| 2 | The vegetation and climate change during Neocene and Early Quaternary in Jiuxi Basin, China显示文摘Sporopollen record in the Laojunmiao Section at Yumen in the Hexi Corridor foreland depression at the northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau revealed that during the period of 13.0―11.15 Ma the ecological environment of the Jiuxi Basin is characterized by steppe vegetation and a semi-moist climate. During 11.16―8.60 Ma prevailed forests of cypress and a still warmer, moister climate; steppe vegetation and dry climate began probably at about 8.6 Ma. Although aridification had been relaxed time and again during 8.40―6.93 Ma (forest-steppe, warm-semi-moist), 6.64―5.67 Ma (open-forest and steppe, warmer-semi-moist) and 5.42―4.96 Ma (steppe, semi-arid), the climate in the region became drier and drier in response to the fre- quent occurrence of aridity during 6.93―6.64 Ma (steppe, semi-arid), 5.67―5.42 Ma (de- sert-steppe, arid), 3.66―3.30 Ma (desert-steppe, arid) and 2.56―2.21 Ma (desert, arid). | 6 | Extraction and purification of TGFβ and its effect on the induction of apoptosis of hepatocytes显示文摘AIM To extract and purify the transforming growth factor β (TGF β), and to demonstrate its biological activity in vivo and induction of apoptosis of hepatocytes in vitro.METHODS TGF β was isolated from fresh bovine platelets by acid/ethanol extraction method and purified with ion exchange and gel chromatography. The extracted TGF β was injected subcutaneously to mice, and its biological activity in vivo was observed 72 hfs post-injection by HE staining. The morphological changes were observed by HE staining and the occurrence of apoptosis was detected by TUNEL method after the human normal hepatic cell line QZG was treated with 8 μg@L 1 TGFβ for 12 hrs in vitro.RESULTS The molecular mass 25 ku TGF β protein was successfully extracted. It was able to induce localized granulation tissue formation in vivo. TGF β-treated hepatocytes showed obvious apoptotic morphological changes, including the pyknosis and dense-stained nuclei and cytoplasm, the fragmentary, annular or crescent nuclei, and the 'bubbling' cytoplasm. | 7 | Symmetric-key cryptosystem with DNA technology显示文摘DNA cryptography is a new field which has emerged with progress in the research of DNA computing. In our study, a symmetric-key cryptosystem was designed by applying a modern DNA biotechnology, microarray, into cryptographic technologies. This is referred to as DNA symmetric-key cryptosystem (DNASC). In DNASC, both encryption and decryption keys are formed by DNA probes, while its ciphertext is embedded in a specially designed DNA chip (microarray). The security of this system is mainly rooted in difficult biology processes and problems, rather than conventional computing technology, thus it is unaffected by changes from the attack of the coming quantum computer. The encryption process is a fabrication of a specially designed DNA chip and the decryption process is the DNA hybridization. In DNASC, billions of DNA probes are hybridized and identified at the same time, thus the decryption process is conducted in a massive, parallel way. | 10 | RADIAL GROWTH OF HUASHAN PINE AND ITS RESPONSE TO CLIMATE显示文摘Huashan pine (Finus armandii Franch) is a poential species for dendroclimatic study. Ring-width cores were sampled for four stands of two sites from the eastern extreme of the Qinling Mountains. The ring-width chronologies developed in this study cover a maximum Period from A.D. 1359 t0 1992 and show high common chronology variance over the common period 1911-1960.All the chronologies are significantly correlated with all others, and the degree of correlation appears related to tree age. Response function analyses reveal that from 41 to 75 Percent of chronology variance can be accounted for by monthly mean air temperature and monthly total precipitation. A sufficiently strong correlation of ringwidth index with May and June rainfall and June temperature exists, implying soil moisture to be a limiting factor for Huashan pine growth. | 11 | Short-segment Barrett's esophagus and cardia intestinal metaplasia:A comparative analysis显示文摘AIM:To investigate the endoscopy and histology of short-segment Barrett's esophagus (SSBE) and cardia intestinal metaplasia (CIM),and their correlation with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) gastritis and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). METHODS:Biopsy specimens were taken from 32 SSBE patients and 41 CIM patients with normal appearance of the esophagogastric junction. Eight biopsy specimens from the lower esophagus,cardia,and gastric antrum were stained with hematoxylin/eosin,Alcian blue/periodic acid-Schiff,Alcian blue/high iron diamine and Gimenez dye. Results were graded independently by one pathologist. RESULTS:The SSBE patients were younger than the CIM patients (P < 0.01). The incidence of dysplasia and incomplete intestinal metaplasia subtype was higher in SSBE patients than in CIM patients (P < 0.01). H. pylori infection was correlated with antral intestinal metaplasia (P < 0.05),but not with reflux symptomatic,endoscopic,or histological markers of GERD in CIM patients. SSBE was correlated with reflux symptomatic and endoscopic esophagitis (P < 0.01),but not with H. pylori infection and antral intestinal metaplasia. CONCLUSION:Dysplasia risk is significantly greater in SSBE patients than in CIM patients. | 12 | Role of observation of live cases done by Japanese