1Efficacy of praziquantel in the treatment of Schistosoma haematobium infection among school-age children in rural communities of Abeokuta, Nigeria显示文摘Background:Chemotherapy with praziquantel(PZQ)has been the cornerstone of schistosomiasis control over the last two decades.Being the only available drug for the treatment of over 200 million people worldwide,continuous monitoring of PZQ efficacy under the pressure of widespread use is therefore advocated.Methods:The efficacy of taking two doses of oral PZQ for the treatment of Schistosoma haematobium was examined among school children in Nigeria.Urine specimens were collected from 350 school children and examined using the filtration technique.Blood was collected for packed cell volume(PCV)estimation,and the weight and height of each child were estimated.S.haematobium egg positive pupils were treated with two oral doses of PZQ at 40 mg/kg with a four-week interval in between.Drug efficacy was determined based on the egg reduction rate(ERR).Results:Among 350 school children,245(70.0%)-of which 132 were males and 113 were females,with an age range of 4 to 15 years-were diagnosed with S.haematobium.All the 245 infected children received a single oral dose of 40 mg/kg PZQ twice with a four-week interval in between and were followed up for 12 weeks.At four,eight and twelve weeks post treatment,the ERR was 57.1%,77.6%and 100%,respectively.The ERR was significantly higher among the children with a light infection compared to those with a heavy infection.One hundred and twenty-one children were egg negative at four weeks post treatment,among which 1(6.3)and 120(52.4%)had heavy and light infections,respectively.Following the second round of treatment,the cure rate at eight weeks and twelve weeks was 85.3%and 100%,respectively.Conclusion:This study demonstrated the efficacy of taking two doses of oral PZQ for the treatment of urinary schistosomiasis among school children in Nigeria.Olusola Ojurongbe Olawunwi Risqat Sina-Agbaje Abass Busari Patricia Nkem Okorie Taiwo Adetola Ojurongbe Akeem Abiodun Akindele 2014Infectious Diseases of Poverty2014,3,1:3

14Evaluation of Dietary Diversity, Nutrient Adequacy and Nutritional Status of Pre-school Children in Three Local Government Areas of Ibadan, Nigeria显示文摘Malnutrition remains a public health challenge in Nigeria, partly due to poor diversity of diets. Pre-school children are among the vulnerable groups who are mostly affected in communities, as their nutritional status is largely influenced by the quality of diets they consume. Most studies aimed at malnutrition among under-five children have been focused on meeting protein-energy needs without much consideration for micronutrients needs. Dietary diversity has been advocated as a means of meeting nutritional requirements of children. This study was designed to assess the dietary diversity in relation to nutrient adequacy and nutritional status of pre-school children in Ibadan. The descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among 552 pre-schoolers aged 3-5 years in Egbeda, Ona-Ara and Ido Three Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Ibadan metropolis. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain information on socio-demographic characteristics of mother and child. Nutritional status was determined using anthropometric indices. Food frequency questionnaire of 9 food groups was used to obtain dietary diversity scores (DDS) classified as low (< 4 food groups), average (4 to 6 food groups), and high (≥ 7 food groups);and 24-hour dietary recall was used to obtain nutrient adequacy of diet. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and level of significance set at p < 0.05. Malnutrition among pre-schoolers was more prevalent among males (22.0%) than females (18.4%). Stunting was the most prevalent form of malnutrition (26.8%). The DDS of pre-schoolers was low (3.2 ± 1.9). The most consumed food group was cereals, roots and tubers (83.9%) while fruit was least consumed (6.5%). Nutrient adequacy ratio for carbohydrate was highest (1.2 ± 0.2) and least in fibre (0.2 ± 0.2), while mean adequacy ratio for food consumed was (0.72 ± 0.13). There was weak relationship between DDS and nutritional status—wasting (r =-0.067), stunting (r =-0.002) and underweight (r =-0.056). Low dietary diversity and malnutrition existed among pre-school children in the three LGAs. 15Colorectal carcinoma in Lagos and Sagamu,Southwest Nigeria:A histopathological review显示文摘AIM: To study the frequency, gender and age distribution as well as pathological characteristics of colorectal carcinoma (CRC) in Lagos and Sagamu in SW Nigeria. METHODS: This is a retrospective pathological review of histologically diagnosed CRC from 5 laboratories inLagos & Sagamu. The clinical data, such as age, sex and clinical summary were extracted from demographic information. Cases of anal cancer were excluded from this study. RESULTS: There were 420 cases (237 males and 183 females) of CRC. It peaked in the 60-69 year age group (mean: 50.7; SD: 16.2), M:F ratio 1.3:1 and 23% occurred below 40 years. The majority was well to moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma 321 (76.4%), mucinous carcinoma 45 (10.7%) and signet ring carcinoma 5 (1.2%), and more common in patients under 40 years compared to well differentiated tumors. The recto-sigmoid colon was the most common site (58.6%). About 51% and 34% of cases presented at TNM stages Ⅱ and Ⅲ, respectively. CONCLUSION: CRC is the commonest malignant gastrointestinal (GIT) tumor most commonly located in the recto-sigmoid region. 16Data-driven modeling of power generation for a coal power plant under cycling显示文摘Increased penetration of renewables for power generation has negatively impacted the dynamics of conventional fossil fuel-based power plants.The power plants operating on the base load are forced to cycle,to adjust to the fluctuating power demands.This results in an inefficient operation of the coal power plants,which leads up to higher operating losses.To overcome such operational challenge associated with cycling and to develop an optimal process control,this work analyzes a set of models for predicting power generation.Moreover,the power generation is intrinsically affected by the state of the power plant components,and therefore our model development also incorporates additional power plant process variables while forecasting the power generation.We present and compare multiple state-of-the-art forecasting data-driven methods for power generation to determine the most adequate and accurate model.We also develop an interpretable attention-based transformer model to explain the importance of process variables during training and forecasting.The trained deep neural network(DNN)LSTM model has good accuracy in predicting gross power generation under various prediction horizons with/without cycling events and outperforms the other models for long-term forecasting.The DNN memory-based models show significant superiority over other state-of-the-art machine learning models for short,medium and long range predictions.The transformer-based model with attention enhances the selection of historical data for multi-horizon forecasting,and also allows to interpret the significance of internal power plant components on the power generation.This newly gained insights can be used by operation engineers to anticipate and monitor the health of power plant equipment during high cycling periods.Himanshu Sharma Laurentiu Marinovici Veronica Adetola Herbert T.Schaef 2023Energy and AI2023,11,1:0
