Contribution of the ear and the flag leaf to grainfilling in durum wheat inferred from the carbon isotope signature: Genotypic and growing conditions effects显示文摘The ear, together with the flag leaf, is believed to play a major role as a source of assimilates during grain filling in C3cereals. However, the intrusive nature of most of the available methodologies prevents reaching conclusive results in this regard. This study compares the carbon isotope composition(d13C) in its natural abundance in the water‐soluble fractions of the flag leaf blade and the ear with the d13C of mature kernels to assess the relative contribution of both organs to grain filling in durum wheat(Triticum turgidum L. var.durum). The relative contribution of the ear was higher in landraces compared to modern cultivars, as well as in response to nitrogen fertilization and water stress. Such genotypic and environmentally driven differences were associated with changes in harvest index(HI), with the relative contribution of the ear being negatively associated with HI. In the case of the genotypic differences, the lower relative contribution of the ear in modern cultivars compared with landraces is probably associated with the appearance in the former of a certain amount of source limitation driven by a higher HI. In fact, the relative contribution of the ear was far more responsive to changes in HI in modern cultivars compared with landraces. | Rut Sanchez-Bragado Abdelhalim Elazab Bangwei Zhou Maria Dolors Serret Jordi Bort Maria Teresa Nieto-Taladriz José Luis Araus | 2014 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2014,56,5: | 10
Wheat ear carbon assimilation and nitrogen remobilization contribute significantly to grain yield显示文摘The role of wheat ears as a source of nitrogen(N)and carbon(C) in the grain filling process has barely been studied. To resolve this question, five wheat genotypes were labeled with15N-enriched nutrient solution. N remobilization and absorption were estimated via the nitrogen isotope composition of total organic matter and Rubisco. Gas exchange analyses showed that ear photosynthesis contributed substantially to grain filling in spite of the great loss of C due to respiration. Of the total kernel N, 64.7% was derived from the N acquired between sowing and anthesis, while the remaining35.3% was derived from the N acquired between anthesis and maturity. In addition, 1.87 times more N was remobilized to the developing kernel from the ear than from the flag leaf. The higher yielding genotypes showed an increased N remobilization to the kernel compared to the lower yielding genotypes. Inaddition, the higher yielding genotypes remobilized more N from the ears to the kernel than the lower yielding genotypes, while the lower yielding genotypes remobilized more N from the flag leaf to the kernel. Therefore, the ears contribute significantly toward fulfilling C and N demands during grain filling. | Bangwei Zhou Maria Dolores Serret Abdelhalim Elazab Jordi Bort Pie José Luis Araus Iker Aranjuelo álvaro Sanz-Sáez | 2016 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2016,58,11: | 9
Physiological traits contributed to the recent increase in yield potential of winter wheat from Henan Province, China显示文摘This experiment aims to test the traits responsible for the increase in yield potential of winter wheat released in Henan Province, China. Seven established cultivars released in the last 20 years and three advanced lines were assayed. The results showed that grain yield was positively correlated with harvest index(HI), kernel number per square meter, and aboveground biomass. In addition, the HI and aboveground biomass showed an increasing trend with the year of release. Therefore, we can conclude that bread wheat breeding advances during recent decades in Henan Province, China, have been achieved through an increase in HI, kernel number per square meter, and aboveground biomass. A higher d13C seems also to be involved in these advances, which suggests a progressive improvement in constitutive water use efficiency not associated with a trend towards lower stomatal conductance in the most recent genotypes. However, genetic advance Researchdoes not appear related to changes in photosynthesis rates on area basis when measured in the flag leaf or the spike, but only to a higher, whole‐spike photosynthesis. Results also indirectly support the concept that under potential yield conditions, the spike contributed more than the flag leaf to kernel formation. | Bangwei Zhou álvaro Sanz-Sáez Abdelhalim Elazab Tianmin Shen Rut Sánchez-Bragado Jordi Bort Maria Dolors Serret José Luis Araus | 2014 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2014,56,5: | 6
