1Near-diffraction-limited linearly polarized narrow-linewidth random fiber laser with record kilowatt output显示文摘In this paper, we propose and experimentally investigate a linearly polarized narrow-linewidth random fiber laser(RFL) operating at 1080 nm and boost the output power to kilowatt level with near-diffraction-limited beam quality using a master oscillation power amplifier. The RFL based on a half-opened cavity, which is composed of a linearly polarized narrow-linewidth fiber Bragg grating and a 500 m piece of polarization-maintained Ge-doped fiber, generates a 0.71 W seed laser with an 88 pm full width at half-maximum(FWHM) linewidth and a 22.5 dB polarization extinction ratio(PER) for power scaling. A two-stage fiber amplifier enhances the seed laser to the maximal 1.01 k W with a PER value of 17 dB and a beam quality of M_x^2=1.15 and M_y^2=1.13. No stimulated Brillouin scattering effect is observed at the ultimate power level, and the FWHM linewidth of the amplified random laser broadens linearly as a function of the output power with a coefficient of about 0.1237 pm∕W.To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a linearly polarized narrow-linewidth RFL with even kilowatt-level near-diffraction-limited output, and further performance scaling is ongoing.JIANGMING XU LONG HUANG MAN JIANG JUN YE PENGFEI MA JINYONG LENG JIAN WU HANWEI ZHANG PU ZHOU 2017Photonics Research2017,5,4:20
2High power all-fiberized and narrow-bandwidth MOPA system by tandem pumping strategy for thermally induced mode instability suppression显示文摘An all-fiberized and narrow-bandwidth master oscillator power amplification(MOPA) system with record output power of 4 kW level and slope efficiency of 78% is demonstrated. Tandem pumping strategy is tentatively introduced into the narrow-bandwidth MOPA system for thermally induced mode instability(TMI) suppression. The stimulated Brillouin scattering(SBS) effect is balanced by simply using one-stage phase modulation technique. With different phase modulation signals, SBS limited output powers of 336 W, 1.2 kW and 3.94 kW are respectively achieved with spectral bandwidths accounting for 90% power of ~0.025, 0.17 and ~0.89 nm. Compared with our previous 976 nm pumping system, TMI threshold is overall boosted to be >5 times in which tandem pumping increases the TMI threshold of >3times. The beam quality(M~2 factor) of the output laser is well within 1.5 below the TMI threshold while it is ultimately saturated to be 1.86 with the influence of TMI at maximal output power. Except for SBS and TMI, stimulated Raman scattering(SRS) effect will be another challenge for further power scaling. In such a high power MOPA system, multidetrimental effects(SBS, SRS and TMI) will coexist and may be mutual-coupled, which could provide a well platform for further comprehensively investigating and optimizing the high power, narrow-bandwidth fiber amplifiers.Pengfei Ma Hu Xiao Daren Meng Wei Liu Rumao Tao Jinyong Leng Yanxing Ma Rongtao Su Pu Zhou Zejin Liu 2018High Power Laser Science and Engineering2018,6,4:9
3All-fiberized and narrow-linewidth 5 kW power-level fiber amplifier based on a bidirectional pumping configuration显示文摘In this paper,an all-fiberized and narrow-linewidth 5 kW power-level fiber amplifier is presented. The laser is achieved based on the master oscillator power amplification configuration,in which the phase-modulated single-frequency laser is applied as the seed laser and a bidirectional pumping configuration is applied in the power amplifier. The stimulated Brillouin scattering, stimulated Raman scattering, and transverse mode instability effects are all effectively suppressed in the experiment.Consequently, the output power is scaled up to 4.92 kW with a slope efficiency of as high as approximately 80%.The 3-dB spectral width is about 0.59 nm,and the beam quality is measured to be M^(2)~1.22 at maximum output power.Furthermore,we have also conducted a detailed spectral analysis on the spectral width of the signal laser, which reveals that the spectral wing broadening phenomenon could lead to the obvious decrease of the spectral purity at certain output power.Overall, this work could provide a reference for obtaining and optimizing high-power narrow-linewidth fiber lasers.Pengfei Ma Hu Xiao Wei Liu Hanwei Zhang Xiaolin Wang Jinyong Leng Pu Zhou 2021High Power Laser Science and Engineering2021,9,3:9
