Modeling and optimization of Terminalia catappa L.kernel oil extraction using response surface methodology and artificial neural network显示文摘In this study, response surface methodology(RSM)and artificial neural network(ANN)were used to optimize Terminalia catappa L.kernel oil(TCKO)yield.Solvent extraction method was used for the oil extraction, with n-hexane as the extracting solvent. The highest oil yield was obtained at 55℃,150 min,and 0.5 mm.The physicochemical properties of the TCKO were determined using standard methods.Gas chromatographic(GC)analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR)were respectively, used to determine the fatty acid composition and prevalent functional groups in TCKO.At optimum conditions of temperature, particle size and extraction time, the RSM predicted oil yield was 62.92%,which was validated as 60.34%,whereas ANN predicted yield was 60.39%,which was validated as 60.40%.The results of the physicochemical characterization of TCKO showed that the dielectric strength(DS),viscosity, flash and pour points values were 30.61 KV,20.29 mm^2 s^−1,260°C,and 3℃,respectively.Physicochemical characterization and FTIR results of TCKOindicated its potential industrial application, especially as transformer fluid.Fatty acids compositions result indicated that the oil was highly unsaturated;while XRD results of Terminalia catappa L.kernel(TCK)samples obtained, both before and after extraction, showed difference in their peaks and corresponding intensities, due to the damage effect of solvent. Finally, the obtained optimization results indicated that ANN was a better and more effective tool than RSM,due to its higher R^2 and lower RMS values. | Chinedu Matthew Agu Matthew Chukwudi Menkiti Ekwe Bassey Ekwe Albert Chibuzor Agulanna | 2020 | Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture2020,,1: | 3
Geochemical characterization of Granitoids in Katchuan Irruan area: further evidence for peraluminous and shoshonitic compositions and post-collisional setting of granitic rocks in the Precambrian Basement Complex of Nigeria显示文摘Petrographic studies on Granitoids from Katchuan Irruan and adjoining areas, southeastern Nigeria, has shown that they are garnetiferous biotite granite, aplitic granite, porphyritic hornblende biotite granite, porphyritic muscovite biotite granite, weakly foliated leucogranodiorite and simple pegmatite. They are closely associated with the Precambrian Basement Complex rocks which they intruded.Modal analysis shows that the rocks consist of quartz(10%-25%),oligoclase(10%-30%),K-feldspar(15%-35%),biotite(3%-25%),with occasional garnet, hornblende, muscovite, and accessory chlorite, haematite and magnetite.Geochemical data indicates that the rocks are generally shoshonitic,alkali-calcic to calcic, ferroan and peraluminous. They are enriched in large ion lithophile elements as well as high field strength elements(Hf,Ta,Yb,Sm,Zr and Y).Their trace elements and REE patterns are similar, indicating that they are co-genetic.They are characterized by high fractionation factor(La/Yb)N(3.04-228.44)and pronounced negative Eu anomalies(Eu/Eu*)(0.23-0.71).Their overall geochemical features indicate that they were most likely derived from partial melting of crustal materials in an orogenic(post-collisional)tectonic setting. They are therefore related to the Pan-African granites, otherwise known as the Older Granites which were emplaced during the Pan African orogenic event. | Chinedu U.Ibe Smart C.Obiora | 2019 | Acta Geochimica2019,38,5: | 2

Ultrastructural studies of seed coat and cotyledon during rapeseed maturation显示文摘Brassica napus L.(B.napus)is an important oil crop worldwide and it rapidly accumulates oil at late stage of seed maturation. However, little is known about the cellular mechanism of oil accumulation and seed color changes during the late stage of rapeseed development. Here,we analyzed the ultrastructure of seed coat, aleurone and cotyledon in embryos of B.napus from 25 to 70 days after flowering(DAF).The pigments, which were deposited on the cell wall of palisade cells in seed coat, determined dark black color of rapeseed. The chloroplasts degenerated into non-photosynthetic plastids which caused the green cotyledon to turn into yellow. The chloroplasts in aleurone and cotyledon cells respectively degenerated into remnants without inner and outer envelope membranes and ecoplasts with intact inner and outer envelope membranes. From 40 to 70 DAF,there were degraded chloroplasts without thylakoid, oil bodies contacting with plastids or protein bodies, big starch deposits of chloroplasts degrading into small particles then disappearing, and small endoplasmic reticulum(ER)in aleurone and cotyledon cells.Additionally, there were decreases of chlorophyll content and dramatic increases of oil content in rapeseed. These results suggested that the rapid oil accumulation was independent on the NADPH synthesized by photosynthesis of chloroplasts and probably utilized other sources of reductant, such as the oxidative pentose phosphate pathway during the late stage of rapeseed development. The triacylglycerol assembly presumably utilizes the enzymes in the plastid, cytosol or oil body of cotyledon and aleurone cells. | CAO Jian-bo HE Li-min Chinedu Charles NWAFOR QIN Li-hong ZHANG Chun-yu SONG Yan-tun HAO Rong | 2021 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2021,20,5: | 1
