3Pollutant removal from municipal wastewater employing baffled subsurface flow and integrated surface flow-floating treatment wetlands显示文摘This article reports pollutant removal performances of baffled subsurface flow, and integrated surface flow-floating treatment wetland units, when arranged in series for the treatment of municipal wastewater in Bangladesh. The wetland units(of the hybrid system) included organic, inorganic media, and were planted with nineteen types of macrophytes. The wetland train was operated under hydraulic loading fluctuation and seasonal variation. The performance analyses(across the wetland units) illustrated simultaneous denitrification and organics removal rates in the first stage vertical flow wetland, due to organic carbon leaching from the employed organic media. Higher mean organics removal rates(656.0 g COD/(m2·day)) did not completely inhibit nitrification in the first stage vertical flow system; such pattern could be linked to effective utilization of the trapped oxygen, as the flow was directed throughout the media by the baffle walls. Second stage horizontal flow wetland showed enhanced biodegradable organics removal, which depleted organic carbon availability for denitrification. The final stage integrated wetland system allowed further nitrogen removal from wastewater, via nutrient uptake by plant roots(along with nitrification), and generation of organic carbon(by the dead macrophytes) to support denitrification. The system achieved higher E. coli mortality through protozoa predation, E. coli oxidation, and destruction by UV radiation. 4Vitamin D in esophageal cancer: Is there a role for chemoprevention?显示文摘Vitamin D has emerged as a promising anti-cancer agent due to its diverse biological effects on tumor differentiation, apoptosis and suppression of cellular proliferation. Current evidence suggests a protective role of vitamin D in colon cancer. The effect of vitamin D on esophageal cancer remains controversial. Multiple studies investigated the association between vitamin D and esophageal cancer, employing different modes of assessment of vitamin D status such as serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, vitamin D dietary intake or exposure to ultraviolet B(UVB) radiation. Genetic variations of the vitamin D receptor(VDR) gene and VDR expression in esophageal specimens have also been investigated. Ecological studies evaluating exposure to UVB radiation yielded an inverse correlation with esophageal cancer. When vitamin D dietary intake was assessed, direct association with esophageal cancer was observed. However, circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations showed inconsistent results. In this review article, we present a detailed summary of the current data on the effects of vitamin D on various histological subtypes of esophageal cancer and their precursor lesions. Well-powered prospective studies with accurate measurement of vitamin D status are needed before chemoprevention with vitamin D is recommended, as current evidence does not support a chemopreventive role of vitamin D against esophageal cancer. 5Preparation of Chitin-PLA laminated composite for implantable application显示文摘The present study explores the possibilities of using locally available inexpensive waste prawn shell derived chitin reinforced and bioabsorbable polylactic acid(PLA)laminated composites to develop new materials with excellent mechanical and thermal properties for implantable application such as in bone or dental implant.Chitin at different concentration(1e20%of PLA)reinforced PLA films(CTP)were fabricated by solvent casting process and laminated chitin-PLA composites(LCTP)were prepared by laminating PLA film(obtained by hot press method)with CTP also by hot press method at 160C.The effect of variation of chitin concentration on the resulting laminated composite's behavior was investigated.The detailed physico-mechanical,surface morphology and thermal were assessed with different characterization technique such as FT-IR,XRD,SEM and TGA.The FTIR spectra showed the characteristic peaks for chitin and PLA in the composites.SEM images showed an excellent dispersion of chitin in the films and composites.Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA)showed that the complete degradation of chitin,PLA film,5%chitin reinforced PLA film(CTP2)and LCTP are 98%,95%,87%and 98%respectively at temperature of 500C.The tensile strength of the LCTP was found 25.09 MPa which is significantly higher than pure PLA film(18.55 MPa)and CTP2 film(8.83 MPa).After lamination of pure PLA and CTP2 film,the composite(LCTP)yielded 0.265e1.061%water absorption from 30 min to 24 h immerse in water that is much lower than PLA and CTP.The increased mechanical properties of the laminated films with the increase of chitin content indicated good dispersion of chitin into PLA and strong interfacial actions between the polymer and chitin.The improvement of mechanical properties and the results of antimicrobial and cytotoxicity of the composites also evaluated and revealed the composite would be a suitable candidate for implant application in biomedical sector.Romana Nasrin Shanta Biswas Taslim Ur Rashid Sanjida Afrin Rumana Akhter Jahan Papia Haque Mohammed Mizanur Rahman 2017Bioactive Materials2017,2,4:4
