone angles for most pivot positions except in the early twenty percent of the leading edge. | Aysha Shabana Asha Crasta Sher Afghan Khan Abdul Aabid Muneer Baig | 2023 | Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing2023,19,5: | 0
A Systematic Review of Thermoelectric Peltier Devices: Applications and Limitations显示文摘Conventional refrigeration processes release ammonia and freon into the atmosphere, which results in global warming. These problems may be overcome by using thermoelectric modules because of the absence of coolants or refrigerants in these systems. However, the cooling performances of such modules are relatively small in comparison to those of conventional refrigerators. In this paper, the working principles of thermoelectric modules are discussed together with a review of different relevant aspects, namely:the thermoelectric materials, and their mechanical properties used to build thermoelectric devices, different types of thermoelectric devices available on the market, mathematical modeling of thermoelectric materials, and various applications of thermoelectric materials in different fields. | M.K.Shilpa Md Abdul Raheman Abdul Aabid Muneer Baig R.K.Veeresha Nagesh Kudva | 2023 | Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing2023,19,1: | 0
Modeling and Validation of Base Pressure for Aerodynamic Vehicles Based on Machine Learning Models显示文摘The application of abruptly enlarged flows to adjust the drag of aerodynamic vehicles using machine learning models has not been investigated previously. The process variables(Mach number(M),nozzle pressure ratio(η),area ratio(α),and length to diameter ratio(γ))were numerically explored to address several aspects of this process, namely base pressure(β)and base pressure with cavity(βcav). In this work, the optimal base pressure is determined using the PCA-BAS-ENN based algorithm to modify the base pressure presetting accuracy, thereby regulating the base drag required for smooth flow of aerodynamic vehicles.Based on the identical dataset, the GA-BP and PSO-BP algorithms are also compared to thePCA-BAS-ENNalgorithm.The data for training and testing the algorithmswas derived using the regression equation developed using the Box-Behnken Design(BBD).The results show that the PCA-BAS-ENN model delivered highly accurate predictions when compared to the other two models. As a result, the advantages of these results are two-fold,providing:(i)a detailed examination of the efficiency of different neural network algorithms in dealing with a genuine aerodynamic problem, and(ii)helpful insights for regulating process variables to improve technological, operational, and financial factors, simultaneously. | Jaimon Dennis Quadros Sher Afghan Khan Abdul Aabid Muneer Baig | 2023 | Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences2023,137,12: | 0
Assessing the effectiveness of community managed forests for plant diversity conservation in Meghalaya,Northeast India显示文摘In the state Meghalaya, northeast India,>80%of the forest lands are owned by local communities and managed by traditional institutions. These forests are under severe threats due to a number of human disturbances. The present study was conducted to assess the plant diversity and identify the community forests for priority conservation in Khasi Hills of Meghalaya.Floristic explorations carried out in the 87 forests reveals the presence of 1300 plant species of which 400 are either rare, endemic or threatened.Of the different forest categories, reserve forests had the highest number of species(1190),followed by sacred forests(987 species)and village forests(786 species).Majority of the forests(56)had high-species richness, irreplaceability level(42 forests)and vulnerability level(54).In terms of area,13.8%(1666.8 ha)fall under low risk while 1855 ha under high risk zone.High risk zone was mostly represented by village forests. An area of 7661.56 ha of community forests falls under high priority category and hence calls for immediate conservation actions. The conservation priority map generated in the present study will help to concentrate the protection strategy to the demarcated and adjoining areas and help conservationists and planners to evolve effective strategies for conservation of the community forests. | Aabid Hussain Mir Kiranmay Sarma Krishna Upadhaya | 2022 | Plant Diversity2022,44,3: | 0