Chemoprotective activity of aqueous leaf extract of Acalypha wilkesiana against cyclophosphamide-induced toxicity in rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate the protective effect of aqueous leaf extract of Acalypha(A.)wilkesiana Muell.Arg(Euphorbiaceae)against cyclophosphamide-induced toxicity in albino rats. Methods:Twenty male albino rats were randomly divided into five groups of four animals each. The control group(Ⅰ)was fed with pellets and distilled water, while group Ⅱ was orally administered with only 20 mg/kg cyclophosphamide.Groups Ⅲ,Ⅳ and Ⅴ were coadministered with 20 mg/kg body weight cyclophosphamide and 110,220 and 440 mg/kg body weight A.wilkesiana leaf extract, respectively, for 7 d.After treatment, liver and kidney function biomarkers, haematological parameters, liver antioxidants, and mitochondrial membrane permeability transition pore opening were investigated.Results:A.wilkesiana leaf extract significantly reduced(P<0.05)cyclophosphamide-induced increase in plasma aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, creatinine, uric acid and urea.It increased superoxide dismutase,catalase,glutathione-S-transferase activities and reduced glutathione levels. It also increased packed cell volume count, hemoglobin concentration and white blood cell count while inhibiting the induction of mitochondrial swelling. Conclusions:This study demonstrates that aqueous extract of A.wilkesiana leaf protected tissues against cyclophosphamide-induced oxidative damage. | Chinedu P.Anokwuru God’swill N.Anyasor Olutayo S.Shokunbi Babajide Sopekan Oyindamola K.Osinuga Olusola E.Afolabi Olamide B.Arojojoye Chibundu N.Ezekiel Isaiah DI.Ramaite | 2019 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2019,12,9: | 0

Antimalarial activities of butanol and ethylacetate fractions of Combretum nigricans leaf显示文摘Objective: To evaluate the antimalarial activity of the ethylacetate and butanol fractions of Combretum nigricans(C. nigricans) leaf extract in mice. Methods: C. nigricans solvent(butanol and ethylacetate) fractions were screened for their phytochemical constituents using standard procedures illustrated by Harborne and Evans. The Peters' 4-day suppressive test against early malaria infection, Rane's curative test against established malaria and prophylactic test for residual activity were employed for evaluating the antimalarial potential in mice. Results: The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, terpenoids, saponins, and flavonoids in both fractions at different intensity. Both fractions exhibited significant antimalarial activity in all test models(P<0.05). The ethylacetate fraction of C. nigricans had better chemosuppressive and curative effects compared to the butanol fraction, which however, elicited a better chemoprophylactic effect. The chemosuppressive effect of C. nigricans ethylacetate fraction(200-800 mg/kg) was 77.6%, 69.1% and 86.1%; curative effect was 62.3%, 71.3% and 72.4%; while the chemoprophylactic activity was 32.1%, 48.6% and 61.2% respectively. C. nigricans butanol fraction(200-800 mg/kg) had 40.3%, 54.1% and 69.1% chemosuppression; 26.2%, 36.9% and 34.5% curative effect; and 48.4%, 70.0% and 87.4% chemoprophylaxis. Conclusions: Both solvent fractions of C. nigricans possess antimalarial activity, and may be useful at different stages of malaria therapy. | Enegide Chinedu Peter A.Akah Dabum L.Jacob Ifeoma A.Onah Chimere Y.Ukegbu Chukwuma K.Chukwuemeka | 2019 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2019,9,4: | 0
Experimental study on the degree and damage-control mechanisms of fuzzy-ball-induced damage in single and multi-layer commingled tight reservoirs显示文摘Fuzzy-ball working fluids(FBWFs)have been successfully applied in different development phases of tight reservoirs.Field reports revealed that FBWFs satisfactorily met all the operational and reservoir damage control requirements during their application. However, the damage-control mechanisms and degree of formation damage caused by fuzzy-ball fluids have not been investigated in lab-scale studies so far.In this study, the degree of fuzzy-ball-induced damage in single-and double-layer reservoirs was evaluated through core flooding experiments that were based on permeability and flow rate indexes.Additionally, its damage mechanisms were observed via scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive spectroscopy tests. The results show that:(1)For single-layer reservoirs, the FBWF induced weak damage on coals and medium-to-weak damage on sandstones, and the difference of the damage in permeability or flow rate index on coals and sandstones is below 1%.Moreover,the minimum permeability recovery rate was above 66%.(2)For double-layer commingled reservoirs, the flow rate index revealed weak damage and the overall damage in double-layer was lower than the single-layer reservoirs.(3)There is no significant alteration in the microscopic structure of fuzzy-ball saturated cores with no evidence of fines migration. The dissolution of lead and sulfur occurred in coal samples, while tellurium in sandstone, aluminum, and magnesium in carbonate. However, the precipitation of aluminum, magnesium, and sodium occurred in sandstone but no precipitates found in coal and carbonate. The temporal plugging and dispersion characteristics of the FBWFs enable the generation of reservoir protection layers that will minimize formation damage due to solid and fluid invasion. | Chinedu J.Okere James J.Sheng Li-Kun Fan Xiao-Wei Huang Li-Hui Zheng Pan-Feng Wei | 2023 | Petroleum Science2023,20,6: | 0
