2Osteopontin as potential biomarker and therapeutic target in gastric and liver cancers显示文摘Gastric cancer and liver cancer are among the most common malignancies and the leading causes of death worldwide,due to late detection and high recurrence rates.Today,these cancers have a heavy socioeconomic burden,for which a full understanding of their pathophysiological features is warranted to search for promising biomarkers and therapeutic targets.Osteopontin (OPN) is overexpressed in most patients with gastric and liver cancers.Over the past decade,emerging evidence has revealed a correlation of OPN level and clinicopathological features and prognosis in gastric and liver cancers,indicating its potential as an independent prognostic indicator in such patients.Functional studies have verified the potential of OPN knockdown as a therapeutic approach in vitro and in vivo .Furthermore,OPN mediates multifaceted roles in the interaction between cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment,in which many details need further exploration.OPN signaling results in various functions,including prevention of apoptosis,modulation of angiogenesis,malfunction of tumor-associated macrophages,degradation of extracellular matrix,activation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase-Akt and nuclear factor-κB pathways,which lead to tumor formation and progression,particularly in gastric and liver cancers.This editorial aims to review recent findings on alteration in OPN expression and its clinicopathological associations with tumor progression,its potential as a therapeutic target,and putative mechanisms in gastric and liver cancers.Better understanding of the implications of OPN in tumorigenesis might facilitate development of therapeutic regimens to benefit patients with these deadly malignancies.Dong-Xing Cao Zhi-Jie Li Xiao-Ou Jiang Yick Liang Lum Ester Khin Nikki P Lee Guo-Hao Wu John M Luk 2012World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,30:29

13Influence of Fe Addition on Products of Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis Reaction in 3Ti-Si-2C System显示文摘Influence of Fe addition on products of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) reaction in 3Ti-Si-2C system was investigated in the present study. Without Fe addition, Ti5Si3 and TiC are the dominant phases along with a small amount of Ti3SiC2 phase and unreacted C left in the final products. As Fe content ranges from 10% to 30%, the products consist of TiC, Ti5Si3, Fe2Ti and unreacted C, but no trace of Ti3SiC2 phase is detected. Furthermore, the amounts of both Fe2Ti and C phases increase with Fe content increasing. Addition of Fe has a great effect on the reaction route and significantly restrains the formation of Ti3SiC2 during the combustion synthesis process, and therefore, the SHS is not an effective fabrication technique to synthesize the ternary Ti3SiC2 ceramic in either 3Ti-Si-2C or Fe-3Ti-Si-2C system. Besides, without Fe addition, Ti5Si3 presents as the coarse irregular appearance with an obviously sintered morphology. In contrast, the shape of Ti5Si3 exhibits more and more spherical (cobblestone-like) and the surface becomes increasingly smooth, because the amount of liquids formed during the SHS reaction increases with the increase of Fe content. 14Validation and Scenario Analysis of a Soil Organic Carbon Model显示文摘A model developed by the authors was validated against independent data sets. The data sets were obtained from field experiments of crop residue decomposition and a 7-year soil improvement in Yixing City, Jiangsu Province. Model validation indicated that soil organic carbon dynamics can be simulated from the weather variables of temperature, sunlight and precipitation, soil clay content and bulk density, grain yield of previous crops, qualities and quantities of the added organic matter. Model simulation in general agreed with the measurements. The comparison between computed and measured resulted in correlation coefficient γ2 values of 0.9291 * * * (n = 48) and 0. 6431 * * (n = 65) for the two experiments, respectively. Model prediction under three scenarios of no additional organic matter input, with an annual incorporation of rice and wheat straw at rates of 6.75t/ha and 9.0t/ha suggested that the soil organic carbon in Wanshi Township of Yixing City would be from an initial value of 7.85g/kg in 1983 to 6.30g/kg, 11.42g/kg and 13g/kg in 2014, respectively. 