4Tandem pumping architecture enabled high power random fiberlaser with near-diffraction-limited beam quality显示文摘In this contribution, we present the tandem pumping avenue leveraged performance scaling of random fiber laser to record 3 kW level with inherent temporal stability and near-diffraction-limited beam quality. The high power system employs a four-stage master oscillator power amplifier chain. The master oscillator is a half-opened cavity structured random distributed feedback fiber laser centered at 1080 nm and pumped by incoherent amplified spontaneous emission source. Narrowband random laser seed is selected by employing a spectral filtering module with a maximum output power of 1.08 W, full width at half maximum linewidth of 0.47 nm and spectral optical-signal-to-noise ratio of about 42 dB. As to the main amplification stage, for given 104 W pre-amplified random laser seed and 3.61 kW pump laser, an ultimate output power of 3.03 kW can be obtained, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 81.05%. Nearly single-transverse-mode amplified random laser can be achieved even at full power level for inherent high thermal modal instability threshold enabled by tandem pumping and inducing bending loss for high-order transverse-mode. Further performance scaling of this high power random laser system, such as power boosting, operation wavelength tuning and linewidth alteration, is the next goal.XU JiangMing YE Jun ZHOU Pu LENG JinYong XIAO Hu ZHANG HangWei WU Jian CHEN JinBao 2019Science China(Technological Sciences)2019,62,1:8
5In-band pumping avenue based high power superfluorescent fiber source with record power and near-diffraction-limited beam quality显示文摘High power superfluorescent fiber sources(SFSs), which could find wide applications in many fields such as middle infrared laser generation, Raman fiber laser pumping and spectral beam combination, have experienced a flourishing time in recent years for its unique properties, such as short coherence length and high temporal stability. The challenge for performance scalability of powerful SFS mainly lies on the physical issues including parasitic laser oscillation and modal instability(MI). In this contribution, by employing in-band pumping avenue and high-order transverse-mode management, we explore a high power SFS with record power, near-diffraction-limited beam quality and spectral manipulation flexibility. An ultimate output power of 3.14 kW can be obtained with high temporal stability and a beam quality of M^2= 1.59 for the amplified light. Furthermore, the dynamics of spectral evolutions, including redshifting of central wavelength and unsymmetrical broadening in spectral wings, of the main amplifier with different seed linewidths are investigated contrastively. Benefiting from the unique high pump brightness and high MI threshold of in-band pumping scheme, the demonstrated system also manifests promising performance scaling potential.Jiangming Xu Jun Ye Hu Xiao Jinyong Leng Wei Liu Pu Zhou 2018High Power Laser Science and Engineering2018,6,3:5
6Passively spatiotemporal gain-modulation-induced stable pulsing operation of a random fiber laser显示文摘Unlike a traditional fiber laser with a defined resonant cavity, a random fiber laser(RFL), whose operation is based on distributed feedback and gain via Rayleigh scattering(RS) and stimulated Raman scattering in a long passive fiber, has fundamental scientific challenges in pulsing operation for its remarkable cavity-free feature. For the time being, stable pulsed RFL utilizing a passive method has not been reported. Here, we propose and experimentally realize the passive spatiotemporal gain-modulation-induced stable pulsing operation of counterpumped RFL. Thanks to the good temporal stability of an employed pumping amplified spontaneous emission source and the superiority of this pulse generation scheme, a stable and regular pulse train can be obtained.Furthermore, the pump hysteresis and bistability phenomena with the generation of high-order Stokes light is presented, and the dynamics of pulsing operation is discussed after the theoretical investigation of the counterpumped RFL. This work extends our comprehension of temporal property of RFL and paves an effective novel avenue for the exploration of pulsed RFL with structural simplicity, low cost, and stable output.JIANGMING XU JUN YE WEI LIU JIAN WU HANWEI ZHANG JINYONG LENG PU ZHOU 2017Photonics Research2017,5,6:4
7Vortex random fiber laser with controllable orbital angular momentum mode显示文摘In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a vortex random fiber laser(RFL) with a controllable orbital angular momentum(OAM) mode. The topological charge of the vortex RFL can range from-50 to 50 with nearly watt-level output power. A triangular toroidal interferometer is constructed to verify the spiral phase structure of the generated vortex random laser with a special coherence property. Vortex RFLs with fractional topological charge are also performed in this work. As the first demonstration of a vortex RFL with a controllable OAM mode(to the best of our knowledge), this work may not only offer a valuable reference on temporal modulation of a vortex beam and optical field control of an RFL but also provide a potential vortex laser source for applications in imaging, sensing, and communication.XIAOYA MA JUN YE YANG ZHANG JIANGMING XU JIAN WU TIANFU YAO JINYONG LENG PU ZHOU 2021Photonics Research2021,9,2:4