Impact of Financial Intermediation on Economic Growth of Nigeria(1995-2014)显示文摘The problems of lack of efficiency and effectiveness of mobilizing resources lead to unemployment, instability, and underdevelopment of the Nigeria economy.Financial intermediation as a financial system aims at the enhancement of mobilization of funds by pooling individuals savings and increasing the proportion of societal resources devoted to interest—yielding assets and long-term investments, which in turn facilitates economic growth. This study is aimed at accessing the impact of financial intermediation on economic development in Nigeria by using the endogenous components of financial intermediation, such as demand deposits(DD),time/savings deposits(T/Sav),and credits(loans and overdraft),our independent variables as explanatory variables to predict the outcome of our dependent variable output(GDP)secondary data from the CBN(Central Bank of Nigeria)Statistical Bulletin of various issues. The study covers an eight-year period(1995-2014).Parametric statistics in forms of analysis of variance(ANOVA),mean, standard deviation,t-test,co-efficient of correlation, and simple linear regression were used to analyze the data. The findings suggest that though there exists a positive growth relationship between financial intermediation and output in Nigeria, there also exist elements of negative short-run growth relationship, especially for the periods that suffered financial shocks resulting from the global financial crisis and perhaps numerous bank failures.Recommendation states that this finding may serve to buttress existing research outcomes and will be relevant to regulatory authorities in formulating policies that are capable of positively enhancing financial intermediation and output growth in the economy. | Okoro Okoro E.U. | 15 | Genome assembly of the Brassicaceae diploid Orychophragmus violaceus reveals complex whole-genome duplication and evolution of dihydroxy fatty acid metabolism显示文摘Orychophragmus violaceus is a Brassicaceae species widely cultivated in China, particularly as a winter cover crop in northern China because of its low-temperature tolerance and low water demand.Recently,O.violaceus has also been cultivated as a potential industrial oilseed crop because of its abundant 24-carbon dihydroxy fatty acids(diOH-FAs),which contribute to superior high-temperature lubricant properties. In this study,we performed de novo assembly of the O.violaceus genome.Whole-genome synteny analysis of the genomes of its relatives demonstrated that O.violaceus is a diploid that has undergone an extrawhole-genome duplication(WGD)after the Brassicaceae-specific a-WGD event, with a basic chromosome number of x=12.Formation of diOH-FAs is hypothesized to have occurred after the WGD event.Based on the genome and the transcriptome data from multiple stages of seed development,we predicted that OvDGAT1-1 and OvDGAT1-2 are candidate genes for the regulation of diOH-FA storage in O.violaceus seeds. These results may greatly facilitate the development of heat-tolerant and eco-friendly plant-based lubricants using O.violaceus seed oil and improve our understanding of the genomic evolution of Brassicaceae. | Fan Huang Peng Chen Xinyu Tang Ting Zhong Taihua Yang Chinedu Charles Nwafor Chao Yang Xianhong Ge Hong An Zaiyun Li Edgar B.Cahoon Chunyu Zhang | 2023 | Plant Communications2023,4,2: | 0

Thermally degraded palm kernel oil increased serum 4-hydroxynonenal protein adduct formation and hepatotoxic indications in Wistar rats:vitamin C intervention显示文摘Objective:The frequent consumption of deep-fried foods has been linked to high risk of certain non-communicable diseases. As a consequence, the safety of deep-fried oil(DFO)ingested with fried foods has been called into question. This study therefore evaluated the effects of DFO from palm kernel on serum 4-hydroxynonenal protein adduct formation,De Ritis ratio(DRR),liver histology and atherogenicity in Wistar rats and the role of vitamin C intervention.Methods:Deep-fried oil samples were characterized for total antioxidant capacity(TAC),degradation and metal contamination levels and compared against counterpart unused frying oil(UFO).In the animal experiment, both oil samples, sourced from commercial cooks, were orally administered, for 13 weeks,to sixty-two rats randomly divided into six test groups of two exposure levels alongside vitamin C control. After exposure, serum liver enzyme activities and lipoproteins levels were determined using colorimetric methods, while protein adducts levels were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA).Histopathological examinations of liver tissues were also performed. Results:DFO had significantly lower(P=0.021)TAC,significantly higher(P=0.024)volatile acid and Pb concentrations compared to UFO.Exposure to DFO significantly increased(P<0.01)serum protein adduct formation, the De Ritis ratio and caused cytoplasmic vacuolation and pigment deposit on liver tissues compared to the control.Additionally,DFO exposures had an initial negative body weight gain rate that increased at the end of the study.Conclusion:However,co-administration of vitamin C significantly reduced(P<0.05)the De Ritis ratio and reduced the serum protein adducts levels by at least 15%.Concomitant intake of vitamin C and DFO can mitigate probable adverse effects. | Emeka Chinedu Ifediba Onyenmechi Johnson Afonne | 2023 | Toxicology Advances2023,5,1: | 0
