3Impact of the source and serial passaging of goat mesenchymal stem cells on osteogenic differentiation potential:implications for bone tissue engineering显示文摘Background: Adult mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) can be conveniently sampled from bone marrow, peripheral blood, muscle, adipose and connective tissue, harvested from various species, including, rodents, dogs, cats, horses,sheep, goats and human beings. The MSCs isolated from adult tissues vary in their morphological and functional properties. These variations are further complicated when cells are expanded by passaging in culture. These differences and changes in MSCs must be considered prior to their application in the clinic or in a basic research study. Goats are commonly used as animal models for bone tissue engineering to test the potential of stem cells for bone regeneration. As a result, goat MSCs isolated from bone marrow or adipose tissue should be evaluated using in vitro assays, prior to their application in a tissue engineering project.Results: In this study, we compared the stem cell properties of MSCs isolated from goat bone marrow and adipose tissue. We used quantitative and qualitative assays with a focus on osteogenesis, including, colony forming unit, rate of cell proliferation, tri-lineage differentiation and expression profiling of key signal transduction proteins to compare MSCs from low and high passages. Primary cultures generated from each source displayed the stem cell characteristics,with variations in their osteogenic potentials. Most importantly, low passaged bone marrow MSCs displayed a significantly higher and superior osteogenic potential, and hence, will be the preferred choice for bone tissue engineering in future in vivo experiments. In the bone marrow MSCs, this process is potentially mediated by the p38 MAPK pathway. On the other hand, osteogenic differentiation in the adipose tissue MSCs may involve the p44/42 MAPK pathway.Conclusions: Based on these data, we can conclude that bone marrow and fat-derived MSCs undergo osteogenesis via two distinct signaling pathways. 5Geographical distribution of the incidence of gastric cancer in Bhutan显示文摘AIM: To estimate the prevalence of gastric cancer(GC) in a cohort of patients diagnosed with GC and to compare it with patients diagnosed with all other types of gastro-intestinal(GI) cancer during the same period.METHODS: Between 2008 and 2013,five-year period,the medical records of all GI cancer patients who underwent medical care and confirm diagnosis of cancer were reviewed at the National Referral Hospital,Thimphu which is the only hospital in the country where surgical and cancer diagnosis can be made. Demographic information,type of cancer,and the year of diagnosis were collected.RESULTS: There were a total of 767 GI related cancer records reviewed during the study period of which 354(46%) patients were diagnosed with GC. There were 413 patients with other GI cancer including; esophagus,colon,liver,rectum,pancreas,gall bladder,cholangiocarcinoma and other GI tract cancers. The GC incidence rate is approximately 0.9/10000 per year(367 cases/5years per 800000 people). The geographic distribution of GC was the lowest in the south region of Bhutan 0.3/10000 per year compared to the central region 1.4/10000 per year,Eastern region 1.2/10000 per year,and the Western region 1.1/10000 per year. Moreover,GC in the South part was significantly lower than the other GI cancer in the same region(8% vs 15%; OR = 1.8,95%CI: 1.3-3.1,P = 0.05). Among GC patients,38% were under the age of 60 years,mean age at diagnosis was 62.3(± 12.1) years with male-to-female ratio 1:0.5. The mean age among patients with all other type GI cancer was 60 years(± 13.2) and male-tofemale ratio of 1:0.7. At time of diagnosis of GC,342(93%) were at stage 3 and 4 of and by the year 2013; 80(23%) GC patients died compared to 31% death among patients with the all other GI cancer(P = 0.08).CONCLUSION: The incidence rate of GC in Bhutan is twice as high in the United States but is likely an underestimate rate because of unreported and undiagnosed cases in the villages. The high incidence of GC in Bhutan could be attributed to the high prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection that we previously reported. The lowest incidence of GC in Southern part of the country could be due to the difference in the ethnicity as most of its population is of Indian and Nepal origin. 7Parameters Affecting Energy Consumption for Producing High Carbon Ferromanganese in a Closed Submerged Arc Furnace显示文摘The power consumption is considered to be the most important factor affecting the production cost of ferromanganese alloy.Different parameters affecting the energy consumption for industrial production of high carbon ferromanganese HCFeMn were investigated in a closed submerged arc furnace.The analysis of industrial data revealed that the most energy-consumed factors were the direct reduction by solid carbon,Boudouard reaction,metal and slag formation,and decomposition of fluxing materials(limestone and dolomite).To reduce the energy consumption and minimize the energy losses in the production process of HCFeMn,it was recommended to use Mn blend with minimum Mn to Fe ratio of 6and lower SiO2content or higher basicity.The added coke must be adjusted according to the material balance to prevent the over-coke and to minimize the highly endothermic'Boudouard reaction'.In addition,it was recommended to work at basic slags with the ratio of(CaO+MgO)to SiO2equal to 1.0-1.2instead of much higher slag basicity.Furthermore,the mass losses had to be minimized through adjusting the handling and charging process and to take care of all metal produced.Azza Ahmed Hossam Halfa Mohamed K.El-Fawakhry Hoda El-Faramawy Mamdouh Eissa 2014Journal of Iron and Steel Research(International)2014,21,7:3

