2Neurological and behavioral manifestations of cerebral malaria:An update显示文摘Neglected tropical diseases are a group of tropical diseases endemic in poor countries even though medical treatment and cures are available. They are considered a global health problem due to the severity of the physiological changes they induce in their hosts. Malaria is a disease caused by Plasmodium sp. that in its cerebral form may lead to acute or long-term neurological deficits, even with effective antimalarial therapy, causing vascular obstruction, reduced cerebral blood flow and many other changes. However, Plasmodium falciparum infection can also develop into a cerebral malaria(CM) disease that can produce neurological damage. This review will discuss the mechanisms involved in the neuropathology caused by CM, focusing on alterations in cognitive, behavior and neurological functions in human and experimental models.Marta Chagas Monteiro Fabio Rodrigues Oliveira Gedeo Batista Oliveira Pedro Roosevelt Torres Romo Cristiane Socorro Ferraz Maia 2014World Journal of Translational Medicine2014,3,1:1
3Exploring overweight and obesity beyond body mass index:A body composition analysis in people with and without patellofemoral pain显示文摘Background:We compared body mass index(BMI),body fat,and skeletal muscle mass between(1) a mixed-sex nonathletic cohort of people with patellofemoral pain(PFP) and pain-free people,and(2) a nonathletic cohort of people with PFP and pain-free people subgrouped by sex(i.e.,men and women with PFP vs.pain-free men and women). Methods:This cross-sectional study included 114 people with PFP(71 women,43 men) and 54 pain-free controls(32 women,22 men). All participants attended a single testing session to assess body composition measures, which included BMI,percentage of body fat(%BFBioimpedance),and skeletal muscle mass(both assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis),and percentage of body fat(%BFskinfoid)(assessed by skinfold caliper analysis).A one-way univariate analysis of covariance(age and physical activity levels as covariates) was used to compare body composition measures between groups(i.e.,PFP vs.pain-free group;women with PFP vs.pain-free women;men with PFP vs.pain-free men). Results:Women with PFP presented significantly higher BMI,%BFBiompedance, and %BFSkinfold, and lower skeletal muscle mass compared to pain-free women(p≤0.04;effect size:-0.47 to 0.85).Men with PFP and men and women combined had no differences in BMI,%BFBioimpedance,%BFSkinfold, and skeletal muscle mass compared to their respective pain-free groups(p> 0.05).Conclusion:Our findings indicate that BMI and body composition measures should be considered as part of the evaluation and management of people with PFP,especially in women, who have demonstrated higher BMI and body fat and lower skeletal muscle mass compared to pain-free controls.Future studies should not assess body composition measures in a mixed-sex population without distinguishing men participants from women participants.Amanda Schenatto Ferreira Benjamin F Mentiplay Bianca Taborda Marcella Ferraz Pazzinatto Fabio Mıcolis de Azevedo Danilo De Oliveira Silva 2023Journal of Sport and Health Science2023,12,5:0
4Effect of applying a calcined kaolin-based particle film on the photosynthetic capacity and growth of young eucalyptus plants显示文摘In scenarios of climatic change when increased global temperatures can be expected,it is essential to search for technologies that favor sapling survival and growth after planting and increase yield in the field.Kaolin-based particle films(KBPF)have been applied as barriers against the deleterious effects of high levels of solar radiation. The objective of the present study was to assess the effects of applying purified calcined kaolin-based particle film to young eucalyptus plants.Five treatments were carried out:0%(just water),3%,5%,7%,and 10%calcined kaolin applied to the adaxial part of the leaves.A complete randomized block design was used with five treatments and ten replicates. The plants were assessed for height, diameter at ground level, gas exchanges(net photosynthetic CO_(2) assimilation, stomatal conductance and transpiration),instantaneous(WUE)and intrinsic water use efficiency(IWUE),chlorophyll a fluorescence(maximum quantum yield of photosystem II(PSII)(Fv/Fm),concentration of active reaction centers in relation to the quantity of photons absorbed(RC/ABS)and the maximum ratio of quantum yields of photochemical and concurrent non-photochemical processes in PSII(Fv/F0),SPAD reading and leaf ontogeny. The 3%KBPF concentration showed the best responses in biometric assessments 80 days after planting(DAP)and were corroborated by the responses of the leaf, stem and shoot dry matter production as a whole. The leaf ontogeny assessments showed positive responses following KBPF application when considering leaf development, with 7%KBPF concentration resulting in the highest mean values. The mean specific leaf mass had negative response to high KBPF concentrations. At 60 DAP,the gas exchange variables during both assessment periods declined with an increase in KBPF concentration.Significant differences as a result of KBPF applications were found only at the start of the assessments(34 DAP)for both WUE and for IWUE.Leaf‘greenness’(SPAD reading)at 47 days showed a quadratic relationship in both periods. The variables of chlorophyll fluorescence showed a linear response at 34 DAP and a quadratic response 60 DAP.KBPF application increased height and diameter growth in plants treated with 3%KBPF but this response was not associated with photochemical efficiency and photosynthetic carbon assimilation values on a single-leaf basis. The best performance among the variables was provided by 3%KBPF application.Diego Pereira Santos Mauriana da Rocha Sobrinho Maria de Fatima de Castro Oliveira Niedja Bezerra Costa Tiago Massi Ferraz Fabricio de Oliveira Reis Heder Braum Eliemar Campostrini Fabio Afonso Mazzei Moura de Assis Figueiredo 2021Journal of Forestry Research2021,32,6:0
5Main visual symptoms associated with refractive errors and spectacle need in a Brazilian population显示文摘·AIM: To determine the main visual symptoms in a Brazilian population sample, associated to refractive errors(REs) and spectacle need to suggest priorities in preventive programs.·METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in nine counties of the southeast region of Brazil, using a systematic sampling of households, between March 2004 and July 2005. The population was defined as individuals aged between 1 and 96 y, inhabitants of 3600 residences to be evaluated and 3012 households were included, corresponding to 8010 subjects considered for participation in the survey, of whom 7654 underwent ophthalmic examinations. The individuals were evaluated according their demographic data, eye complaints and eye examination including the RE and the need to prescribe spectacles according to age. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software package and descriptive analysis using 95% confidence intervals(P<0.05).· RESULTS: The main symptom detected was asthenopia, most frequent in the 2ndand 3rddecades of life, with a significant decline after the 4thdecade.Astigmatism was the RE most associated with asthenopia. Reduced near vision sight was more frequent in those ≥40y with a progressive decline thereafter.Spectacles were most frequently required in subjects of≥40 years of age.·CONCLUSION: The main symptom related to the vision was asthenopia and was associated to astigmatism. The greatest need for spectacles prescription occurred after40's, mainly to correct near vision. Subjects of ≥40years old were determined to be at high risk of uncorrected REs. These observations can guide intervention programs for the Brazilian population.Silvana Schellini Fabio Ferraz Paula Opromolla Laryssa Oliveira Carlos Padovani 2016International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2016,9,11:0
