Healthcare waste management in selected government and private hospitals in Southeast Nigeria显示文摘Objective:To assess healthcare workers' involvement in healthcare waste management in public and private hospitals. Methods:Validated questionnaires(n = 660) were administered to randomly selected healthcare workers from selected private hospitals between April and July 2013.Results:Among the healthcare workers that participated in the study,187(28.33%) were medical doctors,44(6.67%) were pharmacists,77(11.67%) were medical laboratory scientist,35(5.30%) were waste handlers and 317(48.03%) were nurses.Generally, the number of workers that have heard about healthcare waste disposal system was above average 424(69.5%).More health-workers in the government(81.5%) than in private(57.3%) hospitals were aware of healthcare waste disposal system and more in government hospitals attended training on it.The level of waste generated by the two hospitals differed significantly(P=0.0086) with the generation level higher in government than private hospitals. The materials for healthcare waste disposal were significantly more available(P=0.001) in government than private hospitals. There was no significant difference(P = 0.285) in syringes and needles disposal practices in the two hospitals and they were exposed to equal risks(P =0.8510).Fifty-six(18.5%) and 140(45.5%) of the study participants in private and government hospitals respectively were aware of the existence of healthcare waste management committee with 134(44.4%) and 19(6.2%) workers confirming that it did not exist in their institutions. The existence of the committee was very low in the private hospitals. Conclusions:The availability of material for waste segregation at point of generation, compliance of healthcare workers to healthcare waste management guidelines and the existence of infection control committee in both hospitals is generally low and unsatisfactory. | Angus Nnamdi Oli Callistus Chibuike Ekejindu David Ufuoma Adje Ifeanyi Ezeobi Obiora Shedrack Ejiofor Christian Chibuzo Ibeh Chika Flourence Ubajaka | 2016 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2016,6,1: | 1
Effects of indole-3-butyric acid and age of stem cuttings on root morphology, growth, and survival of Cornus sericea显示文摘Red osier dogwood(Cornus sericea L.),widely distributed throughout North America,is essential for wildlife, thus biodiversity. It is recommended for reclamation or revegetation of sites disturbed by oil and gas extraction because it tolerates a wide range of soil types and high pH levels.Since germination of this species is extremely difficult with long stratification requirements and poor germination, cuttings facilitate propagation. In this study,to develop techniques to propagate the species from stem cuttings, four concentrations of indole-3-butyric acid(IBA)and two cutting ages previous year’s growth(PYG)and current year’s growth(CYG)were investigated for survival and growth. After 4 months, survival rate, height growth, and shoot biomass from PYG cuttings were enhanced with IB A.In contrast,IB A did not affect these parameters in CYG cuttings.Root morphology was significantly affected by IB A concentration and cutting age.IBA,at higher concentrations, increased root surface and length.Total root surface area and length of PYG cuttings were increased, which may facilitate the absorption of essential resources and consequently increase growth. The results indicate that increasing the concentration of IB A may be an effective way to have better plant survival and growth of previous year’s cuttings in red osier dogwood. | Sahari Inoue Chibuzo Ilogu Jean-Marie Sobze | 2023 | Journal of Forestry Research2023,34,2: | 0

An adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system white-box model for real-time multiphase flowing bottom-hole pressure prediction in wellbores显示文摘The majority of published empirical correlations and mechanistic models are unable to provide accurate flowing bottom-hole pressure(FBHP)predictions when real-time field well data are used. This is because the empirical correlations and the empirical closure correlations for the mechanistic models were developed with experimental datasets. In addition, most machine learning(ML)FBHP prediction models were constructed with real-time well data points and published without any visible mathematical equation. This makes it difficult for other readers to use these ML models since the datasets used in their development are not open-source.This study presents a white-box adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system(ANFIS)model for real-time prediction of multiphase FBHP in wellbores.1001 real well data points and 1001 normalized well data points were used in constructing twenty-eight different Takagi eSugeno fuzzy inference systems(FIS)structures. The dataset was divided into two sets;80%for training and 20%for testing.Statistical performance analysis showed that a FIS with a 0.3 range of influence and trained with a normalized dataset achieved the best FBHP prediction performance. The optimal ANFIS black-box model was then translated into the ANFIS white-box model with the Gaussian input and the linear output membership functions and the extracted tuned premise and consequence parameter sets.Trend analysis revealed that the novel ANFIS model correctly simulates the anticipated effect of input parameters on FBHP.In addition, graphical and statistical error analyses revealed that the novel ANFIS model performed better than published mechanistic models, empirical correlations, and machine learning models.New training datasets covering wider input parameter ranges should be added to the original training dataset to improve the model's range of applicability and accuracy. | Chibuzo Cosmas Nwanwe Ugochukwu Ilozurike Duru | 2023 | Petroleum2023,9,4: | 0