8Pump scheme optimization of an incoherently pumped high-power random fiber laser显示文摘Optical signal-to-noise ratio(OSNR) is one of the most significant parameters for the performance characterization of random fiber lasers(RFLs) and their application potentiality in sensing and telecommunication. An effective way to improve the OSNR of RFLs is pump scheme optimization, for example, employing a temporally stable source as the pump. In this paper, the output performance of an incoherently pumped RFL dependence on the pump bandwidth has been investigated both in experiment and theory. It is found that a high-OSNR RFL can be achieved with broadband amplified spontaneous emission(ASE) source pumping, and a relatively broad pump bandwidth can also help suppress the spectral broadening while maintaining an ultra-high spectral purity.By optimizing the pump bandwidth to ~10 nm, maximum OSNR of ~39 dB(corresponding to a spectral purity of ~99.96%) with more than 99 W output power can be obtained. Moreover, for the pump bandwidth of 0.6–40 nm, the spectral purity can reach as high as >99% with the pump power ranging from ~85 to ~117 W.In addition, with the aid of theoretical simulation based on a modified power balance model, we find that the increment of pump bandwidth can decrease the effective Raman gain coefficient, further influencing the gain characteristics, nonlinear effects, and eventually the output performance. This work provides new insight into the influence of the pump characteristics on the output performance of incoherently pumped RFLs.JUN YE JIANGMING XU JIAXIN SONG ANG ZHANG HANWEI ZHANG HU XIAO JINYONG LENG PU ZHOU 2019Photonics Research2019,7,9:4
9Optical rogue wave in random fiber laser显示文摘The famous demonstration of optical rogue waves(RWs),a powerful tool to reveal the fundamental physics in different laser scenarios, opened a flourishing time for temporal statistics.Random fiber laser(RFL)has likewise attracted wide attention due to its great potential in multidisciplinary demonstrations and promising applications. However, owing to the distinctive cavity-free structure,it is a scientific challenge to achieve temporal localized RWs in RFLs,whose feedback arises from multiple scattering in disordered medium. Here,we report the exploration of RW in the highly skewed, transient intensity of an incoherently pumped RFL for the first time,to our knowledge, and unfold the involved kinetics successfully. The corresponding frequency domain measurements demonstrate that the RW event arises from a crucial sustained stimulated Brillouin scattering process with intrinsic stochastic nature. This investigation highlights a novel path to fully understanding the complex physics, such as photon propagation and localization,in disordered media.JIANGMING XU JIAN WU JUN YE JIAXIN SONG BAICHENG YAO HANWEI ZHANG JINYONG LENG WEILI ZHANG PU ZHOU YUNJIANG RAO 2020Photonics Research2020,8,1:4
10Transverse mode instability mitigation in a high-power confined-doped fiber amplifier with good beam quality through seed laser control显示文摘In this work,a confined-doped fiber with the core/inner-cladding diameter of 40/250μm and a relative doping ratio of 0.75 is fabricated through a modified chemical vapor deposition method combined with the chelate gas deposition technique, and subsequently applied in a tandem-pumped fiber amplifier for high-power operation and transverse mode instability(TMI)mitigation.Notably, the impacts of the seed laser power and mode purity are preliminarily investigated through comparative experiments. It is found that the TMI threshold could be significantly affected by the seed laser mode purity. The possible mechanism behind this phenomenon is proposed and revealed through comprehensive comparative experiments and theoretical analysis. Finally,a maximum output power of 7.49 kW is obtained with the beam quality factor of approximately 1.83,which is the highest output power ever reported in a forward tandem-pumped confined-doped fiber amplifier. This work could provide a good reference and practical solution to improve the TMI threshold and realize high-power high-brightness fiber lasers.Hanshuo Wu Haobo Li Yi An Ruixian Li Xiao Chen Hu Xiao Liangjin Huang Huan Yang Zhiping Yan Jinyong Leng Zhiyong Pan Pu Zhou 2022High Power Laser Science and Engineering2022,10,6:3
