| 1 | Synthesis of Porous NiO Nanocrystals with Controllable Surface Area and Their Application as Supercapacitor Electrodes显示文摘We report a facile way to grow various porous NiO nanostructures including nanoslices,nanoplates,and nanocolumns,which show a structure-dependence in their specific charge capacitances.The formation of controllable porosity is due to the dehydration and re-crystallization of β-Ni(OH)_(2) nanoplates synthesized by a hydrothermal process.Thermogravimetric analysis shows that the decomposition temperature of the β-Ni(OH)_(2) nanostructures is related to their morphology.In electrochemical tests,the porous NiO nanostructures show stable cycling performance with retention of specific capacitance over 1000 cycles.Interestingly,the formation of nanocolumns by the stacking of β-Ni(OH)_(2) nanoslices/plates favors the creation of small pores in the NiO nanocrystals obtained after annealing,and the surface area is over five times larger than that of NiO nanoslices and nanoplates.Consequently,the specific capacitance of the porous NiO nanocolumns(390 F/g)is significantly higher than that of the nanoslices(176 F/g)or nanoplates(285 F/g)at a discharge current of 5 A/g.This approach provides a clear illustration of the process-structure-property relationship in nanocrystal synthesis and potentially offers strategies to enhance the performance of supercapacitor electrodes. | Xiaojun Zhang Wenhui Shi Jixin Zhu Weiyun Zhao Jan Ma Subodh Mhaisalkar Tuti Lim Maria Yanhui Yang Hua Zhang Huey Hoon Hng Qingyu Yan | 2010 | Nano Research2010,3,9: | 24 |
| 2 | Transcription analysis of peloric mutants of Phalaenopsis orchids derived from tissue culture显示文摘Tissue culture has been widely used for mass propagation of Phalaenopsis. However, somaclonal variation occurred during micropropagation process posed a severe problem by affecting product quality. In this study, wild type and peloric flower buds of Phalaenopsis hybrids derived from flower stalk nodal culture were used for cDNA-RAPD and cDNA suppression subtractive hybridization analyses in order to study their genetic difference in terms of expressed sequence tags. A total of 209 ESTs from normal flower buds and 230 from mutants were sequenced. These ESTs sequences can be grouped into several functional categories involved in different cellular processes including metabolism, signal transduction, transcription, cell growth and division, protein synthesis, and protein localization, and into a subcat- egory of proteins with unknown function. Cymbidium mosaic virus transcript was surprisingly found expressed fre- quently in the peloric mutant of P. Little Mary. Real-time RT-PCR analysis on selected ESTs showed that in mutant flower buds, a bZIP transcription factor (TGA1a-like protein) was down-regulated, while up-regulated genes include auxin-regulated protein kinase, cyclophilin, and TCP-like genes. A retroelement clone was also preferentially expressed in the peloric mutant flowers. On the other hand, ESTs involved in DNA methylation, chromatin remodeling and post- transcriptional regulation, such as DNA methyltransferase, histone acetyltransferase, ERECTA, and DEAD/DEAH RNA helicase, were enriched in normal flower buds than the mutants. The enriched transcripts in the wild type indicate the down regulation of these transcripts in the mutants, and vice versa. | 4 | Sequential organ failure assessment score is superior to other prognostic indices in acute pancreatitis显示文摘BACKGROUND Acute pancreatitis(AP)is a common surgical condition,with severe AP(SAP)potentially lethal.Many prognostic indices,including;acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II score(APACHE II),bedside index of severity in acute pancreatitis(BISAP),Glasgow score,harmless acute pancreatitis score(HAPS),Ranson’s score,and sequential organ failure assessment(SOFA)evaluate AP severity and predict