Electro-and photochemical studies of gold (Ⅲ) bromide towards a novel laser-based method of gold patterning显示文摘In this report, we demonstrate a novel technique for the microscopic patterning of gold by combining the photoreduction of Au^(Ⅲ)Br_(2)^(-)to Au^(Ⅰ)Br_(2)^(-)and the electrochemical reduction of Au^(Ⅰ)Br_(2)^(-)to elemental gold in a single step within solution. While mask-based methods have been the norm for electroplating, the adoption of direct laser writing for flexible, real-time patterning has not been widespread. Through irradiation using a 405 nm laser and applying a voltage corresponding to a selective potential window specific to Au^(Ⅰ)Br_(2)^(-), we have shown that we can locally deposit elemental gold at the focal point of the laser. In addition to demonstrating the feasibility of the technique, we have collected data on the kinetics of the photoreduction reaction in ethanol and have deduced its rate law. We have confirmed the selective deposition of Au^(Ⅰ)Br_(2)^(-) within a potential window through controlled potential electrolysis experiments and through direct measurement on a quartz crystal microbalance. Finally, we have verified local deposition through scanning electron microscopy. | Cecily Rosenbaum Matthew Murphy Paul T Lawrence Curtis Sirkoch Stella Rose Schneeberg Kyle Zigner Sarah Morris Ethan Richman Chibuzo Anyanwu Eric Will Clare Wheeler Eric Reed Christopher N LaFratta | 2022 | International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing2022,4,3: | 0
β-Islet cell regeneration potential of Mirabilis jalapa in hyperglycemic rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate the role of Mirabilis jalapa root extracts in restoration of glucose homeostasis in alloxan-induced hyperglycemic Wistar albino rats. Methods:Experimental hyperglycemic rats were treated daily with 200 and 400 mg/kg of Mirabilis jalapa extracts after initial fasting for 6 h.Two-hour postprandial glucose and changes in body weight were monitored during treatment. After 14 d,the rats were sacrificed and blood was collected for biochemical assessment of serum glucose and insulin levels, lipid profile, and oxidative stress markers.Histopathological examinations of harvested pancreas were also carried out. Results:Mirabilis jalapa root extracts at 200 and 400 mg/kg increased the body weight of hyperglycemic rats.Postprandial glucose levels of the extract-treated hyperglycemic groups progressively declined during treatment compared with the untreated hyperglycemic control group(P<0.05).The lipid profile indices of the untreated negative control group were significantly elevated(P<0.05),which were reversed by treatment with Mirabilis jalapa extracts. The remarkable increases in antioxidant enzyme activities and a significant decrease in malondialdehyde levels were observed in the hyperglycemic group treated with Mirabilis jalapa extracts.Mirabilis jalapa extracts also significantly increased serum insulin levels(P<0.05).In addition, histopathological examinations of the pancreas revealed a significant cell population within the islet nests of the extract-treated hyperglycemic groups. Conclusions:Mirabilis jalapa extract can restore glucose homeostasis and show hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects in hyperglycemic rats.Further studies are needed to verify the active components of the plant and the underlying mechanism of action in the future. | Masud Eneji Sadiq Chibuzo Egwuenu Rabiu Saidu Umar Wasagu Usman Zayyanu Umar Bello Usman | 2022 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2022,12,8: | 0

An artificial neural network visible mathematical model for real-time prediction of multiphase flowing bottom-hole pressure in wellbores显示文摘Accurate prediction of multiphase flowing bottom-hole pressure(FBHP)in wellbores is an important factor required for optimal tubing design and production optimization.Existing empirical correlations and mechanistic models provide inaccurate FBHP predictions when applied to real-time field datasets because they were developed with laboratory-dependent parameters. Most machine learning(ML)models for FBHP prediction are developed with real-time field data but presented as black-box models. In addition, these ML models cannot be reproduced by other users because the dataset used for training the machine learning algorithm is not open source. These make using the ML models on new datasets difficult. This study presents an artificial neural network(ANN)visible mathematical model for real-time multiphase FBHP prediction in wellbores.A total of 1001 normalized real-time field data points were first used in developing an ANN black-box model. The data points were randomly divided into three different sets;70%for training,15%for validation, and the remaining 15%for testing.Statistical analysis showed that using the Levenberg-Marquardt training optimization algorithm(trainlm),hyperbolic tangent activation function(tansig),and three hidden layers with 20,15 and 15 neurons in the first, second and third hidden layers respectively achieved the best performance. The trained ANN model was then translated into an ANN visible mathematical model by extracting the tuned weights and biases.Trend analysis shows that the new model produced the expected effects of physical attributes on FBHP.Furthermore, statistical and graphical error analysis results show that the new model outperformed existing empirical correlations, mechanistic models, and an ANN white-box model.Training of the ANN on a larger dataset containing new data points covering a wider range of each input parameter can broaden the applicability domain of the proposed ANN visible mathematical model. | Chibuzo Cosmas Nwanwe Ugochukwu Ilozurike Duru Charley Anyadiegwu Azunna I.B.Ekejuba | 2023 | Petroleum Research2023,8,3: | 0
