4Thymoquinone suppresses migration of Lo Vo human colon cancer cells by reducing prostaglandin E2 induced COX-2 activation显示文摘AIM To identify potential anti-cancer constituents in natural extracts that inhibit cancer cell growth and migration.METHODS Our experiments used high dose thymoquinone(TQ) as an inhibitor to arrest Lo Vo(a human colon adenocarcinoma cell line) cancer cell growth, which was detected by cell proliferation assay and immunoblotting assay. Low dose TQ did not significantly reduce Lo Vo cancer cell growth. Cyclooxygenase 2(COX-2) is an enzyme that is involved in the conversion of arachidonic acid into prostaglandin E2(PGE2) in humans. PGE2 can promote COX-2 protein expression and tumor cell proliferation and was used as a control.RESULTS Our results showed that 20 μmol/L TQ significantly reduced human LoV o colon cancer cell proliferation. TQ treatment reduced the levels of p-PI3 K, p-Akt, p-GSK3β, and β-catenin and thereby inhibited the downstream COX-2 expression. Results also showed that the reduction in COX-2 expression resulted in a reduction in PGE2 levels and the suppression of EP2 and EP4 activation. Further analysis showed that TG treatment inhibited the nuclear translocation of β-catenin in LoV o cancer cells. The levels of the cofactors LEF-1 and TCF-4 were also decreased in the nucleus following TQ treatment in a dose-dependent manner. Treatment with low dose TQ inhibited the COX-2 expression at the transcriptional level and the regulation of COX-2 expression efficiently reduced LoV o cell migration. 5Evaluation of remediation process with soapberry derived saponin for removal of heavy metals from contaminated soils in Hai-Pu, Taiwan显示文摘The use of a biodegradable natural plant-based surfactant extracted from soapberry is proposed for the remediation of Ni,Cr and Mn from industrial soil site in Hai-Pu,Taiwan.Batch experiments were performed under variation of fundamental factors(saponin concentration,pH,and incubation time) for metal remediation.Removal of Ni and Mn were increased with increasing saponin concentration(0.015-0.150 g/L),whereas the removal of Cr was increased upto 0.075 g/L saponin.The Ni,Cr and Mn were removed significantly(p ≤ 0.05) at near to the neutral and slightly acidic(pH 5 to 8) conditions.Removal efficiency of Ni(99%) from the soil was found to be greater than that of Cr(73%) or Mn(25%) in the presence of saponin at a concentration of 0.150 g/L at pH 5.The removal percentage increased with incubation time where the removal of Ni was faster than that of Cr and Mn.The result indicates the feasibility of eco-friendly removal of heavy metal(Ni,Cr and Mn) from industrial soil by soil washing process in presence of plant derived saponin.Jyoti Prakash Maity Yuh Ming Huang Cheng-Wei Fan Chien-Cheng Chen Chun-Yi Li Chun-Mei Hsu Young-Fo Chang Ching-I Wu Chen-Yen Chen Jiin-Shuh Jean 2013Journal of Environmental Sciences2013,25,6:11
6Relationship Between Measured Friction Coefficients and Two Tread Groove Design Parameters for Footwear Pads显示文摘The shoe sole geometrical design parameters are believed to be important factors affecting the coefficient of friction (COF) between the shoe/floor interface. This study is concerned with the relationship between the measured COF and the tread groove orientation and width on the footwear pad. Friction meas-urements using the Brungraber Mark Ⅱ slipmeter were conducted. Six tread groove width/orientations de-signs on the footwear pads under 27 footwear material/floor/contamination conditions were tested. The re-sults show that tread orientation and width affect the measured COF significantly. Wider grooved footwear pads result in higher COF values and footwear pads with tread grooves perpendicular to the friction meas-urement direction have higher COF values. A regression model using measured COF as the dependent variable and tread groove width, groove orientation, footwear material, floor, and contamination conditions as independent variables was established. 