| 1 | Plasmonics for solid-state lighting: enhanced excitation and directional emission of highly efficient light sources显示文摘Light sources based on reliable and energy-efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are instrumental in the development of solid-statelighting (SSL). Most research efforts in SSL have focused on improving both the intrinsic quantum efficiency (QE) and the stability oflight emitters. For this reason, it is broadly accepted that with the advent of highly efficient (QE close to 1) and stable emitters, thefundamental research phase of SSL is coming to an end. In this study, we demonstrate a very large improvement in SSL emission (above70-fold directional enhancement for p-polarized emission and 60-fold enhancement for unpolarized emission) using nanophotonicstructures. This is attained by coupling emitters with very high QE to collective plasmonic resonances in periodic arrays of aluminumnanoantennas. | 2 | Acute compartment syndrome of the thigh following hip replacement by anterior approach in a patient using oral anticoagulants显示文摘Acute compartment syndrome(ACS) of the thigh following primary total hip arthroplasty(THA) is a highly uncommon complication and has not yet been reported before with regards to the anterior approach through the anterior supine interval. We present a case of a 69-year-old male patient with a history of stroke, who developed ACS of the thigh after elective THA while using therapeutic low molecular weight heparin as bridging for regular oral anticoagulation. ACS pathogenesis, diagnostic tools, treatment and relevant literature are discussed. The patient's ACS was recognized in time and treated by operative decompression with fasciotomy of the anterior compartment. | 4 | Chronic antiepileptic drug use and functional network efficiency: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study显示文摘AIM To increase our insight in the neuronal mechanisms underlying cognitive side-effects of antiepileptic drug(AED) treatment.METHODS The relation between functional magnetic resonance-acquired brain network measures, AED use, and cognitive function was investigated. Three groups of patients with epilepsy with a different risk profile for developing cognitive side effects were included: A 'low risk' category(lamotrigine or levetiracetam, n=16), an 'intermediate risk' category(carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, phenytoin, or valproate, n=34) and a 'high risk' category(topiramate, n=5). Brain connectivity was assessed using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging and graph theoretical network analysis. The Computerized Visual Searching Task was used to measure central information processing speed, a common cognitive side effect of AED treatment. RESULTS Central information processing speed was lower in patients taking AEDs from the intermediate and high risk categories, compared with patients from the low risk category. The effect of risk category on global efficiency was significant(P < 0.05, ANCOVA), with a significantly higher global efficiency for patient from the low category compared with the high risk category(P < 0.05, post-hoc test). Risk category had no significant effect on the clustering coefficient(ANCOVA, P > 0.2). Also no significant associations between information processing speed and global efficiency or the clustering coefficient(linear regression analysis, P > 0.15) were observed. | 5 | Oral polymorphonuclear neutrophil characteristics in relation to oral health: a cross-sectional, observational clinical study显示文摘Polymorphonuclear neutrophils(PMNs) have a major role in the innate immune system. However, little is known about PMN contribution in relation to oral health. The objective of this study was to investigate the numbers and functional characteristics of oral PMNs(o PMNs) compared with circulatory PMNs(c PMNs). Oral rinse and venous blood samples were obtained from 268 systemically and orally healthy volunteers in a cross-sectional observational study. PMN counts, cell cycle analysis and cellular activation state were investigated. Also, reactive oxygen species(ROS) production was analyzed, with and without bacterial stimulation(Fusobacterium nucleatum). In males, 1.2 × 10~6± 1.0 × 10~6 oPMNs were collected, and showed a tendency to correlate with the levels of gingival bleeding(r = 0.215, P = 0.008). Comparable o PMNs counts were found among females(1.0 × 10~6± 0.7 × 10~6). More late-stage apoptotic/necrotic cells were found among the o PMNs(53.1%) compared with the c PMNs(8.5%; Po0.001). Without additional stimulation, o PMNs were more activated than c PMNs, as indicated by higher expression of CD11 b, CD63 and CD66 b, and higher constitutive ROS levels(Po0.001). Notably, in response to bacterial stimulation, o PMNs released comparable ROS levels as c PMNs(P = 0.042). In conclusion, this study provides data on viable o PMNs showing high levels of activation in orally and systemically healthy individuals, free of apparent caries lesions and periodontal disease.
