2Synthesis, properties, and applications of graphene oxide/reduced graphene oxide and their nanocomposites显示文摘Thanks to their remarkable mechanical, electrical, thermal, and barrier properties, graphene-based nanocomposites have been a hot area of research in the past decade. Because of their simple top-down synthesis, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have opened new possibilities for gas barrier, membrane separation, and stimuli-response characteristics in nanocomposites. Herein, we review the synthesis techniques most commonly used to produce these graphene derivatives, discuss how synthesis affects their key material properties, and highlight some examples of nanocomposites with unique and impressive properties. We specifically highlight their performances in separation applications, stimuli-responsive materials, anti-corrosion coatings, and energy storage. Finally, we discuss the outlook and remaining challenges in the field of practical industrial-scale production and use of graphene-derivative-based polymer nanocomposites.Andrew T. 4A matched-pair analysis of laparoscopic versus open pancreaticoduodenectomy: oncological outcomes using Leeds Pathology Protocol显示文摘BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy(LPD)is a safe procedure. Oncological safety of LPD is still a matter for debate. This study aimed to compare the oncological outcomes,in terms of adequacy of resection and recurrence rate following LPD and open pancreaticoduodenectomy(OPD).METHODS: Between November 2005 and April 2009, 12LPDs(9 ampullary and 3 distal common bile duct tumors)were performed. A cohort of 12 OPDs were matched for age,gender, body mass index(BMI) and American Society of Anesthesiologists(ASA) score and tumor site.RESULTS: Mean tumor size LPD vs OPD(19.8 vs 19.2 mm,P=0.870). R0 resection was achieved in 9 LPD vs 8 OPD(P=1.000). The mean number of metastatic lymph nodes and total number resected for LPD vs OPD were 1.1 vs 2.1(P=0.140)and 20.7 vs 18.5(P=0.534) respectively. Clavien complications grade I/II(5 vs 8), III/IV(2 vs 6) and pancreatic leak(2 vs 1)were statistically not significant(LPD vs OPD). The mean high dependency unit(HDU) stay was longer in OPD(3.7 vs 1.4 days,P<0.001). There were 2 recurrences each in LPD and OPD(logrank,P=0.983). Overall mortality for LPD vs OPD was 3 vs 6(log-rank, P=0.283) and recurrence-related mortality was 2 vs 1.There was one death within 30 days in the OPD group secondary to severe sepsis and none in the LPD group.CONCLUSIONS: Compared to open procedure, LPD achieved a similar rate of R0 resection, lymph node harvest and longterm recurrence for tumors less than 2 cm. 8Effects of Glomus mosseae on the toxicity of heavy metals to Vicia faba显示文摘A glasshouse pot experiment was conducted to investigate effects of th e arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus mosseae on the growth of Vicia faba and t oxicity induced by heavy metals (HMs) (Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd) in a field soil contam inated by a mixture of these metals. There was also uninoculation treatment (NM) simultaneously. Mycorrhizal (GM) plants have significantly increased growth and tolerance to toxicity induced by heavy metals compared with NM plants. P uptake was significantly increased in GM plants. Mycorrhizal symbiosis reduced the tra nsportation of HMs from root to shoot by immobilizing HMs in the mycorrhizal, sh own by increasing the ratios of HMs from root to shoot. Oxidative stress, which can induce DNA damage, is an important mechanism of heavy metal toxicity. GM tre atment decreased oxidative stress by intricating antioxidative systems such as p eroxidases and non-enzymic systems including soluble protein. 13Development of a 100 J,10 Hz laser for compression experiments at the High Energy Density instrument at the European XFEL显示文摘In this paper we review the design and development of a 100 J, 10 Hz nanosecond pulsed laser, codenamed DiPOLE100 X,being built at the Central Laser Facility(CLF). This 1 kW average power diode-pumped solid-state laser(DPSSL) is based on a master oscillator power amplifier(MOPA) design, which includes two cryogenic gas cooled amplifier stages based on DiPOLE multi-slab ceramic Yb:YAG amplifier technology developed at the CLF. The laser will produce pulses between 2 and 15 ns in duration with precise, arbitrarily selectable shapes, at pulse repetition rates up to 10 Hz, allowing real-time shape optimization for compression experiments. 16Challenges in Understanding Genome-Wide DNA Methylation显示文摘DNA methylation is a chemical modification of the bases in genomes. This modification, most frequently found at CpG dinucleotides in eukaryotes, has been identified as having multiple critical functions in broad and diverse species of animals and plants, while mysteriously appears to be lacking from several other well-studied species. DNA methylation has well known and important roles in genome stability and defense, its pattern change highly correlates with gene regulation. Much evidence has linked abnormal DNA methylation to human diseases. Most prominently, aberrant DNA methylation is a common feature of cancer genomes. Elucidating the precise functions of DNA methylation therefore has great biomedical significance. Here we provide an update on large-scale experimental technologies for detecting DNA methylation on a genomic scale.