11Greater than 2 kW all-passive fiber Raman amplifier with good beam quality显示文摘We report a 2 kW all-fiberized Raman fiber amplifier with efficient brightness enhancement based on the graded-index fiber. The maximum power output reaches up to 2.034 kW centered at 1130 nm,with a conversion efficiency of 79.35%with respect to the injected pump power. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest conversion efficiency obtained for any Raman laser system using graded-index fiber. An optimized fiber combiner adopting graded-index fiber as the pigtail fiber was fabricated, enabling the preservation of the seeding brightness in the core-pumped Raman fiber amplifier, and further enhancing the ultimate brightness of the output laser after amplification. At the maximum power output, the beam quality parameter M2 is 2.8,corresponding to a signal-to-pump brightness enhancement factor of 11.2.As far as we know,we obtain the highest brightness enhancement among Raman fiber lasers of over 100 W,and the best beam quality for graded-index Raman fiber lasers of over 150 W.Yizhu Chen Tianfu Yao Hu Xiao Jinyong Leng Pu Zhou 2020High Power Laser Science and Engineering2020,8,4:2
12Power scaling on tellurite glass Raman fibre lasers for mid-infrared applications显示文摘The power scaling on mid-infrared Raman fibre lasers(RFLs) is in demand for applications in health, environment and security. In this paper, we present the simulated laser behaviours of the tellurite glass RFLs pumped by 300-W Tm-doped fibre lasers(TDFLs) at 2 μm for the first time. By combining the advantages of the TDFLs and tellurite fibre, the output power at 2.35 μm has reached over hundreds of watts by first-order Raman shift. Moreover, the cascaded RFLs have been demonstrated with a wavelength extension greater than 3 μm and output power of tens of watts. To maximize the output power and the slope efficiency of the RFLs, we further analyse the interaction between the Raman gain and cavity loss, which are determined by fibre length and output reflectance of the laser cavity.Tianfu Yao Liangjin Huang Pu Zhou Bing Lei Jinyong Leng Jinbao Chen 2018High Power Laser Science and Engineering2018,6,2:2
13Revealing the dynamics of intensity fluctuation transfer in a random Raman fiber laser显示文摘Temporal intensity fluctuation is one of the inherent features of fiber lasers. When utilizing the fiber lasers to pump a random Raman fiber laser(RRFL),the intensity fluctuation transfer from the pump to the random lasing could affect the output performance significantly. In this paper,we comprehensively compared the spectral, temporal, and power characteristics of an RRFL pumped by two different fiber lasers—a temporally unstable fiber oscillator and a temporally stable amplified spontaneous emission(ASE)source.Owing to less impact of the intensity fluctuation transfer, the ASE source-pumped RRFL shows∼45.3%higher maximum output power, higher spectral purity(>99.9%)and optical signal-to-noise ratio(>40dB),weaker spectral broadening, and more stable temporal behavior compared to the fiber oscillator-pumped RRFL.Furthermore, based on the temporal-spatial-coupled Raman equations and the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations,we numerically revealed the impact of the pump intensity fluctuations on the output characteristics of RRFLs,and found that the temporal walk-off effect played an important role in the dynamics of intensity fluctuation transfer. This work may provide a reference for designing and implementing high-performance RRFLs and promote their practicability in sensing, telecommunications, and high-power applications.Jun Ye Xiaoya Ma Yang Zhang Jiangming Xu Hanwei Zhang Tianfu Yao Jinyong Leng Pu Zhou 2022Photonics Research2022,10,3:1
142-kW-level superfluorescent fiber source with flexible wavelength and linewidth tunable characteristics显示文摘The superfluorescent fiber source(SFS)with tunable optical spectrum has shown great application potential in the sensing, imaging, and spectral combination. Here,we demonstrate for the first time a 2-kW-level wavelength and linewidth tunable SFS.Based on a flexible filtered SFS seed and three stages of fiber amplifiers, the output power can be scaled from the milliwatt level to about 2 kW,with a wavelength tuning range of 1068–1092 nm and a linewidth tuning range of 2.5–9.7 nm.Moreover,a numerical simulation is conducted based on the generalized nonlinear Schr?dinger equation, and the results reveal that the wavelength tuning range is limited by the decrease of seed power and the growth of amplified spontaneous emission, whereas the linewidth tuning range is determined by the gain competition and nonlinear Kerr effects. The developed wavelength and linewidth tunable SFS may be applied to scientific research and industrial processing.Jun Ye Chenchen Fan Jiangming Xu Hu Xiao Jinyong Leng Pu Zhou 2021High Power Laser Science and Engineering2021,9,4:1