mortality.AIM To evaluate these indices'utility in predicting severity,intensive care unit(ICU)admission,and mortality.METHODS A retrospective analysis of 653 patients with AP from July 2009 to September 2016 was performed.The demographic,clinical profile,and patient outcomes were collected.SAP was defined as per the revised Atlanta classification.Values for APACHE II score,BISAP,HAPS,and SOFA within 24 h of admission were retrospectively obtained based on laboratory results and patient evaluation recorded on a secure hospital-based online electronic platform.Data with<10%missing data was imputed via mean substitution.Other patient information such as demographics,disease etiology,and patient outcomes were also derived from electronic medical records.RESULTS The mean age was 58.7±17.5 years,with 58.7%males.Gallstones(n=404,61.9%),alcohol(n=38,5.8%),and hypertriglyceridemia(n=19,2.9%)were more common aetiologies.81(12.4%)patients developed SAP,20(3.1%)required ICU admission,and 12(1.8%)deaths were attributed to SAP.Ranson’s score and APACHE-II demonstrated the highest sensitivity in predicting SAP(92.6%,80.2%respectively),ICU admission(100%),and mortality(100%).While SOFA and BISAP demonstrated lowest sensitivity in predicting SAP(13.6%,24.7%respectively),ICU admission(40.0%,25.0%respectively)and mortality(50.0%,25.5%respectively).However,SOFA demonstrated the highest specificity in predicting SAP(99.7%),ICU admission(99.2%),and mortality(98.9%).SOFA demonstrated the highest positive predictive value,positive likelihood ratio,diagnostic odds ratio,and overall accuracy in predicting SAP,ICU admission,and mortality.SOFA and Ranson’s score demonstrated the highest area under receiver-operator curves at 48 h in predicting SAP(0.966,0.857 respectively),ICU admission(0.943,0.946 respectively),and mortality(0.968,0.917 respectively).CONCLUSION The SOFA and 48-h Ranson’s scores accurately predict severity,ICU admission,and mortality in AP,with more favorable statistics for the SOFA score. | Thomas Zheng Jie Teng Jun Kiat Thaddaeus Tan Samantha Baey Sivaraj K Gunasekaran Sameer P Junnarkar Jee Keem Low Cheong Wei Terence Huey Vishal G Shelat | 2021 | World Journal of Critical Care Medicine2021,10,6: | 9 |
| 5 | Oxidative stress in alcohol-related liver disease显示文摘Alcohol consumption is one of the leading causes of the global burden of disease and results in high healthcare and economic costs.Heavy alcohol misuse leads to alcohol-related liver disease,which is responsible for a significant proportion of alcohol-attributable deaths globally.Other than reducing alcohol consumption,there are currently no effective treatments for alcohol-related liver disease.Oxidative stress refers to an imbalance in the production and elimination of reactive oxygen species and antioxidants.It plays important roles in several aspects of alcohol-related liver disease pathogenesis.Here,we review how chronic alcohol use results in oxidative stress through increased metabolism via the cytochrome P4502E1 system producing reactive oxygen species,acetaldehyde and protein and DNA adducts.These trigger inflammatory signaling pathways within the liver leading to expression of pro-inflammatory mediators causing hepatocyte apoptosis and necrosis.Reactive oxygen species exposure also results in mitochondrial stress within hepatocytes causing structural and functional dysregulation of mitochondria and upregulating apoptotic signaling.There is also evidence that oxidative stress as well as the direct effect of alcohol influences epigenetic regulation.Increased global histone methylation and acetylation and specific histone acetylation inhibits antioxidant responses and promotes expression of key pro-inflammatory genes.This review highlights aspects of the role of oxidative stress in disease pathogenesis that warrant further study including mitochondrial stress and epigenetic regulation.Improved understanding of these processes may identify novel targets for therapy. | Huey K Tan Euan Yates Kristen Lilly Ashwin D Dhanda | 2020 | World Journal of Hepatology2020,12,7: | 6 |
