1The Influence of Biochar on Growth of Lettuce and Potato显示文摘Pot experiments were conducted in a glasshouse to determine the growth pattern of lettuce, true potato seedlings(TPS) and single node cuttings of TPS in response to biochar. The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with 5 treatments(0, 10, 30, 50 and 100 t ha-1) of biochar from greenwaste with 5 replications in lettuce, 10 in TPS and 5 in single node cuttings of TPS. The observations recorded on growth parameters showed that biochar had significant effect on growth of lettuce but no consistent effect on growth of TPS and single node cuttings. Among the biochar rates, 30 t ha-1 had the greatest influence on overall growth of lettuce. The pH and electrical conductivity increased as the biochar rates increased in all experiments. These results provide an avenue for soil management system by using biochar as an amendment in horticultural crops. 6A Systematic Approach to Investigating Microbiological Infection Sources in the Brewing Process显示文摘During the various stages of brewing that follow kettle boil,the product is vulnerable to infection by undesirable microorganisms.An infection can manifest itself as higher than normal counts for microorganisms or through the appearance of an undesirable microorganism that can harm the prod-uct.It may also be that a brewery is adhering to a new,more stringent set of microbiological stand-ards.Meeting these new standards can present particular challenges for older breweries,since their process equipment was not designed with the new standards in mind.Finding the infection source is an important first step toward taking action to elim-inate it.However,this can be a ificult task due to the large number of possible variables that exist at every stage of the process.Introduced materials,equipment design, poor hygienic procedures, oreven environmental factors can all act as infectionsources. In this paper a method to systematicallyinvestigate infection sources and eliminate suspectareas is described.
