| 9 | Late endocarditis of Amplatzer atrial septal occluder device in a child显示文摘Bacterial endocarditis following atrial septal defect closure using Amplatzer device in a child is extremely rare. We report a 10-year-old girl who developed late bacterial endocarditis, 6 years after placement of an Amplatzer atrial septal occluder device. Successful explantation of the device and repair of the resultant septal defect was carried out using a homograft patch. The rare occurrence of this entity prompted us to highlight the importance of a closed long-term follow up, review the management and explore preventive strategies for similar patients who have multiple co-morbidities and a cardiac device. | 16 | Unexpected ecotone dynamics of a sand dune vegetation complex following water table decline显示文摘Aims Central Hungarian inland dune ranges harbor heterogeneous grassland vegetation with an extensive network of ecotones,arranged perpendicular to topography-driven hydrologic gradients.The area suffers from severe aridification due to climate change and local anthropogenic factors,which have led to a dramatic decline of the water table.As a result,groundwater is no longer reachable for lowlying plant communities;thus,we expect they are bound to undergo profound changes.This study investigates how the plant communities respond to this changing environment over time by monitoring ecotones,since they are frequently the hotspots of ecosystem change.We monitored five ecotones along permanent belt transects for 15 years to characterize their dynamic response,and to identify the internal structural changes of the plant communities the ecotones delimit.Methods Ecotones were delineated with the split moving window technique.The dynamics of two ecotone parameters,location and contrast,were analyzed with linear regression models incorporating two independent variables:study year as a measure of time since the loss of groundwater,and precipitation as a possible driver of interannual variations.The internal changes of the patches separated by the ecotones were analyzed using plant functional groups.Important Findings Precipitation had no detectable effect on the ecotone descriptors,but study year influenced ecotones in an unusual fashion.The position of the ecotones appeared to be very stable in time;their dynamics are stationary,not directional as we predicted.The contrasts had clear tendencies;two ecotones disappeared,one new one was formed and two ecotones showed no trend.The internal changes of the patches over time were dramatic,showing a shift toward more xeric and more open plant assemblages in most stretches of the transects.Thus,the dynamic response of the vegetation was not patch expansion vs.shrinking,but fusion vs.division,which profoundly restructured the vegetation pattern.Analysis of plant functional groups revealed that the trends of the ecotone contrasts could be traced back to internal changes of the patches and not to processes within ecotones.Hence,in situations where stationary ecotone dynamics prevail,ecotone position may be a poor indicator of the effects of strong directional environmental changes.However,in this study we show that ecotone contrast can serve as a sensitive tool for monitoring landscape pattern transformations in these cases.Also,this highlights the long-term nature of ecotone responses,which can have implications in landscape planning and restoration measures. | Csaba Tölgyesi Márta Zalatnai LászlóErdős Zoltán Bátori Nicole Rosemary Hupp LászlóKörmöczi | 2016 | Journal of Plant Ecology2016,9,1: | 0 |
| 17 | Bone disorders in experimentally induced liver disease in growing rats显示文摘AIM: To investigate the change of bone parameters in a new model of experimentally induced liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in growing rats.METHODS: Fischer-344 rats (n = 55) were used. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), phenobarbital (PB), and a single diethylnitrosamine (DEN) injection were used. Animals were killed at wk 8 and 16. Bone mineral content, femoral length, cortical index (quotient of cortical thickness and whole diameter) and ultimate bending load (Fmax)of the femora were determined. The results in animals treated with DEN+PB+CCl4 (DPC, n = 21) were compared to those in untreated animals (UNT,n = 14) and in control group treated only with DEN+PB (DP, n = 20).RESULTS: Fatty liver and cirrhosis developed in each DPC-treated rat at wk 8 and HCC was presented at wk 16. No skeletal changes were found in this group at wk 8,but each parameter was lower (P<0.05 for each) at wk 16 in comparison to the control group. Neither fatty liver nor cirrhosis was observed in DP-treated animals at any time point. Femoral length and Fmax values were higher (P<0.05 for both) in DP-treated animals at wk 8 compared to the UNT controls. However, no difference was found at wk 16.CONCLUSION: Experimental liver cirrhosis and HCC are accompanied with inhibited skeletal growth, reduced bone mass, and decreased mechanical resistance in growing rats. Our results are in concordance with the data of other studies using different animal models. | 18 | Discrepancies between clinical and autopsy findings in patients who had an acute stroke显示文摘Objectives According to international observations,the incidence of clinical autopsies is declining worldwide,plummeting below 5%in the USA and many European countries.It is an unfavourable trend as,in 7%-12%of cases,recent clinicopathological studies found discrepancies that might have changed the therapy or the outcome if known premortem.As previous large-scale observations have examined varied patient populations,we aimed to focus on the differences between the clinical and pathological diagnostic findings in only patients who had a stroke.Material and methods We assessed the postmortem non-neuropathological and neuropathological findings of 534 consecutive patients who had a stroke who passed away.Systemic neoplasms,pneumonias,thromboembolisms and haemorrhagic transformations revealed only by autopsy were considered severe abnormalities;in addition,benign abnormalities important from an educational or scientific point of view were also recorded.Results In 26 of the 534 cases(4.9%),the presence of systemic neoplasms had already been confirmed in the clinical stage;however,8(1.5%)malignant tumours were only detected during autopsy.Also,80(15%)thromboembolic events,73(13.6%)pneumonias and 66(18%)haemorrhagic transformations were only diagnosed at autopsy.Longer hospital stay(from admission to death)resulted in fewer discrepancies between clinical and autopsy diagnosis of thromboembolic events and pneumonias(p<0.01).In 169 cases,benign findings were detected.Conclusions While the type of acute stroke is reliably diagnosed with imaging techniques,postmortem autopsies are also important in patients who had a stroke as autopsies may reveal clinically silent diseases(eg,tumour),and contribute to knowing the actual incidence of stroke-related thromboembolic and pneumonia complications. | Lilla Hudák Attila Csaba Nagy Sarolta Molnár Gábor Méhes Katalin Erzsébet Nagy LászlóOláh LászlóCsiba | 2022 | Stroke & Vascular Neurology2022,7,3: | 0 |
