Prevalence and factors of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among hand surgeons显示文摘BACKGROUND The nature of tasks required by hand surgeons require both forceful and repetitive maneuvers, thus subjecting these surgeons to the risk of musculoskeletal(MSK)injuries during their years in practice.AIM To assess the prevalence, characteristics and impact of MSK disorders among hand surgeons.METHODS A modified version of the physical discomfort survey was sent to surgeons who were members of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand via e-mail.The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics,one-way analysis of variance, and Fisher’s exact test.P values of<0.05 were considered statistically significant.RESULTS Of the 578 respondents,60.4%reported that they had sustained a work-related MSK injury,of which the most common diagnoses were lateral elbow epicondylitis(18.7%),low back pain(17.1%)and carpal tunnel syndrome(15.6%).Among those that reported an injury,73.1%required treatment and 29.2%needed time off work as a direct result of their injury. The number of work-related injuries incurred by a surgeon increased significantly with increasing age(P<0.003),increasing years in practice(P<0.001)and higher case load(P<0.05).CONCLUSION To our knowledge this study is the first of its kind to assess MSK injuries sustained by Hand surgeons with a high incidence. These results should increase awareness on this aspect and fuel future studies directed at preventing these types of work-related injuries, thus minimizing the financial and psychological burden on these surgeons and the healthcare system. | Saad M Alqahtani Mohammad M Alzahrani Ryan Bicknell David Pichora | 2022 | World Journal of Orthopedics2022,13,5: | 2

Combinations of chronic conditions, functional limitations and geriatric syndromes associated with periodontal disease显示文摘Objective To identify complex multimorbid conditions, including chronic conditions, functional limitations and geriatric syndromes, associated with the presence and severity of periodontal disease(PD),after accounting for a series of demographic and behavioural characteristics.Design This cross-sectional study used secondary data from a nationally representative sample, classification and regression tree analysis and random forest identified combinations of specific conditions constituting complex multimorbidity associated with the presence and severity of PD.Setting US National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey(2013-2014).Participants Individuals 60 years of age or older who completed a periodontal examination. Results Among 937 participants aged 60 and over, the prevalence of PD was 72.6%.PD was associated with sociodemographic factors and limitations in instrumental activities of daily living.Male sex and non-white race were the two most critical predictors of stage III/IV PD.Other important factors included age, education level and the federal poverty level. Conclusions Rather than chronic conditions or geriatric syndromes,PD was associated with sociodemographic factors and functional limitations.Accounting for the co-occurrence of sociodemographic and functional limitations will help recognise older adults who are at an increased vulnerability to the severity of PD. | Hussam M Alqahtani Siran M Koroukian Kurt Stange Nabil F Bissada Nicholas K Schiltz | 2022 | Family Medicine and Community Health2022,10,3: | 1

Work-related musculoskeletal injuries among upper extremity surgeons:A web-based survey显示文摘BACKGROUND Work-related injuries have gained recent attention, especially in the orthopaedic literature. As upper extremity orthopaedic surgical tasks require repetitive and constant maneuvers, these surgeons can be at increased risk of acquiring workrelated musculoskeletal(MSK)disorders during their years in practice.AIM To assess the prevalence, characteristics and impact of MSK disorders among upper extremity orthopaedic surgeons.METHODS A modified version of the physical discomfort survey was sent to surgeons who were members of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and the Canadian shoulder and elbow society via e-mail.The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics,one-way analysis of variance, and Fisher's exact test.P values of<0.05 were considered statistically significant.RESULTS Of the 142 respondents,90.8% were males and the majority were younger than 55 years old(65.5%).A work-related MSK injury was reported by 89.4% of respondents,of which the most common diagnoses were low back pain(26.1%)and lateral elbow epicondylitis(18.3%).Among those that reported