7Consumption of purple sweet potato leaves modulates human immune response: T-lymphocyte functions, lytic activity of natural killer cell and antibody production显示文摘AIM: To study the immunological effects of physiological doses of purple sweet potato leaves(PSPL). METHODS: The randomized crossover study(two periods, each lasting for 2 wk) involved 16 healthy non-smoking adults of normal weight. The 6-wk study consisted of a run-in(wk 1) PSPL diet(daily consumption of 200 g PSPL) or a control diet(low polyphenols, with the amount of carotenoids adjusted to the same level as that of PSPL)(wk 2-3), washout diet(wk 4), and switched diet(wk 5-6). Fasting blood was collected weekly in the morning. T-lymphocyte function was assessed via the proliferation and secretion of immunoreactive cytokines. Salivary IgA secretion and the specific cytotoxic activities of cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer(NK) cells were determined. RESULTS: The plasma β-carotene level increased with time in both groups, while the plasma polyphenol level decreased in the control group, and no significant difference was detected between the two groups. Although plasma polyphenol levels did not significantly increase in the PSPL group at the end of the study, they were significantly elevated in urine. PSPL consumption produced a significant increase in proliferation responsiveness of peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMC) and their secretion of immunoreactive IL-2 and IL-4. As well, lytic activity in NK cells was elevated in a time-dependent fashion. Salivary IgA secretion significantly decreased in control group after 2 wk, and returned to baseline following dietary switch to PSPL. CONCLUSION: Consumption of PSPL modulates various immune functions including increased proliferation responsiveness of PBMC, secretion of cytokines IL-2 and IL-4, and the lytic activity of NK cells. 8Use of percutaneous nephrostomy and ureteral stenting in management of ureteral obstruction显示文摘The management options for ureteral obstruction are diverse, including retrograde ureteral stent insertion or antegrade nephrostomy placement, with or without eventual antegrade stent insertion. There is currently no consensus on the ideal treatment or treatment pathway for ureteral obstruction owing, in part, to the varied etiologies of obstruction and diversity of institutional practices. Additionally, different clinicians such as internists, urologists, oncologists and radiologists are often involved in the care of patients with ureteral obstruction and may have differing opinions concerning the best management strategy. 11Impact of disease severity on gastric residual volume in critical patients显示文摘AIM: To investigate whether illness severity has an impact on gastric residual volume (GRV) in medical critically ill patients. METHODS: Medical intensive care unit (ICU) patients requiring nasogastric feeding were enrolled. Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score was assessed immediately preceding the start of the study. Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) Ⅱ scores were recorded on the first, fourth, seventh, and fourteenth day of the study period. GRV was measured every 4 h during enteral feeding. The relationship be-tween mean daily GRV and SOFA scores and the correlation between mean daily GRV and mean APACHE Ⅱ score of all patients were evaluated and compared. RESULTS: Of the 61 patients, 43 patients were survivors and 18 patients were non-survivors. The mean daily GRV increased as SOFA scores increased (P < 0.001, analysis of variance). Mean APACHE Ⅱ scores of all patients correlated with mean daily GRV (P = 0.011, Pearson correlation) during the study period. Patients with decreasing GRV in the first 2 d had better survival than patients without decreasing GRV (P = 0.017, log rank test). CONCLUSION: GRV is higher in more severely ill medical ICU patients. 12A population-based cohort study of symptomatic gallstone disease in diabetic patients显示文摘AIM:To investigate the prevalence of gallstone dis-ease(GSD) and to evaluate the risk of symptomatic GSD among diabetic patients.METHODS:The study was conducted by analyzing the National Health Research Institutes(NHRI) dataset of ambulatory care patients,inpatient claims,and the updated registry of beneficiaries from 2000 to 2008.A total of 615 532 diabetic patients without a prior history of hospital treatment or ambulatory care visits for symptomatic GSD were identified in the year 2000.Age-and gender-matched control individuals free from both GSD and diabetes from 1997 to 1999 were randomly selected from the NHIR database(n = 614 871).The incidence densities of symptomatic GSD were estimated according to the subjects' diabetic status.The distributions of age,gender,occupation,income,and residential area urbanization were compared between diabetic patients and control subjects using Cox proportion hazards models.Differences between the rates of selected comorbidities were also assessed in the two groups.RESULTS:Overall,60 734 diabetic patients and 48 116 control patients