| 6 | Capecitabine with radiation is an effective adjuvant therapy in gastric cancers显示文摘AIM:To analyze the outcome of patients who received concurrent capecitabine(Xeloda) and radiation(XRT) compared to the established concurrent 5-fluorouracil(5-FU) with radiation(5FU-RT) and fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy alone as adjuvant treatment in gastric cancers.METHODS:All patients with gastric cancers who received adjuvant treatment at the National Cancer Centre Singapore between 1996 and 2006 were reviewed.Treatment outcomes of patients who received XRT were compared with those who had 5FU-RT or chemotherapy alone as adjuvant therapy for gastric cancers.RESULTS:A total of 108 patients were reviewed.Median age at diagnosis was 60.The majority of the patients(64.8%) had advanced stage Ⅲ and Ⅳ disease(with no distant metastasis).All except 4 patients had D2 gastrectomy.Twenty one patients(19.4%) had positive surgical resection margins.Thirty three patients received XRT compared with 52 who had 5FU-RT and 23 who received chemotherapy alone.For the patients in the chemotherapy-only group,all had fluoropyrimidine-based therapy,with added cisplatin in 7 patients and epirubicin in 2 patients.Median recurrence-free survival was longer for the XRT group(52 mo) compared to the 5FU-RT(35 mo) and chemotherapy-only groups(25 mo)(P=0.48).The patients in the XRT group achieved similar median overall survival(53 mo) as the 5FU-RT(54 mo) and the chemotherapy-only groups(44 mo)(P=0.5).CONCLUSION:Capecitabine with concurrent radiation was as effective as concurrent 5FU with radiation or fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy alone when used as adjuvant treatment in patients with gastric cancers. | Chee Kian Tham Su Pin Choo Donald Yew Hee Poon Han Chong Toh Simon Yew Kuang Ong Sze Huey Tan Michael Lian Chek Wang Kian Fong Foo | 2010 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,29: | 6 |
| 7 | Progress review of US-China joint research on advanced technologies for plug-in electric vehicles显示文摘The United States and China are the world's largest automobile markets and oil consumers, and both face a severe challenge to conserve energy and reduce tailpipe emissions. Thus, both countries urgently need to transform conventional internal combustion engines to electrified powertrains. Targeting the advanced core technologies of plug-in electric vehicles(PEVs), a joint research collaboration between China and the US, called the 'Clean Vehicle Consortium'(CVC), was set up in 2010. Six years of collaboration on PEV technologies has resulted in significant progress in three technical areas. Based on CVC publications,we review herein the progress made by the CVC research efforts on three key advanced PEV technologies. This includes the development of a safe battery with an energy density of 260 W h kg^(-1) and a systematic method for designing safe traction battery systems. Thus, a breakthrough in high power density and efficient traction motor systems has occurred. In addition to discussing advanced electric-drive powertrains, we also discuss global energy management strategies that aim to improve PEV energy efficiency. | 8 | Unexpected complication of arteriovenous fistula of the left common carotid to internal jugular vein following central venous catheterization显示文摘Incidence of inadvertent arterial puncture secondary to central venous catheter insertion is not common with an arterial puncture rate of<1%.This is due to the advancements and wide availability of ultrasound to guide its insertion.Formation of arteriovenous fistula after arterial puncture is an unexpected complication.Till date,only five cases(including this case)of