| 1 | Etiology and therapeutic management of neonatal jaundice in Iran:a systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘Background Jaundice is a life-threatening disorder in the neonates.In the present study,we aimed to assess systematically available evidence on causes and management of jaundice in Iranian newborn patients.Methods We searched the databases of PubMed,Web of Sciences,Scopus and Google Scholar for English articles published since inception until May 2019.A search was also done for Persian articles in Magiran and Scientific Information Database.Studies were evaluated based on predefined criteria by two reviewers.Data analysis was performed by STATA software.Results A total of 33 articles were finally included.The overall pooled prevalence of causes of jaundice among Iranian neonates was as follows:ABO blood groups incompatibility,16.9%[95%confidence interval(CI)10.9-22.8];Rh blood group incompatibility,4%(95%CI 2.5-5.5);ABO and Rh blood groups incompatibility,3.6%(95%CI 0-7.7);glucose6-phosphate dehydrogenase(G6PD)deficiency,6.3%(95%CI 5.1-7.5);infection,6.6%(95%CI 5.2-8.1);hypothyroidism,4.2%(95%CI 0.1-8.3);infant of diabetic mother:2.3%(95%CI 0.1-4.5);unknown,50.7%(95%CI 33.4-68);cephalohematoma,0.6%(95%CI 0.3-0.9).Regarding treatment of icterus,seven and eight articles were found on phototherapy and exchange transfusion,respectively.In five studies,all patients underwent phototherapy,but rate of exchange transfusion use was between 6.6%and 50.9%.Conclusions According to the results,unknown factors were the most common causes of icterus in Iranian neonates,followed by ABO blood groups incompatibility,infections and G6PD deficiency.By the way,phototherapy and exchange transfusion were found as therapeutic choices of neonatal jaundice. | Yadollah Zahed Pasha Shaghayegh Alizadeh-Tabari Ermia Zahed Pasha Mohammad Zamani | 2020 | World Journal of Pediatrics2020,16,5: | 23 |
| 2 | Non-timber forest products and household incomes in Bonga forest area,southwestern Ethiopia显示文摘We identified the major non-timber forest products(NTFPs),their contributions to household incomes,and the determinants influencing engagement of households in using NTFPs in the Bonga forest area of Gimbo and Decha Districts of Kaffa Zone,southwest Ethiopia.Six Kebeles(the lowest administrative unit in Ethiopia)were sampled from two Districts and 150 households were randomly sampled using proportionalto-size techniques based on the number of farm households in each Kebele.Secondary data were collected from and focus group discussions were conducted with selected individuals.The farmers diversified livelihood activities such as crop and livestock production,collection of NTFPs and off-farm activities.NTFPs played a significant role in household incomes.The contribution from the major NTFPs(forest coffee,honey and spices)accounted for 47%of annual household income.The role of NTFPs was influenced by a number of factors.Variables including being native to the area(+),total land holding(+),possession of livestock(+)and access to extension(+)significantly affected forest coffee production.Age of household head(-),land holding(+)and distance of the market from the residence(-)significantly affected honey production.Size of landholding(+),distance to market(-)and distance of the forest from the residence(-)were significant variables determining the NTFP incomes derived by the households.Attention is needed in the design of policies and strategies for the well-being of households to the contribution of NTFPs to local incomes and the variables that affect the collection of NTFPs must be considered. | Ermias Melaku Zeleke Ewnetu Demel Teketay | 2014 | Journal of Forestry Research2014,25,1: | 5 |
| 3 | Elevational changes in vascular plants richness, diversity, and distribution pattern in Abune Yosef mountain range, Northern Ethiopia显示文摘The aim of this research is to investigate the patterns of vascular plant species richness,diversity,and distribution along an elevation gradient in the Abune Yosef mountain range,Ethiopia.Preferential systematic sampling was employed to collect vegetation and environmental data along the elevation gradient.We found that plant species richness declines monotonically from low to high elevations.Specifically,vascular plant species richness and diversity were lower in the Afroalpine grassland(high elevation)than in the Dry evergreen Afromontane forest and Ericaceous forest(low elevations).In contrast,endemic vascular plant richness was significantly higher in the Afroalpine grassland than in the Dry evergreen