Cyclin A2:At the crossroads of cell cycle and cell invasion显示文摘Cyclin A2 is an essential regulator of the cell division cycle through the activation of kinases that participate to the regulation of S phase as well as the mitotic entry. However, whereas its degradation by the proteasome in mid mitosis was thought to be essential for mitosis to proceed, recent observations show that a small fraction of cyclin A2 persists beyond metaphase and is degraded by autophagy. Its implication in the control of cytoskeletal dynamics and cell movement has unveiled its role in the modulation of Rho A activity. Since this GTPase is involved in both cell rounding early in mitosis and later,in the formation of the cleavage furrow, this suggests that cyclin A2 is a novel actor in cytokinesis. Taken together, these data point to this cyclin as a potential mediator of cell-niche interactions whose dysregulation could be taken as a hallmark of metastasis. | Abdelhalim Loukil Caroline T Cheung Nawal Bendris Bénédicte Lemmers Marion Peter Jean Marie Blanchard | 2015 | World Journal of Biological Chemistry2015,6,4: | 6
Grain yield losses in yellow-rusted durum wheat estimated using digital and conventional parameters under field conditions显示文摘The biotrophic fungus Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici is the causal agent of the yellow rust in wheat. Between the years 2010–2013 a new strain of this pathogen(Warrior/Ambition),against which the present cultivated wheat varieties have no resistance, appeared and spread rapidly. It threatens cereal production in most of Europe. The search for sources of resistance to this strain is proposed as the most efficient and safe solution to ensure high grain production. This will be helped by the development of high performance and low cost techniques for field phenotyping. In this study we analyzed vegetation indices in the Red,Green, Blue(RGB) images of crop canopies under field conditions. We evaluated their accuracy in predicting grain yield and assessing disease severity in comparison to other field measurements including the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI), leaf chlorophyll content, stomatal conductance, and canopy temperature. We also discuss yield components and agronomic parameters in relation to grain yield and disease severity.RGB-based indices proved to be accurate predictors of grain yield and grain yield losses associated with yellow rust(R2= 0.581 and R2= 0.536, respectively), far surpassing the predictive ability of NDVI(R2= 0.118 and R2= 0.128, respectively). In comparison to potential yield, we found the presence of disease to be correlated with reductions in the number of grains per spike, grains per square meter, kernel weight and harvest index. Grain yield losses in the presence of yellow rust were also greater in later heading varieties. The combination of RGB-based indices and days to heading together explained 70.9% of the variability in grain yield and 62.7% of the yield losses. | Omar Vergara-Diaz Shawn C.Kefauver Abdelhalim Elazab Maria Teresa Nieto-Taladriz Jose Luis Araus | 2015 | The Crop Journal2015,3,3: | 3
Mechanical and Metallurgical Characterization of HSLA X70Welded Pipeline Steel Subjected to Successive Repairs显示文摘The aim of this work is to study the influence of successive weld repairs on the microstructure and the mechanical behavior of the heat-affected zone(HAZ) of an HSLA X70 steel. Detailed microstructural examination combined to grain size measurement showed that beyond the second weld repair, the microstructure of the HAZ undergoes significant change in the grain morphology and grain growth. The results of the X-ray diffraction analyzed using MAUD software indicated an increase in the crystallite size and a decrease in the dislocation density according to the number of weld repair operations. Consequently, a loss of mechanical properties, namely the yield strength and the toughness with the number of weld repairs, was recorded. Beyond the second weld repair operation, the properties of the welded joint do not fulfill the standards applied in piping industry. | Bouzid Maamache Mabrouk Bouabdallah Abdelhalim Brahimi Youcef Yahmi Billel Cheniti Brahim Mehdi | 2016 | Acta Metallurgica Sinica(English Letters)2016,29,6: | 2