acquired arteriovenous fistula formation has been described due to inadvertent common carotid puncture.The present case is a 26-year-old man sustained traumatic brain injuries,chest injuries and multiple bony fractures.During resuscitative phase,attempts at left central venous catheter via left internal jugular vein under ultrasound guidance resulted in inadvertent puncture into the left common carotid artery.Surgical neck exploration revealed that the catheter had punctured through the left internal jugular vein into the common carotid artery with formation of arteriovenous fistula.The catheter was removed successfully and common carotid artery was repaired.Postoperatively,the patient recovered and clinic visits revealed no neurological deficits.From our literature review,the safest method for removal is via endovascular and open surgical removal.The pull/push technique(direct removal with compression)is not recommended due to the high risk for stroke,bleeding and hematoma formation. | Tan Chor Lip Henry Tan Jih Huei Mohamad Yuzaidi Lenny Suryani Safri K.Krishna Imran Alwi Rizal Md Idris Mohamad Azim Hanafiah Harunarashid | 2020 | Chinese Journal of Traumatology2020,23,1: | 5 |
| 9 | Combustion characteristic and aging behavior of bimetal thermite powders显示文摘Nanothermites have been employed as fuel additives in energetic formulations due to their higher energy density over CHNO energetics. Nevertheless, sintering and degradation of nanoparticles significantly limit the practical use of nanothermites. In this work, combustion characteristic and aging behavior of aluminum/iron oxide(Al/Fe2O3) nanothermite mixtures were investigated in the presence of micron-scale nickel aimed to produce bimetal thermite powders. The results showed that the alumina content in the combustion residue increased from 88.3% for Al/Fe2O3 nanothermite to 96.5% for the nanothermite mixture containing 20 wt% nickel. Finer particle sizes of combustion residue were obtained for the nanothermite mixtures containing nickel, indicative of the reduced agglomeration. Both results suggested a more complete combustion in the bimetal thermite powders. Aging behavior of the nanothermite mixture was also assessed by measuring the heat of combustion of the mixture before and after aging process. | 10 | Human papilloma virus 16 E6 oncoprotein associated with p53 inactivation in colorectal cancer显示文摘AIM:To investigate the association between human papilloma virus(HPV) infection and colorectal cancer.METHODS:Sixty-nine patients with pathologically confirmed primary colorectal cancer including 6 stage Ⅰ,24 stage Ⅱ,21 stage Ⅲ,and 18 stage Ⅳ patients were enrolled in this study to investigate whether HPV 16 could be involved in colorectal tumorigenesis.Nested-polymerase chain reaction(nested-PCR) was used to detect HPV16 DNA in colorectal tumor tissues and further confirmed by in situ hybridization(ISH).In addition,immunohistochemistry analysis was performed to examine the E6 oncoprotein in colorectal tumors.To verify whether E6 could inactivate the p53 transcriptional function,the levels of p21 and Mdm2 mRNA expression were evaluated by real-time reverse transcription(RT)-PCR.RESULTS:Of the 69 colorectal tumors,HPV16 DNA was detected in 11(16%) by nested-PCR,and HPV16 DNA was present in 8 of the 11(73%) tumors which was confirmed by ISH.The presence of HPV16 DNA in colorectal tumors was not associated with patients' clinical parameters including age,gender,smoking status,tumor site;however,HPV16 infection was more common in stage Ⅰ patients than in late-stages patients(Ⅱ,Ⅲ and Ⅳ).We next asked whether HPV16 infection could be linked with colorectal cancer development.Immunohistochemical data indicated that 8 of the 11 HPV16 DNA-positive tumors had E6 oncoprotein expression.Moreover,we also observed that the adjacent normal tissues including endothelial cells,lymphocytes,fibroblasts,and