1Therapeutic effects of Byrsocarpus coccineus root bark extract on bacterially and chemically induced diarrhea in the Wistar albino rat(Rattus norvegicus domestica)显示文摘Background : Diarrhea can be caused by pathogenic microorganisms and chemicals. In view of this, Byrsocarpus coccineus Schum and Thonn(Connaraceae) was used to treat diarrhea induced by castor oil or bacteria in Wistar albino rats. Methods : Qualitative and quantitative analyses of an aqueous root back extract of B. coccineus were made and the acute toxicity, antidiarrhea properties, and in vitro and in vivo antimicrobial activities of the extract were investigated in rats. Results : The phytochemical analysis of the root bark extract revealed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloid, saponins, tannins, and phenols. The quantitative analysis showed that saponins formed 10.6% of the extract, tannins 7.6%, flavonoids 6.2%, phenol 5.8% and alkaloids 4.4%. A dose limit of 5000 mg/kg was safe to use in the rats. At a dose of 100 mg/kg, the extract decreased distance travelled by activated charcoal in the gastrointestinal tract, frequency of defecation, and number of unformed faeces caused by castor oil-induced diarrhea, and led to 74.96% inhibition of the diarrhea effects. Escherichia coli and Salmonella pullorum were susceptible to higher concentrations of the extract with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.3125 mg/m L. E. coli-infected rats showed depression, weight loss, anorexia, diarrhea, and weakness, which was ameliorated by the extract on day 2 post treatment. Observed congestion, cellular infiltration and necrosis of the liver, intestine and kidney following infection were improved by the extract. Conclusion : B. coccineus extract can be used in the treatment of anaemia, and castor oil-and E. coli-induced diarrhea in rats.Ejeh Augustine Sunday Patrick Azubuike Onyeyili Saganuwan Alhaji Saganuwan 2019Animal Models and Experimental Medicine2019,2,4:2
2Effect of methanolic extract of Tetrapleura tetraptera(Schum and Thonn)Taub leaves on hyperglycemia and indices of diabetic complications in alloxan-induced diabetic rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate the ameliorative role of Tetrapleura tetraplera(Schum and Thonn)Taub(T.tetraplera)leaf in hyperglycemia with associated conditions like oxidative stress, kidney damage and disorders in lipid metabolism. Methods:Five groups of five rats each intraperitoneally received the following treatment schedules for 7 d:untreated normal control, untreated alloxan-diabetic control, diabetic treated with glibenclamide, normal rats treated with extract(50 mg/kg)and diabetic rats treated with the extract.Evaluations were made for fasting blood sugar, body weight changes, malondialdehyde, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, bilirubin, superoxide dismutase, catalase, lipid profile, packed cell volume, hemoglobin, urea and creatinine in all the rats. Results:Whereas the untreated diabetic rats showed a significant decrease(P<0.05)in packed cell volume, superoxide dismutase, catalase and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol with a concomitant increase in the levels of malondialdehyde, fasting blood sugar, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, bilirubin, urea and creatinine, administration of methanolic extract of T.tetraplera leaf or glibenclamide alleviated these altered parameters in the treated rats. Conclusions:Methanolic extract of T.tetraplera leaves possesses a potent capacity for treatment of diabetes and the accompanying complications, including oxidative stress and hyperlipidemia.Sunday Ene-Ojo Atawodi Ojochenemi Ejeh Yakubu Mubarak Labaran Liman Dorothy Uju iliemene 2014Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2014,4,4:1

10Heavy metals and health risk analysis of arable farmlands in selected local government areas of Taraba State,Nigeria显示文摘The soil environment is a reservoir of nutrients as well as pollutants, and because of this, most of our food items are ladened with lots of pollutants ranging from fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides to heavy metals(HM).The consumption of these contaminated food items has serious implication on the health and economic status of the populace. These pollutants have also been implicated in causing several problems to plants. This study investigated heavy metals and health risk analysis of arable farmlands in selected Local Government Areas(Donga,Ussa and Takum)of Taraba state Nigeria.Samples obtained were processed and the concentration of following heavy metals(Pb,Cd,Cr,Hg,and As)were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry(AAS).The results showed that Chromium had a very high concentration across all the study areas with values ranging from 1.40mg/kg to 2.30 mg/kg.The concentration of Cadmium and Arsenic were moderate, with values ranging from 0.03mg/kg to 0.08mg/kg while Lead and Mercury had the lowest concentration of less than 0.03mg/kg across the three LGAs respectively. The following ecological and health risk assessments parameters;Target Cancer Risk or Target Hazard Quotient(THQ),Hazard Index(HI)and Estimated Daily Intake(EDI)were determined to assess the carcinogenic health risks by consuming produce from such farmlands.Ussa LGA recorded the highest concentration of heavy metals, with the highest health risk index followed by Takum whereas Donga had the lowest risk factors from the analysis. The study showed bioaccumulation of toxicants from the soil to crops and grazing plants across the study areas which was as a result of chemical farming that polluted and contaminated the soil, thus posing risk to the populace.Bilyaminu Habibu Otitoju Olawale Francis Yakubu Ojochenemi Ejeh Moses Adondua Abah 2023Toxicology Advances2023,5,4:0