experts in the acquisition of ESD skills by a western endoscopist显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the role of observation of experts performing endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD)in the acquisition of ESD skills.METHODS:This prospective study is documenting the learning curve of one Western endoscopist.The study consisted of three periods.In the first period(preobservation),the trainee performed ESDs in animal models in his home institution in the United States.The second period(observation)consisted of visit to Japan and observation of live ESD cases done by experts.The observation of cases occurred over a 5-wk period.During the third period(post-observation),the trainee performed ESD in animal models in a similar fashion as in the first period.Three animal models were used:live40-50 kg Yorkshire pig,explanted pig stomach model,and explanted pig rectum model.The outcomes from the ESDs done in the animal models before and after observation of live human cases(main study intervention)were compared.Statistical analysis of the data included:Fisher’s exact test to compare distributions of a categorical variable,Wilcoxon rank sum test to compare distributions of a continuous variable between the two groups(pre-observation and post-observation),and Kruskal-Wallis test to evaluate the impact of lesion location and type of model(ex-vivo vs live pig)on lesion removal time.RESULTS:The trainee performed 38 ESDs in animal model(29 pre-observation/9 post-observation).The removal times post-observation were significantly shorter than those pre-observation(32.7±15.0 min vs 63.5±9.8 min,P<0.001).To minimize the impact of improving physician skill,the 9 lesions post-observation were compared to the last 9 lesions pre-observation and the removal times remained significantly shorter(32.7±15.0 min vs 61.0±7.4 min,P=0.0011).Regression analysis showed that ESD observation significantly reduced removal time when controlling for the sequence of lesion removal(P=0.025).Furthermore,it was also noted a trend towards decrease in failure to remove lesions and decrease in complications after the period of observation.This study did not find a significant difference in the time needed to remove lesions in different animal models.This finding could have important implications in designing training programs due to the substantial difference in cost between live animal and explanted organ models.The main limitation of this study is that it reflects the experience of a single endoscopist.CONCLUSION:Observation of experts performing ESD over short period of time can significantly contribute to the acquisition of ESD skills. | Peter V Draganov Myron Chang Roxana M Coman Mihir S Wagh Qi An Takuji Gotoda | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,16: | 3 |

| 14 | Nonlinear dynamics of self-oscillating polymer gels显示文摘Self-oscillating polymer gels driven by Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) chemical reaction are a new class of functional gels that have a wide range of potential applications (e.g., autonomously functioning membranes, actuate artificial muscles). However, the precise control of these gels has been an issue due to limited investigations of the influences of key system parameters on the characteristics of BZ gels. To address this deficiency, we studied the self-oscillating behavior of BZ gels using the nonline-ar dynamics theory and an Oregonator-like model, with focus placed upon the influences of various system parameters. The analysis of the oscillation phase indicated that the dynamic response of BZ gels represents the classical limit cycle oscillation. We then investigated the characteristics of the limit cycle oscillation and quantified the influences of key parameters (i.e., ini-tial reactant concentration, oxidation and reduction rate of catalyst, and response coefficient) on the self-oscillating behavior of BZ gels. The results demonstrated that sustained limit cycle oscillation of BZ gels can be achieved only when these key pa-rameters meet certain requirements, and that the pattern, period and amplitude of the oscillation are significantly influenced by these parameters. The results obtained in this study could enable the controlled self-oscillation of BZ gels system. | 18 | Malakoplakia of the colon associated with colonic adenocarcinoma diagnosed in colonic biopsies显示文摘Malakoplakia, typically involving the urinary tract, is an uncommon form of chronic in? ammation caused by chronic infections and characterized by accumulation of macrophages. It has also been found in many other sites such as the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, liver, lymph nodes, skin, respiratory tract, adrenal gland, vagina and brain. We present a case of a 64-year-old man referred to our hospital with cachexia and radiologic evidence of metastatic tumor of the liver. Colonoscopy revealed a large malignant - appearing polypoid mass of the ascending colon and multiple distinct polyps throughout the rest of the colon. Biopsies of the ascending colon mass confirmed the diagnosis of adenocarcinoma. Histological examination of two of the other polyps revealed malakoplakia which was characterized by aggregates of granular histiocytes with Michaelis - Gutmann bodies and histochemically confirmed with periodic acid-Schiff and von Kossa stains. This is a rare case diagnosed on endoscopic samples. The majority of reported cases were found in surgical specimens.
