1Diabetes and peripheral artery disease:A review显示文摘Peripheral arterial disease(PAD)refers to partial or complete occlusion of the peripheral vessels of the upper and lower limbs.It usually occurs as part of systemic atherosclerosis in the coronary and cerebral arteries.The prevalence of PAD is expected to continue to increase in the foreseeable future owing to the rise in the occurrence of its major risk factors.Nonhealing ulcers,limb amputation and physical disability are some of its major complications.Diabetes mellitus(DM)remains a major risk for PAD,with DM patients having more than two-fold increased prevalence of PAD compared with the general population.The clinical presentation in people with DM also differs slightly from that in the general population.In addition,PAD in DM may lead to diabetic foot ulcers(DFUs),which precipitate hyperglycaemic emergencies and result in increased hospital admissions,reduced quality of life,and mortality.Despite the epidemiological and clinical importance of PAD,it remains largely under diagnosed and hence undertreated,possibly because it is largely asymptomatic.Emphasis has been placed on neuropathy as a cause of DFUs,however PAD is equally important.This review examines the epidemiology,pathophysiology and diagnosis of lower limb PAD in people with diabetes and relates these to the general population.It also highlights recent innovations in the management of PAD.David Olubukunmi Soyoye Olugbenga Olusola Abiodun Rosemary Temidayo Ikem Babatope Ayodeji Kolawole Anthony Olubunmi Akintomide 2021World Journal of Diabetes2021,12,6:10

3土荆芥的石油醚提取物及精油对冈比亚按蚊的杀虫活性(英文)显示文摘在室内条件下测试了土荆芥Chenopodium ambrosioides叶片的石油醚提取物及精油对冈比亚按蚊Anopheles gambiae0~2d龄成虫和1~4龄幼虫的毒性。每一龄期各取30头幼虫分别接触50,100,250,500,750和1000mg/L提取物和精油,于24h和48h后记录死亡幼虫的数目。30头成虫在密封的长方形玻璃笼子中分别接触0.8,1.6,2.4μL/L土荆芥精油蒸气,24h后记录死亡率。结果表明,测试的提取物和精油对冈比亚按蚊的各龄幼虫和成虫均具有毒性。48h致死中浓度(LC50)的测试结果表明,石油醚提取物对1龄幼虫的毒性最强(14.89mg/L),其次是对4龄幼虫(18.90mg/L),对3龄幼虫的毒性最低(183.77mg/L);精油对4龄幼虫毒性最强(36.62mg/L),其次是对1龄幼虫(90.75mg/L)。推算的土荆芥精油对冈比亚按蚊的LC50为1.01μL/L。本研究揭示了土荆芥对冈比亚按蚊的防治潜力。Abiodun A. 4Isolation and characterization of xanthine oxidase inhibitory constituents of Pyrenacantha staudtii显示文摘Six compounds have been isolated from the leaves of Pyrenacantha staudtii, two of which are new compounds. The new compounds have been characterized as kaempherol 3-O-β-rhamnopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (1) and 4-β-glucopyranosyl-(2-furyl)-5-methy-l,2-glucopyranoside phenylmethanone (2). The known compounds are 3-pyridinecarboxylic acid (3), β-sitosterol (4), sitosterol 3-O-β-glucopyranoside (5) and taraxerol (6). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic and chemical evidences. The two new compounds together with 3-pyridinecarboxylic acid showed significant in vitro xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity. 5Application of artificial intelligence to rock mechanics:An overview显示文摘Different artificial intelligence(AI)methods have been applied to various aspects of rock mechanics,but the fact that none of these methods have been used as a standard implies that doubt as to their generality and validity still exists.For this,a literature review of application of AI to the field of rock mechanics is presented.Comprehensive studies of the researches published in the top journals relative to the fields of rock mechanics,computer applications in engineering,and the textbooks were conducted.The performances of the AI methods that have been used in rock mechanics applications were evaluated.The literature review shows that AI methods have successfully been used to solve various problems in the rock mechanics field and they performed better than the traditional empirical,mathematical or statistical methods.However,their practical applicability is still an issue of concern as many of the existing AI models require some level of expertise before they can be used,because they are not in the form of tractable mathematical equations.Thus some advanced AI methods are still yet to be explored.The limited availability of dataset for the AI simulations is also identified as a major problem.The solutions to the identified problems and the possible future research focus were proposed in the study subsequently.Abiodun Ismail Lawal Sangki Kwon 2021Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2021,13,1:4
