| 2 | Positive moderation of the hematology, plasma biochemistry and ocular indices of oxidative stress in alloxan-induced diabetic rats,by an aqueous extract of the leaves of Sansevieria liberica Gerome and Labroy显示文摘Objective:To investigate the ability of an aqueous extract of the leaves of Sansevieria liberica (S.liberica) to alter the hematology, plasma biochemistry and ocular indices of oxidative stress in alloxan-induced diabetic rats.Method:Diabetes meUitus was induced by injection of alloxan (80 mg/kg body weight),via the tail vein. The extract was administered orally at 100,200 and 300 mg/kg body weight(both to normal and diabetic rats),and metformin at SO mg/kg body weight. Results:Compared to test control, the treatment dose dependently, significantly lowered(P<0.05) ocular malondialdehyde content, atherogenic indices, red cell, total white cell and lymphocyte counts, mean cell hemoglobin concentration;and plasma levels of glucose,triglyceride,total-, very low density lipoprotein-,low density lipoprotein- and non-high density lipoprotein cholesterols, total, conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin, sodium, urea, blood urea nitrogen,as well as plasma activities of alkaline phosphatase, alanine and aspartate transaminases. However, the treatment significantly increased(P<0.05) hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration, mean cell hemoglobin, and mean cell volume, neutrophil and monocyte counts, and plasma levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol, potassium, chloride, calcium, bicarbonate and total protein, ocular ascorbic acid content and ocular activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase. This study showed the hypoglycemic,hypolipidemic,immune-modulating,ocular-,hepato-renal and cardio-protective potentials of the extract. Conclusions:All these, support the use of the leaves of S.liberica in African traditional health care practices for the management of diabetes mellitus. | Ikewuchi Jude Chigozie Ikewuchi Catherine Chidinma | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2013,6,1: | 1 |

| 7 | Occurrence of False-Positive Tests and Cross-reactions Between COVID-19 and Dengue With Implications During Diagnosis:A Mixed Evidence Synthesis显示文摘This review aimed to assess the occurrence of false-positive serological reaction between dengue and coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)and its implications for diagnosis.Evidence syntheses were conducted by systematically reviewing available literature using multiple databases, including Web of Science,PubMed,Google Scholar and medRxiv.Among a total of 16 presented cases from clinical settings,cross-reaction to COVID-19 serological tests was observed in two(12.5%)dengue-positive patients, while 14 patients(87.5%)confirmed positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)showed a cross-reaction with dengue serological tests, leading to misdiagnosis and mismanagement by attending clinicians.Of 1789 SARS-CoV-2-positive sera,cross-reaction to dengue serological tests was observed in 180 sera(10%),which is higher than the cross-reaction observed for SARS-CoV-2 in archived pre-COVID-19 sera positive for a dengue infection(75 of 811,9.2%,P=0.674).Clinicians in tropical regions are therefore advised to interpret serological tests with caution and use a more pragmatic approach to triage these infections. | Daniel C.Digwo Chidinma P.Elebe Vincent N.Chigor Stella N.Madueke Christian K.Ezeh Anthony C.Ike | 2023 | Infectious Microbes & Diseases2023,5,2: | 0 |
| 8 | Acceptability and strategies for enhancing uptake of human immunodeficiency virus self-testing in Nigeria显示文摘BACKGROUND In 2019,the Nigerian Ministry of Health published the first operational guidelines for human immunodeficiency virus self-testing(HIVST)to improve access to human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)testing services among undertested populations in the country. Also,as part of the campaign to increase HIV testing services in Nigeria, the Nigerian Ministry of Health developed standard operating procedures for using HIVST kits.AIM To systematically review the acceptability and strategies for enhancing the uptake of HIVST in Nigeria.METHODS The systematic review was conducted and reported in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses.Different databases were searched to get the necessary materials needed for this review.Standardized forms developed by the authors were used for data extraction to minimize the risk of bias and ensure that the articles used for the study were properly screened.Identified articles were first screened using the titles and their abstracts. The full papers were screened, and the similarities of the documents were determined.Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method studies were evaluated using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme and Critical Appraisal Framework criteria.RESULTS All the publications reviewed were published between 2015 and 2022,with 33.3%published in 2021.Most(77.8%)of the studies were cross-sectional,43.3%were conducted in Lagos State, and 26.3%were conducted among young people. The study revealed a high level of acceptability of HIVST.Certain factors, such as gender, sexual activity, and previous testing experience, influence the acceptability of HIV self-testing,with some individuals more likely to opt-out.The cost of the kit was reported as the strongest factor for choosing HIVST services, and this ranged from 200 to 4000 Naira(approximately United States Dollar 0.55-11.07),with the majority willing to pay 500 Naira(approximately United States Dollar 1.38).Privately-owned,registered pharmacies, youthfriendly centres, supermarkets, and online stores were the most cited access locations for HIVST.The least influential attribute was the type of specimen needed for HIVST.Strategies addressing cost and preferred access points and diverse needs for social media promotion, local translation of product use instructions, and HIVST distribution led by key opinion leaders for key populations were found to significantly enhance HIVST uptake and linkage to care.CONCLUSION HIVST acceptability is generally high from an intention-to-use perspective.Targeted strategies are required to improve the acceptability of HIV self-testing,especially among males, sexually active individuals, and first-time testers.Identified and proposed uptake-enhancing strategies need to be investigated in controlled settings and among different populations and distribution models in Nigeria. | Victor Abiola Adepoju Chidinma Umebido Ademola Adelekan Ali Johnson Onoja | 2023 | World Journal of Methodology2023,13,3: | 0 |