6Epalrestat improves motor symptoms by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the reserpine induced mouse model of Parkinson’s disease显示文摘Background:Parkinson's disease(PD)is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting a large number of elderly people worldwide.The current therapies for PD are symptom-based;they do not provide a cure but improve the quality of life.Muscular dysfunction is the hallmark clinical feature of PD and oxidative stress and inflammation play a critical role in its pathogenesis.Epalrestat is used for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy and is known to improve antioxidative defense mechanisms in the CNS.Therefore,in this study,we investigated the role of Epalrestat in the reserpine induced mouse model of PD.Method:We used Swiss Albino mice for the PD model and tested for akinesia/bradykinesia,muscular rigidity,palpebral ptosis,and tremor,as well as conducting swim and open field tests.Brain samples were used to determine oxidative stress parameters and infiltration of immune cells.Results:Epalrestat treatment significantly improved akinesia and bradykinesia,muscular dysfunctions,tremor level,and gait functions compared to the reserpine group.It also improved the latency in the swim test.Eplarestat significantly reduced lipid peroxidation and NO concentration in different brain tissues and increased the activity of antioxidative enzymes,glutathione,catalase,and superoxide dismutase.Furthermore,Epalrestat reduced neuroinflammation by reducing the number of infiltrating immune cells.Conclusion:Eplarestat improves muscular dysfunction in PD by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.Md.Mahbubur Rahman Rupali Rani Chakraborti Md.Abdullah Potol Ariful Haque Abir Ozayra Sharmin Mahabub Alam Md.Fazlur Rahman Khan Rownock Afrin Humayra Jannat Rasiqh Wadud Zaki Farhad Habib 2020Animal Models and Experimental Medicine2020,3,1:3
7Gastric per-oral endoscopic myotomy: Current status and future directions显示文摘Gastroparesis, or symptomatic delayed gastric emptying in the absence of mechanical obstruction, is a challenging and increasingly identified syndrome. Medical options are limited and the only medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treatment of gastroparesis is metoclopramide, although other agents are frequently used off label. With this caveat, first-line treatments for gastroparesis include dietary modifications, antiemetics and promotility agents, although these therapies are limited by suboptimal efficacy and significant medication side effects. Treatment of patients that fail first-line treatments represents a significant therapeutic challenge. Recent advances in endoscopic techniques have led to the development of a promising novel endoscopic therapy for gastroparesis via endoscopic pyloromyotomy, also referred to as gastric per-oral endoscopic myotomy or per-oral endoscopic pyloromyotomy. 8A concise, practical guide to diagnostic assessment for mast cell activation disease显示文摘As recognition of mast cell(MC) involvement in a range of chronic inflammatory disorders has increased, diagnosticians' suspicions of MC activation disease(MCAD) in their chronically mysteriously inflamed patients have similarly increased. It is now understood that the various forms of systemic mastocytosis- diseases of inappropriate activation and proliferation of MCs seemingly driven by a small set of rare, usually constitutively activating mutations in assorted MC regulatory elements-comprise merely the tip of the MCAD iceberg, whereas the far larger and far more clinically heterogeneous(and thus more difficult to recognize) bulk of the iceberg consists of assorted forms of MC activation syndrome(MCAS) which manifest little to no abnormal MC proliferation and may originate from a far more heterogeneous set of MC mutations. It is reasonable to suspect MCAD when symptoms and signs of MC activation are present and no other diagnosis better accounting for the full range of findings is present. Initial laboratory assessment should include not only routine blood counts and serum chemistries but also a serum total tryptase level, which helps direct further evaluation for mastocytosis vs MCAS. Appropriate tissue examinations are needed to diagnose mastocytosis, while elevated levels of relatively specific mast cell mediators are sought to support diagnosis of MCAS. Whether assessing for mastocytosis or MCAS, testing is fraught with potential pitfalls which can easily yield false negatives leading to erroneous rejection of diagnostic consideration of MCAD in spite of a clinical history highly consistent with MCAD.