6Recurrent intestinal volvulus in midgut malrotation causing acute bowel obstruction: A case report显示文摘Intestinal malrotation occurs when there is a disruption in the normal embryological development of the bowel. The majority of patients present with clinical features in childhood, though rarely a first presentation can take place in adulthood. Recurrent bowel obstruction in patients with previous abdominal operation for midgut malrotation is mostly due to adhesions but very few reported cases have been due to recurrent volvulus. We present the case of a 22-year-old gentleman who had laparotomy in childhood for small bowel volvulus and then presented with acute bowel obstruction. Preoperative computerised tomography scan showed small bowel obstruction and features in keeping with midgut malrotation. Emergency laparotomy findings confirmed midgut malrotation with absent appendix, abnormal location of caecum, ascending colon and small bowel. In addition, there were small bowel volvulus and a segment of terminal ileal stricture. Limited right hemicolectomy was performed with excellent postoperative recovery. This case is presented to illustrate a rare occurrence and raise an awareness of the possibility of dreadful recurrent volvulus even several years following an initial Ladd's procedure for midgut malrotation. Therefore, one will need to exercise a high index of suspicion and this becomes very crucial in order to ensure prompt surgical intervention and thereby preventing an attendant bowel ischaemia with its associated high fatality.Fayed Sheikh Vickna Balarajah Abraham Abiodun Ayantunde 2013World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery2013,5,3:3
7Metal contamination assessment in the urban stream sediments and tributaries of coastal area southwest Nigeria显示文摘A geochemical assessment of the fifty surface stream sediments from Ikorodu Southwest Nigeria was carried out to determine the level of contamination. The sediments were dried, disaggregated and sieved to \75 lm fraction for geochemical analysis, using the aqua-regia digestion technique and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Major elements showed the following trend Fe [ Al [ Ca [ Na [ Mg [ K [ P [ Ti and were below the average shale concentration, except for Na in one sample.Results from factor and correlation analyses showed two groups of trace elements Ni, Co, Mn, U, Th, Sr, V, La, Cr, Ba,Sc, Ga, Cs, Nb, Rb, Y,Ce and Mo, Pb, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, Sn, Zr,which were from geogenic and anthropogenic sources, respectively. The enrichment factor showed that Cd, Bi, Pt, Mo and Ag were, for all samples, within background concentrations, except those of the Ogun River and the Owode Onirin, which showed significant enrichment of Cd, Zn, Cu,Pb and Ag, depletion to minimal enrichment for Bi, Mo and moderate enrichment for Pt. The contamination degree ranged between 1.25 and 143.79. The highest value was found at Owode Onirin and the lowest, at Igbonla 7. The geoaccumulation index showed that all the stream sediments ranged between practically uncontaminated to moderately to highly contaminated—with Pb, Sn, Zn, Cd, Cu, Cr, Zr and Ba. 8Blast-induced ground vibration prediction in granite quarries:An application of gene expression programming,ANFIS,and sine cosine algorithm optimized ANN显示文摘Blasting of rocks has intrinsic environmental impacts such as ground vibration,which can interfere with the safety of lives and property.Hence,accurate prediction of the environmental impacts of blasting is imperative as the empirical models are not accurate as evident in the literature.Therefore,there is need to consider some robust predictive models for accurate prediction results.Gene expression programming(GEP),adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system(ANFIS),and sine cosine algorithm optimized artificial neural network(SCA-ANN)models are proposed for predicting the blast-initiated ground vibration in five granite quarries.The input parameters into the models are the distance from the point of blasting to the point of measurement(D),the weight of charge per delay(W),rock density(q),and the Schmidt rebound hardness(SRH)value while peak particle velocity(PPV)is the targeted output.100 datasets were used in developing the proposed models.The performance of the proposed models was examined using the coefficient of determination(R2)and error analysis.The R2 values obtained for the GEP,ANFIS,and SCA-ANN models are 0.989,0.997,and 0.999,respectively,while their errors are close to zero.The proposed models are compared with an empirical model and are found to outperform the empirical model.Abiodun Ismail Lawal Sangki Kwon Olaide Sakiru Hammed Musa Adebayo Idris 2021International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2021,31,2:3