an injury,82.7%required treatment and 26% required time off work as a direct result of their injury. The need to undergo treatment due to the injury was associated with increased number of injuries(P<0.01).Moreover,surgeons were more likely to require time off work when they had been in practice for>21 years(P<0.05).CONCLUSION A high proportion of surgeons in our survey reported MSK injuries, with more than one quarter of surgeons reported requiring time off work due to an MSK injury. The high incidence of these disorders may place a financial and psychological burden on surgeons and affect their ability to provide patient care.Awareness of operative ergonomics, irrespective of surgical specialty may help to decrease or possibly prevent the occurrence of these disorders. | Mohammad M Alzahrani Saad M Alqahtani David Pichora Ryan Bicknell | 2021 | World Journal of Orthopedics2021,12,11: | 1

Occupational injuries and burn out among orthopedic oncology surgeons显示文摘BACKGROUND Orthopedic oncology surgeons commonly engage in prolonged and complex surgical procedures. These types of surgeries increase the risk of physical and psychological stressors, which may in turn make these physicians prone to workrelated occupational injuries.AIM The aim of this study was to explore in orthopedic oncologists, the prevalence of work-related physical injuries and psychological disturbances.METHODS A modified version of the physical discomfort survey was developed to assess occupational injuries among orthopedic oncology surgeon members of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, the Canadian Orthopedic Oncology Society and European Musculoskeletal Oncology Societies. The survey was sent by email, and it explored musculoskeletal complaints, psychological disturbances, treatment required for these complaints and the requirement of time off work.RESULTS A total of 67 surgeon responses were collected.A high number of orthopedic oncologists(84%)reported an occupational injury.Low back pain(39%)was the most prevalent musculoskeletal condition, followed by lumbar disk herniation(16%),shoulder tendinitis(15%)and lateral epicondylitis(13%).Of the cohort,46%required surgery and 31%required time off work due to their injury.Thirty-three respondents reported a psychological disorder.Burnout(27%),anxiety(20%)and insomnia(20%)were the most commonly reported.Time required off work due to injury was associated with old age and years in practice.CONCLUSION Orthopedic oncology surgeons report a high prevalence of work-related disorders.Lower back related injury and burnout were the most reported disorders.Improving operative room ergonomics and prevention of stress related to the work environment should be areas to explore in upcoming research. | Abdulrahman M Alaseem Robert E Turcotte Nathalie Ste-Marie Mohammad M Alzahrani Saad M Alqahtani Krista A Goulding | 2022 | World Journal of Orthopedics2022,13,12: | 0
Adherence to Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices in diabetes mellitus patients in Saudi Arabia:A multicenter retrospective study显示文摘BACKGROUND Patients with diabetes mellitus(DM)are predisposed to an increased risk of infection signifying the importance of vaccination to protect against its potentially severe complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices(CDC/ACIP)issued immunization recommendations to protect this patient population.AIM To assess the adherence of patients with DM to the CDC/ACIP immunization recommendations in Saudi Arabia and to identify the factors associated with the vaccine adherence rate.METHODS An observational retrospective study conducted in 2023 was used to collect data on the vaccination records from 13 diabetes care centers in Saudi Arabia with 1000 eligible patients in phase I with data collected through chart review and 709 patients in phase II through online survey.RESULTS Among participants,10.01%(n=71)had never received any vaccine, while 85.89%(n=609)received at least one dose of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)vaccine,and 34.83%(n=247)had received the annual influenza vaccine.Only 2.96%(n=21),2.11%(n=15),and 1.12%(n=8)received herpes zoster, tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis(Tdap),and human papillomavirus(HPV)vaccines, respectively. For patients with DM in Saudi Arabia, the rate of vaccination for annual influenza and COVID-19 vaccines was higher compared to other vaccinations such as herpes zoster,Tdap, pneumococcal, and HPV.Factors such as vaccine recommendations provided by family physicians or specialists, site of care, income level,DM-related hospitalization