17Cladding-pumped Raman fiber laser with 0.78%quantum defect enabled by phosphorus-doped fiber显示文摘The quantum defect(QD)is an important issue that demands prompt attention in high-power fiber lasers.A large QD may aggravate the thermal load in the laser, which would impact the frequency, amplitude noise and mode stability, and threaten the security of the high-power laser system. Here,we propose and demonstrate a cladding-pumped Raman fiber laser(RFL)with QD of less than 1%.Using the Raman gain of the boson peak in a phosphorus-doped fiber to enable the cladding pump, the QD is reduced to as low as 0.78%with a 23.7 W output power. To our knowledge, this is the lowest QD ever reported in a cladding-pumped RFL.Furthermore, the output power can be scaled to 47.7 W with a QD of 1.29%.This work not only offers a preliminary platform for the realization of high-power low-QD fiber lasers, but also proves the great potential of low-QD fiber lasers in power scaling.Xiaoya Ma Jiangming Xu Jun Ye Yang Zhang Liangjin Huang Tianfu Yao Jinyong Leng Zhiyong Pan Pu Zhou 2022High Power Laser Science and Engineering2022,10,2:1
18Toward high-power nonlinear fiber amplifier显示文摘Stimulated Raman scattering(SRS) effect is considered to be one of the main obstacles for power scaling in general-type fiber lasers. Different from previous techniques that aim at suppressing SRS, nonlinear fiber amplifier(NFA), which manipulates and employs the SRS for power scaling in rare-earth-doped fiber, is under intensive research in recent years. In this paper, the authors will present an all-round study on this new kind of high-power fiber amplifier. A theoretical model is proposed based on the rate equation and amplified spontaneous emission(ASE), with random noise taken into account. By numerical solving of the theoretical model, the power scaling potential, heat analysis and advantages in suppressing the undesired backscattering light are quantificationally analyzed for the first time. Then two different types of high-power NFAs are demonstrated individually. Firstly, a laser diode pumped NFA has reached kilowatt output power, and the results agree well with theoretical predictions. Secondly, a tandem-pumped NFA is proposed for the first time and validated experimentally, in which 1.5 kW output power has been achieved. The authors also briefly discuss several new issues relating to the complex nonlinear dynamics that occur in high-power NFAs, which might be interesting topics for future endeavors.Hanwei Zhang Pu Zhou Hu Xiao Jinyong Leng Rumao Tao Xiaolin Wang Jiangming Xu Xiaojun Xu Zejin Liu 2018High Power Laser Science and Engineering2018,6,3:1
19Numerical modeling of the thermally induced core laser leakage in high power co-pumped ytterbium doped fiber amplifier显示文摘We propose a novel model to explain the physical process of the thermally induced core laser leakage(TICLL) effect in a high power co-pumped ytterbium doped fiber(YDF) amplifier. This model considers the thermally induced mode bending loss decrease and the thermally induced mode instability(TMI) in the coiled YDF, and is further used to reproduce the TICLL effect in the high power co-pumped step-index 20/400 fiber amplifier. Besides, the TICLL effect in the copumping scheme and counter-pumping scheme is compared. The result proves that the TICLL effect is caused by the combined effect of the thermally induced mode bending loss decrease and the TMI, and could be mitigated by adopting the counter-pumping scheme. To our best knowledge, this is the first theoretical explanation of the TICLL effect in high power fiber amplifier.Lingchao Kong Jinyong Leng Pu Zhou Zongfu Jiang 2018High Power Laser Science and Engineering2018,6,2:1
20Monolithic tapered Yb‑doped fber chirped pulse amplifer delivering 126μJ and 207 MW femtosecond laser with near difraction‑limited beam quality显示文摘In this work,a high-energy and high peak power chirped pulse amplifcation system with near difraction-limited beam quality based on tapered confned-doped fber(TCF)is experimentally demonstrated. The TCF has a core numerical aperture of 0.07 with core/cladding diameter of 35/250µm at the thin end and 56/400μm at the thick end. With a backward-pumping confguration,a maximum single pulse energy of 177.9μJ at a repetition rate of 504 kHz is realized, corresponding to an average power of 89.7 W.Through partially compensating for the accumulated nonlinear phase during the amplifcation process via adjusting the high order dispersion of the stretching chirped fber Bragg grating, the duration of the amplifed pulse is compressed to 401 fs with a pulse energy of 126.3μJ and a peak power of 207 MW,which to the best of our knowledge represents the highest peak power ever reported from a monolithic ultrafast fber laser. At the highest energy, the polarization extinction ratio and the M2 factor were respectively measured to be~19 dB and 1.20.In addition, the corresponding intensity noise properties as well as the short-and long-term stability were also examined, verifying a stable operation of the system. It is believed that the demonstrated laser source could fnd important applications in,for example, advanced manufacturing and photomedicine.Tao Wang Bo Ren Can Li Kun Guo Jinyong Leng Pu Zhou 2023Frontiers of Optoelectronics2023,16,3:0