gland cells in E6-positive tumors had E6 oncoprotein expression.In addition,3 of the 4(75%) E6-positive tumors carrying p53 wild-type had negative immunostaining,but one tumor had less p53 immunostaining.We further examined whether E6-positive and/or p53 mutated tumors reduce p53 transcriptional activity.Real-time RT-PCR analysis indicated that p21 and mdm2 mRNA expression levels in E6/p53-wildtype tumors were significantly lower than in their adjacent normal tissues;as expected,E6-positive/p53-mutated tumors had lower p21 and mdm2 mRNA expression levels compared with their adjacent normal tissues.These results clearly indicate that the E6 oncoprotein expressed in p53 wildtype tumors may reduce p21 and mdm2 expression via p53 inactivation.CONCLUSION:These results suggest that HPV16 infection may be involved in a subset of colorectal cancer,and we suggest that the transmission of HPV to the colon and rectum might occur through peripheral blood lymphocytes. | Tan-Hsia Chen Chi-Chou Huang Kun-Tu Yeh Shu-Hau Chang Shih-Wen Chang Wen-Wei Sung Ya-Wen Cheng Huei Lee | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,30: | 5 |
| 11 | Accurate machine learning models based on small dataset of energetic materials through spatial matrix featurization methods显示文摘A large database is desired for machine learning(ML) technology to make accurate predictions of materials physicochemical properties based on their molecular structure.When a large database is not available,the development of proper featurization method based on physicochemical nature of target proprieties can improve the predictive power of ML models with a smaller database.In this work,we show that two new featurization methods,volume occupation spatial matrix and heat contribution spatial matrix,can improve the accuracy in predicting energetic materials' crystal density(ρ_(crystal)) and solid phase enthalpy of formation(H_(f,solid)) using a database containing 451 energetic molecules.Their mean absolute errors are reduced from 0.048 g/cm~3 and 24.67 kcal/mol to 0.035 g/cm~3 and 9.66 kcal/mol,respectively.By leave-one-out-cross-validation,the newly developed ML models can be used to determine the performance of most kinds of energetic materials except cubanes.Our ML models are applied to predict ρ_(crystal) and H_(f,solid) of CHON-based molecules of the 150 million sized PubChem database,and screened out 56 candidates with competitive detonation performance and reasonable chemical structures.With further improvement in future,spatial matrices have the potential of becoming multifunctional ML simulation tools that could provide even better predictions in wider fields of materials science. | Chao Chen Danyang Liu Siyan Deng Lixiang Zhong Serene Hay Yee Chan Shuzhou Li Huey Hoon Hng | 2021 | Journal of Energy Chemistry2021,30,12: | 4 |
| 12 | Survival analysis and mortality predictors of hospitalized severe burn victims in a Malaysian burns intensive care unit显示文摘Background:Prognostic measures to determine burn mortality are essential in evaluating the severity of individual burn victims.This is an important process of triaging patients with high risk of mortality that may be nursed in the acute care setting.Malaysian burn research is lacking with only one publication identified which describes the epidemiology of burn victims.Therefore,the objective of this study was to go one step further and identify the predictors of burn mortality from a Malaysian burns intensive care unit(BICU)which may be used to triage patients at higher risk of death.Methods:This is a retrospective cohort study of all admissions to Hospital Sultan Ismail’s BICU from January 2010 till October 2015.Admission criteria were in accordance with the American Burn Association guidelines,and risk factors of interest were recorded.Data was analyzed using simple logistic regression to determine significant predictors