9Efficacy of praziquantel in the treatment of Schistosoma haematobium infection among school-age children in rural communities of Abeokuta, Nigeria显示文摘Background:Chemotherapy with praziquantel(PZQ)has been the cornerstone of schistosomiasis control over the last two decades.Being the only available drug for the treatment of over 200 million people worldwide,continuous monitoring of PZQ efficacy under the pressure of widespread use is therefore advocated.Methods:The efficacy of taking two doses of oral PZQ for the treatment of Schistosoma haematobium was examined among school children in Nigeria.Urine specimens were collected from 350 school children and examined using the filtration technique.Blood was collected for packed cell volume(PCV)estimation,and the weight and height of each child were estimated.S.haematobium egg positive pupils were treated with two oral doses of PZQ at 40 mg/kg with a four-week interval in between.Drug efficacy was determined based on the egg reduction rate(ERR).Results:Among 350 school children,245(70.0%)-of which 132 were males and 113 were females,with an age range of 4 to 15 years-were diagnosed with S.haematobium.All the 245 infected children received a single oral dose of 40 mg/kg PZQ twice with a four-week interval in between and were followed up for 12 weeks.At four,eight and twelve weeks post treatment,the ERR was 57.1%,77.6%and 100%,respectively.The ERR was significantly higher among the children with a light infection compared to those with a heavy infection.One hundred and twenty-one children were egg negative at four weeks post treatment,among which 1(6.3)and 120(52.4%)had heavy and light infections,respectively.Following the second round of treatment,the cure rate at eight weeks and twelve weeks was 85.3%and 100%,respectively.Conclusion:This study demonstrated the efficacy of taking two doses of oral PZQ for the treatment of urinary schistosomiasis among school children in Nigeria.Olusola Ojurongbe Olawunwi Risqat Sina-Agbaje Abass Busari Patricia Nkem Okorie Taiwo Adetola Ojurongbe Akeem Abiodun Akindele 2014Infectious Diseases of Poverty2014,3,1:3
10Medicinal uses,phytochemistry and pharmacology of Picralima nitida(Apocynaceae) in tropical diseases:A review显示文摘Picralima nitida Durand and Hook,(fam.Apocynaceae)is a West African plant with varied applications in African folk medicine.Various parts of the plant have been employed ethnomedicinally as remedy for fever,hypertension,jaundice,dysmenorrheal,gastrointestinal disorders and malaria.In order to reveal its full pharmacological and therapeutic potentials,die present review focuses on the current medicinal uses,phytochemistry,pharmacological and toxicological activities of this species.Literature survey on scientific journals,books as well as electronic sources have shown the isolation of alkaloids,tannins,polyphenols and steroids from different parts of the plant,pharmacological studies revealed that the extract or isolated compounds from this species posses analgesic,anti-inflammatory,hypoglyceamic,hypotensive,antiplasmodial,antimicrobial,antiulcer and antitumorigenic activities.Results from various scientific investigations to date have revealed the potential of the extract from the plant or isolated compounds for use in the treatment and prevention of various kinds of human diseases.However,further studies on the extracts and pure compounds from this species is required to completely assess its phytoc-hemical,pharmacological and toxicological profile as well as the mechanism of action behind these pharmacological activities exhibited by the compounds isolated from this species.Osayemwenre Erharuyi Abiodun Falodun Peter Langer 2014Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2014,7,1:2
