11AB002.Cone rescue in retinitis pigmentosa by the treatment of Lycium barbarum(Random Clinical Trial)显示文摘Retinitis pigmentosa(RP)is a group of heredofamilial retinal diseases which is characterized by night blindness and progressive visual field loss.This study aims to study the treatment effect of Lycium barbarum(LB)on retinal functions and structure of RP patients.The study is a double-masked randomized controlled trial.RP subjects received scheduled eye examination including visual acuity(VA),Humphrey field analysis(HFA),ganzfeld flash electroretinogram(ffERG)and optical coherence tomography(OCT).The suitable subjects were randomly allocated to either LB-treatment or placebo groups with the supply of LB or placebo for 12 months.There were total 41 RP subjects(22 in LB group and 19 in placebo group)completed the 12 months intervention.The compliance rates for LB and placebo groups were 89.8%±12.5%and 85.3%±7.7%respectively.As compared with placebo group,there were no deteriorations of both high and low contrast VA in LB group(P<0.01).In addition,certain improvements of scotopic rod response and photopic cone response of ffERG were obtained in LB group(P<0.05).In the OCT measurement,an obvious thinning of macular thickness was observed in placebo group but not found in LB group(P<0.05).However,there were no changes found in the sensitivity of central visual field between two groups.Our results confirm that the 12-month LB treatment for RP patients had neuroprotective effect on retina and is believed to delay or minimize the deterioration of visual function in RP.Henry Chan Hang-I Lam Kwok-Fai So Raymond Chuen-Chung Chang Shiu-Ming Lai Chi-Wai Do Iris F.F.Benzie Chin-Pan Leung Kai-Yip Choi Man-Pan Chin Zhe-Chuang Li Wing-Yan Yu 2017Annals of Eye Science2017,,1:0
12How to secure the connection between thoracostomy tube and drainage system?显示文摘BACKGROUND: Thoracostomy tube insertion is one of the common bedside procedures in emergency medicine and many acute specialties. Dislodgement of thoracostomy tube from the connection tube of chest drainage system is an important problem with potential complications such as contamination, infection and pneumothorax. Besides, mere loosening can also lead to malfunction. It is a common practice to tape the connection of the system. This study aimed to evaluate the materials and methods of connection of chest drain system to minimize drainage dislodgement. METHODS: We conducted an experimental study to assess the tightness of the connection with various taping materials and methods. We selected three commonly used adhesive materials(3M^(tm) Transpore^(tm) Medical tape, 3M^(tm) Micropore^(tm) Medical tape, 3M^(tm) Soft Cloth Tape on Liner) and three different methods(cross method, straight method, nylon band) to secure the junction between the thoracostomy tube and the bi-conical adaptor in the drainage system. The measured outcome was the weight causing visible loosening of the junction between thoracotomy tube and the adaptor.RESULTS: For each taping material and taping method, 10 trials were performed. The median weight required to disconnect the junction is 26.22 lb for Transpore^(tm), 31.29 lb for Micropore^(tm) and 32.44 lb for Soft Cloth Tape on Liner. A smaller force was required to disconnect if Transpore^(tm) is used(P<0.001). There was no statistical signifi cant difference between Micropore^(tm) and Soft Cloth Tape on Liner(P=0.98). The median disconnecting force is 32.44 lb for straight taping method, 40.55 lb for cross taping method and 21.15 lb for plastic band. The cross-taping method was the more secure method(P<0.0001 when compared with plastic band)(P=0.033 when compared with straight method).CONCLUSION: Cross-taping is the most secure method among the tested varieties in connecting the thoracostomy tube to the chest drainage system. 13Potential role of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides in glaucoma management:evidence from preclinical in vivo studies显示文摘In recent years,the pharmacological benefits of herbal extracts have been revisited for their potential neuroprotective effects in glaucoma.The polysaccharides extracted from the fruits of Lycium barbarum L.,or Lycium barbarum polysaccharides,exert their anti-aging effect through reducing oxidative stress,modulating the immune response,enhancing neuronal responses,and promoting cytoprotection.The therapeutic efficacy of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides in preserving retinal ganglion cells and their functions was demonstrated in a range of experimental models of optic neuropathies.These include the acute and chronic ocular hypertension models,the partial optic nerve transection model,and the ischemic-reperfusion injuries model.Based on these findings,Lycium barbarum polysaccharides appear to be a good candidate to be developed as a neuroprotective agent for treating multifactorial diseases.This review aims to present a comprehensive review on the latest preclinical evidence on the pre-and post-treatment benefits of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides in retinal ganglion cell neuroprotection.The possible mechanisms of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides mediating retinal ganglion cell neuroprotection will also be described.Moreover,the potential research gaps in the effective translation of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides treatment into clinical glaucoma management will be discussed.Yamunadevi Lakshmanan Francisca Siu Yin Wong Kwok-Fai So Henry Ho-Lung Chan 2023Neural Regeneration Research2023,18,12:0