Survival and outcomes for co-infection of chronic hepatitis C with and without cirrhosis and COVID-19: A multicenter retrospective study显示文摘BACKGROUND Chronic liver disease, particularly cirrhosis,is associated with worse outcomes in patients infected with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).AIM To assess outcomes of COVID-19 infection among patients with pre-existing hepatitis C with or without liver cirrhosis.METHODS This multicenter, retrospective cohort study included all cases of confirmed coinfection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and chronic hepatitis C with or without liver cirrhosis who were admitted to six hospitals(Al-Sahel Hospital,Al-Matareya Hospital,Al-Ahrar Hospital,Ahmed Maher Teaching Hospital,Al-Gomhoreya Hospital, and the National Hepatology and Tropical Medicine Research Institute)affiliated with the General Organization for Teaching Hospitals and Institutes in Egypt.Patients were recruited from May 1,2020,to July 31,2020.Demographic,laboratory,imaging features, and outcomes were collected.Multivariate regression analysis was performed to detect factors affecting mortality.RESULTS This retrospective cohort study included 125 patients with chronic hepatitis C and COVID-19 co-infection,of which 64(51.20%)had liver cirrhosis and 40(32.00%)died.Fever,cough,dyspnea,and fatigue were the most frequent symptoms in patients with liver cirrhosis.Cough, sore throat, fatigue, myalgia, and diarrhea were significantly more common in patients with liver cirrhosis than in noncirrhotic patients. There was no difference between patients with and without cirrhosis regarding comorbidities.Fifteen patients(23.40%)with liver cirrhosis presented with hepatic encephalopathy.Patients with liver cirrhosis were more likely than non-cirrhotic patients to have combined ground-glass opacities and consolidations in CT chest scans:28(43.75%)vs 4(6.55%),respectively(P value<0.001).These patients also were more likely to have severe COVID-19 infection, compared to patients without liver cirrhosis:29(45.31%)vs 11(18.04%),respectively(P value<0.003).Mortality was higher in patients with liver cirrhosis, compared to those with no cirrhosis:33(51.56%)vs 9(14.75%),respectively(P value<0.001).All patients in Child-Pugh class A recovered and were discharged.Cirrhotic mortality occurred among decompensated patients only.A multivariate regression analysis revealed the following independent factors affecting mortality:Male gender(OR 7.17,95%CI:2.19–23.51;P value=0.001),diabetes mellitus(OR 4.03,95%CI:1.49–10.91;P value=0.006),and liver cirrhosis(OR 1.103,95%CI:1.037–1.282;P value<0.0001).We found no differences in liver function,COVID-19 disease severity,or outcomes between patients who previously received direct-acting antiviral therapy(and achieved sustained virological response)and patients who did not receive this therapy.CONCLUSION Patients with liver cirrhosis are susceptible to higher severity and mortality if infected with COVID-19.Male gender, diabetes mellitus, and liver cirrhosis are independent factors associated with increased mortality risk. | Shimaa Afify Basem Eysa Fatma Abdel Hamid Omnia M Abo-Elazm Mohamed A Edris Rabab Maher Ahmed Abdelhalim Muhammad Mostafa Abdel Ghaffar Dalia A Omran Hend Ibrahim Shousha | 2021 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,42: | 2
Expression levels of pro-inflammatory interleukin-8 and certain antimicrobial peptides in concurrent with bacterial conjunctivitis显示文摘AIM:To detect the quantitative expression levels of the pro-inflammatory interleukin-8(IL8),antimicrobial peptides human beta defense-2(HBD2),and human beta defense-3(HBD3)genes in bacterial conjunctivitis.METHODS:The human conjunctival epithelial cells were obtained using the impression cytology technique from healthy controls and patients. The genes expression levels were determined utilizing a reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction(RT-q PCR).The contribution of causative agent type, the number of isolates and severity of clinical features,in the increase of genes expression was also determined.RESULTS:The RT-q PCR showed that IL8,HBD2,and HBD3 expression increased in bacterial conjunctivitis as compared to healthy control(P<0.001).In gram-negative bacterial conjunctivitis,HBD2 was highly up-regulated(P<0.001)compared to other types of bacterial conjunctivitis. In mixed bacterial conjunctivitis,a direct correlation between HBD2 up-regulation and HBD3 up-regulation was observed(P<0.05).The severity of clinical features was related to the up-regulation of IL8 and HBD2(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:IL8,HBD2,and HBD3 are immuneeffectors in infectious conjunctivitis.HBD2 is active during different bacterial conjunctivitis but is more released with gram-negative bacteria compared to gram-positive bacteria.HBD3 is an obvious defender in different bacterial conjunctivitis. | Alaa El-Dien Shawky Hosny Zeinab El-Demerdash El-Bazza Mohammed Abdelhalim Ramadan Maha Ahmed Shafik Mahmoud Ahmed Shafeek Rania Abdelmonem Khattab | 2021 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2021,14,5: | 2