developed symptomatic GSD and underwent operations,resulting in cumulative operation rates of 9.87% and 7.83%,respectively.The age and gender distributions of both groups were similar,with a mean age of 60 years and a predominance of females.The diabetic group had a significantly higher prevalence of all comorbidities of interest.A higher incidence of symptomatic GSD was observed in females than in males in both groups.In the control group,females under the age of 64 had a significantly higher incidence of GSD than the corresponding males,but this difference was reduced with increasing age.The cumulative incidences of operations for symptomatic GSD in the diabetic and control groups were 13.06 and 9.52 cases per 1000 person-years,respectively.Diabetic men exhibited a higher incidence of operations for symptomatic GSD than did their counterparts in the control group(12.35 vs 8.75 cases per 1000 person-years).CONCLUSION:The association of diabetes with increased symptomatic GSD may provide insight to the treatment or management of diabetes in clinical settings.Chi-Ming Liu Chung-Te Hsu Chung-Yi Li Chu-Chieh Chen Meng-Lun Liu Jorn-Hon Liu 2012World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,14:7
13Cross-cultural adaption and psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Diabetes Behavior Rating Scale: a pilot study显示文摘Self-care behavior plays a major role in diabetic management. However, in China, a satisfactory instrument has not yet been developed to evaluate the compliance of self-care behavior for young patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus(T1 DM). The Diabetes Behavior Rating Scale(DBRS) has a potential to be the first mature instrument. The purpose of this study is to cross-culturally adapt the DBRS, and preliminarily evaluate its psychometric properties. The instrument translation included translation, back translation and culture adaptation. Psychometric properties were assessed in a sample of 116 young patients with T1 DM adapting insulin injection therapy. The Chinese version of the DBRS was divided to four subscales. Cronbach's α for the total scale was 0.92. The mean inter-item and item-total correlations were 0.35 and 0.54 respectively. Test-retest reliability showed good temporal stability(r=0.81, P=0.001). Negative correlations were found between DBRS scores with the Diabetes Distress Scale scores(r=.0.32, P=0.003) and hemoglobin A1 c(HbA1 c) levels(r=.0.36, P=0.002). Higher DBRS scores correlated with better glycemic control. The Chinese insulin injection therapy version of the DBRS is well translated and culturally adapted. 20Improving stability of MXenes显示文摘Due to their superior hydrophilicity and conductivity,ultra-high volumetric capacitance,and rich surface-chemistry properties,MXenes exhibit unique and excellent performance in catalysis,energy storage,electromagnetic shielding,and life sciences.Since they are derived from ceramics(MAX phase)through etching,one of the challenges in MXenes preparation is the inevitable exposure of metal atoms on their surface and embedding of anions and cations.Because the as-obtained MXenes are always in a thermodynamically metastable state,they tend to react with trace oxygen or oxygen-containing groups to form metal oxides or degrade,leading to sharply declined activity and impaired performance.Therefore,improving the stability of MXenesbased materials is of practical significance in relevant applications.Unfortunately,there lacks a comprehensive review in the literature on relevant topics.To help promote the wide applications of MXenes,we review from the following aspects:(i)insights into the factors affecting the stability of MXenes-based materials,including oxidation of MXenes flakes,stability of MXenes colloidal solutions,and swelling and degradation of MXenes thin-film,(ii)strategies for enhancing the stability of MXenes-based materials by optimizing MAX phase synthesis and modifying the MXenes preparation,and(iii)techniques for further increasing the stability of freshly prepared MXenes-based materials via controlling the storage conditions,and forming shielding on the surface and/or edge of MXenes flakes.Finally,some outlooks are proposed on the future developments and challenges of highly active and stable MXenes.We aim to provide guidance for the design,preparation,and applications of MXenes-based materials with excellent stability and activity.Jizhou Jiang Saishuai Bai Jing Zou Song Liu Jyh-Ping Hsu Neng Li Guoyin Zhu Zechao Zhuang Qi Kang Yizhou Zhang 2022Nano Research2022,15,7:4
