| 1 | Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Streptococcus pneumoniae over 6 years at Gondar University Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia显示文摘Objective:To assess the magnitude and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns ofStreptococcus pneumoniaeisolates from various clinical specimens.Methods:A record based on retrospectivestudy was conducted at Gondar University Teaching Hospital from September 2007 to January 2012.All patients who visited Gondar University Hospital and provided clinical specimens(body fluids,discharge,swab and blood)for routine bacteriological culturing and antimicrobial susceptibilitytesting were taken for analysis.Clinical specimens were processed for bacterial culture accordingto the standard procedures.Antimicrobial susceptibility test for isolated organisms was doneusing agar disk diffusion method.The data were entered and analyzed using SPSS software version16 package.Results:One hundred and fifty threeStreptococcus pneumoniaewere isolated frompatients who visited Gondar University Teaching Hospital bacteriology laboratory for culture.Majority of the pneumococcal isolates were from inpatients[111(72.5%)],and 74(48.4%)were frombody fluids.Out of the total isolates,93(61%)were found to be resistant to at least one antibioticused for susceptibility testing.Forty eight(43.2%)of the isolates were multi-drug resistant(resistantto two or more drugs).The resistance rate noted for both ciprofloxacin 17(11.1%)and ceftriaxone15(9.8%)were alarming.Conclusions:High proportions of the isolates tend to be increasinglyresistant to the commonly prescribed drugs.The recommended drug of choice like ciprofloxacinand ceftriaxone were found to be less susceptible in the study area.Based on the findings,wetherefore recommend that antimicrobial agents should be inspected for acceptable activity beforethey are prescribed and administered empirically.Further study with a better design and surveyof antimicrobial susceptibility at large scale shoule be performed to draw advanced information. | Belay Anagaw Mucheye Gezachew Fantahun Biadgelgene Berhanu Anagaw Tariku Geleshe Birke Taddese Birhanu Getie Mengistu Endris Andargachew Mulu Chandrashekhar Unakal | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2013,3,7: | 3 |
| 2 | Allometric equations for aboveground biomass estimation of Olea europaea L.subsp.cuspidata in Mana Angetu Forest显示文摘Introduction:African wild olive,Olea europaea L.subsp.cuspidata(Wall.ex G.Don)Cif.,L‘Olivicoltore is widely distributed in dry forest and forest margins,often with Juniperus procera,in east Africa and Ethiopia.It reaches southern Africa,also India and China,ranging from tall trees to stunted shrubs.Does best in good forest soil,but hardy and drought resistant once established,even in poor soils.It is used for firewood,charcoal,poles,posts,timber(furniture,carving,floors,and paneling),medicine(stem,bark,and leaves),bee forage,milk flavoring(smoking wood),toothbrushes(twigs),and walking sticks.Although the species has many economic and ecological functions,its environmental uses like carbon storage and climate change mitigation are less assessed.Therefore,the objective of the study was to develop species-specific allometric equations for O.europaea L.subsp.cuspidata using semi-destructive method and evaluate allometric models for estimating the aboveground biomass(AGB).Results and Discussions:After all the necessary biomass calculations were done,seven AGB equations were developed.These regression equations relate AGB with diameter at breast height(DBH),height(H),and density(ρ)individually and in combination.Out of seven,four allometric equations were chosen based on goodness-of-fit statistics and three were rejected.The selected models were tested for accuracy based on observed data.The best models selected have higher R2-adj and lower residual standard error and Akaike information criterion than rejected equations.The relations for all selectedmodels are significant(p<0.000),which showed strong correlation of AGB with selected dendrometric variables.Accordingly,the AGB was strongly correlated with DBH and was not significantly correlated with wood density and height individually in O.europaea L.subsp.cuspidata allometric equation development.In combination,AGB was strongly correlated with DBH and height;DBH and wood density;and the combination of DBH,height,and wood density.Species-specific equations are used for better carbon assessment than general equations. | Birhanu Kebede Teshome Soromessa | 2018 | Ecosystem Health and Sustainability2018,4,1: | 2 |

| 4 | Effect of Polyacrylamide integrated with other soil amendments on runoff and soil loss:Case study from northwest Ethiopia显示文摘Anionic polyacrylamide(PAM)has the potential to reduce soil erosion through soil conditioning.However,a comprehensive study about its effectiveness especially when applied combined with other amendments have rarely been conducted in the tropical highland climatic conditions,such as in Ethiopia.The study assessed the effectiveness of PAM(P=40 kg ha^(-1))alone or integrated with other soil amendments such as gypsum(G=5 t ha^(-1)),lime(L=4 t ha^(-1))and biochar(B=8 t ha^(-1))on runoff and soil loss at Aba Gerima watershed in the Upper Blue Nile basin,northwest of Ethiopia,where there is high erosion-caused soil degradation.A total of 79 daily runoff and sediment data were collected from eight runoff plots(1.3m×4m)with three replications planted with teff(Eragrostis tef)crop for two years(2018&2019)rainy seasons.Associated changes in soil physicochemical properties and crop growth parameters were investigated.Treatments reduced seasonal runoff by 12–39%and soil loss by 13–53%.The highest reduction in runoff was observed from P+B and PAM treatments while the highest reduction in soil loss was observed from that of P+L and PAM treatments.Integrating PAM with other amendments improved soil structural stability,moisture content,soil pH(P+L)and organic matter(P+B),leading to favorable environment for crop growth(biomass yield)and reduced runoff and soil erosion.Unlike PAM,biochar and lime amendments may need more time after application to be more effective.Hence continuing the field experiment and studying physico-chemical mechanisms for extended period will better elucidate their single or combined effectiveness over time. | Birhanu Kebede Atsushi Tsunekawa Nigussie Haregeweyn Mitsuru Tsubo Temesgen Mulualem Amrakh I.Mamedov Derege Tsegaye Meshesha Enyew Adgo Ayele Almaw Fenta Kindiye Ebabu Tsugiyuki Masunaga | 2022 | International Soil and Water Conservation Research2022,10,3: | 1 |

