1Efficient,high-CRI white LEDs by combining traditional phosphors with cadmium-free InP/ZnSe red quantum dots显示文摘Quantum dots(QDs) offer an interesting alternative for traditional phosphors in on-chip light-emitting diode(LED) configurations.Earlier studies showed that the spectral efficiency of white LEDs with high color rendering index(CRI) values could be considerably improved by replacing red-emitting nitride phosphors with narrowband QDs.However, the red QDs in these studies were cadmium-based,which is a restricted element in the EU and certain other countries. The use of InP-based QDs,the most promising Cd-free alternative,is often presented as an inferior solution because of the broader linewidth of these QDs.However, while narrow emission lines are the key to display applications that require a large color gamut, the spectral efficiency penalty of this broader emission is limited for lighting applications. Here,we report efficient,high-CRI white LEDs with an on-chip color converter coating based on red InP/ZnSe QDs and traditional green/yellow powder phosphors.Using InP/ZnSe QDs with a quantum yield of nearly 80% and a full width at half-maximum of 45 nm,we demonstrate high spectral efficiency for white LEDs with very high CRI values. One of the best experimental results in terms of both luminous efficacy and color rendering performance is a white LED with an efficacy of 132 lm/W,and color rendering indices of R_(a)≈90,R9 ≈50 for CCT ≈4000 K.These experimental results are critically compared with theoretical benchmark values for white LEDs with on-chip downconversion from both phosphors and red Cd-based QDs.The various loss mechanisms in the investigated white LEDs are quantified with an accurate simulation model, and the main impediments to an even higher efficacy are identified as the blue LED wall-plug Quantum dots(QDs) offer an interesting alternative for traditional phosphors in on-chip light-emitting diode(LED) configurations.Earlier studies showed that the spectral efficiency of white LEDs with high color rendering index(CRI) values could be considerably improved by replacing red-emitting nitride phosphors with narrowband QDs.However, the red QDs in these studies were cadmium-based,which is a restricted element in the EU and certain other countries. The use of In P-based QDs,the most promising Cd-free alternative,is often presented as an inferior solution because of the broader linewidth of these QDs.However, while narrow emission lines are the key to display applications that require a large color gamut, the spectral efficiency penalty of this broader emission is limited for lighting applications. Here,we report efficient,high-CRI white LEDs with an on-chip color converter coating based on red In P/Zn Se QDs and traditional green/yellow powder phosphors.Using In P/Zn Se QDs with a quantum yield of nearly 80% and a full width at half-maximum of 45 nm,we demonstrate high spectral efficiency for white LEDs with very high CRI values. One of the best experimental results in terms of both luminous efficacy and color rendering performance is a white LED with an efficacy of 132 lm/W,and color rendering indices of Ra≈ 90,R9 ≈ 50 for CCT ≈ 4000 K.These experimental results are critically compared with theoretical benchmark values for white LEDs with on-chip downconversion from both phosphors and red Cd-based QDs.The various loss mechanisms in the investigated white LEDs are quantified with an accurate simulation model, and the main impediments to an even higher efficacy are identified as the blue LED wall-plug efficiency and light recycling in the LED package.BEGA KARADZA HANNES VAN AVERMAET LEILA MINGABUDINOVA ZEGER HENS YOURI MEURET 2022Photonics Research2022,10,1:2

15How do greenhouse gas emissions vary with biofertilizer type and soil temperature and moisture in a tropical grassland?显示文摘Greenhouse gases are known to play an important role in global warming. In this study,we determined the effects of selected soil and climate variables on nitrous oxide(N2O),methane(CH4),and carbon dioxide(CO2)emissions from a tropical grassland fertilized with chicken slurry, swine slurry, cattle slurry, and cattle compost.Cumulative N2O emissions did not differ between treatments and varied from 29.26 to 32.85 mg N m^-2.Similarly,cumulative CH4 emissions were not significantly different among the treatments and ranged from 6.34 to 57.73 mg CH4 m^-2.Slurry and compost application induced CO2 emissions that were significantly different from those in the control treatment. The CH4 conversion factors measured were 0.21%,1.39%,4.39%,and 5.07%for cattle compost, chicken slurry, swine slurry, and cattle slurry, respectively, differing from the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC).The fraction of added Nemitted as N2O was 0.39%,which was lower than the IPCC default value of 2%.Our findings suggest that N2O emissions could be mitigated by replacing synthetic fertilizer sources with either biofertilizer or compost. Our results indicate the following:N2O emission was mainly controlled by soil temperature, followed by soil moisture and then soil NH^'content;CH4 fluxes were mainly controlled by soil moisture and chamber headspace temperature;and CO2 fluxes were mainly controlled by chamber headspace temperature and soil moisture.Abmael da Silva CARDOSO Juliana Bega JUNQUEIRA Ricardo Andrade REIS Ana Claudia RUGGIERIAnimal Science 2020Pedosphere2020,30,5:1

18Wormlions prefer both fine and deep sand but only deep sand leads to better performance显示文摘Wormlions are small fly larvae that dig pits in loose soil to trap their prey. Similar to other trapbuilding predators, like spiders and antlions, they depend on the habitat structure for successful trap construction and prey catch. We examined whether sites at which wormlions are present differ in sand depth and particle size from nearby sites, at which wormlions are absent. Next, in the laboratory we manipulated both sand depth and type (fine vs. coarse) to determine their joint effect on microhabitat pref ere nee, the size of the con structed pit, wormlion movement, and their latency to respond to prey. We expected better performance by wormlions in fine and deep sand, and the sand in wormlions' natural sites to be finer and deeper. However, in only partial agreement with our expectations, wormlion sites featured finer sand but not deeper sand. In the laboratory, wormlions preferred both fine and deep sand, and moved more in shallow and coarse sand, which we interpret as an attempt to relocate away from unfavorable conditions. However, only deep sand led to larger pits being constructed and to a faster response to prey. The preference for fine sand could, therefore, be related to other ben efits that sand provides. Fin ally, body mass was a domi nant factor, interacting with the preference for both deep and fine sand: deep over shallow sand was more favored by large wormlions and fine over coarse sand by smaller ones. Our results suggest that several factors should be incorporated when studying microhabitat selection.Michael A Bar-Ziv Darar Bega Aziz Subach Inon Scharf 2019Current Zoology2019,65,4:0
19The value of spatial experience and group size for ant colonies in direct competition显示文摘Animals often search for food more efficiently with experience. However, the contribution of experience toforaging success under direct competition has rarelybeen examined. Here we used colonies of an individually foraging desert ant to investigate the value of spatial experience.First,we trained worker groups of equal numbers to solve either a complex or a simple maze.We then tested pairs of both groups against one another in reaching a food reward. This task required solving the same complex maze that one of the groups had been trained in,to determine which group would exploit better the food reward. The worker groups previously trained in the complex mazes reached the food reward faster and more of these workers fed on the food than those trained in simple mazes, but only in the intermediate size group. To determine the relative importance of group size versus spatial experience in exploiting food patches,we then tested smaller trained worker groups against larger untrained ones. The larger groups outcompeted the smaller ones, despite the latter's advantage of spatial experience. The contribution of spatial experience,as found here, appears to be small, and depends on group size:an advantage of a few workers of the untrained group over the trained group negates its benefits.Aziz Subach Bar Avidov Arik Dorfman Darar Bega Tomer Gilad Mark Kvetny May Hershkovitz Reshef Susanne Foitzik Inon Scharf 2023Insect Science2023,30,1:0