Afromontane forest and Ericaceous forest.Elevation showed a significant impact on the richness,diversity,and endemism of vascular plants.According to Sorensen's coefficient,the similarity between Dry evergreen Afromontane forest and Ericaceous forest vegetation types is higher(32%)than the similarity between Ericaceous forest and Afroalpine grassland(18%).Only 5%similarity was recorded between the Dry evergreen Afromontane forest and Afroalpine grassland.Growth forms showed different elevationai richness patterns.Trees and liana increased monotonically up to 3300 m.Shrub and herb richness patterns followed a hump-shaped and inverted hump-shaped pattern along the elevation gradient.The elevation patterns of vascular plant species richness,diversity,and growth form in the present study may be attributed to differences in management intensity,spatial heterogeneity,microclimatic variations,and anthropogenic disturbances. | Kflay Gebrehiwot Sebsebe Demissew Zerihun Woldu Mekbib Fekadu Temesgen Desalegn Ermias Teferi | 2019 | Plant Diversity2019,41,4: | 5 |
| 4 | Floristic diversity and regeneration status of woody plants in Zengena Forest, a remnant montane forest patch in northwestern Ethiopia显示文摘The study was conducted at Zengena forest, a fragmented remnant montane forest in northwestern Ethiopia, which surrounds Lake Zengena. The purpose was to assess the species composition, diversity and the regeneration status of woody plants. A total of 27 plots of 20 m × 20 m were sampled along the line transects laid down the altitudinal gradient from the edge of the forest encompassing the lake to the edge of the lake in eight aspects. In each plot, woody species were counted and the diameter at breast height and the height of trees and shrubs were measured. A total of 50 woody species belonging to 31 families were found, of which 17(34%) were trees, 7(14%) trees or shrubs, 23(46%) shrubs and 3(6%) lianas. The overall Shannon-Wiener diversity and evenness indices of woody species were 2.74 and 0.7, respectively. Clausena anisata had the highest relative density(23.5%), Rapanea rhododendroides the highest relative frequency(6.5%) and Prunus africana the highest relative dominance(45%) and importance value index(IVI, 51.6). The total basal area and density of woody plants were 22.3 m2?ha-1 and 2,202 individuals?ha-1, respectively. The population structure showed variations among woody plants and revealed varied regeneration patterns of different species. The importance value index and population structure revealed that some species are threatened and need prioritization for conservation measures. | 12 | Ecological and floristic study of Hirmi woodland vegetation in Tigray Region,Northern Ethiopia显示文摘The dryland area in Ethiopia covers a substantial region endowed with diverse plant resources.However,the landmass has received less attention even if it has high ecological,environmental,and economic uses.The present study was conducted in Hirmi woodland vegetation,which is one of the dryland areas in Ethiopia,with the objective of investigating the floristic composition,plant community types,vegetation structure,communityenvironment relations and its regeneration status.Vegetation and environmental data were collected from 80 sampling plots with a size of 25 m×25 m designated as the main plots.Diameter at breast height(DBH),height,basal area,density,vertical structure,importance value index(IVI),and frequency were computed.Species diversity and evenness were analyzed using Shannon diversity and evenness indices.The plant community types and vegetation-environment relationships were analyzed using classification and ordination tools,respectively.A total of 171 vascular plant species belonging to 135 genera and 56 families were recorded.About 5.3%of the species were endemic and near-endemic to Ethiopia.The highest number of species was recorded in families Fabaceae(16.4%)and Poaceae(11.7%)followed by Asteraceae(7.0%),Combretaceae,Lamiaceae,and Moraceae(3.5%each).Five plant communities were identified.According to the results from ordination analysis,the floristic composition of these plant communities was significantly affected by altitude,slope,sand,silt,soil organic matter,total nitrogen,and disturbance.The vegetation structure reveals that a large number of individual species was categorized in the lower DBH,frequency,and height classes.The highest Shannon diversity index and evenness values of the study area were 4.21 and 0.95,respectively.Anogeissus leiocarpa,Combretum hartmannianum,Ziziphus mucronata,Terminalia macroptera,and Acacia