11Egyptian heavy vacuum gas oil hydrotreating over Co-Mo/CNT and Co-Mo/γ-Al2O3 catalysts显示文摘The catalytic activity of CoMoS /CNT towards the Egyptian heavy vacuum gas oil hydrotreating was studied. The delivered CNT was functionalized with 6 mol /L HNO_3. The CNT were loaded with 12% MoO_3( by weight) and 0.7 Co /Mo atomic ratio with impregnation methods. The γ-Al_2O_3 catalyst was also prepared by impregnation method to compare both catalysts activities.The analysis tools such XRD,Raman spectroscopy,TEM,and BET were used to characterize the catalysts. The autoclave reactor was used to operate the hydrotreating experiments. The hydrotreating reactions were tested at various operating conditions of temperature 325-375 ℃,pressure 2-6 MPa,time 2-6 h,and catalyst /oil ratio( by weight) of 1 ∶75,1 ∶33 and 1 ∶10. The results revealed that the CoMoS /CNT was highly efficient for the hydrotreating more than the CoMoS /γ-Al_2O_3. Also, the hydrodesulfurization( HDS) increased with increasing catalyst /oil ratio. Additionally,results showed that the optimum condition was temperature 350℃,pressure 4 MPa,catalyst /oil ratio of 1 ∶75 for 2 h. 12Effects of herbal extracts and compounds and pharmacological agents on pulmonary fibrosis in animal models:a review显示文摘Pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs mainly in older adults, is a serious health threat with few effective treatment options. The etiological aspects of pulmonary fibrosis remain unknown, though some factors such as cigarette smoking, viral infections, surfactant protein polymorphisms, and chronic or high doses use of certain drugs are considered to be risk factors for the progression of pulmonary fibrosis. No standard treatments have been introduced in clinic yet. Although glucocorticoids and antioxidant drugs have been administered, the severe and broad-spectrum adverse effects of glucocorticoids limit their use. Efforts to identify novel therapeutic agents with improved safety profiles are therefore ongoing. In this review, the authors have described the effects of herbal extracts and compounds and certain pharmacological agents on pulmonary fibrosis in animal models. 15Analysis of MIF,FCGR2A and FCGR3A gene polymorphisms with susceptibility to pulmonary tuberculosis in Moroccan population显示文摘In order to investigate the influence of functional polymorphisms of macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF),Fcg receptors CD16A(FCGR3A) and CD32A(FCGR2A) genes on susceptibility to pulmonary tuberculosis(PTB) in the Moroccan population,we analyzed 123 patients with PTB and 154 healthy controls.The genotyping for MIF-173(G/C)(rs755622),FCGR2A-131H/R(rs1801274) and FCGR3A-158V/F(rs396991) was carried out using TaqMan SNP Genotyping Assay method.We found a statistically significant increase of the MIF-173CC homozygote genotype and MIF-173C allele frequencies in PTB patients compared with healthy controls(17.07% versus 5.84%,P=0.003;and 35.37% versus 26.30%,P=0.02;respectively).In contrast,no association was observed between FCGR2A-131H/R and FCGR3A-158V/F polymorphisms and tuberculosis disease.Our finding suggests that MIF-173C variant may play an important role in the development of active tuberculosis.Khalid Sadki Hoda Lamsyah Blanca Rueda ELmahfoud Akil Abderrahim Sadak Javier Martin Rajae El Aouad 2010Journal of Genetics and Genomics2010,37,4:2

17Experimental evaluation of Candonocypris novaezelandiae(Crustacea:Ostracoda) in the biocontrol of Schistosomiasis mansoni transmission显示文摘Objective:To test Candonocypris novaezelandiae(Baird)(C.novaezelandiae),sub-class Ostracoda,obtained from the Nile,Egypt for its predatory activity on snail,Biomphalaria alexandrina(B.alexandrina),intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni(S.mansoni)and on the free-living larval stages of this parasite(miracidia and cercariae).Methods:The predatory activity of C.novaezelandiae was determined on B.alexandrina snail(several densities of eggs,newly hatched and juveniles).This activity was also determined on S.mansoni miracidia and cercariae using different volumes of water and different numbers of larvae.C.novaezelandiae was also tested for its effect on infection of snails and on the cercarial production.Results:C.novaezelandiae was found to feed on the eggs,newly hatched and juvenile snails,but with significant reduction in the consumption in the presence of other diet like the blue green algae(Nostoc muscorum).This ostracod also showed considerable predatory activity on the free-living larval stages of S.mansoni which was affected by certain environmental factors such as volume of water,density of C.novaezelandiae and number of larvae of the parasite.Conclusions:The presence of this ostracod in the aquatic habitat led to significant reduction of snail population,infection rate of snails with schistosme miracidia as well as of cercarial production from the infected snails.This may suggest that introducing C.novaezelandiae into the habitat at schistosome riskv sites could suppress the transmission of the disease.Fouad Yousif Sherif Hafez Samia El Bardicy Menerva Tadros Hoda Abu Taleb 2013Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2013,3,4:2