of mortality.Survival analysis with time to death event was performed using the Kaplan-Meier survival curve with log-rank test.Results:Through the 6-year period,393 patients were admitted with a male preponderance of 73.8%.The mean age and length of stay were 35.6(±15.72)years and 15.3(±18.91)days.There were 48 mortalities with an overall mortality rate of 12.2%.Significant risk factors identified on simple logistic regression were total body surface area(TBSA)>20%(p<0.001),inhalation injury(p<0.001)and presence of early systemic inflammatory response syndrome(SIRS)(p<0.001).Survival analysis using Kaplan-Meier survival curve showed similar results with TBSA>20%,presence of SIRS,mechanical ventilation and inhalation injury which were associated with poorer survival(p<0.001).Conclusion:The predictors of mortality identified in a Malaysian BICU were TBSA>20%,early SIRS,mechanical ventilation and inhalation injury which were associated with poorer survival outcome.The immunological response differs from individual patients and influenced by the severity of burn injury.Early SIRS on admission is an important predictor of death and may represent the severity of burn injury.Patients who required mechanical ventilation were associated with mortality and it is likely related to the severity of pulmonary insults sustained by individual patients.This data is important for outcome prognostication and mortality risk counselling in severely burned patients. | Henry Tan Chor Lip Jih Huei Tan Mathew Thomas Farrah-Hani Imran Tuan Nur’Azmah Tuan Mat | 2019 | Burns & Trauma2019,7,1: | 4 |

| 16 | NGO开展VCT预防静脉吸毒人群HIV/AIDS效果的研究显示文摘目的研究非政府组织(NGO)开展自愿咨询检测(VCT)预防静脉吸毒人群艾滋病病毒/艾滋病(HIV/ AIDS)的效果。方法由妇女联合会承担VCT工作。疾病预防控制中心进行指导和培训,建立'家庭健康教育站',发动同伴招募社区静脉吸毒人员;提供检测前后咨询和快速检测服务;提供美沙酮替代治疗(MMT)和HIV/AIDS诊治转诊服务。结果建立了NGO开展VCT预防社区静脉吸毒人群HIV/AIDS的工作模式。吸毒人员HIV抗体阳性率为57.5%,他们的艾滋病传播及预防知识的知晓率从VCT前的49.3%~86.2%提高到VCT后的81.1%~99.1%;共用针头、棉花、药液的百分率从45.296~56.7%降到30.096-33.6%;用漂白粉清洗针头/注射器的百分事从零提高到17%;吸毒者发生性行为时从不使用安全套的百分比从约82%减少到32.5%~38.4%,小于一半时间至每次使用安全套的百分比从0~9.896提高到7.1%~24.4%。吸毒人员、HIV感染者获得了MMT和HIV/AIDS诊治转诊服务和心理支持。不歧视吸毒人员及HIV感染者的社区环境初步形成。结论由NGO开展VCT预防静脉吸毒人群艾滋病可行、有效。 | 梁绍伶 Huey T Chen 廖桂兰 王喜文 董柏青 | 2008 | 中国艾滋病性病2008,14,5: | 3 |
| 17 | Unsteady Shock-Flow Characteristics in an Over-Expanded Rocket Nozzle显示文摘A numerical investigation of transient side-loads in an axisymmetric over-expanded thrust optimized contour nozzle is presented.These nozzles experience side-loads during start-up and shut-down operations,because of the flow separation at nozzle walls.Two types of flow separations such as FSS and RSS shock structure occur.A two-dimension numerical simulation has been carried out over an axisymmetric TOC nozzle to validate present results and investigate oscillatory flow characteristics for start-up processes.Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme.Governing equations are solved by coupled implicit scheme.Reynolds Stress turbulence model is selected.Present computed pressure at the nozzle wall closely matched with experiment data.A hysteresis phenomenon has been observed between these two shock structures.The transition from FSS to RSS pattern during start-up process has shown maximum nozzle wall pressure.Nozzle wall pressure and shear stress values have shown fluctuations during the FSS to RSS transition. | 20 | 强制戒毒对减少吸毒人群艾滋病危险行为和感染效果调查显示文摘目的研究强制戒毒对减少吸毒人群HIV/AIDS危险行为和感染的效果,为吸毒人群艾滋病控制提供决策依据。方法在社区建立VCTI作站,通过书信和同伴通知招募社区静脉吸毒人员,进行面对面问卷调查,用快速检测方法检测HIV抗体。采用Epidata3.1建立数据库,用SAS9.1软件进行资料多元回归分析。结果共调查613名社区静脉吸毒人员,89.60%的吸毒人员接受过1次以上的强制戒毒治疗,74.10%能够正确回答7条以上艾滋病知识问题。38.50%-67.00%吸毒者共用注射器,棉花、清洁液和容器、共用药液吸毒。78.20%性交时从不使用安全套。HIV抗体阳性率为52.40%。吸毒人员接受强制戒毒次数越多,HIV/AIDS知识水平越高,而与安全套使用频率、共用针头、注射器没有关系。吸毒时间越长,接受强制戒毒次数越多,共用棉花、清洁液和容器、共用药液吸毒机率越大,HIV感染率越高。结论强制戒毒治疗可以提高吸毒人群预防艾滋病知识水平,但减少危险行为和感染效果不大,应提高戒毒所医务人员和干警行为干预知识水平和技能,为出所戒毒人员提供后续的社区干预转介服务。 | 梁绍伶 Huey T.Chen 廖桂兰 王喜文 | 2013 | 应用预防医学2013,19,5: | 2 |