| 16 | Public Perception on the Role of Urban Green Infrastructure Development and Land Use Management in Rapidly Urbanized Countries:The Case of Hawassa City,Ethiopia显示文摘Urban green areas are essential elements of cities and contribute to the quality of life in numerous ways by maintaining and regulating the environment.However,increased urbanization and development have placed urban green areas under extreme pressure,while unplanned urban growth has resulted in the loss of urban landscape and ecosystem.This study’s objective was the public perception on the role of urban green infrastructure and land use management.The 385 sample households were selected by using random sampling method.Descriptive and econometric analyses were used for analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data by using SPSS version 25.Among the major factors influencing the urban green infrastructure by respondents perception were education,income,family size,sex of respondent,marital status,type of employment,ownership of house,participation on public involvement,and frequency of visit to nearer planning which are significant variables in the model.Individuals visited the given green structure at least twice a week,and those not done it were 47.9% and 52.1%.The amount of individuals who visited it twice a week in positive perceivers was 64%,and the amount of those who have not done it was 36%.The Chi-square value of 10.9 was very big and telling us that the frequency of visit was determinant factor of perception.It is vital to keep in mind that while the built-up area and the agricultural areas are rising due to urbanization,the core-ecosystem land is being“eaten”as a result of the past and present land uses inside the administrative limits,as well as the services they provide.In the last 6 years,the rate at which the most precious ecosystems are disappearing has tripled.The population,which reflects the demand for these services and benefits,is still growing,putting more strain on the environment.The recommendations include:Public involvement in urban green space planning and development was determinant and core variable of the study.The government of the town administration should prepare the meeting.The result showed a high correlation between urban green planning and land use changes. | Mefekir Woldegebriel Tessema Birhanu Girma Abebe | 2024 | Fudan Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences2024,17,1: | 0 |
| 17 | Knowledge and preventive practices of livestock farmers on infectious causes of reproductive disorders in dairy cows in the Kembata Tambaro zone,southern Ethiopia显示文摘Several studies in Ethiopia have shown a high prevalence of reproductive disorders(RDs)in dairy cows.However,there is a lack of information about the levels of knowledge among farming community about the causes associated with RDs.A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study design was administered to 278 livestock farmers(LFs)in the Kembata Tambaro zone to evaluate knowledge and preventive practices on infectious causes of RDs in dairy cows.The results show that almost all farmers had heard about RDs,but more than half did not realize that reproductive system infections(RSIs)could cause RDs in dairy cows.A significant number of participants were not aware of the spread of RSIs between animals through sharing of breeding bulls,ingestion of urine contaminated feed,unhygienic management,sharing of equipment between milking cows,and interactions with contagious animals.The majority of LFs reported that they frequently consulted with traditional healers regarding the treatment of RDs,but very few looked for veterinary assistance.The results of multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that level of education and living areas were factors significantly and positively associated with knowledge about RSIs.Likewise,occupation,level of education and being knowledgeable about RSIs were significantly associated with good preventive practices.Veterinarians and responsible authorities should take these results into consideration to educate farmers on preventing losses attributed to RSIs. | Birhanu Ayele Samson Leta | 2021 | Animal Diseases2021,1,2: | 0 |

| 20 | Growth,yield,yield components,and grain qualities of groundnut(Arachis hypogaea L.)as affected by liming and phosphorus rates in southwest Ethiopia显示文摘Two field experiments were conducted in the main seasons of 2021/22 at the farmers'farm in two districts of southwest Ethiopia to investigate the effects of lime and phosphorus on groundnut yield and yield components,employing four levels of lime(0,2,4,and 6 t CaCO_(3)ha^(-1))and phosphorus(0,46,69,and 92 kg P_(2)O_(5)ha^(-1))arranged in factorial RCBD design with three replications.Data on the yield and its components were collected and subjected to an ANOVA using SAS software.The result demonstrated that plant height,number of branches,canopy spread,and shelling percentage were affected significantly by liming while effective nodule number,total peg,matured pod,and pod yield of groundnut significantly influenced by the main factors and their interactions.The combined application of 4 t lime and 46 kg P_(2)O_(5)ha^(-1)resulted in the highest number of effective nodules(147.23 plant^(-1)),total pod(72.6 plant^(-1)),mature pod(62.4 plant^(-1)),pod yield(4.49 t ha^(-1)),oil content(50.6%)and protein content(33.1%)whereas the lowest values of these parameters were seen in plots where neither lime nor phosphorus was applied.Therefore,it is advised that groundnut growers in the study areas,and similar agroecologies,apply the combination of 4 t lime and 46 kg P_(2)O_(5)ha^(-1). | Getachew Bekele Tinsae Birhanu Faska Terefe | 2023 | Oil Crop Science2023,8,3: | 0 |
