| 1 | Further geological and palaeoanthropological investigations at the Maludong hominin site, Yunnan Province, Southwest China显示文摘Three-dimensional mapping and section work undertaken by us in 2008 have identified 11 stratigraphic units at Maludong site.AMS radiocarbon dating of charcoal established an accurate and internally consistent age profile for the sequence of 17.8±0.2 ka to 13.2±0.1 ka.Archaeomagnetic analysis showed changes in externally derived pedogenically enhanced material consistent with a warming in climate between the cold period of Henrich Event 1 and the B lling-Aller d interstadial.Human remains recovered during the 1989 excavation were derived from a deposit dating to this interstadial,or between 14.3±0.3 ka and 13.5±0.1 ka.Anthropogenic features,including burnt rocks,baked sediment and thick charcoal and ash layers,were identified and examined through archaeomagnetic analysis.Two monkey fossils are described here,one of them being reassigned from Macaca robustus to M.aff.M.assamensis.They confirm the young age of the site and also show signs of anthropogenic alteration in the form of burning.Additional human cranial remains are reported for the first time and new data are provided for some specimens described previously.A range of new features is identified that strengthen the affinities of the Maludong remains to archaic humans.The presence of this globally unique mosaic of archaic and modern features raises important questions about human evolutionary history in East Asia during the Late Upper Pleistocene. | JI XuePing CURNOE Darren BAO ZhenDe HERRIES Andy I R FINK David ZHU YunSheng HELLSTROM John LUO Yun TACON Paul S C | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013，58，35： | 3 |
| 2 | Development of an educational cartoon to prevent worm infections in Chinese schoolchildren显示文摘Background:With more than two billion people infected worldwide,soil-transmitted helminths(STH)are the most widespread infections.To date,STH control efforts rely predominantly on recurrent mass drug administration(MDA),which does not prevent reinfection.Additional public health measures including novel health educational tools are required for more sustained integrated control of STH.We describe the development of an educational cartoon video(The Magic Glasses)targeting STH infections in Chinese schoolchildren and its pilot testing in China.We applied an extensive community-based mixed methods approach involving input from the target group of 9–10 year old schoolchildren and key informants,such as teachers,doctors and parents,in order to identify potential STH infection risks in the study area and to formulate key messages for the cartoon.The development of the educational cartoon included three major steps:formative research,production,and pilot testing and revision.Results:We found that most adults and approximately 50%of the schoolchildren were aware of roundworm(Ascaris)infection,but knowledge of transmission,prevention and treatment of STH was poor.Observations in the study area showed that unhygienic food practices,such as eating raw and unwashed fruit or playing in vegetable gardens previously fertilised with human faeces,posed major STH infection risks.Conclusions:It was crucial to assess the intellectual,emotional,social and cultural background of the target population prior to video production in order to integrate the key messages of the cartoon into everyday situations.Overall,our strategy for the development of the cartoon and its incorporation into a health education package proved successful,and we provide a summary of recommendations for the development of future educational videos based on our experiences in China. | Franziska A Bieri Li-Ping Yuan Yue-Sheng Li Yong-Kang He Andrew Bedford Robert S Li Feng-Ying Guo Sheng-Ming Li Gail M Williams Donald P McManus Giovanna Raso Darren J Gray | 2013 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2013，2，1： | 2 |

| 11 | Effect of body mass index on functional outcome in primary total knee arthroplasty——a single institution analysis of 2180 primary total knee replacements显示文摘AIM To evaluate the effect of body mass index(BMI) on short-term functional outcome and complications in primary total knee arthroplasty. METHODS All patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty at a single institution between 2007 and 2013 were identified from a prospective arthroplasty database. 2180 patients were included in the study. Age, gender, BMI, pre- and post-operative functional scores [Western Ontario and Mc Master University Arthritis Index(WOMAC) and SF-36], complications and revision rate were recorded. Patients were grouped according to the WHO BMI classification. The functional outcome of the normal weight cohort(BMI < 25) was compared to the overweight and obese(BMI ≥ 25) cohort. A separate sub-group analysis was performed comparing all five WHO BMI groups; Normal weight, overweight, class 1 obese, class 2 obese and class 3 obese.RESULTS With a mean age of 67.89(28-92), 2180 primary total knee replacements were included. 64.36%(1403) were female. The mean BMI was 31.86(18-52). Ninty-three percent of patients were either overweight or obese. Mean follow-up 19.33 mo(6-60 mo). There was no significant difference in pre or post-operative WOMAC score in the normal weight(BMI < 25) cohort compared to patients with a BMI ≥ 25(P > 0.05). Sub-group analysis revealed significantly worse WOMAC scores in class 2 obese 30.80 compared to overweight 25.80(P < 0.01) and class 1 obese 25.50(P < 0.01). Similarly, there were significantly worse SF-36 scores in class 2 obese 58.16 compared to overweight 63.93(P < 0.01) and class 1 obese 63.65(P < 0.01) There were 32(1.47%) superficial infections, 9(0.41%) deep infections and 19(0.87%) revisions overall with no complications or revisions in the normal weight cohort(BMI < 25).CONCLUSION Post-operative functional outcome was not influenced by BMI comparing normal weight individuals with BMI > 25.