polyacantha were the species with high IVI.Some endemic plants were in the IUCN red list categories of Ethiopia and Eritrea.The overall regeneration status of the study area was poor because of anthropogenic disturbances and grazing pressures.Although the study area is endowed with high plant species diversity including endemism,it is under poor regeneration status due to various disturbances.To overcome this challenge,integrated management measures including monitoring and application of restoration techniques by taking into consideration the significant environmental factors associated with species diversity as well as observed regeneration status and IUCN threat level of the species are highly recommended. | Mehari Girmay Tamrat Bekele Sebsebe Demissew Ermias Lulekal | 2020 | Ecological Processes2020,9,1: | 1 |

| 16 | 牧豆树(Prosopis juliflora)入侵对埃塞俄比亚东北部阿法尔民族地区国家牧场本地物种多样性和木本植物更新的影响显示文摘调查牧豆树(Prosopis juliflora)的入侵及其对本土植物物种的影响和控制该物种入侵具有重要意义。本研究旨在评估:(1)牧豆树入侵对Awash Fentale和Amibara Woredas两地植物物种多样性的影响;(2)牧豆树入侵对本地木本植物更新潜力的影响。样品采集是在牧豆树灌丛、牧豆树与本地物种混生群落、未入侵林地和开阔放牧场进行的。植被调查按照牧豆树的入侵状况分类,然后在不同入侵状况生境中采用随机抽样技术进行数据收集。在植物种类组成中,非入侵林地记录的物种比例最高,为87个(占27.4%),而开阔放牧地记录的物种比例最低,为70个(占22%)。牧豆树的入侵降低了植物的香农多样性指数,香农多样性指数(H’)和物种丰富度(R)的平均值在牧豆树与本地物种混生群落(H’=2.22,R=14)和未入侵林地(H’=2.23,R=13)显著高于牧豆树灌丛(H′=1.96,R=12)和开阔放牧场(H′=1.84,R=10)。在牧豆树与本地物种混生的群落下,本地植物更新苗总密度最高,为358株ha-1,而在牧豆树灌丛下更新幼苗密度最低,为153株ha-1。此外,本地木本植物更新苗密度在牧豆树灌丛下仅为102株ha-1,而在未入侵林地下却高达1252株ha-1。如果牧豆树入侵及其对本地物种多样性的影响继续,外加气候干旱,阿法尔植物区系的植物多样性将受到严重影响,其生态系统服务的变化存在着不确定性。因此,所有利益相关方应参与,并采取多学科研究应用于研究区的牧豆树管理和牧场恢复。 | WAKSHUM SHIFERAW SEBSEBE DEMISSEW TAMRAT BEKELE ERMIAS AYNEKULU | 2023 | Journal of Resources and Ecology2023,14,1: | 0 |
| 17 | Tribological behavior of ZK60Gd alloy reinforced by SiC particles after precipitation hardening显示文摘In this research, the effect of precipitation hardening on the tribological behavior of the ZK60Gd/SiC composite was studied. For this purpose, ZK60Gd alloy containing with 5 and 10 wt% SiC were produced with stir casting method. The microstructure characterization of the samples showed the wide distributions of Mg_(7)Zn_(3) and Gd(Mg_(0.5)Zn_(0.5)) precipitates were formed during casting. The results of hardness measurement after precipitation hardening at different temperatures showed that the hardness peck was obtained at 175 ℃. The wear tests with different loads(10, 40, 60, 90, and 120 N) and velocities(0.1, 0.3, 0.6, and 0.9 m/s) were performed on the as-cast and heat treated sample at 125, 175, and 225 for 12 h. Between the different precipitation hardening conditions, the precipitation hardened samples at 175 ℃ had the highest hardness values and least wear rate. The sample containing 10% reinforcement had the least wear rate between the unreinforced alloy and the composites. The results showed that abrasive, adhesive, delamination, MML, and fatigue wear mechanisms were the dominant wear mechanisms for the composite samples. | 18 | Rumen microbial degradation of bromoform from red seaweed(Asparagopsis taxiformis)and the impact on rumen fermentation and methanogenic archaea显示文摘Background The red macroalgae Asparagopsis is an effective methanogenesis inhibitor due to the presence of halogenated methane(CH_(4))analogues,primarily bromoform(CHBr_(3)).This study aimed to investigate the degradation process of CHBr3 from A taxiformis in the rumen and whether this process is diet-dependent.An in vitro batch culture system was used according to a 2×2 factorial design,assessing two A taxiformis inclusion rates[0(CTL)and 2%DM diet(AT)]and two diets[high-concentrate(HC)and high-forage diet(HF)].Incubations lasted for 72 h and samples of headspace and fermentation liquid were taken at 0,0.5,1,3,6,8,12,16,24,48 and 72 h to assess the pattern of degradation of CHBr_(3) into dibromomethane(CH_(2)Br_(2))and fermentation parameters.Additionally,an in vitro experiment with pure cultures of seven methanogens strains(Methanobrevibacter smithii,Methanobrevibacter ruminantium,Methanosphaera stadtmanae,Methanosarcina barkeri,Methanobrevibacter millerae,Methanorhermobacter wolfei and Methanobacterium mobile)was conducted to test the effects of increasing concentrations of CHBr3(0.4,2,10and 50μmol/L).Results The addition of AT significantly decreased CH_(4) production(P=0.002)and the acetate:propionate ratio(P=0.003)during a 72-h incubation.The concentrations of CHBr_(3) showed a rapid decrease with nearly 90%degraded within the first 3 h of incubation.On the contrary,CH_(2)Br_(2) concentration quickly increased during the first 6 h and then gradually decreased towards the end of the incubation.Neither