15Procedural complexity independent of P2Y12 reaction unit(PRU)values is associated with acute in situ thrombosis in Pipeline flow diversion of cerebral aneurysms显示文摘background Acute in situ thrombosis is an ischaemic phenomenon during Pipeline embolisation device(PED)procedures with potentially high morbidity and mortality.There is controversy regarding the role of platelet function testing with P2Y12 assay as a predictor of intraprocedural thromboembolic events.There is limited knowledge on whether procedural complexity influences these events.Methods Data were collected retrospectively on 742 consecutive PED cases at a single institution.Patients with intraprocedural acute thrombosis were compared with patients without these events.results A cohort of 37 PED cases with acute in situ thrombosis(mean age 53.8 years,mean aneurysm size 8.4 mm)was matched with a cohort of 705 PED cases without intraprocedural thromboembolic events(mean age 56.4 years,mean aneurysm size 6.9 mm).All patients with in situ thrombosis received intra-arterial and/or intravenous abciximab.The two groups were evenly matched in patient demographics,previous treatment/subarachnoid hemorrhage(SAH)and aneurysm location.There was no statistical difference in postprocedural P2Y12 reaction unit(PRU)values between the two groups,with a mean of 156 in the in situ thrombosis group vs 148 in the control group(p=0.5894).Presence of cervical carotid tortuosity,high cavernous internal carotid artery grade,need for multiple PED and vasospasm were not significantly different between the two groups.The in situ thrombosis group had statistically significant longer fluoroscopy time(60.4 vs 38.4 min,p<0.0001),higher radiation exposure(3476 vs 2160 mGy,p<0.0001),higher rates of adjunctive coiling(24.3% vs 8.37%,p=0.0010)and higher utilisation of balloon angioplasty(37.8% vs 12.2%,p<0.0001).Clinically,the in situ thrombosis cohort had higher incidence of major and minor stroke,intracerebral haemorrhage and length of stay.Conclusions Predictors of procedural complexity(higher radiation exposure,longer fluoroscopy time,adjunctive coiling and need for balloon angioplasty)are associated with acute thrombotic events during PED placement,independent of PRU values.Bowen Jiang Matthew T Bender Erick M Westbroek Jessica K Campos Li-Mei Lin Risheng Xu Rafael J Tamargo Judy Huang Geoffrey P Colby Alexander L Coon 2018Stroke & Vascular Neurology2018,3,3:2
16Quality control measures for lowering the seroconversion rate of hemodialysis patients with hepatitis B or C virus显示文摘BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis (HD) patients are at high risk of infection by hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV). The present study was designed to determine the impact of quality control measures on the prevention of transmission of blood-borne viruses. METHODS: A total of 6182 adult maintenance HD patients from all HD units in Zhejiang Province were recruited on January 1, 2007. The baseline demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded and all patients were followed up until death or survival at 4 years later. The Quality Control Standards of Hemodialysis were gradually implemented in HD units. The HBV or HCV seroconversion rates of the recruited patients were calculated and compared every year during the observation period. RESULTS: The prevalence of HBV was 8.3% at the beginning of the study, and 6.6% for HCV. With the implementation of the HD quality control measures, the HBV seroconversion rate tended to decrease year by year (χ 2 =6.620, P=0.085), and the HCV seroconversion rate decreased significantly (χ 2 =10.41, P=0.015). Compared with the data in 2007, the HBV seroconversion rate (χ 2 =4.204, P=0.040, relative risk ratio 0.393, 95% CI 0.156-0.991) and the HCV seroconversion rate (χ 2 =7.373, P=0.007, relative risk ratio 0.386, 95% CI 0.189-0.787) decreased significantly in 2010. 17Direct observation of localized surface plasmon field enhancement by Kelvin probe force microscopy显示文摘A surface plasmon(SP)is a fundamental excitation state that exists in metal nanostructures.Over the past several years,the performance of optoelectronic devices has been improved greatly via the SP enhancement effect.In our previous work,the responsivity of GaN ultraviolet detectors was increased by over 30 times when using Ag nanoparticles.However,the physics of the SP enhancement effect has not been established definitely because of the lack of experimental evidence.To reveal the physical origin of this enhancement,Kelvin probe force microscopy(KPFM)was used to observe the SP-induced surface potential reduction in the vicinity of Ag nanoparticles on