history, residency site, hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c)level,and health sector type can significantly influence the vaccination rate in patients with DM.Among non-vaccinated patients with DM,the most reported barriers were lack of knowledge and fear of side effects. This signifies the need for large-scale research in this area to identify additional factors that might facilitate adherence to CDC/ACIP vaccine recommendations in patients with DM.CONCLUSION In Saudi Arabia, patients with DM showed higher vaccination rates for annual influenza and COVID-19 vaccines compared to other vaccinations such as herpes zoster,Tdap, pneumococcal, and HPV.Factors such as vaccine recommendations provided by family physicians or specialists, the site of care, income level,DM-related hospitalization history, residency site,HbA1c level, and health sector type can significantly influence the vaccination rate in patients with DM. | Saleh Fahad Alqifari Aya K Esmail Dalal M Alarifi Ghalya Y Alsuliman Maram M Alhati May R Mutlaq Mohammed Aldhaeefi Shaden A Alshuaibi Palanisamy Amirthalingam Abrar Abdallah Afaf S Wasel Heba R Hamad Shoroq Alamin Tasneem H Atia Tariq Alqahtani | 2024 | World Journal of Diabetes2024,15,3: | 0
Vaccinations against respiratory infections in Arabian Gulf countries: Barriers and motivators显示文摘AIM To study the uptake, barriers and motivators of influen-za, pneumococcal, meningococcal and pertussis vaccines among members of public in Arabian Gulf countries.METHODS A cross-sectional survey among the Gulf Cooperation Council(GCC) countries' residents. Data collected electronically through a smartphone app. The survey variables aimed to investigate the respondents' awareness about vaccines against influenza, pneumococcal, meningococcal and pertussis infections. Collected data concerning the respondents' socio-demographic characteristics, their perception toward vaccine uptake and the factors that motivate or demotivate them from taking influenza vaccine. The data were analysed statistically using the SPSS v.23.0. Differences in the characteristics of users from different countries were quantified through bivariate analysis. Other important variables and controlling factors were studied using logistic regression. RESULTS A total of 1812 respondents participated in the study. Their mean age was 27 years, 82% were male and 24% had ≥ 1 chronic diseases. The overall uptake of influenza vaccine was 17%(21% among 'at risk' people) and ranged from 15% in Saudi Arabia to 24% in Qatar. Doctor's advice(23%) and a perception of having low body immunity(21%) were the main cited reasons for being vaccinated, whereas unawareness about the vaccine(43%) was the main barrier. The overall uptake of pneumococcal vaccine in the preceding three years was 22%(25% among 'at risk' individuals) and ranged from 0% in Bahrain to 79% in Kuwait. The overall uptake of pertussis vaccine was 16%(31% among 'vulnerable' people), and ranged from 7% in Saudi Arabia to 75% in Oman. The overall uptake of meningococcal vaccine was 20%(29% among the 'at risk' people) and ranged from 3% in Oman to 50% in Bahrain.CONCLUSION The vaccination uptake across GCC countries is suboptimal and varies widely across the countries. Further research is needed to unearth the reasons and formulate action plan. | Amani S Alqahtani Daniah M Bondagji Abdullah A Alshehari Mada H Basyouni Tariq M Alhawassi Nasser F Bin Dhim Harunor Rashid | 2017 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2017,5,6: | 0
Thoracic imaging outcomes in COVID-19 survivors显示文摘The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic presents a significant global public health challenge. One in five individuals with COVID-19 presents with symptoms that last for weeks after hospital discharge,a condition termed“long COVID”.Thus, efficient follow-up of patients is needed to assess the resolution of lung pathologies and systemic involvement.Thoracic imaging is multimodal and involves using different forms of waves to produce images of the organs within the thorax. In general,it includes chest X-ray,computed tomography, lung ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging techniques.Such modalities have been useful in the diagnosis and prognosis of COVID-19.These tools have also allowed for the follow-up and assessment of long COVID.This review provides insights on the effectiveness of thoracic imaging techniques in the follow-up of COVID-19 survivors who had long COVID. | Jaber S Alqahtani Saeed M Alghamdi Abdulelah M Aldhahir Malik Althobiani Reynie Purnama Raya Tope Oyelade | 2021 | World Journal of Radiology2021,13,6: | 0