CHBr_(3) degradation nor CH_(2)Br_(2) synthesis were affected by the type of diet used as substrate,suggesting that the fermentation rate is not a driving factor involved in CHBr_(3)degradation.The in vitro culture of methanogens showed a dose-response effect of CHBr3 by inhibiting the growth of M.smithii,M.ruminantium,M.stadtmanae,M.barkeri,M.millerae,M.wolfei,and M.mobile.Conclusions The present work demonstrated that CHBr_(3) from A.taxiformis is quickly degraded to CH_(2)Br_(2)in the rumen and that the fermentation rate promoted by different diets is not a driving factor involved in CHBr_(3)degradation. | Pedro Romero Alejandro Belanche Elisabeth Jiménez Rafael Hueso Eva Ramos-Morales Joan King Salwen Ermias Kebreab David R.Yáñez-Ruiz | 2024 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2024,15,1: | 0 |
| 19 | Soil organic carbon stock in Abune Yosef afroalpine and sub-afroalpine vegetation,northern Ethiopia显示文摘Introduction:Soil is the major reservoir of organic carbon.There is a paucity of soil organic carbon(SOC)stock data of afroalpine and sub-afroalpine vegetation in Ethiopia.Hence,this study was conducted to estimate the SOC stock and correlate it with soil physicochemical properties in Abune Yosef afroalpine and sub-afroalpine vegetation.Systematic sampling was employed to collect soil samples from upper 30 cm.Dry bulk density soil pH(1:2.5 water);organic carbon(Walkley and Black),and total nitrogen(Kjeldahl)were the methods used for soil analysis.Pearson correlation and linear regression analysis were performed in SPSS 24 statistical software.Results:The SOC stock of the study area was found to be 79.57 t C ha−1.Soil organic carbon stock showed statistically significant positive correlation with vegetation type(r=0.522,p<0.01),bulk density(r=0.62,p<0.01),total nitrogen(r=0.41,p<0.01),and altitude(r=0.468,p<0.01)and negative correlation with slope(r=−0.298,p<0.05).The present study revealed similar soil organic carbon stock(SOCS)with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC)default estimate for similar regions.Positive correlation of SOCS and altitude could be resulted from the variations in anthropogenic disturbances,temperature,and precipitation vegetation types.The negative correlation between SOCS and slope is the result from the predictably higher soil erosion at steeper slopes.Temporal livestock trampling increased the bulk density but never affected the SOCS to decline.Aspect did not show any significant relationship with SOCS due to either the under surveying of all aspects or similar solar radiation found in the study area.Moreover,gazing,aspect,and soil pH did not show statistically significant impact on SOCS.Conclusion:The SOCS of Abune Yosef afroalpine and sub-afroalpine vegetation is similar to the IPCC default estimate for similar regions.This is a great contribution both to the global and local terrestrial carbon sink. | Kflay Gebrehiwot Temesgen Desalegn Zerihun Woldu Sebsebe Demissew Ermias Teferi | 2018 | Ecological Processes2018,7,1: | 0 |
| 20 | Invasion of Prosopis juliflora and its effects on soil physicochemical properties in Afar region,Northeast Ethiopia显示文摘Woody species within pastures and savannas are often associated with‘resource islands’characterized by higher fertility under canopies trees.The aims of this study were to evaluate(1)the effects of Prosopis juliflora on some soil physicochemical properties and(2)the impacts of Prosopis invasion on soil salinity.For soil physicochemical analysis,a total of 104 soil samples from Teru and Yalo Districts were collected.The soil samples were collected from soil depths of 0-15 cm and 15-30 cm in Prosopis invaded and non-invaded open grazing lands.Invasion of Prosopis had significantly affected soil pH,exchangeable Na^(+),water soluble Ca^(2+)+Mg^(2+),water soluble Na^(+),and exchangeable sodium percentage in Teru and Yalo Districts(p<0.05).The invasion of Prosopis significantly increased soil pH(1.5%),but decreased exchangeable Na^(+)(24.2%),exchangeable sodium percentage(21.6%),and water soluble Ca^(2+)+Mg^(2+)(39.9%)than non-invaded lands.Clay content of Prosopis invaded lands was higher by 19%than non-invaded lands.However,sand content of soil was higher under non-invaded lands by 5.6%than Prosopis invaded lands.Most results indicated that invasion of Prosopis had positive effects on physicochemical properties and thus conducive for cereal crops and forages. | Wakshum Shiferaw Sebsebe Demissew Tamrat Bekele Ermias Aynekulu Wolfgang Pitroff | 2021 | International Soil and Water Conservation Research2021,9,4: | 0 |