a GaN epilayer.Under ultraviolet illumination,the localized field enhancement induced by the SP forces the photogenerated electrons to drift close to the Ag nanoparticles,leading to a reduction of the surface potential around the Ag nanoparticles on the GaN epilayer.For an isolated Ag nanoparticle with a diameter of~200 nm,the distribution of the SP localized field is located within 60 nm of the boundary of the Ag nanoparticle.For a dimer of Ag nanoparticles,the localized field enhancement between the nanoparticles was the strongest.The results presented here provide direct experimental proof of the localized field enhancement.These results not only explain the high performance of GaN detectors observed with the use of Ag nanoparticles but also reveal the physical mechanism of SP enhancement in optoelectronic devices,which will help us further understand and improve the performance of SP-based optoelectronic devices in the future.Da-Bing Li Xiao-Juan Sun Yu-Ping Jia Mark I Stockman Hari P Paudel Hang Song Hong Jiang Zhi-Ming Li 2017Light(Science & Applications)2017,6,1:2
18Subspecies in Przewalski's gazelle Procapra przewalskii and its conservation implication显示文摘Przewalski’s gazelle Procapra przewalskii is an endangered species endemic to China. A question remains about subspecific variation in this species. Skulls of Przewalski’s gazelle collected from its current remnant ranges around the Qinghai Lake in combination with those collected prior to the 20th century were measured and analyzed using Hierarchical Cluster Analysis in order to clarify the question. Unexpectedly, P. p. diversicornis, extirpated from its historic range, has spread to the Qinghai Lake region where it has replaced nominotypical P. p. przewalskii and is now restricted to a few small isolated populations around the lake. We discuss the causes of this unexpected replacement. In this study, we discuss the possibility of a new form, possibly a new subspecies, in the Guide Basin, adjacent to Qinghai Lake; it is unclear whether the new form has long existed and was only discovered in recent years, or whether it evolved in recent times due to the geographical isolation and anthropogenic landscape features. 20Locally transplanted enteric glia improve functional and structural recovery in a rat model of spinal cord injury显示文摘<正>BACKGROUND:We have previously reported that adult enteric glia(EG) facilitate the growth of transected dorsal root axons into the uninjured spinal cord to form functional connections with their targets. OBJECTIVE:The present study investigated the effects of EG on spinal cord function,tissue injury, and axonal regeneration following transplantation into injured rat spinal cords,according to histological and functional outcomes. DESIGN,TIME AND SETTING:A randomized controlled animal experiment was performed at McMaster University,Canada from January 2006 to March 2008. MATERIALS:EG were isolated from rat intestine. METHODS:One week following spinal cord crush,female Wistar rats were injected with an EG suspension(2μL,1×10~5/μL,n=10) or with the same volume of fresh culture medium alone(control animals,n=11).The third group did not receive any injection following laminectomy and served as the sham-operated controls(n=5). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Behavior was tested prior to transplantation and weekly following transplantation,with nine behavioral examinations in total.Open field,hind limb placement response, foot orientation response,and inclined plane test were utilized.Immediately following the final behavioral examination,spinal cord T_9 to L_1 segments were harvested for immunohistochemical and hematoxylin-eosin staining to determine astroglial scarring,axonal regeneration and spinal cord lesion size. RESULTS:Rats with EG transplantation exhibited significantly better locomotor function with reduced tissue damage,compared with the control rats.Cystic cavities were present 2 months after injury in spinal cords from both control groups.In contrast,rats injected with EG did not present with cystic lesions.In addition,the injury site consisted of cellular material and nerve fibers,and axonal regeneration was apparent,with dense labeling of neurofilament-positive axons within the injury site. Moreover,regenerating axons were intimately associated with transplanted EG CONCLUSION:These data indicated that EG enhanced functional improvement,which was associated with reduced tissue damage and axonal regeneration following transplantation into injured spinal cords.Shucui Jiang Mohammad I.
