1Colitis cystica profunda of the rectum: An unexpected operative finding显示文摘Colitis cystic profunda is a rare entity benign condition of the colon and rectum that can mimic suspicious polyps or malignancy. The commonest sites of affectation are the rectum and the sigmoid colon but it can be unusually widely distributed in the colon. The aetiology of this condition is not fully elucidated and confident diagnosis can only be made on histological features. We hereby describe a patient who presented with significant rectal symptoms and an unexpected finding of a submucosal mucous cyst mimicking a suspicious rectal polyp and highlighted its significance and the review of the literature.Abraham A Ayantunde Claire Strauss Malathi Sivakkolunthu Anu Malhotra 2016World Journal of Clinical Cases2016,4,7:3

3Emerging role of caldesmon in cancer:A potential biomarker for colorectal cancer and other cancers显示文摘Colorectal cancer(CRC) is a devastating disease, mainly because of metastasis. As a result, there is a need to better understand the molecular basis of invasion and metastasis and to identify new biomarkers and therapeutic targets to aid in managing these tumors. The actin cytoskeleton and actin-binding proteins are known to play an important role in the process of cancer metastasis because they control and execute essential steps in cell motility and contractility as well as cell division. Caldesmon(CaD) is an actin-binding protein encoded by the CALD1 gene as multiple transcripts that mainly encode two protein isoforms: High-molecular-weight CaD, expressed in smooth muscle, and low-molecular weight CaD(l-CaD), expressed in nonsmooth muscle cells. According to our comprehensive review of the literature, CaD, particularly l-CaD, plays a key role in the development, metastasis, and resistance to chemoradiotherapy in colorectal, breast, and urinary bladder cancers and gliomas, among other malignancies. CaD is involved in many aspects of the carcinogenic hallmarks, including epithelial mesenchymal transition via transforming growth factor-beta signaling, angiogenesis, resistance to hormonal therapy, and immune evasion. Recent data show that CaD is expressed in tumor cells as well as in stromal cells, such as cancerassociated fibroblasts, where it modulates the tumor microenvironment to favor the tumor. Interestingly, CaD undergoes selective tumor-specific splicing, and the resulting isoforms are generally not expressed in normal tissues, making these transcripts ideal targets for drug design. In this review, we will analyze these features of CaD with a focus on CRC and show how the currently available data qualify CaD as a potential candidate for targeted therapy in addition to its role in the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer.Alya R Alnuaimi Vidhya A Nair Lara J Bou Malhab Eman Abu-Gharbieh Anu Vinod Ranade Gianfranco Pintus Mohamad Hamad Hauke Busch Jutta Kirfel Rifat Hamoudi Wael M Abdel-Rahman 2022World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2022,14,9:2
4Heart failure in COVID-19 patients:Critical care experience显示文摘Patients with heart failure(HF)may be at a higher risk of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)infection and may have a worse outcome due to their comorbid conditions and advanced age.In this narrative review,we aim to study the interaction between COVID-19 and HF from a critical care perspective. We performed a systematic search for studies that reported HF and critical carerelated outcomes in COVID-19 patients in the PubMed and Medline databases. From a total of 1050 papers,we identified 26 that satisfied the eligibility criteria for our review.Data such as patient demographics,HF,intensive care unit(ICU)admission, management, and outcome were extracted from these studies and analyzed. We reported outcomes in heart-transplant patients with COVID-19 separately. In hospitalized patients with COVID-19,the prevalence of HF varied between 4%and 21%.The requirement for ICU admission was between 8%and 33%.HF patients with COVID-19 had an overall mortality rate between 20%and 40%.We identified that HF is an independent predictor of mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, and patients with HF were more likely to require ventilation,ICU admission and develop complications.Patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction did worse than those with HF with midrange ejection fraction, and HF with preserved ejection fraction.COVID-19 patients with HF should be identified early and managed aggressively in an attempt to improve outcomes in this cohort of patients.Kevin John John Ajay K Mishra Chidambaram Ramasamy Anu A George Vijairam Selvaraj Amos Lal 2022World Journal of Virology2022,11,1:1
