| 1 | Lignin Biosynthesis Studies in Plant Tissue Cultures显示文摘Lignin, a phenolic polymer abundant in cell walls of certain cell types, has given challenges to scientists studying its structure or biosynthesis. In plants lignified tissues are distributed between other, non-lignified tissues. Characterization of native lignin in the cell wall has been difficult due to the highly cross-linked nature of the wall components. Model systems, like plant tissue cultures with tracheary element differentiation or extracellular lignin formation, have provided useful information related to lignin structure and several aspects of lignin formation. For example, many enzyme activities in the phenylpropanoid pathway have been first identified in tissue cultures. | 2 | Contribution of precursor compounds to the release of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFASs) from waste water treatment plants(WWTPs)显示文摘Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFASs) are ubiquitous in sludge and water from waste water treatment plants, as a result of their incorporation in everyday products and industrial processes. In this study, we measured several classes of persistent PFASs,precursors, transformation intermediates, and newly identified PFASs in influent and effluent sewage water and sludge from three municipal waste water treatment plants in Sweden, sampled in 2015. For sludge, samples from 2012 and 2014 were analyzed as well.Levels of precursors in sludge exceeded those of perfluoroalkyl acids and sulfonic acids(PFCAs and PFSAs), in 2015 the sum of polyfluoroalkyl phosphoric acid esters(PAPs) were 15–20 ng/g dry weight, the sum of fluorotelomer sulfonic acids(FTSAs) was 0.8–1.3 ng/g,and the sum of perfluorooctane sulfonamides and ethanols ranged from non-detected to 3.2 ng/g. Persistent PFSAs and PFCAs were detected at 1.9–3.9 ng/g and 2.4–7.3 ng/g dry weight, respectively. The influence of precursor compounds was further demonstrated by an observed substantial increase for a majority of the persistent PFCAs and PFSAs in water after waste water treatment. Perfluorohexanoic acid(PFHxA), perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid(PFHxS), and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid(PFOS)had a net mass increase in all WWTPs, with mean values of 83%, 28%, 37% and 58%,respectively. | 3 | Norway spruce(Picea abies) laccases:Characterization of a laccase in a lignin-forming tissue culture显示文摘Secondarily thickened cell walls of water-conducting vessels and tracheids and support-giving sclerenchyma cells contain lignin that makes the cell wal s water impermeable and strong. To what extent laccases and peroxidases contribute to lignin biosynthesis in muro is under active evaluation. We performed an in silico study of Norway spruce(Picea abies(L.)Karst.) laccases utilizing available genomic data. As many as 292 laccase encoding sequences(genes, gene fragments, and pseudogenes) were detected in the spruce genome. Out of the 112 genes annotated as laccases, 79 are expressed at some level. We isolated five full-length laccase c DNAs from developing xylem and an extracellular lignin-forming cell culture of spruce. In addition, we purified and biochemically characterized one culture medium laccase from the lignin-forming cell culture.This laccase has an acidic p H optimum(p H 3.8–4.2) for coniferyl alcohol oxidation. It has a high af finity to coniferyl alcohol with an apparent K m value of 3.5 m M; however, the laccase has a lowe catalytic ef ficiency(V max/K m) for coniferyl alcohol oxidation compared with some purified culture medium peroxidases. | 6 | Long-term overlap of social and genetic structure in free-ranging house mice reveals dynamic seasonal and group size effects显示文摘Associating with relatives in social groups can bring benefits such as reduced risk of aggression and increased likelihood of cooperation.Competition among relatives over limited resources,on the other hand,can induce individuals to alter their patterns of association.Population density might further affect the costs and benefits of associating with relatives by altering resource competition or by changing the structure of social groups;preventing easy association with relatives.Consequently,the overlap between genetic and social structure is expected to decrease with increasing population size,as well as during times of increased breeding activity.Here,we use multi-layer network techniques to quantify the similarity between long-term,high resolution genetic,and behavioral data from a large population of free-ranging house mice(Mus musculus domesticus),studied over 10years.We infer how the benefit of associating with genetically similar individuals might fluctuate in relation to breeding behavior and environmental conditions.We found a clear seasonal effect,with decreased overlap between social and genetic structure during summer months,characterized by high temperatures and high breeding activity.Though the effect of overall population size was relatively weak,we found a clear decrease in the overlap between genetic similarity and social associations within larger groups.As well as longer-term within-group changes,these results reveal population-wide short-term shifts in how individuals associate with relatives.Our study suggests that resource competition modifies the trade-off between the costs and benefits of interacting with relatives. | Julian C.EVANS Anna K.LINDHOLM Barbara KöNIG | 2021 | Current Zoology2021,67,1: | 2 |
